2. Creating Brand Identity
The band The 1975 fits into the Indie-Rock genre we felt this was important to incorporate
the current trending themes from existing products into our media products
Based on the research which I carried out on existing indie-rock bands it was apparent that
the bands/artists had similar content in both their digipak and posters, this is used to create an
identity for the album in order for their promotion to be successful and create some form of
brand identity with their newly released album.
An example of this is the Kings Of Leon album Only By The Night who use the same image
for both their digipak and poster. This includes a variety of factors such as the photograph
displayed, the colour scheme and the font used . This created brand identities the audience
has the ability to identify and recognise the artist.
In order conform to existing themes of products within the Indie-Rock genre we decided to
conform the these conventions of these existing products.
4. Digipak
I believed it was important to ensure that our digipak conformed to
the genre convention of the Indie-Rock genres our audience are able
to distinguish instantly the type of music the album would contain
and identify the genre.
After our deconstructions existing Indie-Rock genre artist and
existing products of the particular genre we was able to identify the
convention and to incorporate this into our digipak.
These conventions include a narrative the audience can relate to as
well as the use of rural locations to represent the feel of isolation.
We then incorporated these conventions into our media products to
conform conventions of the Indie -Rock genre.
5. We also decided into include imagery from our music video into
the digipak so this can enable the audience to be familiarised with
the band and they music they produced to produce a band identity
To achieve this we decided to use actual shots from our music
video to use as some of the images for our digipak. For our front
cover of the digipak we used the image as shown below and
edited this shot, this shot in the music video was a significant part
of the video as it shows the girl walking into the sun portraying her
beauty and with the light shinning down on her the represents her
importance and is an important part of our narrative, so this is why
we wanted to use this image as the main focus of our digipak.
6. We also made our digipak more relatable to our audience we included the
image of a converse shoe as on of our outside images on the digipak.
From my research into indie-rock fashion, converse shoes were popular
and with our target audience been mainly teenagers this brand of shoes
appeals to our audience. This shoe is worn by one of our main character
in our music video and shots of her shoes is demonstrated throughout the
music video with the use of ‘point of view’ shots.
They also represent the journey in which the girl takes in our music video
in order to achieve the overall out come which she desires which is to be
noticed and to be like the other girl she aspires to be. Again this is
demonstrated with the ‘point of view shots’ of her feel walking.
We also added the lyrics of the song on the outside of
our digipak. As we found this was a common
convention on other digipak we looked at such as
Arctic Monkey’s ‘AM’ album.
8. Poster
By carrying out research into poster from existing Indie-Rock artist I found
out that there is a convention of having the same image as on the front
cover of the digipak. Another example of this is Franz Ferdinand ‘You
could have it so much better’.
This is what we did for our poster in order to conform the the conventions.
By including the image of our digipak within our poster using the same
image that we used in our digipak as we did in the poster this then creates
the bands image
We also used the same some conventions of a teenager within our poster
in order to connect with are targeted audience of teenagers, these
included the gig tickets, earphones and some school reminders to
emphasise the teenage market as they would be in education.
9. We have also included logos of our production companies this is
a typical convention from the research we carried out, we also
included this on our digipak for the same reasons.
We also included social media links so fans are easily
accessible to following the band on social media to keep up to
date with any song releases and tours ect. Linking with our
audience are teenagers this is a popular promotional method to
use as teenager are main social media site users
