The document discusses the effectiveness of the main film and its ancillary advertising products, a radio trailer and film poster. It was trying to portray a boy (Harry) liking a girl (Emily) but she likes his best friend (Callum) instead. Both the radio trailer and film poster reflect this complication. The film poster specifically shows Emily looking at Callum, not Harry, and Harry and Callum shaking hands. It uses bright colors and stars to attract attention and convey the film's genre. Comparisons are made to real film posters like Megamind and Definitely Maybe that also utilize central characters, bright colors, and complications to sell romantic comedy films.
How effective is synergy between main product and ancillary texts
1. 2) How effective is the
combination of your main
product and the ancillary
(poster/radio trailer) texts?
BY HAYLEY HALL
2. What were you trying to achieve in your main production? Was this
also reflected in the two advertising products?
In the main production we were trying to reflect a boy (Harry) liking a girl (Emily), however
‘complication’ of the film is that Emily actually likes his best friend (Callum). In the radio
trailer it emphasises the fact that Callum and Harry are best mates, and that there are
many complications in the film. The film poster represents the complication in the film as
Emily is looking at Callum rather than Harry, this shows the audience that there are
complications in the film as Harry is trying to get Emily to be his girlfriend. The film
poster also represents the complication in the film as Callum and Harry are shaking
hands, however if Harry knew what Emily and Callum were really doing, Harry would
have been friends with Callum. The film poster title and the title of the film is the same
so that we use synergy throughout the production and the ancillary products.
This shows Emily looking at Callum rather than Harry.
This shows the use of synergy
throughout the main product and the
ancillary products.
3. The actors names
above their character.
The hand shake is used
in the film and also
represents the friendship
between Harry and
Callum.
Emily is looking at
Callum rather than
Harry which represents
the complication in the
film.
The title is in pink which
represents love and is a
bright colour which
represents happiness.
The titles are at the
bottom of the film poster
so that audience can see
who has been involved in
the production of the film.
The age rating of the film
and the production logo.
Here we have used star
ratings to show the
audience what film
critics think of the film.
4. How effective do you think the film
poster is in selling your production?
The film poster uses realistic images of the characters so that the audience
know who each character in the film is before they watch the film. The film
poster also uses the same title as in the main film which keeps synergy on all
platforms. Star ratings are also used on the film poster to show the audience
what critics think about the film, therefore is critics think the film is good it
encourages the audience to also watch the film.
The film poster also uses bright colours which attract the audiences attention
especially on the title where pink is used which connotates love and
happiness.
The film poster also portrays Harry and Callum to be best friends as they are
shaking hands, this shows the audience that there are many complications in
the film and will make the audience want to find out what these complications
are.
5. How effective do you think the radio
advert is in selling your production?
The radio trailer is also effective in selling the film as the same voice is used
throughout the film meaning it is catchy. The voice is also cheeky which
represents fun and makes people want to find out what the complications are in
the film. The radio trailer mentions that there are many complications in the film
but does state what these complications are, this makes the audience want to
find out and grabs their attention and encourages them to go and watch the
film. The radio advert also encourages people to go to the cinema, this is
something that people may do as a date and therefore represents the love side
of the film while at the same time encouraging people to go and watch the film
in the cinemas, this is an effective way in selling the production. The radio
trailer also has sound from the film which is bright and bubbly and represents
happiness and the love Harry has for Emily, this sound will grab the audiences
attention as it is catchy which will make them remember the film and encourage
them to watch the film when it comes out in cinemas.
6. The Teaser Poster
The film teaser poster also reflects complication with the symbols in the
background which make the audience wonder what will happen in the
film. With the question mark and the ellipsis which is used to add
tension which shows the tension which could be created between Harry
and Callum if Harry knew what was really going on with Callum and
Emily.
The romance side to the film poster is also shown with the Love Heart
Symbol and also the bright pink colours which represent love and
happiness.
After taking part in audience research on this poster we decided to use
this as a teaser poster and use a realistic image rather than a cartoon
image on the actual film poster. The audience also felt that the title
needed to be made bigger and that the star ratings needed adding to
the film poster.
7. Teaser Film Poster.
Love heart to
represent
Harry’s love for
Emily.
Pink represents
love and
happiness.
The Question Mark
represents
complication and
indications the
question as to whether
Harry and Callum are
really friends.
Emphasis’s the
tension between
Harry and Callum if
Harry was to know
what was
happening with
Emily and Callum.
Where Harry’s heart would be it is
pink which represents the love Harry
has for Emily and the numerous
ways he goes to get her attention.
8. How effective do you think the film
teaser poster is in selling your
production?
The film poster is eye catching and bright which catches the
audience attention and through doing this it promotes
the film as people what to find out what the film is about
and what is the complication in the film is. The colours
on the film poster are also relatively similar so that they
all match and show continuity throughout the poster so
that nothing stands out for the wrong reasons or doesn’t
match. Harry the main character is in the centre of the
poster which shows the audience that Harry is the main
character and encourages them to find out the length he
will go to find love. Harry as a cartoon on the front of the
poster connotates the fun and comedy side of the film, in
connection with the pink body which represents the
romance side of the film. Harry as a cartoon also
represents the mystery he is to Emily as Emily is
unaware of his intentions and the ways he tries to get
her to become his girlfriend.
9. Make comparisons with real
advertising products-Megamind
One film which has similar features to our film is MegaMind, despite this
film not being a romantic comedy film it contains many of the same
features which we used in our film. Like our poster the colours on
this film poster are bright and eye catching which catches the
audiences attention. The main character is also in the centre of the
poster just like our and the character is also cartoon. This film is for
children and therefore the character being in cartoon represents the
fun side to the film which children like. The title of the film is also
situated in the same place as our film which grabs the audience’s
attention as they can see the name of the film which will then
encourage them to go and see the film in cinemas. The writing of the
title is also the same as the women’s top in the poster. This is similar
to our poster as we used the bright pink which represented love.
10. Bright and eye
catching colours.
The light represents that she
is the main character. For
example; the centre of the
stage.
The white matches this is
similar to our film poster with
the pink matching.
Showing the audience that she is the main
character.
Telling the audience when
it is in cinema’s. This
allows them to put it in
their diaries so they
remember.
Cartoon Character just like our poster,
creates a sense of fun to the film.
Showing the different platforms the film can be
viewed on. (IMAX 3D)
Showing the audience that it is
a DreamWorks film, therefore
if they like other DreamWorks
films then they are more likely
to like this one which therefore
encourages them to go and
watch it.
11. Make comparisons with real
advertising products-Definitely Maybe
Another film which has similar features to our film poster is ‘definitely maybe’.
This film is the same genre as our film: Romantic Comedy. The film’s main
character is in the centre of the film poster just like ours where Harry is in
the centre of the film poster. This film poster doesn’t use bright colours
however states other films which the makers have created, this grabs the
audience’s attention as if they like those films then they are more likely to
also like this film, which therefore encourages them to watch this film. This
film also shows the main character having complications with his love like
just like Harry who experiences many complications on his journey to get
Emily to become his girlfriend. In Definitely Maybe, the main character has
3 relationships which end in disasters just like Harry’s does when he finds
his best friend with the girl which he likes. In our radio advert we state what
genre the film is just like this film poster does at the top of the film poster.
12. The main character is in the
centre of the poster. This shows
the audience what the film is
based around.
The title is in the same
place as our title.
Uses love heart symbols, this
is similar to our poster and the
love heart is also broken to
show the disasters in the film.
Showing that the main
character has disasters in
finding love just like Harry does
in our film.
Tells the audience that the
film is coming soon.
Telling the audience what the genre of the film
is, this is used in our radio trailer when we tell
the audience that our film is a romantic
comedy film. This means that if the audience
like romantic comedy films then it will
encourage them to watch this film.
If people like the films listed
then, it encourages them to
watch this film as they may
also like this film.
