Rudimental magazine advert essay
1. Technical/ audio codes-
Characters- There are no characters inthisCD advert.
There are onlypeople thatare paintedonthe wall. The
characters that are graffiti onthe wall are all imagesof
people dressedupincostumessuchas a skeletonface.
Amongthese people dressedasskeletonsthere are
normal people playinginstrument’saroundthem.This
image looksasthoughtheyare some sort of streetparty
or carnival.The skeletonfacescouldbe usedtoshowthe
sadnessof the people whoare noplayinginstrumentsand
whoare not enjoyingthe music.Thiscouldgive
connotations thatif youdo not listentoRudimental’s
musicyouwill notbe happy yourself. Thiscouldbe seen
as a reasonas to why people wanttobuytheirmusic.
Narrative events- The narrative eventsof thisadvertis
that the wall hasbeengratifiedon.Thisisa formof anti
social behaviourbutitmay be seenasa good thing.Thisis
due to it standingoutina boringstreetand looking
interestingandmakesthe mise enscene lookalotbetter.
In the graffiti itlooksasthoughit issome sort of street
party/carnival.You can see lotsof people with
instrumentssuchastrumpets.Thiscouldhave relationsto
Rudimental’smusic,oritcouldjustbe usedtoshowhow
musicingeneral can make somethingboringturninto
somethinginterestingandfun.The streetcanbe
recognised bymostpeople livinginthe UK,and as it is
relatable theymayalsoconsiderRudimental’smusictobe
relatable too, andthiscouldbe usedto sell more CD’s. As
well asthiswithinthe image there are skeletonfaces,
withinthe groupof people.These skeletonscouldbe used
to showhowpeople are whentheyare notplayingthe
music.Thiscan also be usedto sell more albums.
Technical/ audio codes- The textused isall
white anda boldfont.Thisis sothat it stands
out againsta color background. The use of
the color white looksgoodaswell due toa
lotof colorbeingusedonthe wall and
therefore,nottakingthe attentionaway
fromthat but still standingoutdue tothe
boldfont. Aswell asthiswhite starsare also
usedto showthe ratingof the albumfrom
differentmagazines.
Iconography- One thing that is iconic of this CD
advert is the image used on the front of it. Due to all
the colours used it makes it look fun and exciting.
This is what the genre of pop music wants to portray
and through this image it makes Rudimentals music
appealing to customers. As well as this another thing
that is iconic is the road that the image is set on. The
road is relatable to most people living in the UK, and
this could be seen as a recognizable figure to the
audience. This could be used to sell more albums as
people can see that the wall on the street livens up a
boring/ normal everyday street, which might make
them think if they buy the album it will do the same
for them.
Mise en scene- Inthe mise enscene there isone wall on
the streetthat standsout fromthe rest of the street. The
settingisona normal streetinthe UK where youcan see
a corner shop,busstop andbig flatblocksinthe
background.The wall onthe streetiscovered with
graffiti,suchaswritingandimages.All the coloursused
throughoutare boldand bright.The imageslooklike
some sort of festival, brigade.Youcansee a lot of people
playinginstrumentssuchastrumpets. The wall contrast
withthe restof the street. The streetlooksdull and
normal where the wall isbrightcolourful andstandsout
reallywell.Itcouldbe toshowwhatrudimental’smusic
can do. For example brightenupadull streetbecause of
the musictheyplay. At the top of the advertthere are
ratingsfromdifferentmagazinesratingthe newalbum.
The ratings are from 4-7 showingthatthe albumhas
beensuccessful.Underneaththe image thereisaquote
saying“The number1 albumoutnow” “The soundtrack
to the summer”thisalsoshowsthat the albumhas been
successful anditisworth people purchasingthe CD.This
isa goodpromotional feature.
