1. In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
2. Creating the Video
• The video started very simple, we were going to have the video in
colour so we didn’t need to use any special effects. This would also
challenge the convention of Indie music videos usually being shot in
black and white. However once we had editing the video we realised
that having the video in colour didn’t suit the song and made the
video feel more like a pop song than an Indie. We also sent out a
questionnaire and found that our target audience would also prefer
the video to be in black and white, therefore we changed it.
3. Creating the video
• The characters also Started off as a young couple and the story of their
relationship. We chose a location near where we live to make it easier for
them to get to and from the shoot. Again the characters didn’t shoot the
genre and were younger than our target audience which would make it
hard for the audience to relate to the video. The location also didn’t fit our
expectations. We then chose to take a different approach and decided to
change the characters to band members rather then a random couple, this
would also create female gaze for the audience. The questionnaire also told
us that people expect to see an Indie music video shot in a rural location
and not somewhere urban like the original location we had shot at.
Therefore we moved the filming to Matlock, Derbyshire to give the video a
more Indie feel.
4. Digipak
• We researched many Digipak’s within our genre and took the best bits
from each to make sure we created the best Digipak we could. The
front cover shows the band to create recognition as many Indie bands
are unknown. It also contains the bands name again to create
recognition. The name also has a logo at the end to create a symbol
associated to the band. Digipaks usually contain extra content to a
normal CD, therefore we added a guitar tab which allows the
audience to learn and play along to the songs available on the CD. We
also included lyrics so that the target audience can sing along creating
recognition yet again for the band.
5. Poster
• Our poster followed the theme of the video being completely back
and white. It again contained a photo of the band with their title and
logo situated above them. Indie posters are usually plain and simple
therefore we kept ours the same. The tour dates and locations are
then situated at the bottom of the poster to let the audience where
the band is playing.
