In his Meditations, Rene Descartes attempts to uncover certain truths about existence. In his Third Meditation, he establishes his "special causal
principle" (SCP). Descartes uses this principle to explore the origin of ideas, and to prove the existence of God. I agree that there is much logic to be
found in the SCP, but I disagree withDescartes method of proving God's existence, and in this essay I will explain why. I will begin by explaining the

Newton's laws of motion dictate that an object remains inert unless it is acted upon by some force. It follows that the effect of that force cannot be
greater than the force itself. For example, a boy scout cannot derive more heat from a campfire than the actual temperature of the fire itself. As far as
physical objects go, Descartes is making a completely logical argument.
At this point, we must remember that Descartes' is still dealing with the metaphysical. He has yet to prove that anything in the physical world
exists. Descartes avoids this trap by formulating that the SCP not only applies to physical objects, but also to ideas. By applying the SCP to his
ideas (which exist metaphysically), Descartes is providing himself with his sole criteria to judge between true existence and existence that is merely
perceived. In order to show that ideas are subject to the SCP, Descartes points out a difference between formal and objective reality. Objective reality
is the reality presented in a picture or idea, whereas formal reality exists in the object of the picture or the idea. Objective reality is reflectional whereas
formal reality is actual. There cannot be more objective reality than actual reality, otherwise the surplus reality must derive from nothing, which is

Christian spiritual writings are texts that help us connect to our spirituality and they also hold various themes or messages. Some recurring themes that
have been uncovered from a number of texts are; meditation, silence, connecting to God and spirituality. Two themes that are fundamental are silence
and meditation. In meditation we find silence difficult but this is a factor that we need to work on because it is very important. A hypothesis has been
created that will assist in critiquing and evaluating four Spiritual Writings in their attempt to finding the mystery of God. Contemporary Christian
spirituality writings suggest that deep meditation and silence are fundamental to us in order to search for the mystery of God. The next four paragraphs
will talk about for authors and the articles they have created. These articles will be evaluated on their attempt to explain that silence and meditation,
help us search for the mystery of God. The four authors that will be critiqued are Laurence Freeman, Cynthia Bourgeaults, John Main and Richard Rohr.
The first resource was created by Laurence Freeman. He has created 2 articles that talk about the Silence of the Soul and The First Sight: The

Cataphatic Vs Apatic Meditation Essay
Mediation is a mental exercise used to reach a heightened level of spiritual and mental awareness thru repeating one's mantra and breath. Although the
practice sounds simple in itself and doesn't sound like there would be much room for an expansion and growth as a practice. It has still managed to
grow into an umbrella term with a rich history and a verity of different meditation that people practice some even date back before the Buddhist monks
in early 2500 B.C. People have been practicing meditation for years from the Catholic monasteries, to the Desert Father, and throughout Asia and the
Buddhist. However the branches of meditation that I will be capitalizing on is found mainly in the Christian traditions of meditation and prayer which
can be categorized as two major classifications called Apophatic and Kataphatic (also known as Cataphatic) meditation. These two branches of
meditation are the broadest and can be seen as the two most basic form of meditation, and with a proper understanding of them you can learn to
navigate this broad practice of meditation and find a form that best fits you.

There are many kinds of kapathatic mediation some common ones are centering prayer, cosmic, mindfulness meditation and etc. All these meditations

After proving that God exists in the Third Meditation, Rene Descartes has now come to the problem that if God exists, then why did he create

This quote from the first meditation with conjunction with the previous one in the previous paragraph shows a connection between earlier
meditations and how there is still some uncertainty in Descartes claim. It is questioning God's very existence and Descartes finds himself having to
reiterate that God does exist in the fourth meditation with thoughts like these. " God is immense, incomprehensible, and infinite..."(Descartes 547), "

rest of us but something far out of reach something that compare to the universe. Through examples like these and reiteration Descartes attempts to

Five Points of Yoga For this assignment, I thought I would be helpful for me to know about five points of yoga. Swami Vishnudevananda who was
born in South India came up with five essential principles of doing yoga. The five points of yoga focused on mental, spiritual, and physical health:
proper exercise, proper breathing, proper relaxation, proper diet, and positive thinking and meditation. I think it is important to remind myself about
these five points of yoga when starting a new day. The proper exercise is simply moving our body. If we do not provide natural movement to our
body then a great discomfort will ensue in a mean time. Proper exercise should not make practitioner unpleased, but it has to make practitioner
pleasant and it has to be beneficial to one's body. Yoga exercises are not only for the body, but also a gateway to widen mental and spiritual
condition. Asanas is a yogic physical exercise, which means stable pose. It focuses on the flexibility of the body and the health of the spine. The
exercise also affects organs, glands and hormones. Most often times, sun salutation is practice before the Asanas. Proper breathing and controlling

These characteristics cannot exists by themselves and are thus subject to the existence of things in the next highest degree of reality, that of
substances. Substances are finite objects or ideas with conceivable limits. In the previous example, the ceiling itself is the substance with the holes
and markings (of a lower degree of reality) being dependent upon it for their continued existence. The highest degree of reality involves the infinite.
The infinite represents substances that are unbounded and possess no conceivable or tangible limits in any of their aspects or qualities. The only

In the Third Meditation of Discourse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy by Rene Descartes, Descartes gives a proof for the existence of
God. Descartes starts out by stating his general rule that everything he can clearly and distinctly perceives must be true. However, Descartes stated in
the First Meditation that he can doubt things that are clear and distinct to him on the basis that he is being deceived by God. In order to prove his rule
to be true, he needs to prove the existence of God and that he is not a deceiver (Descartes 70–71). Descartes first establishes that everything that exists,
and has reality, has a cause. Everything is put into existence by something else. Ideas have objective reality which is what an idea is an idea about and
all ideas differ in their objective reality. For example, the idea of a supreme deity has more objective reality than something that is finite. This is
because something that is infinite is more real than something that is finite. Because ideas have objective reality, that means that they must have a
cause (Descartes 72–73). Next, Descartes says, "it is evident by the light of nature that there must be at least as much [reality] in the efficient and
total cause as there is in the effect of that same cause." (Descartes 73). Here Descartes is basically saying that it is evident that there must be as
much reality in the cause of something as there is in the effect. For instance, there must be as much cause in a child as there is in the parents.
Descartes now establishes that premise for ideas. He says that there must be at least as much formal reality in the cause of the idea as the idea has
objective reality, and he clearly has an idea of God. Therefore, the cause of the idea of God must have at least as much formal reality as the idea has
objective reality (Descartes 74–75). Descartes now establishes that the objective reality of the idea of God is infinite. This is because God is an
infinite being. Because the cause of the idea of God must have at least as much formal reality as the idea has objective reality, the cause must have

In his Third Meditation, he establishes his "special causal principle" (SCP). Descartes uses this principle to explore the origin of ideas, and to prove the existence of God. I agree that there is much logic to be found in the SCP, but I disagree withDescartes method of proving God's existence, and in this essay I will explain why. I will begin by explaining the SCP, and will then demonstrate how Descartes applies thisprinciple to prove that God exists. For example, a boy scout cannot derive more heat from a campfire than the actual temperature of the fire itself. As far as physical objects go, Descartes is making a completely logical argument.
