A Critique of the Proposed National Education Policy Reform
Trailer convention
1. In what ways does your media product use,
develop and challenge the forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. When looking at our media product
as a whole there are many factors
we must take into account and these
fall into the conventions of the
trailer, genre, magazine and poster.
3. Trailer
With the trailer there were many aspects that we had to consider such
as key moments that would be included, titles used and the fonts used
with them, main stars, director/producer, on screen text, and music.
Each of these elements helped us to make our product the best it could
be and I am discussing them here talking about the choices we made
and how we have developed our ideas this year and how they have
developed from last year.
4. Key moments
In our film the key moments we included were the characters moving into their
new home, this introduces the characters to the audience and the audience can
then make their own interpretations and opinions about the main characters from
the first 10 seconds.
5. Daisy finding the doll, with this there was a change in music this
showed the audience what the film was about as the focus would then
shift from the actors to the doll.
6. Matt leaving for work is another key scene, we used this in the trailer
as it would show that Daisy being 4 months pregnant and already
worrying about the baby would be left feeling vulnerable and this
would lead her to thinking the doll is possessed early on.
7. The bedroom scene is another key scene as it shows the doll first
disappearing and this will show the audience what the doll is capable
of and show what the whole film is about
8. The phone call scene is another key scene as it shows that she is
partially aware that the doll is moving and that because Matt isn’t
there he may think she is worrying too much about the baby that it is
making her look crazy to Matt.
9. The characters arguing in the study was another key scene that we included,
we specifically shoes this scene because as she is the first one shown in the
study it shows she has more authority as she is always in the home, with this
she is stating her claim that the doll has been moved and thinks that Matt
has moved the doll, here they are arguing over the situation and Daisy is left
thinking Matt doesn’t believe her and this would create hostility and make
them feel distant and more vulnerable.
10. The doll being covered is another key scene as it shows that Matt
concerned for Daisy about the doll and will do anything to try and
comfort her, this is where he covers the doll with the scarf the doll was
found in and when they walk back the doll is sitting on the scarf with it
folded. This shows that there is something strange about the doll but
Matt is still questioning it
11. The bath of blood was another key scene as it shows that the doll is
confirmed to be possessed and this shows both characters in the scene
at the same time this makes the doll being possessed more real for
both characters and they are aware that something needs to be done.
12. The Vicar scene is another key scene we included as it shows that the
doll is innocent when the couple have company or are trying to solve
the situation but when they are home alone the doll is clearly a danger
to them both.
13. Titles
For the tiles we were to choose a style of font that would reflect the trailer this
would create a much eerier feeling when the audience read the tiles and the film
name on screen. With this there is a blacked out screen this means that the titles
are in white and this is used at the start of the trailer saying “From the producers of
Bad Blood, Insomnia and Sweet Insanity” with this we match the conventions of
other trailers such as The Conjuring 2 by giving reference to previous films made by
the same company, with this here is a fade upwards showing the tile appear and
disappear, with the music this creates a very dismal and almost awe like feel for the
audience. As well as this we match the conventions of other trailers by having the
title of the film at the end of the trailer, this would create a better effect as it would
be the last thing the audience sees of the trailer and this means the name would be
more memorable, this is also more memorable as the title of the film is written in
the same typeface for the poster and magazine this gives reference to other
products made for the film and this means that they typeface is more memorable
and easy to recognise.
14. Main star
The main stars names are given throughout the trailer, this shows the audience
who is playing what role and as there is reference to previous films it means that
the audience may be able to recognise them if they are familiar with the previous
products. The main stars names show when they are on screen and with this the
same style of font is used for the actor’s names as for the titles at the start of the
film. With this we have challenged the conventions as other horror films do not do
this and this means that our film is more authentic and original and the audience
will know more from our trailer.
15. Director/producer
The director and producers are mentioned in this trailer, they are
referenced in the first 10 seconds of the trailer, with this it gives
reference to previous films made and this shows the audience what has
been produced and if they see the previous films and this one they will
recognise some of the characters and will want to see the film
Pengyeulan more as they recognise the actors and the directors and
producers will be recognised as well as they were responsible for the
previous films
16. On screen text
On screen text is used to entice the viewer of the trailer to see the film, with this we have
reference to previous films made and the directors and producers, with this the audience
will recognise the films and director and be a fan of their work and want to see this new
film. Throughout the trailer there is on screen text showing the actors names and this
shows the audience who is playing the roles in the film, as well as this the slogan, “it’s all
fin and games until the doll wants to play”, is also shown in the trailer and this shows it
broken up between shots and this means that as they audience will read more of the
slogan it will make them want to see the rest of the trailer and entice them into watching
the film. As well as this the title of the film is shown in the same typeface as on the poster
and magazine therefore giving reference to other products for the film and making a link
for the audience and as the typeface is so unique it makes it more memorable for the
audience. As well as this in the last 10 seconds it doesn’t give a specific date but it says
“Coming this October” this is used as the Empire magazine reads “Top 10 Halloween
specials and by making this link and releasing the film in this time helps establish it as a
horror”
17. Music
With this there are several soundtracks for the film. When we were making
the film we had already made 2 soundtracks, 1 for when the characters move
into their and one for when Daisy finds the doll, when it came to putting the
music with the footage the music was too fast paced and didn’t follow the
flow of the film so new music had to be made with this it was much slower
and more high frequency this would make the audience feel uneasy and
drawn in and in awe as the music is used to reflect the genre of the film and
with this it also has an upbeat melody to show a happy scene at the start for
them moving in. Then when they find the doll the music changes and
becomes louder for the audience to hear and this means that as the music
gets louder with the doll on screen it establishes what the focus of the film is
and the audience will become more enticed with the intense music
