1. During the whole process of our group creating both our ancillary tasks,(MAGAZINE ADVERT AND DIGIPAK)
we had to keep in mind the general forms and conventions of the alternative rock genre, which meant
looking at urban environments and similar surroundings as a theme to use.
2. For our front cover of the Digipak we decided to challenge the conventions of the alternative rock genre, we done this by
putting a picture of the artist on the front cover. Normally within the alternative rock genre you would not expect to see the
artist on the front cover instead you would just have an image which is relative to the album name. Meaning that their
emphasis is on their music rather than their image. We challenged this.
Do not use picture of the artist(s)
Challenged conventions
3. However, there are several alternative rock artists that do use a picture of themselves on the front cover. They do this so
that they are able to appeal to a wider audience, or artists that do care about their image and what to be more easily
recognisable by what they look like rather than just by the sound of their music.
4. As we found costume to be a very important aspect of alternative rock, we decided to keep this convention
of alternative rock. That way it would relate more to the genre. Therefore we used this costume throughout
the digipak in order to identify more with the audience.
Smart / Casual Clothing
5. Throughout our magazine advert, digipak cover and music video, we had decided to keep the same outfit for
everything, this way all of our tasks looked consistent and professional, also it allowed our audience to easily
connect with and identify who the performer and artist is.
6. In terms of the poster, we once again challenged the general conventions within the alternative rock genre.
Normally you would not expect to see a picture of the artists. However we found that out audience still
could tell that we belonged to the alternative rock genre, and that they preferred to actually be able to see
and identify the performer.
7. For our poster and digipak, we decided to keep a consistent theme for both of them. Since alternative rock is
generally suited to urban environments we decided to use a city landscape as a consistent background in
order for audiences to know that we were in the alternative rock genre. This really worked for us as after
asking several people, they were able to tell what genre we were in.
