To create this work of art Picasso chose to use oil as his medium of choice. What is so fascinating
about the painting is his application of the medium. Picasso uses the brush and or palette knife to
create a cross hatch effect throughout the painting. Picasso chose to use neutral tones to describe the
mood of the painting. The figure of Manuel Pallares is shown in a three–quarters view within the
composition. The deliberate positioning of the figure leads the viewer to believe that Manuel was
not someone of importance. His wardrobe also lets the viewer know that he is an average person.
Picasso's treatment of the details is very representational of the Cubist style. Sharp lines and a vast
array of contrasting shapes and colors emphasize the creases of the suit jacket. This same attention
to detail is present in the mustache and the background as well.

artist. Some of the artist I recognized and even more that I didn't. One artwork that I found very

In 1900 (20 years old) he went to "Montmartre, Paris and bought his first studio with his friend (also
an artist) Carlos Casagemas. They met in barcelona. Picasso then started to use oil painting which is

Encouraged by his father, Picasso showed his artistic ability from a young age, with his first words
supposedly being 'piz, piz' in an attempt to say the Spanish word for 'pencil', 'lápiz'. From there, his
father taught him how to paint and draw until Picasso surpassed his father at the age of thirteen.
Furthermore, Picasso went through many different periods in his art, such as his "Blue Period" from
1901 to 1904. During this time, Picasso was facing loneliness and depression when trying to deal
with his close friend's death. His paintings from this time were made with blues and greens, and
depicted poverty, anguish, and isolation. After finally overcoming his grief, the "Blue Period" was
replaced by the "Rose Period", the sorrowful colors replaced by warmer colors like red, beige, and

from 1904 to1906. From his "Rose Period" Picasso went into Cubism, an artistic style created with
another artist and friend, Georges Braque. Cubism is an abstract style that dismantles objects before
piecing them back together to show off their geometric shapes; it gives the painting many points of
view at once. This startling new style began in 1907 and lasted until at least 1918, when his
Classical Period began. World War I drew Picasso to be solemn once more, coercing him to draw the
reality around him, up to 1927.

I like this artwork because it is simple, and it is not abstract. I like abstract artwork, but with a few
of his artworks he took it so far that it was slightly difficult to understand what I was looking at.
This artwork also appeals to me because of the colors he used, even though they are not natural
colors that would be seen in a room, they look as if they belong with the room. The way he painted
it is interesting because he has strokes that you can obviously see, which makes the painting 100
times more interesting to me. My favorite style of Pablo Picasso's paintings were his paintings from
the blue period. I like his blue period artworks the most, foremost because as I said before
sometimes his cubism bothers me. Secondly, the blue period better represents than any of his other
artworks how he feels. During the blue period Pablo was going through a part of life where one of

Picasso's scheme of monochromatic colors of black is purposely done to show how dark war is.
Therefore, making people realize how death is a dark situation, not a light one. The points of pain
are painted light grey to emphasize desolation. Accordingly, he has the hole in the horse shaded dark
to portray emptiness. As the characters fling their heads back, their mouths are open upward towards
heaven as if they are crying out to God. He also details this by having the slain man on the ground's

Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Malaga, Spain. His full name is Pablo Diego José

Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso; a very long name representing a variety of relatives. Picasso's
mother was Doña Maria Picasso y Lopez. His father was Don José Ruiz Blasco, a painter and art
teacher. According to Biography (2017), "A serious and prematurely world–weary child, the young
Picasso possessed a pair of piercing, watchful black eyes that seemed to mark him destined for
greatness...when I was a child, my mother said to me, if you become a soldier, you'll be a general. If
you become a monk you'll end up as the pope, Instead, I became a painter and wound up as
Picasso". Picasso was a poor student but he displayed an extraordinary talent for drawing at a very
young age. According to Biography (2017), "Picasso's father began teaching him to draw and paint
when he was a child, and by the time he was 13 years old, his skill level had surpassed his father's".
Soon, Picasso lost interest to do any schoolwork and he chose to draw instead. Picasso stated in

However, Picasso made it evident that he was a gifted artist when he introduced the world to his
own style of painting during what was known as "Picasso's Blue Period." The Blue Period marked a
time in Picasso's career from 1901–1904 that defined the different real–life experiences that he had
been exposed to throughout his life. It is rumored that Picasso's blue period began briefly after the
death of a close friend, and the blue tones were used to reflect his feelings of bleakness during that
