Digipak Analysis
1. Digipak Analysis
Connie Placito
This digipak is from an album by
indie rock band Arctic Monkeys, an
English band founded in 2002. This
digipak is interesting to analyse due
to the fact that it reveals a lot about
the indie genre which is what our
product is going to be. As we are
making a digipak for an indie album
also, I can use this research to gain
ideas and inspiration for the
planning we will soon be doing.
2. In terms of representation, these images are conventional to the indie genre. This is because the
indie genre is usually represented in a way which portrays its audience as being quite rebellious
and reckless. The fact that there are images associated with smoking reflect this conventional
representation. It also links to the idea that people who are interest in the indie genre have a
disposable income due to the fact that they are expected to go to a lot of gigs and festivals which
they can afford due to this lifestyle. This is reflected by the smoking as this is a habit which is
expensive to maintain.
3. The conventional representation is further emphasised by the fact that
there are only images of someone of the male gender on this digipak.
Through audience research I have found that the primary audience for
indie music is male and the secondary audience is female. Because of
this the use of a male on this is a conventional representation of indie
music which will appeal to their target audience as identification can
occur between the audience and the artist.
4. In general, digipaks are
mostly made up of images
with just some text which
reveals essential information
such as the artists name. The
fact that there is a larger
ratio of image that there is
text emphasises the
importance of the text that is
displayed on the digipak as
only selected information is
necessary.
5. There are many conventions of a digipack which are followed in this
example. For instance the use of the barcode which is a convention we
will follow to make out digipack look professional . We will conform to
most conventions of digipacks for example having the track list on the
back and the artist’s name on the front this is because this will make
the product recognisable to our target audience as these are the key
conventions that they would expect in a digipack.
