ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN’S TRACK
Cornelius Blair, Tarleton State University, SR, Cedar Hill, Texas, Cedar Hill HS
Blair competed in the East Texas Invita onal hosted by A&M-Commerce on Saturday. Blair took home the gold
medal in the 100m dash where he ran a career best 10.59, which was an NCAA provisional mark.
MEN’S FIELD
Gage Bowles, Texas A&M University-Commerce, SR, Seguin, Texas, Navarro HS
Bowles ed the top distance in the triple jump in the LSC this weekend and won both the triple and long jumps
at the East Texas Invita onal. In the triple jump, he leapt 50-8.25 (15.45m), tying teammate DeVontae Steele
for the longest triple jump in the league this season. He also won the long jump with a provisional qualifying
mark of 24-3.5 (7.40m).
WOMEN’S TRACK
Shanice Cameron, West Texas A&M University, SR, Bronx, N.Y., Mt. Vernon HS
Cameron now ranks third in the na on in the 100-meters a er her record breaking performance at the Ross
Black Track & Field Open this past weekend. The Bronx, N.Y. na ve ran an al tude adjusted me of 11.57 to
win the event breaking Libby Strickland’s 2014 record of 11.66. It was also a big personal best as the senior ran
.19 second faster than her previous best.
WOMEN’S FIELD
Fa m Affessi, West Texas A&M University, FR, Switzerland
Affessi con nues to show why she is one of the best young jumpers in all of Division II as she now ranks
fi h na onally in the long jump a er compe ng at the Ross Black Track & Field Open this past weekend. The
freshman’s automa c qualifying mark of 20-2.5 (6.16m) is the third-farthest in school history and breaks her
own freshman record. Affessi is one of eight athletes to have jumped over 20 feet this season.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Josh Ybarra, Lubbock Chris an University, headlined the weekend for the Chaps with a first place finish and
personal best me of 4:04.83 in the 1500-meter run. Ybarra bested his old PR by two-seconds and helped the
Chaparrals to a fi h place overall finish at the McMurry Open in Abilene, Texas.
Tyson Wieland, West Texas A&M University, had himself a produc ve weekend in southern California where
he competed in the 5,000-meters and 1,500-meters. The senior ran the fourth-fastest 5,000m me in program
history on Thursday night the Bryan Clay Invita onal crossing the line in 14:46.28. With that performance
Wieland became just the second-fastest WT runner in the event since the program was reinstated in 2009. He
finished his weekend off running 4:02.70 in the 1,500m at the Beach Invita onal.
Rascellis Williams, Tarleton State University, competed at the East Texas Invita onal hosted by A&M-
Commerce. Williams finished first in the high jump, with a jump of 6-08.00 (2.03m). This was an NCAA
provisional mark and also Williams’ second first-place on the season.
Cade Halliburton, West Texas A&M University, record a pair of runner-up finishes this past weekend at the
Ross Black Track & Field Open for the Buffs. He started the compe on off with a second place showing in the
hammer throw with a mark of 136-1 (41.49m) followed by a throw of 136-11 (41.74m) in the discus for his
second place finish of the compe on.
Amira Cunningham, Lubbock Chris an University, topped the field in first place with a 4:55.32 for her second
sub-five minute performance of the season in the 1,500-meter event. This was Cunningham’s first me to win
the 1,500-meter run and was just three-seconds shy of a personal-best me. Cunningham also competed in the
400-meter hurdles for the first me in her career and crossed the finish line in ninth place among the field.
Ashley Basse , Texas A&M University-Commerce, posted the LSC’s best 400 meter hurdle me of the season
at the East Texas Invita onal, winning the race with a me of 1:00.35. She was also the anchor leg on the
winning 4x400 meter relay team (3:48.81), and finished second in the 100 meter hurdles (14.47).
Ashley Johnson, Tarleton State University, competed at the East Texas Invita onal hosted by A&M-Commerce.
Johnson finished first in the 400m dash with a career best and NCAA provisional mark 55.94.
Ani al’a Robins, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Ani al’a Robins earned a provisional qualifying mark in the
women’s discus at 152-7 (46.51m) to win that event at the East Texas Invita onal. That is the 4th-best mark in
the LSC in that event this season.
Mikayla Morris, Tarleton State University, competed in the shot put at the East Texas Invita onal hosted by
A&M-Commerce. Morris placed second at the meet as the freshman from Whitesboro threw the shot put 40-
02.75 (12.26m). Morris also finished second in the javelin throw with a toss of 107-10 (32.87m).

Eastern New Mexico
The Eastern New Mexico track & field team has had an extremely successful spring season to this point and
registered 12 provisionally qualifying marks. The Greyhounds will return to ac on on Sunday, to compete at
West Texas A&M.
Lubbock Chris an
Lubbock Chris an men’s track closed out the 2017 McMurry Open on Thursday in Abilene, Texas. The Chaps
competed across five events and claimed fi h place in the overall team standings. Josh Ybarra headlined the
meet for the Chaps with a first place finish and personal best me in the 1500-meter run. Freshman Jaylen
Tryon was one-second shy of a first place finish and a college-best me in the 800-meter.
The Lady Chaps finished up the 2017 McMurry Open in sixth place out of 14 teams. Amira Cunningham topped
the charts with a first place finish in the 1500-meter run. Overall the Lady Chaparrals posted seven top-eight
individual finishes over the course of their five events.

The Lady Buffs stayed atop the na onal team rankings for the third consecu ve week while the Buffs fell eight
spots to No. 17. Shanice Cameron and Fa m Affessi had record breaking performances at the Ross Black Track
& Field Open in Hobbs, N.M. this past Saturday. Cameron broke Libby Strickland’s 2014 record in the 100-meter
dash while Affessi broke her own freshman record in the long jump. Both athletes now rank in the top five
na onally in those events. On the men’s side, Tobia Lahbi improved on his seasonal best in the 400-meter
hurdles at the Mt. Sac Relays. The junior ran 51.90 to finish third overall and move himself up to seventh in the
na on in the event. Tyson Wieland also had a strong performance at the Bryan Clay Invita onal where he ran
the fourth-fastest me over 5,000-meters in program history, 14:46.28.
