2. 1 st Cover Album Analysis- The Clash London
calling
Title: The colour of the title stands out from
Genre/Images: The genre of the
Identity of character: As we
can see in the album cover
the identity of the artist is
hidden which shows that
they are not bothered about
showing of there identity but
are more interested in there
music. This support5s the
fact that it is Rock as they
seem to care less about how
they are portrayed in society,
However as in Pop they like
to sell there “star image”.
Messages about social group:
The message about social
groups is “live for the moment”
see at the back it is a snap shot
of a moment, so it emphasis to
teenagers to live life as it goes
on.
the rest of the album cover which could
emphasise that they want to be different to
people within society so it fulfils there
value and belief of going against
mainstream.
music looking at the album cover
looks like rock/ punk because of
the “dark” background. We also
see a man “position looks like his
about to smash guitar”, This
shows that it could be rock/punk
because they are seen to be
quite “hard core”.
Type of music:
The type of music would be quite
hard core as rock normally is quite
intense. This goes along with there
values and beliefs as they want to
go against mainstream so the
music being hard core goes
against being “normal”.
Values and Beliefs:
Contradict what mainstream
audience would like.
“be unique and different and be
about your music and not your
“star image”.
Uses and gratifications:
People may be able to identify with
this picture and the values being
displayed from this picture.
3. 2 nd Cover Album analysis- Grace Jones/
Slave to the Rhythm
Portrayal of artist: the artist is seen
as quite strong and aggressive as in
the cover album we can see “glass
breaking which shows that the
women is angry about something and
also the title “slave to the rhythm” is
to do with slavery so she could be
trying to get her message across
about something racial. Also having
her face and teeth are far apart which
comes across quite scary whi9ch
shows against he is angry about
something.
After watching the music video and
hearing one of the lyrics “pull the
limacine into me” goes against
“normal” expectations of women in
society so supports her value to
stand up for what she believe is right.
Genre: the genre of the music is
probably “soul” which is supported
by the picture as you can tell she is
trying to get a message across.
Vale and beliefs:
By looking at the picture we can see
some of the values and beliefs are
to stand up for what you believe is
right and also everyone should be
treated equally.
Uses and gratification: this could be used
to show people to stand up for there rights
and could influence people to live life as
they enjoy and not care about what others
think of them. Again we see this in the
picture as the picture of the female is
“exaggerated” which shows she is trying to
show its okay to be different from
everyone else and give everyone the
comfort to stand out and be different.
The picture even though she is not
passing her message across
because of the glass breaking and
her mouth really wide open shows
that she is screaming.
Message about social group: the
message being sent about the
social group is that get your
message across and make sure you
stand up for what you believe is
right.
4. 3 rd Album Cover AnalysisThe title of the music is in gold
which emphasises “50 Cents”
wealth and how he is portrayed
within society as quite rich and
powerful/strong,
Values and beliefs:
This picture shows that he cares
about his power and wealth and
how he is portrayed within
society and that he is music is
soled through his wealth as well
as his identity.
Uses and gratification :
The audience get entertainment by
looking at “50 Cent” music videos as he
often shows wealth and power in his
videos e.g. him having power over a girl
etc.
Genre: as looking at the album cover
you can see that the genre of the
music is hip pop as the artist is
showing of his body and one of hip
pop artist show of there body image
as well as there wealth. In this cover
album we can also see that “50 Cent”
is wearing a “Gucci” scarf which is
really expensive so he is showing of
his wealth.
Portrayal of artist: The artist is seen
quite strong and muscular and in
the picture we an see the “glass
crack” which shows that his
“indestructible” and strong. We can
also see that one of his arms are
highly sexualised as we can see
however the other part of the body
is covered up with the crack which
shows they want the audience to
pay attention and show that his
“strong”. This again fulfils hip pop
values and beliefs as they sell
there music through there identity.
