2. DELETE THIS SLIDE ONCE COMPLETE
• Choose a film and discuss its marketing campaign
• Choose a blockbuster film (potentially from a franchise) with widespread
appeal.
• Analyse at least one;
– Trailer
– Poster
– Interview
– Reference the film’s target audience
• Use https://yougov.co.uk/opi/profileslite#/ or work with your tutor to designate a target
audience.
– Reference reasons why they may have been constructed in such a way and
how the construction appeals to the audience.
• Trailer- content of the video clips, music, listing of stars/previous films/directors, genre
codes and conventions, relevance of release date, tone created etc
• Poster- content of images, colour, text/fonts, layout, listing of stars/previous
films/directors, tone created etc
• Interview- relevance of who its with, what time of day it might be broadcast, discussion
points, interviewers target audience etc
3. Poster
• Content of images
• The images you see on the poster are just the main two actors
making funny and happy faces to give of the playful nature of
the film that’s more apparent in the trailer this is probably to
make the tone consistent from both the trailer and poster. You
also have the actors faces placed in throughout the entire poster
as to show that these two people are the selling point of the film
and people will likely see it because there faces are all over the
poster. To have these actors on the poster will appeal to 2 types
of people. The UK public will see it because Simon Pegg has a
huge audience there more so than the US and the US will be
somewhat attached to Simon Pegg given his success in the US
and also from Lake Bell who has gained susses from supporting
roles in other romantic comedies such as Its Complicated and No
Strings Attached. So there is something for both markets in this
poster. As for colour the only distinct colours in the poster are
black grey and red. Red is the font used for the main title simply
because it is a colour that makes the words more luminous and
helps it stand out. This choice in colour might be used because
according to the colour wheel pro red is the symbolism for desire
and love which given this is a rom com these are elements that
come into play in the narrative of the film. The light red
especially represents joy, sexuality, sensitivity and love. This
being a film about love and it having a joyful tone. This choice in
colour makes sense.
4. Poster
• Text/fonts
– The first bit of text you see is a tagline that reads “two
total strangers, One big lie, A blind date like no other”
Both 3 sentences are small and simple while still helping
underlining the main theme of the movie in that it’s a
blind date that goes wrong but something good comes out
of it. The reason for the font is that it gives the audiences
and the general public further information on what the
film is about, who are the actors and the tagline to give
the audiences a bit of context of the premise. The use of
white in the font in this poster may seam like nothing to
some but according to the colour wheel pro the colour
white is associated with brightness, goodness, and
cleanliness. Both these aspects are traits that the
characters and the overall film give out and the marketing
team want to put further emphasis on the tone through
the advertising so small little details like the colour of font
can give the audiences a sense of brightness and
innocence without having to notice the font. This wouldn’t
be the same if the font was dark which isn’t a very positive
and welcoming colour compared to white. The images in
the poster are laid out in a way where both lead actors
are prominent and one does not overlap the other. The
reason for this is because that the film is about
5. Poster
• Listing of stars/previous films/directors
• The stars are the first people listed in the poster as it’s
often the first thing people think about when they hear
the name of the film is who’s in it more so then who made
it. This why you mostly see the names of the actors first
before the director or producer’s. When you do see the
names of the director’s/producers they tend not to list
their names except other then adding in the previous
films they have worked on. That way the general public is
given more of a hint that this film has potential for quality
because they have heard of the films that the producers
and directors have worked on. The tone of the poster is
played as very upbeat, playful and quirky mainly to not
mislead the viewer of the type of film they are walking
into. If the poster was played serious then it would create
the wrong impression of the people who walk into it
expecting something serious. So the tone of the poster is
meant to appeal to the audience who go to a rom com for
the joy of it all. They will want some clarification that this
is the film that they want to see and goanna get so that is
why the poster is played up in that tone.

7. Trailer
• Content of the video clips
• The bits they show you in the start of the trailer summarize the main
character’s insecurities which come into play in the actual film. They do
this by showing you a scene where the central protagonist is staring at her
mirror before going out on a supposed date with a man. It shows her
talking to herself saying that “you can do this” before putting makeup on.
The trailer cuts to a short version of her date and how badly it went by her
trying to be funny but failing tremendously. The first 11 seconds you now
have a idea on the person you will be watching and how much she messes
up at dating and relationships. Now its going to show you the story it will
set her on. They do this by only showing expositional dialogue that’s
relevant to the conflict of the film. The first thing you see after 11 seconds
is the girl she meets on the train and her talking about her plan to meet her
blind date and how This is then leads to Nancy (the main character)
making a quip in her usual behavioral manner, thus putting the further
emphasis on the comedy aspect in order to appeal to that audience of
people who want to see a film to have a laugh that’s present in the film.
The trailer then shows what happens and how she meets the love interest
only with cuts that happen every 5-10 seconds following it up with a
montage of the couple bonding and having a good time before playful and
upbeat music stops to reveal the conflict that will indelibly come into play
in the third act. This then continues with a montage of the characters
either bickering while still showing them having fun along with some
wacky bits of comedy. With this I feel the trailer is balancing out the
comedy and drama aspects so there is something for the group of people
who love comedy, and for the people who are prefer comedy’s to have a
serious element to them and not be constant shtick. The music choices
mainly consist of popular songs that have a happy and upbeat tone, they
are there to give a eutrophic and uplifting feeling to sort of mimic what
feeling you will have if you payed your hard earned money to watch it
watched it. Other songs featured earlier on play off the

8. Trailer
• Listing of stars/previous films/directors
– The stars are listed because the producers know full
well the actors featured are their highest selling point,
and that it is going to get there film so interest from
the general public who like these people. The actors
are not the only people listed. However the trailer
vaguely mentions that this film is from the same
producers who have collaborated with Simon Pegg
with Shaun of the dead and Hot Fuzz. Their names will
be unrecognisable to the public but including what
they have done in the past will be another important
factor in getting there film to sell because film fans will
get the impression that there is potential in their
product for a quality film knowing that their previous
efforts where critical and financial hits and both have
an star who is also in this film knowing what they have
produced will get Is the order of the list significant?
– Is the absence of a list significant?
• Genre codes and conventions
– How do you identify the film trailer as part of a genre?
– Why would creating a genre in the trailer be useful?

9. Trailer
• Relevance of release date
Relevance of release is very important when advertising
any piece of media as it gives your target audience
clarification of when the film they have been very
interested in is out and available to go to their multiplex
and see your product. Without the inclusion of when
you plan to release your film there is no way for your
target audience to keep up to date of when you plan to
release it out for them. The tone of the trailer is played
mostly upbeat and positive with a little bit of quirk
added in. When the serious stuff comes in it is often very
mild and not over dramatic. Simply because of the jokes
added in those moments. For example in the scene
where Pegg’s character Jack is distraught at the lie Bell’s
character Nancy has created he asks about her really
being 26 to which Nancy responds “add another 10”
Moments like that create keep the comedic nature of
the film going and makes the tone more consistent.
More importantly The films target audience (who are
mostly women roughly between the ages of late 20’s
early 30’s) Still are not given the impression of the film
turning sombre. Even at its most dramatic there is still
some laughs and charm in the film

11. Interview
– This is in interview with Simon Pegg as a part of
the kermode and mayo radio podcast with Zoe
Ball. In this interview the language from Pegg is
very well spoken Simon Pegg’s audience ranges
from 18 to 24 year old males with a social grade
of C2DE so these will probably be the people
who will probably be tuning in on their radio’s
to listen to him talk about his latest effort, or
they simply because they like him as an
entertainer and will enjoy any interview with
him regardless they see the film or not.
According to Pegg in this interview it is
established by him that the screenwriter had
connections with the same producer that Pegg
works with so the producer Nira Park sent the
script through email as she thought that he
would be perfect for the role of Jack. Pegg was
immediately hooked by it enough to want to
take part in the project. Kermode and mayo show

12. Interview
– The interviews normally happen roughly happen in the afternoon
between 4 and 6. This is perfect timing as rush hour traffic happens
between this time because people will be driving home from work
and will most likely be tuning in to help past the time through the
traffic. It helps that the podcasts are mostly aimed at people between
35-50 and they are often a part of the working class so they will have
the radio channel on while they are driving home. One of the many
discussion points is the subjects of dating and blind dates and how
tough dating is. This is one of the central themes that comes into play
in the film so they are going to talk about it in more depth. They also
talk about dating is not what is used to be because we live in a digital
age and how you cant really have a blind date any more because it is
easy to identify someone through Facebook and twitter and know
something about them before you meet them. The reason these
topics are brought up is because the films target audience or any
person looking for love but is too shy can identify and relate to that
subject and maybe even be convinced to check out the film because it
is a topic that they probably haven’t seen in any film. So the film has
the characters be not enthusiastic on social media so they can meet as
strangers and not know what the person looks like when they meet
them. Another important topic they bring up is that men love the film
which is very rare for a romantic comedy but in their opinions
romantic comedies should be about both sides of the coin. Meaning
that film does what it sets out to do as a romcom. Another aspect as
to why Pegg was drawn into the script was because he felt his
character was very real and flawed and rang true to how men can act
sometimes. Realism is a thing that is often criticised in rom-coms for
not having so to hear that a rom com is realistic in some aspects is
going to raise some eyebrows from a few film fans

14. Marketing Strategy
• Discuss relevant notable information you have noticed regarding the marketing
strategy of the film, e.g.;
– The UK trailer for Man Up was released on the 20th of 2015 2 months before its theatrical
release to UK cinemas on the 29th of May 2015. The US trailer released on the 1st of October
2015 which is a month before its release in the US on the 13th of November. The interview
with Simon Pegg was broadcast on the day it came out on the 29th of May the same day its
theatrical release in UK cinemas which gives the general public clarification that if they wanted
to see the film that has being talked about it is no available at their local. The trailer was also
released on Studiocanal’s (the UK distributor) twitter in order to further promote the film as
that is where your product is most likely to get views and attention. There was even facebook
and twitter pages dedicated to the film in order to further promote it. Unlike a big $100
million movie where there would be loads of merchandise and franchising and partnerships
from toy companies and fast-food restaurants McDonald Man Up was not big enough of a film
to gain that but there was a lot of marketing and placement of posters on bus stops. Many of
which where the posters with the one star of the film giving audiences summary of what the
character is in the film. There where 30 ads that also broadcast on TV so if you don’t use social
media and don’t go out much your attention towards the film will be brought up through TV
broadcasting.
