The document analyzes the website of the indie band Two Door Cinema Club. Some key points:
- The website uses bright colors, sans-serif fonts, and large images to promote an upbeat indie aesthetic.
- It incorporates widgets to stream music, link to social media, and make it easy to purchase tickets and albums.
- Navigation is clear and information on news, releases, and tours helps fans stay connected to the band.
- While the website and social media pages share a color scheme, they lack a fully unified visual style, focusing more on the music than visual branding.
2. What will we gain from analysing a
webpage?
Two Door Cinema Club are an
alternative/indie music artist like
our chosen artist Lauren Aquilina.
By looking at their website I
believe this will really help me gain
some inspiration into what my
group can create for our own
artists website that will fit into the
genre conventions of the indie
genre and any improvements I
feel we can make when creating
our own webpage.
3. Opening the Website…
Before you have entered the site, it automatically
brings you to this page promoting concert tickets and
provides a link to ticket master to buy them. This
displays their use of synergy working with other
conglomerates in the music industry to sell their
tickets.
The image to text ratio here is a very small amount of
text to a large image. This is to show the target
audience their live performance which they would be
experiencing if they bought the tickets to a show.
Although Alexandra Palace is a relatively small
venue, a packed crowd is shown. This makes the
target audience feel more urgent to buy a ticket to
their concert quickly so that they don’t sell out as the
crowd demonstrates their popular demand.
4. Colours
When I began analysing the website’s homepage the
first thing I noticed was a very simple yet colourful
website display that creates a continuous style
throughout the website.
The colour scheme used throughout this website is
attractive for both a male and female audience due to
the use of unisex colours which are bright yet gender
neutral meaning more of an audience is targeted.
5. Typeface
They have used a different typeface for
the bands name on the website to
create product identity for the band
and create a logo.
They have used a sans serif typeface
which created a casual look to the
webpage.
6. Links
The website uses cross media convergence again
as it includes links to the Twitter, Facebook and
Youtube pages for the artist available straight from
the website. This is convenient for fans and acts as a
hub for all these different social media websites. It
also provides links for those who want to find more
information out about the band.
There is also a links page on the top toolbar which
gives you more links to fansites, tumblr and record
labels.
7. Widgets
The website automatically plays the
artists music video once the page has
loaded. This forces anyone who
accesses the webpage to listen to their
music and narrative enigmas within the
music video serve their purpose to
engage the audiences attention.
There is also a link to buy the artists
latest album. Having built in widgets
that link to different websites is an
accessible easy way for the target
audience to find all the information
they could want quickly and simply.
8. Widgets
If you click on the buy album widget it links you
to a page which gives you different options of buying the
album for your country. Synergy plays a massive part here as
major stores such as play.com, HMV, amazon and iTunes are all
used to sell and promote their album.
There is also links to buy either a standard or deluxe version of their
album offering the dedicated fans extra tracks and information
about the band.
A link to buy a limited signed vinyl is also available in the UK and an
exclusive autographed copy of their album is available in the US.
This makes the audience feel they are getting a unique product
which is individual. This appeals to the target audience who seek to
be unique and have one of a kind and rare products.
9. Widgets
There is also a live feed of tweets from
the band on the right of the screen. This
demonstrates cross media convergence
between the website and twitter. This
allows even easier access to extra
information about the band for fans.
There is also a QR code so that fans with
a android phone or blackberry can take
a photo on their phone with a QR
scanner application and it links directly to
an application for portable band
information.
10. Information Available
There is information on the latest most up to date
new on what the band are doing, when there
next gigs are, what shows there have just been
etc. This allows fans to keep up to date with the
band’s activity and find out when the band will
be where they live for a concert.
There is also information about upcoming
releases in the form or singles and albums. This is
important as it tells fans when they can buy the
music which is ultimately going to determine an
artists success.
11. Images
There are very few images used on the
webpage. The only images featured is
the album artwork and the video at the
back. However there is a link to a photos
page on the top toolbar which has
further images
Each image is supported with a twitter
and Facebook link to it so it can be
shared via social networking sites. The
images used portray the typical style of
photography which the target audience
of the indie genre use.
12. Navigation
Navigation through the website to find the appropriate
information is easy for anyone accessing the website as
things are titled clearly on the top tabs for people to find
the information they desire.
13. Does a continuous style from social
networking sites exist to the website
create a band identity?
14. Twitter and Facebook Pages
• The record company applies synergy by working with social networking site
twitter to advertise its artist Two Door Cinema Club’s latest music, news and
concert information.
• This appeals to the target audience who commonly and often use social
networking sites such as twitter to find out information about their favourite
artists and new and upcoming music.
• There is not a clear style on this twitter page although twitter has a
customisation tool available.
• There is not a clear style on their Facebook page although this can mainly
be determined by Facebook's default settings which make it hard to create
an individual layout and style.
• This may suggest that the band choose to focus the importance of the
quality of the music rather than the visual aesthetics of the advertising
avenues. This is typical of indie artists and the way record labels chose to
represent artists from the indie genre.
15. Does a continuous style create a
band identity?
The apparent theme across the website and social networking sites is a
colour scheme of blue, black and white. There are subtle hints of rose
and turquoise also which are also demonstrated in the album cover for
Beacon.
