Northern California
California is the most populated state in the United States as of 2014 with 38.8 million residents.
California is one of the most popular states for vacationing and adventures. With more of a variety
of places to live, more job opportunities, and more adventures for families and friends, many people
choose California to live. Although America has many great places to live, California is the best
state to live in. It is just about the only state that is different from one end to the other. Starting at
cold northern California that has snow and ski resorts, traveling through Central California where it
is warm, and down to southern California where weather is hot and can find the famous beaches and
amusement parks. Northern California is the coolest area. During winter, snow is very much
welcomed. Northern California has some of the most beautiful and popular ski resorts. Northern
California is a popular vacation spot for hikers because of the mountains and forest areas. The
Redwood National State and Parks are located north of California as well as Lake Tahoe. Napa
Valley and the wine train has thousands of tourists all year round but is most popular in the spring
and summer.

California has famous beaches such as Laguna Beach and the very popular Venice Beach. Many
movies get filmed on Venice Beach. The most highly tourist attractions and the most overly crowded
area is Hollywood. The most visited area is Sunset Blvd and the side walk of stars. Aside from the
weather and adventures, California has a variety of diverse job opportunities to choose

California Drought
"California's water future is increasingly uncertain," says Heather Cooley, in her article California
Needs Better Water Management and Pricing Policies (Source A). Agriculture uses 80 percent of
California's constrained water supply and proves to be the primary source of California's drought.
There has been no permanent and largely successful conservation effort to save water. However,
with a reformed water management and conservation system, California's largest industry,
agriculture, can thrive while saving water at the same time. In Stop Water Abuse by the Almond and
Pistachio Empire by Wenonah Hauter (Source C), Hauter suggests that restrictions on irrigation
should be made in arid areas of California. These dry areas of California

California Drought : California And Alaska
California Drought
California is the state located in southwest of the North America and is the third largest state beside
Texas and Alaska. California is well known for its sunny and friendly weather. Other than that,
abundant job opportunities, great education, and rich culture draw many resettlers not only
Americans moving from other states, but also immigrants resettling here from all over the world.
Large population will certainly increase the demand of water and food to fulfill the basic human
needs. Yet one fact shows that the total urban water usage in California only accounts for roughly
ten percent. Food actually requires more water to produce than the urban uses. Agriculture in
California plays an huge role as producer and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of letting the drought conditions become worse, both agricultural practice and personal
habits have to be changed. Only understanding how to use water efficiently as well as how to
conserve water effectively are the only ways to survive from water crisis. This is a challenge for
every Californian, agricultural provider and the state governor.
Before finding solutions for the drought trends, knowing where California get its water supply is
essential. Colorado River system provides an important source of water for Southern California and
supports Los Angeles and San Diego County, where dwell the most population in the south. The
reliable water resource lessen the current water stress and drought problems as well as given enough
water for domestic use . However, water supply from the Colorado river can only be considered as a
short–term solution in terms of drought. Expanding urban area and growing population in Southern
California increase the demand of water, and on top of that California is not the only thirsty state
that shares water supply from the same river system. Michael Wines emphasises that
These new realities are forcing a profound reassessment of how the 1,450–mile Colorado, the
Southwest's only major river, can continue to slake the thirst of one of the nation's fastest–growing
regions. Agriculture, from California's Imperial Valley to Wyoming's cattle herds, soaks up about
three–quarters of its water, and produces 15 percent of the nation's food.

The Issue Of Simmering California
Simmering California In a recent survey by the University of Southern California nearly 75 percent
of voter state that "relations between people of different races were "good" or "excellent" in their
own neighborhoods" (Abrams). Yet these same participants agree that black men and woman face
more discrimination than any other race. Though racial discrimination in California has mitigated
considerably over the years it is still a major problem. The peak of racial tensions occurred early on
in California's past. The Gold rush was a difficult time for immigrants in California. Many came in
search of prosperity and instead found a place full of rules and regulations specifically designed to
place them at a disadvantage. The many Chinese immigrants arriving at this time faced extreme
racism. insert lisa see quote here Many Chinese miners had to pay unbelievable foreign mining taxes
on top of having to mine mostly in abandoned mining grounds. To make ends meet they took on
jobs as cooks, launders, and other jobs. They were paid low wages and had to face discriminatory
hiring practices. The sudden flood of people caused tensions between the natives and the miners to
rise. Miners were invading and destroying native lands. Out of desperation, the Native Americans
began pillaging mining camps for supplies. Incensed by the raids, miners began to hunt down the
indigenous population and were often time supported by the government. The situation never really
improved since then. In

California Drought
In accordance with Adam Nagourney and Jack Healy's New York Times article, " Drought Frames
Economic Divide of Californians," it is believed that the residents of California are economically
divided which determines the amount of water they consume. In the two cities of comparison,
Cowan Heights and Compton, consumption of water has a lot to do with the residents financial
background. The daily water consumption rate for the residents of Cowan Heights, whose household
median income is $122,662, was 572.4 gallons per person. The daily water consumption rate for the
residents of Compton, whose household median income is
$42,953, was 63.6 gallons per person. We can conclude that the more money one makes, the more
water he consumes and the less ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the drought, Governor Jerry Bown of Californina, ordered a statewide twenty– five percent
cut in urban water consumption. This statewide water consumption cut will result in, "forcing the
state's biggest water users, which include some of the wealthiest communities, to bear the brunt."
The water consumption for the residents of Cowan Heights is higher than the residents of Compton
because they can afford it. Stephanie Pincetl, the director of the California Center for Sustainable
Communities at the University of California, Los Angeles, states, "They have bigger properties.
They are less price sensitive. So if you can afford it, you use it." The attitudes toward water
consumption are different between the residents of the two cities. One resident of Compton, Alysia
Thomas, stated, "she tells her children to skip a bath on days when they do not play outside; that
holds down the water bill." Although both cities have different attitudes; they both have to face the
same circumstances if they do not cut back on water consumption. California distribute fines to
those who do not conserve water. One wealthy resident of Cowan Heights, Mr. Sears, bimonthly
water bill was regularly between four– hundred and five–hundred dollars, but it has went as high as

California Water Rights
Water resources in the state of California have deteriorated drastically as a result of the current
drought event in the west coast of the United States. This has resulted in insufficient supplies of
water to residents of southern California, as well as the devastation of wildlife and aquatic
ecosystems that are characteristic of this area. This policy analysis will provide the context of the
issue, as well as possible solutions, followed by a proposed policy plan to reach the policy goal of
equitable and reliable water allocation in the state of California, drought resilience, as well as
restoration of the destroyed ecosystems.

state in 1848. Water was still in short supply, and the US Bureau of Reclamation was established in
1902 in order to manage water resources in the area. During this period, water from the Sierra
Nevada Mountain Range was used extensively for residential, as well as commercial and industrial,
uses including gold mining. This was also the time during which the first water market arose – as a
system to sell water to gold miners. However, in 1886, these prior appropriation rights conflicted
with the Riparian water rights policies used throughout the rest of the United States. Throughout the
rest of the country, Riparian water rights were in effect. Riparian water rights allocates water to
those who own land along the path of the waterway. This conflict resulted in a combined policy of
both Riparian and Prior Appropriation rights within the state (USCD Center for Environmental
Economics). Southern California perhaps has seen the most conflict over water than the rest of the
United States. The area surrounding Los Angeles and San Diego has virtually no fresh water source
naturally and requires irrigation from the north. These two cities have continually conflicted over
water allocations from the Colorado

California Drought
The golden state suffers from extreme drought that begins since three years. The drought start
because the climate changes which cause lack of snowpack on top of mountains that milts and fill
California lakes. Another climate changes are the high temperature, which cause agriculture draught
that requires more water. The underlying problem after this drought that farmers have lost their jobs
and the lakes, which is the source of water in California drought. The draught this year is the worst
in the state's history and the water will not last for more than one year. The drought reflection on
California and the issue that is appears as a result of that. Since 2012 California drought has started

The most consideration that matters to every working American is how this crisis will affect the cost
of living. After that how much work forces have to cut off estimating that 17,000 from worker jobs
are going to be lost. Since this is the third driest year that it's been a pretty bad drought for
California. A lot of waterfalls as rain or snow up in the north in the eastern mountains are cutting off
because the climate changes. This crisis and lack of jobs cause many problems in the community,
drug use crime and poverty increased as a result of this water crisis. The governor Brown imposed a
mandatory water boundary that requires all California's cities and towns to decline their usage of
water by 25%. They had been wasting water until the beginning of April when the governor gave a
mandatory order to reduce the use of water. Also, he asks farmers to have water management plans.
The governor asks people to prevent wasting water and encourage them to conserve the water from

California Drought
Background
The current drought in California is the state's driest period in rainfall history. California is entering
the fifth year in the drought. In 2015, there was a 2.7 billion revenue loss from agriculture industries
in California and 10,100 job losses (Howitt, 2). Archeological evidence shows that prehistoric
populations in the western region of the United States such as the Chumash dealt with the medieval
climate anomaly or also known as "Little Ice Age" (Fagan, 14). The Little Ice Age was a global
climate interval that consisted of "extended periods of drought, increased precipitation, or extreme
swings in moisture" and "northern Europe, for instance, were subjected to several years of long
winters and short, wet summers" (Rafferty, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They perform their own research to insure the public health and maintain safe water drinking

Also provide farmers insurance if crops fail, especially those grow in drought conditions.
California Environmental Water Caucus was formed in 1991 to "achieve comprehensive, sustainable
water management solutions for all Californians" stated in their official website, ewccalifornia.org.
In their website they currently oppose the Tunnels Project because the construction plans does not
allow water to flow "for the health of both the Delta and the Bay"
California Farm Water Coalition (CFWC) is interest group created by farmers in agriculture counties

water and provide a common, unifying voice for agricultural water users" established in the CFWC
website, farmwater.org. They highly promote innovative efforts for farmers to conserve water.

The California Earthquake
California Earthquakes California's unique geography as a state makes it a very appealing place to
call home. From the odd east to west transverse San Gabriel mountain ranges of the Los Angeles
Basin, to the bumpy coastal ranges of the Bay Area, any person can find a compatible topographic
terrain to their liking. California may seem to be the perfect place to live with its ideal climate and
extensive geographic features. However, due to California's location over the shifting continental
plates, coupled with its enormous and also multiple faults, at any time this great state can fall victim
to a seismic disaster. After examining evidence from both Rong–Gong Lin's II Los Angeles Times
article of April 18, 2016 and the NOVA videos Killer Quake ( 2006), Earthquake (2007), as well as
Geologic Journey II – Episode 3 (The Pacific Rim: Americas) – Part 3 (San Francisco) and The
Great San Francisco Earthquake (American Experience ~ 2005), one can take a comparative account
of the three major earthquakes of California's past. Although each earthquake was very devastating
on is own; the Great Quake 0f 1906, the Loma Prieta quake of 1989, and the NorthRidge quake of
1994 each amounted to an extensive forfeiture of property and life. Each of these earthquakes
created much suffering and loss. It is imperative for each citizen of this great state to understand the
damage that a California quake can actually do and be prepared; for the threat of one always looms.

Drought In California

Water Issues California was in a massive drought just this past year which became known as a state
emergency. Many homeowners and ranchers pumps went dry because California was deprived of
water. Many farmers had to drill there wells deeper to reach the water table, so they could keep their
crops alive. However, the homeowners who didn't have the money to drill another well, had to go to
their local Fire station or water supply to get their own water in a tank. Just this past winter
California was hit with a lot of rain and they didn't seem ready for it, therefore California should
have acted upon the issues prior to the wet winter such as more dams, water reservoirs, functioning
dams, or simply have pumps to push water underground to store it. ... Show more content on

The Oroville dam is prime example of why California needs to be keeping up on their maintenance
with important spillways like these. "Oroville had an infrastructure failure which caused a sinkhole
due to all the water being released" said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist from UCLA(E&E News).
This wouldn't have happened if California would have put money towards this to fix it instead of
using it on a train. Considering the Oroville dam was shut down due to the infrastructure failure, the
water went down the access dam which is all dirt. California should have thought about that and put
concrete because with thousands of gallons of water rushing down, it will cause another

Education In California
California's Master Plan for Higher Education was signed by Governor Pat Brown, and officially
passed the law in 1960. Once established by California State into State legislature, it was a
commitment from the state to develop the best higher education system for all educators especially
the tuition will be free and every educator can have access to higher education. In 1950, there were
only two institutions that offered higher education. Large population of students with less space in
classroom size placed lots of college students automatically in waiting lists. As a result, the rate of
graduation was declining. Therefore, each and every region in California started to construct more

Cutting the state budget on education generate financial crisis for lots of learner to keep focusing on
advanced education. The high cost of University education not only threatens them to own huge
amount of students' debt but also dropping out of higher education system. Today, it is very obvious
matter between the increasing rates of college dropout with the increasing rate of crime in
California. According to Harry Johnson, a Senior Fellow at ICF International in Washington, DC
pointed out that "School failures and exclusion predict poor life outcome and are implicated in the
mass incarceration of boys and young men of colors" (Wilson 49). The purpose of education is to
develop individual skill in intellectual, cultural, personal traits and so on. Since the state fail to offer
students with education, most of the illiterate couldn't provide for the daily ends meet. So, they
became homeless and some even committing several crimes to put the food on the tables, the shelter
over their heads. Educational attainment may affect subsequent criminal decisions. Millions of
people who migrate to big cities have difficulties in finding a well–paid job and meeting their needs.
Moreover they may be deprived of receiving a good education. Because of this, they are obligated to
resort to illegal ways in order to afford their expenses. Eventually, lack of education constitutes a
threat to society in country. It plays a leading role in increasing crime rates. In the other word, it is
vital governments should determine and take initiative to invest their money for education by
offering financial aid or California grants for college students. Higher education institutions can help
students work on voicing themselves and their group in society. As any group of people in society

Essay On California
I think I am slightly confused by the statement, "the authors of your text make an argument that
California should stand as a separate region of the United States and Canada." Does that mean as its
own region in the book or as its own self–governed country within the continent of North America?
I believe there has been some talk in the media about the idea that California could try to secede
from the US. I think if any state could conceivably stand as its own country, California would
definitely be in the running, due to the fact that it seems to have a little bit of everything
encompassed in over 163,000 square miles. Obviously, there are mountains throughout the state, but
in terms of vegetation it ranges from coniferous forest type trees ... Show more content on

I am not sure where exactly the dividing line should be drawn, simply that it seems silly to try and
create a region out of an area that clearly fits in all three diverse regions.
I think the California gold rush could have contributed to the hold California has on the American
imagination. I think that even if they were unable to strike it rich, just the possibility of the hope, the
dream that it could happen was enough to prompt a large influx of people into the state throughout
the 1800's. In modern times, I think the perceived mystique of Hollywood and Disney continue to be
a huge draw for the American public.
The Pacific Northwest is distinctive due to the fact that many areas are isolated from the rest of the
North America by land and are only accessible by air or water (Hardwick, Shelley & Holtgrieve.)

California Water Infrastructure
Infrastructure of California's Water supply System:
. "California is home to one of the most extensive water supply systems in the nation." The state's
water supply system consist of over 1,000 reservoirs, hundreds of groundwater basins and many
local and regional water conveyance systems. It is a system that is quite remarkably engineered to
say the least (California's Water: California Water Systems)
Economically speaking, California depends on an extremely intricate network of water storage and
delivery systems to supply the state's cities, farms, businesses, and environment with sufficient
water throughout the year. California's water supply infrastructure has made it possible for the state
to grow and prosper. Its highly seasonable precipitation and the fact that annual runoff can vary from
year to year allows the state to move water when and where it is needed (California's Water:
California Water Systems). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The state loses 65% of this precipitation by way of evaporation and transpiration by trees and plant.
The 35% remaining stays in the state's system as runoff. 30% of that which is runoff flows into the
Pacific Ocean or other salty bodies of water. The rest of the runoff is utilized for agricultural
purposes, for urban and environmental purposes (California's Water: California Water Systems).
Around 3/4ths or 75% of California's annual precipitation falls north of the city Sacramento, while
more than 75% of the demand for this water lies south of the capital city. The majority of the rainfall
and snowfall occurs between October and April. These months, when precipitation is at its highest,
are considered Fall and Winter but demand for water is highest during the hottest driest months of
the year which are in the summertime, when precipitation is at its lowest (California's Water:

The Future of California
The future of California is pretty good, for the state is projected to see growth in almost every sector
of the economy as well as the population, but there are many concerns that must be addressed first
in order to see California's growth come to fruition. International trade and business is one of
California's largest industries and it's expected to continue increasing, for many emerging economies
are also located off of the Pacific Ocean. Growth in the economy is good, but requires resources that
California has a limited supply of. The main resource California always needs is water, since most
of the state's population resides in the southern regions, which are arid and receive minimal
precipitation annually. The state is planning on improving efficiency and the aqueduct system to
increase the water supply while decrease the environmental effects California's aqueduct's have on
regions like the San Joaquin River Delta. For many years California has been considered a very
liberal and left state, which is due to the fact that the state has the toughest environmental legislation
in the country. With such strong legislation ensuring the protection of the environment California
has become a model state in the fight against climate change, and must remain vigilant for there are
numerous species endemic to the state that are found nowhere else on the planet. Though there are

Vacations In California
Many people will go on vacations to get away from their own lives and take a break from work,
stress, and giving them time to relax. When someone goes on vacation, they have a lot to plan and
many things to do. Another reason why people go on vacation is for the scenery. Most places people
go to for vacation is something they do not have in their own town or near them, so most of the time
people go to places that are out of their comfort zone. "San Francisco, California tourism reached
record numbers in 2015, welcoming a total of 24.6 million visitors for an increase of 2.7 percent

which was used as a Spanish Military post. Presidio was named Yerba Buena ("Good Herb"). San

The California Dream Is Dead
The California Dream is Dead
The California Dream? More like a California Miracle. James Rawls, writer of the article
"California: A Place, A People, A Dream" is an optimist who believes there is still hope for the
California Dream (Rawls 14). The article was written 1984. It is not applicable to today's self–
destructive California. With the population of over 38 million people, California is barely holding
itself together at this point. Even "investment" in the young Californians' education is too costly for
the government. And with less people pursuing education, this leads to less degrees. Fewer degrees
translates to a lower employment rate. A lower employment rate means a weaker economy.
California is in the midst of a very self–destructive chain that will eventually lead to California's
end. The California Dream is now a California Miracle (Johnson–Ahorlu, Alvarez, and Hurtado 24).
It is too late for attempting to revive the California Dream, as now California is in self–destruction
due to overpopulation and California being unable to support so many people educationally.
"California: A Place, A People, A Dream" by James Rawls is an optimistic article describing
California and its ongoing success despite of its countless setbacks. Rawls claims that it is through
the pursuit of dreams that Californians continuously save California. He also proposes that the
California Dream has now become something more of paradoxes. What particularly stands out is the

California, California The Fresh Water
Introduction The Earth is a huge planet this is covered by 70 percent water. Astonishingly, from the
70 percent of the worlds water the human population can only use 1 percent because the rest of it is
salt water, frozen, or in some way unattainable (Santa Clara Valley Water District, 2016). Humans
have found many different ways to obtain this 1 percent of fresh water they need, but the techniques
vary depending on location. In San Jose, California the fresh water is obtained through 3 major
sources: groundwater, imported surface water, and local mountain surface water. These 3 sources
contribute different amounts of water to the San Jose community but their contribution can vary due
to factors such as weather and global warming. Imported surface water composes about 50 percent
of San Jose's water supply, while ground water composes roughly 40 percent, and local mountain
surface water composes approximately 10 percent (Santa Jose Water Company, 2016).
Groundwater
Groundwater is water that seeps through the ground and gets stored underground. The supply of
groundwater is always changing because it is constantly used and replenished. The groundwater
supply replenishes and grows due to rain and snow melt and can decrease due to things like
droughts and heavy usage. Depending on the type of surface of the ground as much as 20 percent of
the rain and snow melt can seep into the ground or as little as 5 percent (Raymond, 1988). Areas

Drought In California
The Right For Water
Visualize that citizens have to go 5 months without showering, living in filth, not being able to flush
their toilet. Horrible right? Well sorrowfully, for numerous cresidents in California, that is the life
they live. There is currently a 3–year drought in California. Innumerable citizens are compelled to
drive miles and miles away in order to acquire water and bathe, while for farmers, they have been
allowed to use aquifers frequently to grow their crops. We do not have enough water for both the
farmers and citizens to be used oftenly, which has precipitated an outage between the two.
Therefore, the California government is debating on whether to supervise the usage of aquifers. As a
result, I support California enforcing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Scientists are already sounding alarm bells about pumping too much groundwater. State water
managers estimate that water tables in some parts of the Valley have dropped 100 feet below
historical lows. As the water levels sink, the land can sink, too – in some places by about a foot per
year. Groundwater pumping could also put more stress on the San Andreas Fault" (Source 3). After
reading this quote it lets us understand that slowly we are affecting the state. In fact, California is a
tremendous state of agriculture. Therefore, if we establish everything together, we are slowly
affecting furthermore sinking California due to how much the state uses aquifers. As we all know if
there is disturbance among the San Andreas Fault, consequently it can lead to a significant
earthquake. "We are a one–way trajectory towards depletion. Toward running out of groundwater in
the Central Valley," warns Jay Famiglietti, a hydrologist at UC Irvine. He points out that California
is the only western state that doesn't really monitor or supervising how much groundwater farmers
and residents are using"(Source 3). This is another immense reason why we need to administer the
aquifers because eventually at the pace we are going by not monitoring the aquifers, we could
eventually use all the

A Report On California Drought

California Drought Here in the desert we all know it's a very dry place. You may also know that
California is in a drought as well and the dryness of our area has resulted in many continuous
disadvantages. People are conserving water as much as they can but maybe some of you out there
are not doing your part in saving our water and I am here to tell you it is so simple! But first, let me
provide some facts on the drought in California that should help you realize the dire situation we are
in. According to saveourwater.com, 2013 was marked as the driest year on record in many parts of
California including Sacramento and Los Angeles. Water storage in the big reservoirs, ... Show more

In other words, the drought can really affect our economy as well as our social life. The Sierra
Nevada snowpack, which is counted on to provide 30 percent of the state's water supply as it melts
through early summer, is at its second–lowest level on record. According to Hippo Reads, it will
take about 11 trillion gallons of water (42 cubic kilometers) – around 1.5 times the maximum
volume of the largest U.S. reservoir – to recover from California's continuing drought, according to
a new analysis of NASA satellite data.
Now you may be thinking to yourself, "How can California even start to cope with this drought?
How can it go back to normal in a climate that receives little snowpack and rain?" Well although
these issues are complex, there have been some achievements–political and otherwise–toward
developing more resilient water supplies. One way is groundwater legislation: our Governor, Jerry
Brown, signed legislation mandating "sustainable groundwater management," though the law leaves
local entities to define that idea further."We have to learn to manage wisely water, energy, land and
our investments, that 's why this is important," said Governor Brown (CA.gov). Another way our
government is helping is the spending on water projects.
Although the government and other corporations

Fresno, California is listed as number 10 for the highest city in the U.S. running short on water. Over
75 percent of the land is classified as "D4", which since the beginning of 2014 the land is in an
"exceptional drought" in reference to an article by Wall Street, and the city overall is in the second
highest category for an intense drought. Fresno is known for our leading agricultural regions in the
nation, so having water restrictions puts a burden on the town and has affected Fresno by no longer
being California's dominant agricultural producer. We all know California is going through a water
crisis and it has not improved over the past 4 years, but some of us may not realize how much worse
it can get. According to CA.Gov's article, California ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many may not want to think about what could happen if rain doesn't come down and the truth is no
one can confidently answer when or if the drought will ever end. The only solutions we have for
people now is for hopeful rainfall or snow, reducing water use ad rethinking the way we use it.
However the state has been thinking of solutions and it has been said the Pacific Ocean could fix our
drought problem. According to NPR, "workers are building what will be the largest seawater
desalination...it is expected to provide up to 50 million gallons of fresh drinkable water." That
amount of water could help at least 112,000 households in Carlsbad, California. They would use
reverse osmosis on the water, which means they would separate the silt, sand, and organics then
move forward to pressurizing the water before it goes through very thin membranes. It could be an
ideal solution because were not relying on the rainfall or snow packs, although it is a greatly
debatable. Reasons are because it is expensive and could cause harm to sea

Having to live in California definitely has its perks. On Northern California, you have the
astonishing vineyards and the view of how neatly they are laid out, let alone the wonderful redwood
trees or the large tree wayside known for their heights and large trunks that leave you speechless
from the beauty and how beautiful nature is, which also gives you an excelling understanding of
how green Northern California is. Not to mention, the weather in Northern California tends to be on
the cooler side, however certainly not to a freezing point. The city known for acceptance, San
Francisco, is in the Bay Area, just a few miles away from the sea. On the lower side of California is

Let's take it back to how this started, back in 2011 to be exact. Reading the California–Nevada
Climate Applications Program (CNAP) a NOAA Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments
(RISA) program magazine, from an unknown publisher published on August of 2014 a "drought
occurs when water supplies cannot meet demands, and can happen for a variety of reasons" (2). This
being said the cause of the drought today is due to the lack of precipitation and humans creating
global warming, which is only making it worse, and speeding up the drought. Aside from this, there
are other reasons that caused this drought one other being traced back to 2014 where the water vapor
transport split into two branches and resulted in flowing either north or south of California (2)
according to the (CNAP) magazine. In other words, the evaporation from the year of 2014, it strays
from its familiar route across the Pacific. Today, California is relying on other states leading, to
purchase water from nearby states like Nevada. Doesn't it seem embarrassing for California to be
asking other states for water and pay millions of dollars simply on account of the state running

Utah / California
Compare and Contrast
Utah and California have numerous similarities and differences from post Native American
settlement, religious affiliation, to demographic concentrations. Both states are in the western United
States but I believe that there are more obvious differences between the states then similarities
between them. A majority of lower and mid western US states has seen the exploration efforts of the
Spanish, but other then this the settlement efforts of Utah and California have a bigger presence of
distinctions. Utah can be seen being settled by the Latter Day Saints to escape religious persecution
from those in the US east, while California rather than religion experienced immigration and

Hyperpluralism In California
A theory explains and can predict something. There are several theories that try to explain who
governs California and why. Of the several theories included in California politics, there is the
democratic theory, elite theory, pluralist theory, and hyperpluralism. Of these four theories, most
tend to be influenced by one theory as each as their own beliefs to better explain how politics works.
Hyperpluralism seems to do a better job at explaining the politics of California when compared to
the others. The democratic theory believes that everyone governs and has the most influence on
politics in California. According to the democratic theory, voters have their own power to decide
what laws to approve or disapprove by the state legislature. They also have the power to choose
their own legislation, as well as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those two classes are the ones who rule and the second is the rest who do not rule. According to the
text, "Government is always government by the few, whether in the name of the few, the one, or the
many" (13). Those who make up the elites are generally the wealthier population. The Big Four is an
example of elites who used their political power to control those who do not have their own power.
The Big Four helped contribute to California's land development and growth.
In contrast, hyperpluralism is a theory that explains politics in a more relatable way. No one governs
instead power is "thinly scattered". Lawrence states how "the exercise of political power has become
a highly competitive tug–of–war between institutions, policymakers, political parties, numerous
interest groups, and voters" (14). There are ample amounts of evidence in California politics. There
are several components that contribute to this evidence such as individualism in political life,
growing diversity of group interests, and a change in the "nature of majoritarian

Originally California was not well known. One of the first mass migrations to California was the
Gold Rush. During the Gold rush many people from all around the world and within the states itself
rushed to California in hopes of finding gold and making a fortune. The gold rush also allowed
California to become more ethnically diverse due to the migration to California. Today California is
known to be one of the most ethnically diverse state in the US.
After the gold rush, transportation improvements were being made, immigration was going up and
so was mining. The 49's were the first people to reach the mines, although this was not good news,
the 49'rs did increase the immigration to California which led to Diversity also had an impact since
people from all over the East were beginning to move West. The rising of mining began the idea of
creating a bank system which became very successful. Today California's transportation, traveling,

California is suspected of experiencing a killer quake, one that reaches the magnitude of 7.5.
However, it is impossible to predict an earthquake. The Puente Hills Fault is one of the most
dangerous "sleeping monsters" (if it were to) create an earthquake. It is located in the Los Angeles
basin, where it can cause approximately 45 seconds of rippling instead of just 7 seconds because it is
on softer ground, cause thousands of deaths, and potentially destroy the city of Los Angeles. The
first "big one" that hit California was in San Francisco by the San Andreas Fault. This earthquake

Political Parties In California
Weak Parties, Strong Partisanship California is known for being a very liberal "blue" state.
California is almost guaranteed to vote democratically in a presidential election and much of the
country considers themselves democratic. The areas that are more conservative in California are also
very adamant in their beliefs. The two major political parties in California are extremely polarized
and have extremely high partisanship. The parties themselves however are extremely weak. The idea
that parties can have high levels of partisanship but be weak is extremely confusing. It has much to
do with the way California's politics have been established and the level of direct democracy in the
state. Naturally, political parties tend to be distinct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most local elections in California are nonpartisan. A nonpartisan election is an election in which the
parties of the candidates are not printed on the ballots. Although the candidates may identify with
one of the political parties, their preference is not shown on the ballot during the election. This
causes candidates to have to work harder for their votes and make their agendas known to the public
rather than relying on their political party to get them elected. In order for politicians to move up in
the political ladder, they must have contributed greatly to their local office and have a decent resume
to get them through. In a partisan election, candidates may be able to rely on his or her partisanship
to get them elected. For example in a largely democratic area, a candidate may simply be elected
just because his name is next to the word democrat on the ballot. This in turn strengthens the parties
role because that candidate would owe the party for his or her election. Since California holds
nonpartisan elections, candidates owe nothing to the party for their success during an election. They
are able to move up in politics based on the impact they had made during their previous role.
Although a large amount of the state offices has partisan elections, by the time a candidate has made
it to a state election they have made a name for themselves without relying on the party to speak for
them. Therefore, even

  • 3. California Drought "California's water future is increasingly uncertain," says Heather Cooley, in her article California Needs Better Water Management and Pricing Policies (Source A). Agriculture uses 80 percent of California's constrained water supply and proves to be the primary source of California's drought. There has been no permanent and largely successful conservation effort to save water. However, with a reformed water management and conservation system, California's largest industry, agriculture, can thrive while saving water at the same time. In Stop Water Abuse by the Almond and Pistachio Empire by Wenonah Hauter (Source C), Hauter suggests that restrictions on irrigation should be made in arid areas of California. • 5. California Drought : California And Alaska California Drought California is the state located in southwest of the North America and is the third largest state beside Texas and Alaska. California is well known for its sunny and friendly weather. Other than that, abundant job opportunities, great education, and rich culture draw many resettlers not only Americans moving from other states, but also immigrants resettling here from all over the world. Large population will certainly increase the demand of water and food to fulfill the basic human needs. Yet one fact shows that the total urban water usage in California only accounts for roughly ten percent. Food actually requires more water to produce than the urban uses. Agriculture in California plays an huge role as producer and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of letting the drought conditions become worse, both agricultural practice and personal habits have to be changed. Only understanding how to use water efficiently as well as how to conserve water effectively are the only ways to survive from water crisis. This is a challenge for every Californian, agricultural provider and the state governor. Before finding solutions for the drought trends, knowing where California get its water supply is essential. Colorado River system provides an important source of water for Southern California and supports Los Angeles and San Diego County, where dwell the most population in the south. The reliable water resource lessen the current water stress and drought problems as well as given enough water for domestic use . However, water supply from the Colorado river can only be considered as a short–term solution in terms of drought. Expanding urban area and growing population in Southern California increase the demand of water, and on top of that California is not the only thirsty state that shares water supply from the same river system. Michael Wines emphasises that These new realities are forcing a profound reassessment of how the 1,450–mile Colorado, the Southwest's only major river, can continue to slake the thirst of one of the nation's fastest–growing regions. Agriculture, from California's Imperial Valley to Wyoming's cattle herds, soaks up about three–quarters of its water, and produces 15 percent of the nation's food. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Issue Of Simmering California Simmering California In a recent survey by the University of Southern California nearly 75 percent of voter state that "relations between people of different races were "good" or "excellent" in their own neighborhoods" (Abrams). Yet these same participants agree that black men and woman face more discrimination than any other race. Though racial discrimination in California has mitigated considerably over the years it is still a major problem. The peak of racial tensions occurred early on in California's past. The Gold rush was a difficult time for immigrants in California. Many came in search of prosperity and instead found a place full of rules and regulations specifically designed to place them at a disadvantage. The many Chinese immigrants arriving at this time faced extreme racism. insert lisa see quote here Many Chinese miners had to pay unbelievable foreign mining taxes on top of having to mine mostly in abandoned mining grounds. To make ends meet they took on jobs as cooks, launders, and other jobs. They were paid low wages and had to face discriminatory hiring practices. The sudden flood of people caused tensions between the natives and the miners to rise. Miners were invading and destroying native lands. Out of desperation, the Native Americans began pillaging mining camps for supplies. Incensed by the raids, miners began to hunt down the indigenous population and were often time supported by the government. The situation never really improved since then. In ... • 9. California Drought In accordance with Adam Nagourney and Jack Healy's New York Times article, " Drought Frames Economic Divide of Californians," it is believed that the residents of California are economically divided which determines the amount of water they consume. In the two cities of comparison, Cowan Heights and Compton, consumption of water has a lot to do with the residents financial background. The daily water consumption rate for the residents of Cowan Heights, whose household median income is $122,662, was 572.4 gallons per person. The daily water consumption rate for the residents of Compton, whose household median income is $42,953, was 63.6 gallons per person. Due to the drought, Governor Jerry Bown of Californina, ordered a statewide twenty– five percent cut in urban water consumption. This statewide water consumption cut will result in, "forcing the state's biggest water users, which include some of the wealthiest communities, to bear the brunt." The water consumption for the residents of Cowan Heights is higher than the residents of Compton because they can afford it. Stephanie Pincetl, the director of the California Center for Sustainable Communities at the University of California, Los Angeles, states, "They have bigger properties. They are less price sensitive. So if you can afford it, you use it." The attitudes toward water consumption are different between the residents of the two cities. One resident of Compton, Alysia Thomas, stated, "she tells her children to skip a bath on days when they do not play outside; that holds down the water bill." Although both cities have different attitudes; they both have to face the same circumstances if they do not cut back on water consumption. • 11. California Water Rights Water resources in the state of California have deteriorated drastically as a result of the current drought event in the west coast of the United States. This has resulted in insufficient supplies of water to residents of southern California, as well as the devastation of wildlife and aquatic ecosystems that are characteristic of this area. This policy analysis will provide the context of the issue, as well as possible solutions, followed by a proposed policy plan to reach the policy goal of equitable and reliable water allocation in the state of California, drought resilience, as well as restoration of the destroyed ecosystems. Water was still in short supply, and the US Bureau of Reclamation was established in 1902 in order to manage water resources in the area. During this period, water from the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range was used extensively for residential, as well as commercial and industrial, uses including gold mining. This was also the time during which the first water market arose – as a system to sell water to gold miners. However, in 1886, these prior appropriation rights conflicted with the Riparian water rights policies used throughout the rest of the United States. Throughout the rest of the country, Riparian water rights were in effect. Riparian water rights allocates water to those who own land along the path of the waterway. This conflict resulted in a combined policy of both Riparian and Prior Appropriation rights within the state (USCD Center for Environmental Economics). Southern California perhaps has seen the most conflict over water than the rest of the United States. In 2015, there was a 2.7 billion revenue loss from agriculture industries in California and 10,100 job losses (Howitt, 2). Archeological evidence shows that prehistoric populations in the western region of the United States such as the Chumash dealt with the medieval climate anomaly or also known as "Little Ice Age" (Fagan, 14). • 17. The California Earthquake California Earthquakes California's unique geography as a state makes it a very appealing place to call home. From the odd east to west transverse San Gabriel mountain ranges of the Los Angeles Basin, to the bumpy coastal ranges of the Bay Area, any person can find a compatible topographic terrain to their liking. California may seem to be the perfect place to live with its ideal climate and extensive geographic features. However, due to California's location over the shifting continental plates, coupled with its enormous and also multiple faults, at any time this great state can fall victim to a seismic disaster. After examining evidence from both Rong–Gong Lin's II Los Angeles Times article of April 18, 2016 and the NOVA videos Killer Quake ( 2006), Earthquake (2007), as well as Geologic Journey II – Episode 3 (The Pacific Rim: Americas) – Part 3 (San Francisco) and The Great San Francisco Earthquake (American Experience ~ 2005), one can take a comparative account of the three major earthquakes of California's past. Although each earthquake was very devastating on is own; the Great Quake 0f 1906, the Loma Prieta quake of 1989, and the NorthRidge quake of 1994 each amounted to an extensive forfeiture of property and life. Each of these earthquakes created much suffering and loss. • 19. Drought In California 3–27–17 Water Issues California was in a massive drought just this past year which became known as a state emergency. Many homeowners and ranchers pumps went dry because California was deprived of water. Many farmers had to drill there wells deeper to reach the water table, so they could keep their crops alive. However, the homeowners who didn't have the money to drill another well, had to go to their local Fire station or water supply to get their own water in a tank. Just this past winter California was hit with a lot of rain and they didn't seem ready for it, therefore California should have acted upon the issues prior to the wet winter such as more dams, water reservoirs, functioning dams, or simply have pumps to push water underground to store it. ... "Oroville had an infrastructure failure which caused a sinkhole due to all the water being released" said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist from UCLA(E&E News). This wouldn't have happened if California would have put money towards this to fix it instead of using it on a train. Considering the Oroville dam was shut down due to the infrastructure failure, the water went down the access dam which is all dirt. • 21. Education In California California's Master Plan for Higher Education was signed by Governor Pat Brown, and officially passed the law in 1960. Once established by California State into State legislature, it was a commitment from the state to develop the best higher education system for all educators especially the tuition will be free and every educator can have access to higher education. In 1950, there were only two institutions that offered higher education. Large population of students with less space in classroom size placed lots of college students automatically in waiting lists. As a result, the rate of graduation was declining. Therefore, each and every region in California started to construct more advanced institutions along with enlarge size of classrooms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cutting the state budget on education generate financial crisis for lots of learner to keep focusing on advanced education. The high cost of University education not only threatens them to own huge amount of students' debt but also dropping out of higher education system. Today, it is very obvious matter between the increasing rates of college dropout with the increasing rate of crime in California. According to Harry Johnson, a Senior Fellow at ICF International in Washington, DC pointed out that "School failures and exclusion predict poor life outcome and are implicated in the mass incarceration of boys and young men of colors" (Wilson 49). The purpose of education is to develop individual skill in intellectual, cultural, personal traits and so on. Since the state fail to offer students with education, most of the illiterate couldn't provide for the daily ends meet. So, they became homeless and some even committing several crimes to put the food on the tables, the shelter over their heads. Educational attainment may affect subsequent criminal decisions. Millions of people who migrate to big cities have difficulties in finding a well–paid job and meeting their needs. Moreover they may be deprived of receiving a good education. Because of this, they are obligated to resort to illegal ways in order to afford their expenses. Eventually, lack of education constitutes a threat to society in country. It plays a leading role in increasing crime rates. In the other word, it is vital governments should determine and take initiative to invest their money for education by offering financial aid or California grants for college students. • 23. Essay On California I think I am slightly confused by the statement, "the authors of your text make an argument that California should stand as a separate region of the United States and Canada." Does that mean as its own region in the book or as its own self–governed country within the continent of North America? I believe there has been some talk in the media about the idea that California could try to secede from the US. I think if any state could conceivably stand as its own country, California would definitely be in the running, due to the fact that it seems to have a little bit of everything encompassed in over 163,000 square miles. Obviously, there are mountains throughout the state, but in terms of vegetation it ranges from coniferous forest type trees ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am not sure where exactly the dividing line should be drawn, simply that it seems silly to try and create a region out of an area that clearly fits in all three diverse regions. I think that even if they were unable to strike it rich, just the possibility of the hope, the dream that it could happen was enough to prompt a large influx of people into the state throughout the 1800's. In modern times, I think the perceived mystique of Hollywood and Disney continue to be a huge draw for the American public. The Pacific Northwest is distinctive due to the fact that many areas are isolated from the rest of the North America by land and are only accessible by air or water (Hardwick, Shelley & Holtgrieve.) • 25. California Water Infrastructure Infrastructure of California's Water supply System: . "California is home to one of the most extensive water supply systems in the nation." The state's water supply system consist of over 1,000 reservoirs, hundreds of groundwater basins and many local and regional water conveyance systems. It is a system that is quite remarkably engineered to say the least (California's Water: California Water Systems) Economically speaking, California depends on an extremely intricate network of water storage and delivery systems to supply the state's cities, farms, businesses, and environment with sufficient water throughout the year. California's water supply infrastructure has made it possible for the state to grow and prosper. Around 3/4ths or 75% of California's annual precipitation falls north of the city Sacramento, while more than 75% of the demand for this water lies south of the capital city. The majority of the rainfall and snowfall occurs between October and April. • 27. The Future of California The future of California is pretty good, for the state is projected to see growth in almost every sector of the economy as well as the population, but there are many concerns that must be addressed first in order to see California's growth come to fruition. International trade and business is one of California's largest industries and it's expected to continue increasing, for many emerging economies are also located off of the Pacific Ocean. Growth in the economy is good, but requires resources that California has a limited supply of. The main resource California always needs is water, since most of the state's population resides in the southern regions, which are arid and receive minimal precipitation annually. The state is planning on improving efficiency and the aqueduct system to increase the water supply while decrease the environmental effects California's aqueduct's have on regions like the San Joaquin River Delta. For many years California has been considered a very liberal and left state, which is due to the fact that the state has the toughest environmental legislation in the country. With such strong legislation ensuring the protection of the environment California has become a model state in the fight against climate change, and must remain vigilant for there are numerous species endemic to the state that are found nowhere else on the planet. That even though they banned the use of the term redskins as a team name and the term itself is not being used for its literal meaning or as an insult it is still an inappropriate word. I find California's band appropriate and a good step forward to eliminating insulting terms involving race or medical condition. They are also setting a good example for other states and the young people of California. The American native corporations are also happy for the support they need. Temecula, California, a Large city in the southwestern region of the state, is known for skating, wineries, and shopping. Temecula also has a lot of historical sites to visit. This would be an educational and fun trip. There is many historical sites in Temecula, California for instance Old Town Temecula, Peltzer farm, Temecula berry company, and Old Town Temecula jail you know the little things that Temecula is known for. These sites are all small individual historic structures, but they're what makes up Temecula. Temecula is a large city of 106,780 people. That is a lot bigger than what I am use to, Ste.Genevieve, Missouri there is only 4,405 people. That is not a lot compared to Temecula California. This city has been around since 1859. Going to Temecula, California would not only be an amazing vacation, but it is an opportunity to try new things and to learn new things as well. Old Town Temecula is going to blow your mind. When someone goes on vacation, they have a lot to plan and many things to do. Another reason why people go on vacation is for the scenery. Most places people go to for vacation is something they do not have in their own town or near them, so most of the time people go to places that are out of their comfort zone. • 35. The California Dream Is Dead The California Dream is Dead The California Dream? More like a California Miracle. James Rawls, writer of the article "California: A Place, A People, A Dream" is an optimist who believes there is still hope for the California Dream (Rawls 14). The article was written 1984. It is not applicable to today's self– destructive California. With the population of over 38 million people, California is barely holding itself together at this point. Even "investment" in the young Californians' education is too costly for the government. And with less people pursuing education, this leads to less degrees. Fewer degrees translates to a lower employment rate. A lower employment rate means a weaker economy. California is in the midst of a very self–destructive chain that will eventually lead to California's end. The California Dream is now a California Miracle (Johnson–Ahorlu, Alvarez, and Hurtado 24). It is too late for attempting to revive the California Dream, as now California is in self–destruction due to overpopulation and California being unable to support so many people educationally. "California: A Place, A People, A Dream" by James Rawls is an optimistic article describing California and its ongoing success despite of its countless setbacks. Rawls claims that it is through the pursuit of dreams that Californians continuously save California. He also proposes that the California Dream has now become something more of paradoxes. For months afterwards, I felt that every time I sat down, I should have to put on a seatbelt." Earthquakes are when tectonic plates slip past each other causing a "snap'. The ground shakes violently and can even crack. Though the occurrence of an earthquake is dreadful, familiarizing yourself with the causes and effects can be useful, and in turn make it less scary. • 41. California, California The Fresh Water Introduction The Earth is a huge planet this is covered by 70 percent water. Astonishingly, from the 70 percent of the worlds water the human population can only use 1 percent because the rest of it is salt water, frozen, or in some way unattainable (Santa Clara Valley Water District, 2016). Humans have found many different ways to obtain this 1 percent of fresh water they need, but the techniques vary depending on location. In San Jose, California the fresh water is obtained through 3 major sources: groundwater, imported surface water, and local mountain surface water. These 3 sources contribute different amounts of water to the San Jose community but their contribution can vary due to factors such as weather and global warming. Imported surface water composes about 50 percent of San Jose's water supply, while ground water composes roughly 40 percent, and local mountain surface water composes approximately 10 percent (Santa Jose Water Company, 2016). Groundwater Groundwater is water that seeps through the ground and gets stored underground. The supply of groundwater is always changing because it is constantly used and replenished. The groundwater supply replenishes and grows due to rain and snow melt and can decrease due to things like droughts and heavy usage. Depending on the type of surface of the ground as much as 20 percent of the rain and snow melt can seep into the ground or as little as 5 percent (Raymond, 1988). Well sorrowfully, for numerous cresidents in California, that is the life they live. There is currently a 3–year drought in California. Innumerable citizens are compelled to drive miles and miles away in order to acquire water and bathe, while for farmers, they have been allowed to use aquifers frequently to grow their crops. The Sierra Nevada snowpack, which is counted on to provide 30 percent of the state's water supply as it melts through early summer, is at its second–lowest level on record. According to Hippo Reads, it will take about 11 trillion gallons of water (42 cubic kilometers) – around 1.5 times the maximum volume of the largest U.S. reservoir – to recover from California's continuing drought, according to a new analysis of NASA satellite data. Now you may be thinking to yourself, "How can California even start to cope with this drought? How can it go back to normal in a climate that receives little snowpack and rain?" Well although these issues are complex, there have been some achievements–political and otherwise–toward developing more resilient water supplies. One way is groundwater legislation: our Governor, Jerry Brown, signed legislation mandating "sustainable groundwater management," though the law leaves local entities to define that idea further."We have to learn to manage wisely water, energy, land and our investments, that 's why this is important," said Governor Brown (CA.gov).
