A Comparison Of American Heroes Vs. Greek Tragic Heroes
American Heroes were inspired by Greek Tragic Heroes, yet both are very different from each other,
but American Heroes have very similar traits to those who are Contemporary Heroes. An American
Hero is a person who seeks justice and always defeats the enemy which results in all people having
the justice they deserve. American Heroes also tends to protect all and has the tendency to fall in
love with the " damsel in distress". This type of hero goes about his daily life, just like anyone else
would, until it is time to fight, and at that time, their "supernatural" powers shine through in their
fighting techniques. On the other side, all Tragic Heroes possess a flaw that will change their life
from a life of happiness to a life of pain and despair. Ordinarily, Contemporary Heroes have nearly
the same traits as American Heroes. Contemporary Heroes save and protect many individuals from
violence and harm and lives a normal life until they have to face another obstacle. Both American
and Contemporary Heroes are able to celebrate their victories, while Tragic Heroes can not do so
because they are not victorious. In the movie, Last of the Mohicans, based on the book written by
James Fenimore Cooper, the main character, Nathaniel Bumppo, is a great example of an American
Hero. Nathaniel Bumppo (Hawkeye) is known as the first American Hero. He did not grow up with
a family, but displayed great amounts of courage when fighting. Nathaniel Bumppo fought in order

Greek Heroes Atlanta And Daedalus
Introduction (100 words)
Write a brief paragraph introducing your 4 heroes.
(The text box will expand as you type more text into it.)
I chose the Greek heroes Atlanta and Daedalus to compare with two Modern day Superheroes called
Wonder Woman and Robin. Atlanta was seen as a hero because she was the only girl hunter to stand
equal to the best male hunters. Daedalus was a hero because he was the craftsman who created the
Labyrinth to keep the Minotaur captive. Wonder Woman was seen as a hero because she was seen as
having great leadership skills, Intelligence and Battle strategies. Robin was seen as a hero because
he was the sidekick for the DC Superhero called Batman and together they fought crime.

Using evidence from your template, explain why the Ancient Greeks needed heroes as part of their
daily lives.
Ancient Greeks needed Super Heroes because they represent hope, they are seen as higher models
because of their behaviour. A Lot of younger people look up to them for things that could benefit
them and also adults could look up to them for things that could be useful for them. For them these
things could influence any age group's.
Usually the heros are good people who did good deeds for their people, but sometimes they would

The Heroes Of Ancient Greek Myths
Two Brilliant Heroes in Ancient Greek Myths Who has not heard of heroes in Greek mythology?
They are the role models, inspirations, and protagonists in myths. In ancient times, after a long work
day, the members of the community have little to no energy remaining, but utilize what strength they
have left in a magnificent manner. The citizens meet up, and entertain themselves with myths
regarding heroes, monsters, gods and goddesses. However, the most popular myths revolved around
heroes, and their adventures. In the majority of myths, heroes participate in impossible adventures,
and miraculously, came back with more confidence than they had when they set out. The heroes in
these myths are the ones that everyone loves and appreciates. Two examples of famous heroes are
Hercules and Achilles. They are two well–known heroes that play active roles in myths, and teach
valuable life lessons. The two myths and the role of the heroes in them that are analyzed here are
two fan favourites: the myth of Hercules and Athena, and the myth of Achilles and the
Trojan War. Hercules's adventure begins as soon as he is born. The fact that he is a product of Zeus
and a mortal enrages Hera, Zeus's wife, and Hercules suffers. As a result of this, Hera sends two
snakes to kill him in his crib. The infant Hercules is unusually strong and strangles the snakes before
they can assassinate him. As one can see from is, he is the most superior of all mortals, and stronger

Heroes Gods And Monster Of The Greek Myth Analysis
Wellington Gomez English 9 Ms. Williams November 16, 2015 Heroes, Gods and monster Of the
Greek myth "Poor child. You are being destroyed by your own worth. Your talent had poisoned you
with pride like the sting of a scorpion". That is a quote from the book " Heroes, Gods and Monster
of the Greek Myth" written by Bernard Evslin on page 11. In this book, Evslin shows how the Greek
Gods' react when they feel slighted or disrespected by mortals or anyone else over whom they have
power. When a Greek Gods gets disrespected by a mortal or anyone else they have power over they

According to Dictionary.com, betrayed means to deliver or expose to an enemy by treachery or
disloyalty. The character in the book "Heroes, Gods and Monsters of The Greek Myths" written by
Bernard Evslin was a yellow–haired boy whose name was Phaethon. Phaethon felt deceived by his
friend Epaphus. Phaethon and Epaphus were talking about their father, which are gods. Phaethon
father is Apollo the sun chariot driver, and Epaphus father is Zeus the chief god, king of the
mountains, lord of the sky. Phaethon feels mislead because after he tells Epaphus that he has driven
the sun chariot. Epaphus express to Phaethon " I still don't believe your father lets you drive it. In
fact, I don't believe you've been to the palace of the sun. I doubt that Apollo would know you if he
even saw you" Evslin 65. This is a sign of betrayal because when Epaphus told Phaethon that his
father was Zeus but when Phaethon told Epaphus about his father Apollo Epaphus didn't believe
him. Also, Epaphus doesn't have any proof that Apollo isn't Phaethon father so he should at least
believe it as a friend. The most common feeling when a Greek God is disrespect by a mortal or a
God whom they have power over is betrayal, angry, and jealousy. How the Greek Gods feel when
disrespected is the same way people feel when they are disrespected. When we feel that we are not
given the respect we

Arrogance In Heroes, Gods, And Monsters Of The Greek Myth
The definition of arrogance is overbearing pride. I see arrogance almost everywhere I go: the store,
church, school, and on the street. Arrogance could be disguised as self reliance, but you need to be
able to know when you need help, and be able to accept it. Those who do not accept help and are too
arrogant, which is a sin. Many of the Greek myths, some of my family members, and myself
sometimes have arrogance. Almost every Greek myth in Heroes, Gods, and Monsters of the Greek
Myths has arrogance as a sin. The story of Phaethon reminded me the most of arrogance as a sin.
Phaethon was a son of Apollo and he was talking to the son of Zeus, who didn't believe that he was
the son of Apollo. Phaethon out of arrogance, told the son of

Diary Of Anne Frank Heroism
Think about being trapped in an attic for two years. Not being able to go outside, limited amount of
food, never being able to get away from each other. This is what the Frank family,VanDaan
family, and Dussel had to deal with in the Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert
Hackett. Heroism can be defined in many ways but in order to be a hero in this situation you need to
be brave, courageous, bold and fearless. There are a lot of characters who show heroism. The ones
that were the most heroic were Mrs. Frank, Mr. Frank and Anne they all showed boldness, courage,
and bravery. They made the horrible experience a lot better.
Being bold is a very strong act of heroism.Anne shows this on page 67 when she says "and know

Frank who shows courage. One example is on page 105 "Were all hungry! I see the children getting
thinner and thinner. Your own son Peter...I've heard him moan in his sleep,he's so hungry. And you
come in the night and steal food that should go to them....to the children" Mrs. Frank says this when
she found out the Mr. VanDaan had been stealing food and stood up for the children and kicked Mr.
VanDaan out. This risked Mr. VanDaan telling where they are hiding but Mrs.Frank had the courage
to say this because she cares for others tremendously. Another example is when Mrs.Frank says
"you shouldn't... you should have at least one day to yourself(talking to Miep)" page 54 Miep had
been working alot and Mrs. Frank had courage to say something about it because she knew it was
right and she knew that Miep deserved it. On page 106 Mrs. Frank says "Don't think I haven't seen
you! Always saving the choicest bits for him! I've watched you day after day and I've held my
tongue. But not any longer! Not after this! Now i want him to go! I want him to get out of here. Mrs.
Frank says this to Mrs. VanDaan because she is flustered that Mrs. VanDaan is supporting Mr.
VanDaan over the children. Mrs. Frank realizes that Mrs. VanDaan has been helping Mr. VanDaan
steal food and therefore kicks both of them out. Mrs. Frank shows tons of heroic acts that help them

Conception and Birth of Heroes in Greek Mythology Essay
Hero, the word strikes a universal chord making us think of exceptional and spectacular stories or
deeds that far surpass any common feat. To the Greeks and many other cultures, the birth of these
heroes is important. The birth of a hero sets them, apart often even before birth, from common
mortals in Greek mythology. Birth is the first of many major events in our lives, our entrance into
the world (Leeming). For heroes, that entrance must be as special as their lives will prove to be. A
mundane birth is simply not an option for a hero, whether by the machinations of the gods or
prophecies from an oracle, even the events surrounding their conception must be spectacular. From
Perseus and Danaë to Theseus and Aethra, the myths ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Theseus, born of Aethra and Poseidon, grew up secretly in Troezen keeping him protected from
those who would harm him. Thus, claiming the items his father left him and setting out for Athens,
he started on the path leading to many great and heroic adventures. Hercules, born of Alcmena and
Zeus, was conceived when Zeus took the form of Alcmena's husband and lay with her. Her true
husband lay with her again later that night and she conceived twins. One would be born to her
human husband, and the other fathered by Zeus himself (Hamilton). Zeus bragged about his soon to
be born son alerting and infuriating Hera to Hercules existence. Hera was notorious for tormenting
her husbands' illegitimate offspring since she couldn't harm Zeus outright for his infidelity
(Hamilton). Hera persuaded Eileithyia to slow Alcmena's labor in a fit of piqué, almost killing her
(Hamilton). Alcmena in fear of Hera's wrath gave her son to nature. Zeus (in some accounts
Hermes) stole him away to Olympus, where he suckled at Hera's breast while she lay sleeping,
granting him immortality (McLeish). When Hera awoke during the suckling she pushed Hercules
away and the milk that sprayed out formed the Milky Way (Leeming). Zeus took the infant and
placed him back in his crib before departing to Olympus again. Enraged Hera sent two massive
serpents to kill Hercules and his brother as they lay sleeping

Examples Of Greek Heroes In The Odyssey
Greek Hero or Ordinary Mortal? Throughout all of the Greek mythology and texts that I have read,
each story contains one or more heroes. A hero is a person who is selfless and somehow gets all of
the attention in a story because he or she causes some sort of change. There is always someone who
gains leadership qualities throughout the story and ends of saving the rest of the people. One
particular person who stood out to me was Odysseus. Odysseus was an ordinary person who
eventually accomplished a huge task. He ruled Ithaca with his wife, Penelope, and throughout the
story, he tried to get back to Ithaca after the Trojan War and return to his position as king.
Throughout the Odyssey, there are multiple instances in which Odysseus can be seen ... Show more

He gains the trust of his people and he fights for his country. He helps his men out of deadly
situations and he is willing to what it takes to set them free. He goes on a journey knowing that he
could die, but he does it for his people. He is considered a hero because he encountered so many bad
situations on his journey, but he eventually came out on top. However, I do not believe that
Odysseus is a hero. Odysseus was a mere mortal with the same flaws as everyone else. Although he
came back to his wife, I still believe that he let her down. If she was able to wait twenty years
without having an affair with someone else, then he should be able to as well. I believe that
Odysseus was a hero to so many people, but I do not believe that he was a hero to his wife. He was
not faithful to her, and in my eyes, she should not have taken him back. Without this one flaw,
however, I believe that Odysseus could have been the most heroic character in all of the Greek texts
that I have ever

Heroes In Greek Myth
Heroes play a significant part in Greek myths as well as Roman. The Greeks have the greatest
amount of hero myths, it is thought to be because not all myths have such great impression on
human capability (Allan, 7). In the Hellenistic trait where adding to the accomplishments and
outstanding aspects of mortals are viewed as advantages given by the given by the distant gods by
other cultures (Allan, 7). The Greeks view things as realists. This means that they look at things,
comprehend, and believe them as they really appear. They understand that due to the hero's good
deeds they were no longer protected and now exposed to risks of divine disfavor, occasional defeat,
and the inescapable physical decline of old age (Allan, 7). The Romans took

Greek Heroes: Indiana Jones Vs. Hercules
Indiana Jones vs Hercules The ideas that make up the characteristics of a hero all derived from
Greek classic myths. Stories of men conquering their fears and slaying monsters have been passed
through generations. The changes of society make the plot differ from decade to decade, but the
main features of a hero stay the same. Although some heroes fall short, Greek heroes set a standard
for modern heroes of todays' world. A hero has always been a staple in Greek and modern myths.
Whether he or she has special superpowers or uses their own cleverness, they're someone the
ordinary man can look up to and admire. Indiana Jones is one of today's most popular heroes
because he is an ordinary man whose adventures always lead him into situations where he faces
unimaginable challenges and terrifying foes. Using only his bravery and knowledge of archaeology
he manages to succeed time and time again. Indiana Jones fits into the mold of a well–known

Rupi Kaur As A Hero Essay
People paint heroes in colors and words seemingly out of nowhere; however, these heroes are real in
their own way. They may not have the superpowers, if they do have them, as described and shown,
but there are qualities that were admired enough for them to be created. Heroes are very much real,
not just something in a book. They are also human with human designs and faults. This makes them
likable because not everyone is perfect and heroes acknowledge that themselves, no matter how
much they are idolized. Examples of heroes are your parents, other relatives, people in the military,
firefighters, policemen, musicians, characters, and authors. They are everywhere in your daily life if
you just look around, real or not. Such as author Rupi Kaur and character Gabi Hernandez. Rupi

and emigrated to Canada with her family at the age of four. She has said that ever since she was
young, she loved painting and writing because it was the way her mother encouraged her when she

Ancient Greek Heroes : The Evolution Of Heros
The Evolution of Heroes Heros have been relevant for a multitude of years. From big–time Greek
heroes like Perseus and Theseus to heroes like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. All can
be connected by similar qualities. In the Ancient Greek myth, Hercules, Hercules must embark on a
journey of 12 labors to rid of a blood guilt he obtained after becoming mad and killing his wife and
children. After the hard parts of his life, he eventually achieved peace. There is also a modern hero
who eventually achieved peace. His name is Aaron Valencia and when he was younger he made
some made choices when it came to drugs and alcohol. He is now sober and living a better life
teaching kids to make wise choices through sharing his stories with local adolescents and building
classic cars. Hercules and Aaron Valencia are both heroes from two exceedingly different time
periods, but they do share comparable heroic qualities: relatable, clever, and bodacious. To begin
with, Hercules and Valencia both exhibit a similar heroic trait; they are both relatable. For instance,
in Clash of the Gods the historians mention, "This is the kind of story that everyone likes to hear
because everyone has experienced trouble, turmoil, and suffering in their lives. They have all faced

The Heroes Of Greek And Roman Mythology
The heroes in Greek and Roman mythology had the characteristics of violent masculinity and
bravery, the ideology of a patriarchal society in which all the men were elite than the women.
According to Kampmen in Gender Theory in Roman Art, "Roman society evolved in such a way as
to enable elite men to establish and maintain power over everyone else, " such men included heroes
like Hercules, Achilles, and Pentheus (1996, p.152). They represented the elite males who had stable
physical attributes that emphasized their masculinity and heroism. Heroes like the ones mentioned
above had been idolized and worshiped with cults due to their works in helping their societies to
fight monsters, the gods also favored them. Gender is emphasized by one 's appearance, dressing
being the primary attribute. The mythic narratives of Achilles on Scyros, Hercules and Omphale and
lastly Pentheus and Dionysus give a rather strange definition on the characteristics of heroes when
they crossdress. In this essay, I shall discuss how male heroes characteristics become subverted than
emphasized due to the myths of cross–dressing.
The armor of a hero plays an important role in catalyzing his heroism. It served as an object of
strength, virility, and masculinity. The armor of Achilles was according to the Greeks suggested a
new crucial role in the hero 's 'social reintegration ' after Hektor stripped Patroklos of Achilles ' old
armor, the hero undergoes what this critic describes as "a rebirth into

Hercules: The Greatest of the Greek Heroes Essay
Hercules, or known in Latin as Heracles, was the greatest of the Greek heroes, a paragon of
masculinity. In art, Hercules was portrayed as a powerful, muscular man wearing lion's skin and
armed with a huge club. He was also described as being a macho man buffoon, who was very
impulsive. Hercules' home and birthing place is in Thebes, Greece. Thebes is a city in central
Greece. It plays as an important setting in many Greek myths, such as the stories of Cadmus,
Oedipus, Dionysus and many other important roles in Greek Mythology. The demigod, Hercules has

These labors were designated to him through King Eurystheus because of the unspeakable acts he
committed. Hercules sought out many prophets, only in the end to return to King Eurystheus to
complete his 12 suicidal labors. One of the last 6 labors completed was to capture the Cretan Bull.
Minos promised Poseidon that he would sacrifice whatever the god sent to him. Poseidon sent a
great bull, but Minos thought it was too beautiful to kill. So he killed another bull, and Poseidon
grew angry so he made it rampage through the city of Crete. Hercules wrestled the bull to the
ground. He carried the bull back to Eurystheus, but it could not be tamed so Eurystheus set it free.
The 8th labor Hercules had to complete was stealing the Mares of Diomedes. Diomedes' Mares are 4
men eating horses with terrible tempers. Diomedes kept the horses chained to a golden post to keep
them from escaping. Hercules snuck behind the golden post taming the horses, and right before he
could release them Diomedes soldiers began attacking Hercules. From hearing all the commotion
Diomedes awakens. He is informed that Hercules is trying to steal the mares from a random foot
soldier. Diomedes is irate and attacks Hercules.

Greek Heroes: Hercules And Perseus
Another greek hero that went on surreal adventures was Hercules, but unlike Perseus, he would not
be appreciated in 2016's society. Hercules was appreciated by the Greeks for his courage and his
ability to make amends, but is disregarded in 2016 as a hero because of his recklessness and his
tendency for revenge. When any greek thinks of Hercules, they think of the astounding story of
courage of when he killed two snakes at the age of two. The snakes had snuck into his nursery room
that he shared with his brother in the middle of the night, and when his parents came running in
from his brother's screams, they found Hercules playing with the two dead snakes that he had
strangled. This shows courage because it demonstrates how even at the age of two, he was willing to
put himself in harm's way to protect himself others. As he grew older, his courage only increased.
Some other famous tasks he accomplished later in his life were when he rescued Prometheus from
the eagle that was going to kill him, and when he saved Theseus from being trapped on the chair of
forgetfulness for the rest of his life. With all this courage, he also had a sense of duty and justice as
he has always tried to make amends. The biggest example of this is when he performed the "labors

The Greeks Used Hesiod 's Theogony And Various Heroes Myths
The Greeks used Hesiod's Theogony and various hero myths to explain and conceptualise the world
around them, both internally, and externally. If we explore the ways in which the Greeks understood
themselves, and how they play a part in the world socially, the internal importance of these texts
become quite obvious. It instructs the Greeks how to live their lives, in doing so, the texts construct
a guideline for them to follow; establishing rules and highlighting characteristics which are to be
assumed by the Greeks to fit in with their presupposed role. However, a dichotomy occurs in the
way these texts are used, in that, while it explained the world internally, it coincides with the
external explanations of the fundamental nature, and metaphysical reality of the world in which they
live. By analysing fragments from the pre–Socratics, we can see how important the Theogony was
in fuelling this new mode of thinking, which would later result in an aspect completely distinctive of
the Greek mind.
I will be now arguing the importance of the Theogony, in prompting rational thought in the later
sixth century B.C.E. Historians will argue that the Greeks change in thought was a sudden shift from
a mythical explanation, to a rational one, or the 'Greek miracle', as it often labelled. I however, will
contest that there was no sudden, complete shift away from their mythical explanation. No, it was
far too entrenched in their mind to have suddenly disappeared when a small number of

Greek Tragic Heroes
Tragic heroes in Greek Tragedy consist of five main characteristics. First of all the character must
pass from happiness to misery. Secondly the character must not be perfectly just, but must be of
good character. Thirdly, the character's downfall must not result from immorality. Fourthly his
downfall must be a result of a hamartia, or a tragic flaw. Last, he must belong to distinguished
family in order to make the fall all the greater. In Sophocles' Oedipus Rex Oedipus best represents
the characteristics of a tragic hero. In the beginning of the novel Oedipus is the successful ruler of

Greek Heroes In The Odyssey, And Oedipus Rex
The classics of Greek literature: The Iliad, The Odyssey, and Oedipus Rex by their respective
authors Homer and Sophocles have given us possible insight into how the Ancient Greeks Heroes
viewed themselves. Although the Heroes of Ancient Greeks often possessed god–like powers and
skills, a closer look reveals that they seem to view themselves as weak children at the mercy of the
gods.
The Greek Heroes are portrayed as godlike in their stories such as the Iliad and the Odyssey they are
the main characters. These heroes were subjected to the toy like treatment from opposing gods.
Demonstrating her superiority, Athena uses her divine powers to trick Hector into fighting Achilles
"Athena luring him (Hector) on with all her immortal cunning...." (186–187). Athena had to forcibly
trick Hector into fighting Achilles because hector was afraid of the Greek hero. This can show that
the god simply adjusted the battle to favor her pawn Achilles.

forgetting, mortals often aggravated the gods by disrupting temples and prophets. So this would lead
to severe punishment from the angered god. The heroes simply acted like disobedient children who
had to be punished when they stepped out of line.
Manipulation of mortal lives is one thing that the gods loved to do. This can be seen clearly in
Oedipus Rex. The myth itself revolves around how his parents were presented with a prophecy from
Apollo. This prophecy stated that the child would kill his father and marry his mother "Aye, through
fear of evil oracles.... They said he should kill his parents..." (2.512.1267,1289). The pure fear that
Oedipus's parents felt must have been devastating. As their baby turned out to be a boy, their fears

Essay on The Iliad of Homer and Greek Heroes
The Iliad is an epic tale of war and hero's within the Greek way of life. A predominant and
consistent theme of honor and glory reside throughout the poem. The motivation for any Homeric
Greek is glory, or "Kleos", that is to be honored and respected among their people. Emphasis is put
on living by the heroic code. Honor is essential to the Greeks and life would not be worth living
without it. When a warrior or hero is advised to avoid risking their life in battle it almost drives them
even further towards the deed. It is better to be killed in action rather than to live and be thought a
coward. By our rational standards one would certainly not be thought a coward if they didn't rush
into battle to almost certain death, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would be brought back to the homeland and displayed as a sign of power; this is how Kleos was
attained, and how respect was earned. To the victor went more than the battle armor. They would
regularly take their pick of the local women to take back with them and "lay in bed together". This
became one of the centerpieces for the conflict between Achilleus and Agamemnon, when a quarrel
arose and Achilleus was asked to allow Briseis, a prize that he won in battle, to go back to her land.
It is common to keep your female prizes as your own; however, Achilleus felt that his ego was tested
when he was asked to return her. This went hand in hand with the honor factor, it would be shameful
for him to oblige and give back what he rightfully won. After all, she was a symbol of Kleos, by
giving her back he was losing something which he strived so hard to attain. The Greek warrior was
very selfish, there was no sense of community on their foremost mind, and it was about the self and
their status among others. The warrior who was most feared was the warrior that got the most
respect and admirations from the generations that would follow. The poem is after all about
Achilleus, a great warrior that fought hard and attained much glory in doing so. The shame that one
would feel from avoiding battle is evident in many cases throughout the poem. When Hektor is

The Similarities And Differences Of Greek And Roman Heroes
Introduction.
Greek mythological heroes, and Roman mythological heroes share similar trades, however are
different in many ways. These similarities and differences can be identified when looking at the
means for the creation of a hero, and a hero's life (birth, challenges, death), and how they become a
hero. Thus will this easay discuses Greek and roman heroes from the Trojan war to identify the
similarities and difference between them.
Important to use primary sources to identify the similarities and difference, thus will the Aenied and

Aenues challenges however are based on the greater good, of Rome.
Thus can one conclude a Greek hero, becomes a hero throughout his life, but does not have to die
like a Roman hero for that title.

A Hero As A Hero
Imagine if you were in a world without heroes that are brave, hardworking and show self–sacrifice.
It would be a total nightmare if everything will be disorganized. If a hero shows they are brave they
will be respected and everyone will look up to them as a role model. For example, people that are
veterans, policemen, and firefighters show us the US citizens every day that they will fight in a war
to save our country no matter what it takes. For a hero to show self–sacrifice they put other people
first in a life treating citation. For instance, a criminal comes into a store an older man immediately
goes in front of a little girl by herself. Hero won't think he will just do it even if it puts his life in
danger. Lastly, a hero is someone who is hard working. Say a person does not get the job they want,
they never give up and stick to it and work hard. A hero may make some mistakes along the way but
they remain brave show self–sacrifice and work hard.
A hero is someone who is very brave. For instance, a person who is brave enough to speak their
mind about controversial issues is a hero. For example, Martin Luther King, Jr. stood up for all the
colored people who did not have a voice. He was aware of the possible consequences of his actions,
which included putting himself in danger; however, he still stood up for what he believed in. He was
a hero because he bravely sacrificed himself to help others have equal rights in America. When a
person does good things for someone else in need they are showing they like to help others. When
people help others in need that makes them a good person and you never know who what will
happen if you help that person. In the end, a hero is a role model to people all over the world who
want to be like him.
An excellent example of a hero is Pfc. Tristan Segers. In the article "Soldier home After losing his
leg in Afghanistan" Tristan Segers keeps going with his life not feeling bad about his leg. "I just told
all the doctors that I didn't want my life to be different than it was before (Fiege 68). " Even though
Tristan was knocked down, he got right back up and stayed strong. A hero is also someone who
inspires people to do good on their part. In this case, Tristan has a lot of

Modern Day Greek Heroes
Whether in mythological times or present day, there has always been heroes. There are many
differences in the heroes of mythological times and today, but one key similarity is courage.
Whether it was Odysseus fighting for Greece to overtake the Trojans, or Martin Luther King Jr.
standing up for his civil rights, courage was required for both of these actions. It takes courage to
fight for one's country, and also courage to stand up for oneself. A key trait that can be seen in
mythological times is the trait of Greek "kleos." Kleos is the term used for glory and honor that the
hero seeks for himself or for his family. In modern day, our heroes can be associated with self–
sacrifice and fighting for a greater good. In both mythological ... Show more content on

There are many modern heroes that have displayed self–sacrifice. A wise man by the name of
Martin Luther King Jr. once said: "Faith is taking a step even when you don't see the whole
staircase" (Nguyen). He was one of many men who sacrificed himself for his cause, and this quote
could even be applied to his situation; he took a leap of faith even though he did not know what the
outcome would be. Martin Luther King Jr. knew he had a chance of being persecuted while fighting
for the rights of his fellow African Americans. Although he knew he could possibly die, he did not
stop fighting. He sought the freedom and equal rights of African Americans, and he played a large
impact on African Americans being granted these rights. Today, many soldiers volunteer to fight for
their country, knowing that there is a chance that they will be killed in battle. However, this does not
stop them. Soldiers today and always have been courageous, especially because they did not seek
glory and honor, even though they obtained it by fighting for their country. Nat Turner was yet
another modern day hero who fought for a greater

What Makes a Hero? Essay
Everyday, society misconceives identities. In the eyes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "A hero is no
braver than any ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer." Heroism, in Emerson's
perspective, is the ability to stand out for longer, and to endure hardships for greater durations. The
passengers on United Flight 93, which was hijacked by terrorists as part of the September 11 attacks
on the U.S demonstrated bravery like few other civilians can measure up to. Although it is not clear
whether passengers on the other hijacked flights fought back persistently, it is known that the
passengers on Flight 93 attempted to take control of the plane, and were successful. During the 35

When we think of one who lends his protection to others, we think of protecting them. When we
think of one who desires fame and stardom, we imagine them meeting a challenge, and willfully
fighting an opponent. Beowulf chose not to defend, he chose to run into the strife of battle. For
kindness? Or for distinction? There is much to be learned from Beowulf's last sentence. "You are the
last of our line, the noble Waegmundings, Royal House of Sweden. The rest has Fate swept to their
doom – princes, proud warriors, great kings in their glory – all to their doom. Now I follow after." In
our class discussions, it had been hypothesized many times that Beowulf's last line would reveal
what his true intentions were. In this case, it was easy to see; Beowulf spoke about glory, and glory
in Beowulf's time did not stem from generosity. The meaning of Beowulf's words are clear: he was
out to be recognized. When Beowulf suggests that he is the last of the Waegmundings, it adds a very
elitist tone. Beowulf is suggesting to Wiglaf that his family, his breed, is better then all others. What
has Wiglaf done? He has protected his warrior. He has not done any sort of generous act. Simply,
Wiglaf, who Beowulf praises at the end of his life has done good, and fulfilled Beowulf's values
because of his protection. Wiglaf may have

Define Heroism Research Paper
What would you define heroism as? There has been a lot of controversy over that question and what
qualities go into being a hero. Heroism can be defined by anyone from any background who think of
others before themselves, and preform the act expecting no recognition. A hero can be anyone
around you. Nothing matters but what is inside the person. Philip Zimbardo states," We want to
democratize the notion of heroism to emphazise that the most heroes are ordinary people; it's the act
that's extraordinary." It does not matter if someone is black, white, male or female. It is how the
person's personality and morals are making them stand out in the crowd. A person has to have

Heroes In The Odyssey
What is a hero? We all know of the nearly three thousand people who died on September Eleventh,
2001 in New York. But what about the over four hundred firefighters, policemen and paramedics
who died that tragic morning? These men and women knew of the danger they were going into and
yet, they were brave enough to rush into the World Trade Center while most fled the site. These
heroes saved many people. But what of those who came out of the rubble? Most went on living the
rest of their lives before the collision, not asking for glory. Heroes do not want power and glory but
instead show bravery when others cower and are willing to sacrifice for what they believe in.

Many people who do this volunteer in the U.S. armed forces. "While fighting for his country, he lost
an arm and was suddenly afraid" (SB p 56). Many soldiers go into battle knowing what they are
fighting for. But the heroes, are the ones who don't shy away from danger of death or loss of limbs.
The ones who die are unfortunate but still heroic. The ones who tell the story are still heroic in the
sense that they still sacrificed their time, efforts or even their body to the cause that they fight for. A
specific example of a soldier who sacrificed a lot is Pat Tillman. Tillman was offered a three year,
$3.6 million contract playing safety for the Arizona Cardinals. During his career, he said "Passion is
what makes life interesting, what ignites our soul and pushes our limits." This said passion of his
beloved country led Tillman to join the U.S. army after the 9/11 attacks, giving up the joy of being a
professional football player and getting that $3.6 million. Tillman ended up giving his life in the
field. Today, there is the Pat Tillman Foundation which helps support veterans, doing what Pat
would do.
In short, heroes are selfless men and women who don't cower in times of need and, if necessary,
sacrifice themselves. We need more heroes today. Like the firefighters on 9/11, we need to show our
bravery. We need fewer power–hungry men who will stop at nothing to get their power and we need

Heroes: Grappling With Power With the proliferation of supernatural television shows and movies, I
expected Heroes to be more of the same. It is not. Heroes offers a unique twist on the classic

Many of Claire's initial scenes have a sepia undertone to invoke nostalgia, or to reference a time of
innocence. In Peter's first scenes, when he is grappling with the discovery of his ability, the colors

movies and television shows, particularly action shows, favor orange and blue color schemes.

Lighting adds to the dynamic of many scenes. Sylar's scenes may be lit from the side, to create a

The Iliad and Greek Heroes
The Iliad is an epic tale of war and hero's within the Greek way of life. A
predominant and consistent theme of honor and glory reside throughout the poem. The
motivation for any Homeric Greek is glory, or "Kleos", that is to be honored and
respected among their people. Emphasis is put on living by the heroic code. Honor is
essential to the Greeks and life would not be worth living without it. When a warrior or
hero is advised to avoid risking their life in battle it almost drives them even further
towards the deed. It is better to be killed in action rather than to live and be thought a
coward. By our rational standards one would certainly not be thought a coward if they

In contrast, the Greeks always remember their hero's and would respect and honor that warrior for
the rest of their lives. A Homeric hero wins glory by performing great deeds, the memory of which
will outlive him For instance, an athlete in ancient times would be taken care of and all his basic
needs met if he were to win a medal in competition. Hunting was another way for someone to
achieve Kleos, however no methods were greater and looked upon with more respect than defeating
your enemies in battle. Achilleus felt some shame in letting his good friend Patroclus die in battle
while wearing his armor. He refused to eat or drink and deprived his body of any satisfaction until
he got a chance to avenge his loyal friend's death. He finally did so by risking his own life and
taking on Hektor in the great individual battle.
Hektor had the chance not to risk orphaning his son, but Hector knew that fighting
among the front ranks represents the only means of winning his father great glory, he
says. Paris, on the other hand, chooses to spend time with Helen rather than fight in the
war; accordingly, Homer and the other characters treat him with less respect and honor.

model of a hero has always changed throughout history. A hero essentially embodies the valued
characteristics of a society. In ancient Greece, the Greeks had heroes who embodies the morals and

of their culture. The first type of hero is an Epic hero, who is a brave and honorable character. An

The Iliad and the Odyssey are believed to be written down around 800–700 BC. Before then, the
stories were told orally. The poem the Iliad tells the story of Achilles, his anger, and his slaying of
the Trojan Hero Hector. The poem the Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus, and his decade long
journey back home after spending ten years in the Trojan war that lasted a decade. Though the
events of the Iliad took place during the Greek Bronze age, the culture portrayed is mirrored after
the Dark Ages. The Dark Ages, dated around 1000–800 BC, was a result of the fall of the
Mycenaean civilization which is dated between 1600–1000 BC. The cause of the decline of the
Mycenaean civilization is unknown, but the fall of the society caused social instability, creating a
need for protection. This created a society that relied heavily on the warrior class. During the Dark
Ages, the warrior class are considered the ruling class. In order for a man to lead, he has to
demonstrate his ability as a warrior through his strengths and intelligence. These characteristics are

Arrogance of Greek Heroes
Often readers will criticize the champions of classical and medieval epics for egotism. Critics cite
examples from the Odyssey, the Aeneid, and Beowulf of conceit and egocentric behavior. Odysseus,
Aeneas, and Beowulf display a well–known arrogance befitting their accomplishments. The
motivation for this arrogance, to complete these tasks, to perform these feats, is often over–
generalized to the point of inaccuracy and confusion. One must not let such misinterpretations
interrupt the humanization of these characters. Through the examination of the desires and behavior
of these epic heroes, we can discover an underlying need for recognition or honor. In classical and
medieval western epics, the hero's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Troy, he elected to follow the advice of the gods and, risking his life in the city, he manages to
steal the Pallas effigy! When the Cyclops Polyphemus captured him, instead of succumbing to fate
or attempting to break free by force, he dupes the giant with wine and blinds him with a hot spear!
His exploits, though certainly incredible, and almost always necessary, are always made more
dangerous and fantastic by his involvement. When escaping Polyphemus, his pride drives him to tell
his name, guaranteeing that the Cyclops will let his deed be known:
"'...again I began to taunt the Cyclops–men around me trying to check me, calm me, left and right:
"So headstrong–why? Why rile the beast again?"
...So they begged, but they could not bring my fighting spirit round.

you who blinded you, shamed you so–say Odysseus, raider of cities, he gouged out your eye,
Laertes' son who makes his home in Ithaca!"'"(l.548–62, IX)
However, this egotism, making sure his foe knows who he is, who his father is, and where he comes
from, serves not only to let his feat be recognized, but also to breed hatred with immortals:

and Jason become major influences in soldiers to be honourable, brave and noble. Different heroes
had a different influence and significance to the polis, ranging from aspects such as religious
tradition to having an impact on the politics of the time.

Thessaly as a precious possession of the man who fought for their freedom. Despite this, both the
story of Jason and the story of Theseus end with the hero dying a tragic death, outcast by the polis

Why Are Heroes Bad
The tendency for us to want of need heroes and villains impacts us dramatically in a number of
ways. Firstly, the heroes that we have, especially as children, do affect us dramatically in our
behaviour towards others and views on ourselves. One of the major problems with this is that we
don't choose the right people to idolised a lot of the time, which in turn reflects on our societal
values needing to be deeply questioned. Take a sports star, for example. A huge number of children
will grow up having a sports star or stars affecting their attitudes and values. These athletes can no
doubt have some very positive impacts, as many of them come from poverty or tough
circumstances. It's these athletes that give children in similar situations hope. ... Show more content

The way our heroes and idols act has a strong influence on how we behave as well. This can be seen
in many circumstances with the most obvious being celebrities setting trends. The caricatures we
create can also be very harmful to ourselves. Another example of negative role models is kids
growing up in a ghetto often idolise local gang members. This tends to lead to those same kids
replicating gang member behaviour, murdering, stealing and raping. The end result is some of these
kids either in jail or dead. This is a huge problem in our society. We value people with self centered
and lack of empathy not because we value these qualities within the person, but we look up to the
people that are revolting against the systems and cycles of poverty and pain that we are trapped in.
Young children in impoverished areas look up to gang members because they see that even though
they started from nothing, as they did, they became part of something that stands up to the idea that
all they will ever be is at the bottom of the food chain, picking up the scraps others have left behind.
For this reason, it's easy to see why these common thugs are idolised, they have respect and this is
something that every person wants, especially people that aren't given any. However, it does not do
us any good to look up to people that slip through the cracks of the system, but rather we should try
to change the system so this build up of resentment between different facets of society does not

The Heroic Heroes Of Greek Mythology
ENGAGING HOOK. Atalanta was one of the admirable heroes in Greek mythology. She was
similar to the goddess Artemis, in that Atalanta was also an exceptional huntress who loved the wild
and had no interest in men. After birth, Atalanta's father left her to die in the wild, but a she–bear
discovered little Atalanta and kept her alive. Eventually, hunters found Atalanta and taught her to
hunt (Hamilton 246). Atalanta became so skilled at hunting that Edith Hamilton referred to her as
"the pride of the woods of Arcady," and Atalanta even partook in the hunt for the monstrous boar
that Artemis set loose to ravage the country of Calydon (246–247). Atalanta was the first to strike
the boar with her arrow, earning her the honorary boar skin (248). Atalanta thereafter went on to win
a wrestling match against a man named Peleus (249). Later, Atalanta's father heard of her heroism
and welcomed her back home (249). Through much mistreatment and triumph, Atalanta came to
represent the ideal of gender equality. The first way in which Atalanta came to represent the ideal of
gender equality was that she faced discrimination on account of her gender. Since her birth, others
treated Atalanta as less than the opposite sex. Atalanta's father left her for dead in the wilderness
when she was just an infant, "because he desired male children" (Atsma). Atalanta's gender was a
death sentence. Sadly, the discrimination Atalanta faced continued on into womanhood. Though she

Gandhi Vs. Greek Heroes
The definition of heroes has been evolved variously through the ages. Greeks defined heroes as
brave, strong men or demigods who accomplished great quests during their lives. People nowadays
may define heroes as people who are changing the world to become a better place. A hero is
someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.1 Both Greek heroes and
modern day heroes complete tasks which are nearly impossible for a normal human. Mohandas
Karamchand Gandhi, who was the leader of activists in getting India independence from Britain, is a
great hero to many people. Although Gandhi and Greek heroes have many similar and different
aspects about being a hero, there are great reasons what make Gandhi superior.
Both Gandhi and Greek heroes have great perseverance and endurance to achieve their goals.
Gandhi was imprisoned many times in his life, but he never gave up, and tried his best to achieve
India Independence and peace. One of his great efforts is "The Salt Satyagraha" which he marched
200 miles which was accompanied by thousands of people because the British imposed a tax on salt
and made it illegal for Indians to produce from sea water.2 Greek heroes also had great perseverance
in completing their quests. Jason, for example, complete a quest to get the Golden Fleece by
enduring all difficulties and dangers and Heracles also completed his twelve labors because of his
great perseverance and effort. Therefore, perseverance and hard work are important

can be many people who are considered heroes in today's time. Such as people who rescue people
from life threatening situations. There are true heroes today because need help from others so that is
when heroes show what they are made of. Role models could also be considered a hero to some
people but not to everyone. Heroes are definitely needed in today's society because not everyone has
what it takes to defend themselves or get themselves out of life threatening situations.

A Comparison Of American Heroes Vs. Greek Tragic Heroes

  • 1. A Comparison Of American Heroes Vs. Greek Tragic Heroes American Heroes were inspired by Greek Tragic Heroes, yet both are very different from each other, but American Heroes have very similar traits to those who are Contemporary Heroes. An American Hero is a person who seeks justice and always defeats the enemy which results in all people having the justice they deserve. American Heroes also tends to protect all and has the tendency to fall in love with the " damsel in distress". This type of hero goes about his daily life, just like anyone else would, until it is time to fight, and at that time, their "supernatural" powers shine through in their fighting techniques. On the other side, all Tragic Heroes possess a flaw that will change their life from a life of happiness to a life of pain and despair. Ordinarily, Contemporary Heroes have nearly the same traits as American Heroes. Contemporary Heroes save and protect many individuals from violence and harm and lives a normal life until they have to face another obstacle. Both American and Contemporary Heroes are able to celebrate their victories, while Tragic Heroes can not do so because they are not victorious. In the movie, Last of the Mohicans, based on the book written by James Fenimore Cooper, the main character, Nathaniel Bumppo, is a great example of an American Hero. Nathaniel Bumppo (Hawkeye) is known as the first American Hero. He did not grow up with a family, but displayed great amounts of courage when fighting. Nathaniel Bumppo fought in order to ... • 2. Greek Heroes Atlanta And Daedalus Introduction (100 words) Write a brief paragraph introducing your 4 heroes. (The text box will expand as you type more text into it.) I chose the Greek heroes Atlanta and Daedalus to compare with two Modern day Superheroes called Wonder Woman and Robin. Atlanta was seen as a hero because she was the only girl hunter to stand equal to the best male hunters. Daedalus was a hero because he was the craftsman who created the Labyrinth to keep the Minotaur captive. Wonder Woman was seen as a hero because she was seen as having great leadership skills, Intelligence and Battle strategies. Robin was seen as a hero because he was the sidekick for the DC Superhero called Batman and together they fought crime. ca. 500 BC – ca. 490 BC Write (300 words) Using evidence from your template, explain why the Ancient Greeks needed heroes as part of their daily lives. Ancient Greeks needed Super Heroes because they represent hope, they are seen as higher models because of their behaviour. A Lot of younger people look up to them for things that could benefit them and also adults could look up to them for things that could be useful for them. For them these things could influence any age group's. Usually the heros are good people who did good deeds for their people, but sometimes they would do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Heroes Of Ancient Greek Myths Two Brilliant Heroes in Ancient Greek Myths Who has not heard of heroes in Greek mythology? They are the role models, inspirations, and protagonists in myths. In ancient times, after a long work day, the members of the community have little to no energy remaining, but utilize what strength they have left in a magnificent manner. The citizens meet up, and entertain themselves with myths regarding heroes, monsters, gods and goddesses. However, the most popular myths revolved around heroes, and their adventures. In the majority of myths, heroes participate in impossible adventures, and miraculously, came back with more confidence than they had when they set out. The heroes in these myths are the ones that everyone loves and appreciates. Two examples of famous heroes are Hercules and Achilles. They are two well–known heroes that play active roles in myths, and teach valuable life lessons. The two myths and the role of the heroes in them that are analyzed here are two fan favourites: the myth of Hercules and Athena, and the myth of Achilles and the Trojan War. Hercules's adventure begins as soon as he is born. The fact that he is a product of Zeus and a mortal enrages Hera, Zeus's wife, and Hercules suffers. As a result of this, Hera sends two snakes to kill him in his crib. The infant Hercules is unusually strong and strangles the snakes before they can assassinate him. As one can see from is, he is the most superior of all mortals, and stronger than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Heroes Gods And Monster Of The Greek Myth Analysis Wellington Gomez English 9 Ms. Williams November 16, 2015 Heroes, Gods and monster Of the Greek myth "Poor child. You are being destroyed by your own worth. Your talent had poisoned you with pride like the sting of a scorpion". That is a quote from the book " Heroes, Gods and Monster of the Greek Myth" written by Bernard Evslin on page 11. In this book, Evslin shows how the Greek Gods' react when they feel slighted or disrespected by mortals or anyone else over whom they have power. When a Greek Gods gets disrespected by a mortal or anyone else they have power over they feel jealous, angry and also they feel betrayed. One reason Greek Gods felt angry when they detect they are insignificant or disrespected by mortals or anyone else over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Dictionary.com, betrayed means to deliver or expose to an enemy by treachery or disloyalty. The character in the book "Heroes, Gods and Monsters of The Greek Myths" written by Bernard Evslin was a yellow–haired boy whose name was Phaethon. Phaethon felt deceived by his friend Epaphus. Phaethon and Epaphus were talking about their father, which are gods. Phaethon father is Apollo the sun chariot driver, and Epaphus father is Zeus the chief god, king of the mountains, lord of the sky. Phaethon feels mislead because after he tells Epaphus that he has driven the sun chariot. Epaphus express to Phaethon " I still don't believe your father lets you drive it. In fact, I don't believe you've been to the palace of the sun. I doubt that Apollo would know you if he even saw you" Evslin 65. This is a sign of betrayal because when Epaphus told Phaethon that his father was Zeus but when Phaethon told Epaphus about his father Apollo Epaphus didn't believe him. Also, Epaphus doesn't have any proof that Apollo isn't Phaethon father so he should at least believe it as a friend. The most common feeling when a Greek God is disrespect by a mortal or a God whom they have power over is betrayal, angry, and jealousy. How the Greek Gods feel when disrespected is the same way people feel when they are disrespected. When we feel that we are not given the respect we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Arrogance In Heroes, Gods, And Monsters Of The Greek Myth The definition of arrogance is overbearing pride. I see arrogance almost everywhere I go: the store, church, school, and on the street. Arrogance could be disguised as self reliance, but you need to be able to know when you need help, and be able to accept it. Those who do not accept help and are too arrogant, which is a sin. Many of the Greek myths, some of my family members, and myself sometimes have arrogance. Almost every Greek myth in Heroes, Gods, and Monsters of the Greek Myths has arrogance as a sin. The story of Phaethon reminded me the most of arrogance as a sin. Phaethon was a son of Apollo and he was talking to the son of Zeus, who didn't believe that he was the son of Apollo. Phaethon out of arrogance, told the son of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Diary Of Anne Frank Heroism Think about being trapped in an attic for two years. Not being able to go outside, limited amount of food, never being able to get away from each other. This is what the Frank family,VanDaan family, and Dussel had to deal with in the Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Heroism can be defined in many ways but in order to be a hero in this situation you need to be brave, courageous, bold and fearless. There are a lot of characters who show heroism. The ones that were the most heroic were Mrs. Frank, Mr. Frank and Anne they all showed boldness, courage, and bravery. They made the horrible experience a lot better. Being bold is a very strong act of heroism.Anne shows this on page 67 when she says "and know let's have a song,father...please....(to ... Your own son Peter...I've heard him moan in his sleep,he's so hungry. And you come in the night and steal food that should go to them....to the children" Mrs. Frank says this when she found out the Mr. VanDaan had been stealing food and stood up for the children and kicked Mr. VanDaan out. This risked Mr. VanDaan telling where they are hiding but Mrs.Frank had the courage to say this because she cares for others tremendously. Another example is when Mrs.Frank says "you shouldn't... you should have at least one day to yourself(talking to Miep)" page 54 Miep had been working alot and Mrs. Frank had courage to say something about it because she knew it was right and she knew that Miep deserved it. On page 106 Mrs. Frank says "Don't think I haven't seen you! Always saving the choicest bits for him! I've watched you day after day and I've held my tongue. VanDaan steal food and therefore kicks both of them out. Mrs. Frank shows tons of heroic acts that help them get through ... • 7. Conception and Birth of Heroes in Greek Mythology Essay Hero, the word strikes a universal chord making us think of exceptional and spectacular stories or deeds that far surpass any common feat. To the Greeks and many other cultures, the birth of these heroes is important. The birth of a hero sets them, apart often even before birth, from common mortals in Greek mythology. Birth is the first of many major events in our lives, our entrance into the world (Leeming). For heroes, that entrance must be as special as their lives will prove to be. A mundane birth is simply not an option for a hero, whether by the machinations of the gods or prophecies from an oracle, even the events surrounding their conception must be spectacular. From Perseus and Danaë to Theseus and Aethra, the myths ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Theseus, born of Aethra and Poseidon, grew up secretly in Troezen keeping him protected from those who would harm him. Thus, claiming the items his father left him and setting out for Athens, he started on the path leading to many great and heroic adventures. Hercules, born of Alcmena and Zeus, was conceived when Zeus took the form of Alcmena's husband and lay with her. Her true husband lay with her again later that night and she conceived twins. One would be born to her human husband, and the other fathered by Zeus himself (Hamilton). Zeus bragged about his soon to be born son alerting and infuriating Hera to Hercules existence. Hera was notorious for tormenting her husbands' illegitimate offspring since she couldn't harm Zeus outright for his infidelity (Hamilton). Hera persuaded Eileithyia to slow Alcmena's labor in a fit of piqué, almost killing her (Hamilton). Alcmena in fear of Hera's wrath gave her son to nature. Zeus (in some accounts Hermes) stole him away to Olympus, where he suckled at Hera's breast while she lay sleeping, granting him immortality (McLeish). When Hera awoke during the suckling she pushed Hercules away and the milk that sprayed out formed the Milky Way (Leeming). Zeus took the infant and placed him back in his crib before departing to Olympus again. Enraged Hera sent two massive serpents to kill Hercules and his brother as they lay sleeping ... • 8. Examples Of Greek Heroes In The Odyssey Greek Hero or Ordinary Mortal? Throughout all of the Greek mythology and texts that I have read, each story contains one or more heroes. A hero is a person who is selfless and somehow gets all of the attention in a story because he or she causes some sort of change. There is always someone who gains leadership qualities throughout the story and ends of saving the rest of the people. One particular person who stood out to me was Odysseus. Odysseus was an ordinary person who eventually accomplished a huge task. He ruled Ithaca with his wife, Penelope, and throughout the story, he tried to get back to Ithaca after the Trojan War and return to his position as king. Throughout the Odyssey, there are multiple instances in which Odysseus can be seen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He gains the trust of his people and he fights for his country. He helps his men out of deadly situations and he is willing to what it takes to set them free. He goes on a journey knowing that he could die, but he does it for his people. He is considered a hero because he encountered so many bad situations on his journey, but he eventually came out on top. However, I do not believe that Odysseus is a hero. Odysseus was a mere mortal with the same flaws as everyone else. Although he came back to his wife, I still believe that he let her down. If she was able to wait twenty years without having an affair with someone else, then he should be able to as well. I believe that Odysseus was a hero to so many people, but I do not believe that he was a hero to his wife. He was not faithful to her, and in my eyes, she should not have taken him back. Without this one flaw, however, I believe that Odysseus could have been the most heroic character in all of the Greek texts that I have ever ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Heroes In Greek Myth Heroes play a significant part in Greek myths as well as Roman. The Greeks have the greatest amount of hero myths, it is thought to be because not all myths have such great impression on human capability (Allan, 7). In the Hellenistic trait where adding to the accomplishments and outstanding aspects of mortals are viewed as advantages given by the given by the distant gods by other cultures (Allan, 7). The Greeks view things as realists. This means that they look at things, comprehend, and believe them as they really appear. They understand that due to the hero's good deeds they were no longer protected and now exposed to risks of divine disfavor, occasional defeat, and the inescapable physical decline of old age (Allan, 7). • 10. Greek Heroes: Indiana Jones Vs. Hercules Indiana Jones vs Hercules The ideas that make up the characteristics of a hero all derived from Greek classic myths. Stories of men conquering their fears and slaying monsters have been passed through generations. The changes of society make the plot differ from decade to decade, but the main features of a hero stay the same. Although some heroes fall short, Greek heroes set a standard for modern heroes of todays' world. A hero has always been a staple in Greek and modern myths. Whether he or she has special superpowers or uses their own cleverness, they're someone the ordinary man can look up to and admire. Indiana Jones is one of today's most popular heroes because he is an ordinary man whose adventures always lead him into situations where he faces unimaginable challenges and terrifying foes. • 11. Rupi Kaur As A Hero Essay People paint heroes in colors and words seemingly out of nowhere; however, these heroes are real in their own way. They may not have the superpowers, if they do have them, as described and shown, but there are qualities that were admired enough for them to be created. Heroes are very much real, not just something in a book. They are also human with human designs and faults. This makes them likable because not everyone is perfect and heroes acknowledge that themselves, no matter how much they are idolized. Examples of heroes are your parents, other relatives, people in the military, firefighters, policemen, musicians, characters, and authors. They are everywhere in your daily life if you just look around, real or not. Such as author Rupi Kaur and character Gabi Hernandez. Rupi Kaur is a regular woman currently living in Canada. From big–time Greek heroes like Perseus and Theseus to heroes like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. All can be connected by similar qualities. In the Ancient Greek myth, Hercules, Hercules must embark on a journey of 12 labors to rid of a blood guilt he obtained after becoming mad and killing his wife and children. After the hard parts of his life, he eventually achieved peace. There is also a modern hero who eventually achieved peace. His name is Aaron Valencia and when he was younger he made some made choices when it came to drugs and alcohol. He is now sober and living a better life teaching kids to make wise choices through sharing his stories with local adolescents and building classic cars. Hercules and Aaron Valencia are both heroes from two exceedingly different time periods, but they do share comparable heroic qualities: relatable, clever, and bodacious. To begin with, Hercules and Valencia both exhibit a similar heroic trait; they are both relatable. For instance, in Clash of the Gods the historians mention, "This is the kind of story that everyone likes to hear because everyone has experienced trouble, turmoil, and suffering in their lives. • 13. The Heroes Of Greek And Roman Mythology The heroes in Greek and Roman mythology had the characteristics of violent masculinity and bravery, the ideology of a patriarchal society in which all the men were elite than the women. According to Kampmen in Gender Theory in Roman Art, "Roman society evolved in such a way as to enable elite men to establish and maintain power over everyone else, " such men included heroes like Hercules, Achilles, and Pentheus (1996, p.152). They represented the elite males who had stable physical attributes that emphasized their masculinity and heroism. Heroes like the ones mentioned above had been idolized and worshiped with cults due to their works in helping their societies to fight monsters, the gods also favored them. Gender is emphasized by one 's appearance, dressing being the primary attribute. The mythic narratives of Achilles on Scyros, Hercules and Omphale and lastly Pentheus and Dionysus give a rather strange definition on the characteristics of heroes when they crossdress. In this essay, I shall discuss how male heroes characteristics become subverted than emphasized due to the myths of cross–dressing. The armor of a hero plays an important role in catalyzing his heroism. It served as an object of strength, virility, and masculinity. The armor of Achilles was according to the Greeks suggested a new crucial role in the hero 's 'social reintegration ' after Hektor stripped Patroklos of Achilles ' old armor, the hero undergoes what this critic describes as "a rebirth into ... • 15. Greek Heroes: Hercules And Perseus Another greek hero that went on surreal adventures was Hercules, but unlike Perseus, he would not be appreciated in 2016's society. Hercules was appreciated by the Greeks for his courage and his ability to make amends, but is disregarded in 2016 as a hero because of his recklessness and his tendency for revenge. When any greek thinks of Hercules, they think of the astounding story of courage of when he killed two snakes at the age of two. The snakes had snuck into his nursery room that he shared with his brother in the middle of the night, and when his parents came running in from his brother's screams, they found Hercules playing with the two dead snakes that he had strangled. This shows courage because it demonstrates how even at the age of two, he was willing to put himself in harm's way to protect himself others. As he grew older, his courage only increased. Some other famous tasks he accomplished later in his life were when he rescued Prometheus from the eagle that was going to kill him, and when he saved Theseus from being trapped on the chair of forgetfulness for the rest of his life. • 16. The Greeks Used Hesiod 's Theogony And Various Heroes Myths The Greeks used Hesiod's Theogony and various hero myths to explain and conceptualise the world around them, both internally, and externally. If we explore the ways in which the Greeks understood themselves, and how they play a part in the world socially, the internal importance of these texts become quite obvious. It instructs the Greeks how to live their lives, in doing so, the texts construct a guideline for them to follow; establishing rules and highlighting characteristics which are to be assumed by the Greeks to fit in with their presupposed role. However, a dichotomy occurs in the way these texts are used, in that, while it explained the world internally, it coincides with the external explanations of the fundamental nature, and metaphysical reality of the world in which they live. By analysing fragments from the pre–Socratics, we can see how important the Theogony was in fuelling this new mode of thinking, which would later result in an aspect completely distinctive of the Greek mind. I will be now arguing the importance of the Theogony, in prompting rational thought in the later sixth century B.C.E. Historians will argue that the Greeks change in thought was a sudden shift from a mythical explanation, to a rational one, or the 'Greek miracle', as it often labelled. I however, will contest that there was no sudden, complete shift away from their mythical explanation. No, it was far too entrenched in their mind to have suddenly disappeared when a small number of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Greek Heroes In The Odyssey, And Oedipus Rex The classics of Greek literature: The Iliad, The Odyssey, and Oedipus Rex by their respective authors Homer and Sophocles have given us possible insight into how the Ancient Greeks Heroes viewed themselves. This became one of the centerpieces for the conflict between Achilleus and Agamemnon, when a quarrel arose and Achilleus was asked to allow Briseis, a prize that he won in battle, to go back to her land. It is common to keep your female prizes as your own; however, Achilleus felt that his ego was tested when he was asked to return her. • 21. A Hero As A Hero Imagine if you were in a world without heroes that are brave, hardworking and show self–sacrifice. It would be a total nightmare if everything will be disorganized. If a hero shows they are brave they will be respected and everyone will look up to them as a role model. For example, people that are veterans, policemen, and firefighters show us the US citizens every day that they will fight in a war to save our country no matter what it takes. For a hero to show self–sacrifice they put other people first in a life treating citation. For instance, a criminal comes into a store an older man immediately goes in front of a little girl by herself. Hero won't think he will just do it even if it puts his life in danger. Lastly, a hero is someone who is hard working. Say a person does not get the job they want, they never give up and stick to it and work hard. A hero may make some mistakes along the way but they remain brave show self–sacrifice and work hard. A hero is someone who is very brave. For instance, a person who is brave enough to speak their mind about controversial issues is a hero. For example, Martin Luther King, Jr. stood up for all the colored people who did not have a voice. He was aware of the possible consequences of his actions, which included putting himself in danger; however, he still stood up for what he believed in. He was a hero because he bravely sacrificed himself to help others have equal rights in America. When a person does good things for someone else in need they are showing they like to help others. When people help others in need that makes them a good person and you never know who what will happen if you help that person. • 33. Arrogance Of Greek Heroes In Odyssey, Aeneid, And Arrogance of Greek Heroes Often readers will criticize the champions of classical and medieval epics for egotism. Critics cite examples from the Odyssey, the Aeneid, and Beowulf of conceit and egocentric behavior. Odysseus, Aeneas, and Beowulf display a well–known arrogance befitting their accomplishments. The motivation for this arrogance, to complete these tasks, to perform these feats, is often over– generalized to the point of inaccuracy and confusion. One must not let such misinterpretations interrupt the humanization of these characters. Through the examination of the desires and behavior of these epic heroes, we can discover an underlying need for recognition or honor. In classical and medieval western epics, the hero's ... When the Cyclops Polyphemus captured him, instead of succumbing to fate or attempting to break free by force, he dupes the giant with wine and blinds him with a hot spear! His exploits, though certainly incredible, and almost always necessary, are always made more dangerous and fantastic by his involvement. When escaping Polyphemus, his pride drives him to tell his name, guaranteeing that the Cyclops will let his deed be known: "'...again I began to taunt the Cyclops–men around me trying to check me, calm me, left and right: "So headstrong–why? Why rile the beast again?" ...So they begged, but they could not bring my fighting spirit round. • 34. Jason Influence On Greek Heroes The hero was a major influence in Greek society. As well as being a revered religious figure for Greek society, the traits and characteristics embodied by the hero became part of the 'perfect form' for Greek men. Furthermore, the military courage and prowess displayed by heroes such as Achilles and Jason become major influences in soldiers to be honourable, brave and noble. Different heroes had a different influence and significance to the polis, ranging from aspects such as religious tradition to having an impact on the politics of the time. There were several ways for a member of Greek society to be classified as a hero. Many of the heroes of Ancient Greece completed heroic acts of bravery or selflessness which made them well known throughout Greece. These were primarily in a military context, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jason, along with his Argonauts, worked to retrieve the Golden Fleece in order to win back the throne of Thessaly from Pelias. Jason, like Theseus, demonstrates how important it was for Greek heroes to fight for their polis. Embarking on the quest to save Thessaly from his power hungry uncle Pelias shows how much he cared for his polis and how much he was willing to sacrifice in order for the citizens to have a better life. Jason also had his boat, the Argo, preserved by the citizens of Thessaly as a precious possession of the man who fought for their freedom. Despite this, both the story of Jason and the story of Theseus end with the hero dying a tragic death, outcast by the polis that they were willing to sacrifice so much for. The downfall of these once great heroes shows that the glory of winning battles or returning triumphant from quests was not eternal for Greek heroes, and while many were revered in hero cults, many also died as outcasts, no longer revered by their ... • 37. Why Are Heroes Bad The tendency for us to want of need heroes and villains impacts us dramatically in a number of ways. Firstly, the heroes that we have, especially as children, do affect us dramatically in our behaviour towards others and views on ourselves. One of the major problems with this is that we don't choose the right people to idolised a lot of the time, which in turn reflects on our societal values needing to be deeply questioned. Take a sports star, for example. A huge number of children will grow up having a sports star or stars affecting their attitudes and values. These athletes can no doubt have some very positive impacts, as many of them come from poverty or tough circumstances. It's these athletes that give children in similar situations hope. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The way our heroes and idols act has a strong influence on how we behave as well. This can be seen in many circumstances with the most obvious being celebrities setting trends. The caricatures we create can also be very harmful to ourselves. Another example of negative role models is kids growing up in a ghetto often idolise local gang members. This tends to lead to those same kids replicating gang member behaviour, murdering, stealing and raping. The end result is some of these kids either in jail or dead. This is a huge problem in our society. We value people with self centered and lack of empathy not because we value these qualities within the person, but we look up to the people that are revolting against the systems and cycles of poverty and pain that we are trapped in. Young children in impoverished areas look up to gang members because they see that even though they started from nothing, as they did, they became part of something that stands up to the idea that all they will ever be is at the bottom of the food chain, picking up the scraps others have left behind. For this reason, it's easy to see why these common thugs are idolised, they have respect and this is something that every person wants, especially people that aren't given any. However, it does not do us any good to look up to people that slip through the cracks of the system, but rather we should try to change the system so this build up of resentment between different facets of society does not ... • 38. The Heroic Heroes Of Greek Mythology ENGAGING HOOK. Atalanta was one of the admirable heroes in Greek mythology. She was similar to the goddess Artemis, in that Atalanta was also an exceptional huntress who loved the wild and had no interest in men. After birth, Atalanta's father left her to die in the wild, but a she–bear discovered little Atalanta and kept her alive. Eventually, hunters found Atalanta and taught her to hunt (Hamilton 246). Atalanta became so skilled at hunting that Edith Hamilton referred to her as "the pride of the woods of Arcady," and Atalanta even partook in the hunt for the monstrous boar that Artemis set loose to ravage the country of Calydon (246–247). Atalanta was the first to strike the boar with her arrow, earning her the honorary boar skin (248). Atalanta thereafter went on to win a wrestling match against a man named Peleus (249). Later, Atalanta's father heard of her heroism and welcomed her back home (249). Through much mistreatment and triumph, Atalanta came to represent the ideal of gender equality. The first way in which Atalanta came to represent the ideal of gender equality was that she faced discrimination on account of her gender. Since her birth, others treated Atalanta as less than the opposite sex. Atalanta's father left her for dead in the wilderness when she was just an infant, "because he desired male children" (Atsma). Atalanta's gender was a death sentence. Sadly, the discrimination Atalanta faced continued on into womanhood. Though she was a fierce huntress, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This can be seen because Cesar Chavez also completed hero tasks that were done in ancient times. This can also be seen because our modern day heroes reflect back to the ancient ones for a example. The ancient heroes help show what modern days hero would be like. If our ancient heroes helped shape our modern day heroes than it is possible that our modern day heroes will affect the heroes that have yet to come. Heroes stand up for what they believe in. • 40. Gandhi Vs. Greek Heroes The definition of heroes has been evolved variously through the ages. Greeks defined heroes as brave, strong men or demigods who accomplished great quests during their lives. People nowadays may define heroes as people who are changing the world to become a better place. A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.1 Both Greek heroes and modern day heroes complete tasks which are nearly impossible for a normal human. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who was the leader of activists in getting India independence from Britain, is a great hero to many people. Although Gandhi and Greek heroes have many similar and different aspects about being a hero, there are great reasons what make Gandhi superior. Both Gandhi and Greek heroes have great perseverance and endurance to achieve their goals. Gandhi was imprisoned many times in his life, but he never gave up, and tried his best to achieve India Independence and peace. One of his great efforts is "The Salt Satyagraha" which he marched 200 miles which was accompanied by thousands of people because the British imposed a tax on salt and made it illegal for Indians to produce from sea water.2 Greek heroes also had great perseverance in completing their quests. Jason, for example, complete a quest to get the Golden Fleece by enduring all difficulties and dangers and Heracles also completed his twelve labors because of his great perseverance and effort.
