  1. 1. Pablo Picasso  One of the greatest artists of the twentieth century.
  2. 2.  Picasso was a Spanish painter.  He was born in the city of Málaga in 1881.
  3. 3.  His father was also a painter and an art teacher.  Picasso’s first word, when he was a baby, was not Mum or Dad. It was lápiz.
  4. 4.  When he was 8, he finished his first painting, titled “Picador”.  The “picador” is a horseman who stings the bull with a lance before the “matador” appears in the arena of the bullfight.
  5. 5.  Here is a picture of Picasso with his younger sister: Conchita. She died when she was 13 and the family moved to Barcelona.
  6. 6.  Picasso studied art in an art school in Barcelona and then in Madrid.  However, he didn’t enjoy very much those schools, because he didn't want to paint like people of hundreds of years ago. He wanted to create something new. And he did!
  7. 7.  When he was 23 he moved to Paris and invented Cubism with Georges Braque.  In Cubism the artist paints an object from lots of different angles all in the same picture. So you see the front, the back and the sides of a bottle, for example, at the same time.
  8. 8.  Picasso’s artworks are often divided into periods.The most famous are: 1.The Blue Period 2.The Rose Period 3.The Cubist Period
  9. 9.  The Blue Period is a sad period. Picasso was sad because of the death of one of his friends. He painted homeless people and people from the streets.
  10. 10.  The Rose Period was a happier period. He painted people from the circus, for example.
  11. 11.  The Cubist Period is the most famous period.  This painting is called TheWeeping Woman, and it was painted in protest to the bombing of a town called Guernica in Spain.
  12. 12.  His most famous painting of all is Guernica, a mural which shows the horrors of war after the bombing of the town of Guernica.
  13. 13.  Picasso produced at least 50.000 works of art, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, and tapestries.  No other painter or sculptor was as famous as him while he was alive.  He became very wealthy.
  14. 14.  Picasso had four children: Paulo, Maya, Claude and Paloma. Paloma is famous for her jewelry designs and a perfume with her name.  Picasso died in 1973 in his house near Cannes in France.
