2. Websites are a fantastic way of a band or an artist to be
able to promote and market their music as well as to
interact with their fans. Beyond the websites that I have
chosen to analyse, we will be seeing a set of codes and
conventions within the websites that are often used.
The more interactive and appeal a website is, the more
likely it will attract an enormous amount of viewers.
3. The first website that I am going to be
analysing is the group Daughter. As you can
see, this is the first page of their website
which is the Home page; the tab is shown as
the three white lines whereby it can locate you
to different parts of the website.
This is what the audience will see when they enter
the website. As you navigate through the website,
you'll see the background image changing its
background picture. The colours that is used in the
website compliments well to one another which
could attract viewers.
Once the viewer has clicked on the 3 white bars
which is also called a navigation tool, it leads on to a
page that looks like this. The links are shown for
viewers to explore more about the artist or group.
For instance, if you click 'Video' the website will lead
the viewer to a page where there is archived videos
of the band.
For instance, if you click 'Video' the website will
lead the viewer to a page where there is archived
music videos of the band.
4. The second website that I will be analysing is an Indie
folk artist Bon Iver. The screenshot shows the first
page when you enter the website, which is the home
page of the website. The logo is set to the top left of
the website which includes the name of the artist.
The logo is also one of the
important conventions of the
website as a whole. When a
viewer decides to explore the
'community page' and they want
to go back to the main page, they
could just click on the logo which
leads the viewer back to the
home page.
Instead of having a symbol or some sort of hyperlink,
they used a tab where it includes all of the necessary
pages which is shown for the viewers. I believe that
this is a good idea because, it won't confuse people
whenever they want to explore the website in depth.
The layout of the website is
simple, similarly to
Daughter's website. Bon
Iver's website layout is
presented whereby the
viewer can just scroll down
and they will be able to see
what is in the navigation links
such as news and tour dates.
The logo in the middle of the website is Bon Iver’s
latest album “22, A Million.” which was released
recently. This indicates that the viewer, or new fans
will be able to be up to date with his latest music to
whoever wants to catch up.
I think that is crucial for music
websites because, if someone
were to get lost within the
site, the homepage button is
shown to bring the viewer
back to the start.
The website’s grid system
is just one grid where the
viewer would just scroll up
or down of the web page;
the buttons are presented
to show other pages of the
website.
5. LIVE- this shows which dates the
group is going to be performing live
and the location wise.
SHOP- Daughter have an individual
website for their merchandise- it is
navigated in their website for the
viewer to find it easily.
NEWS- the news page for Daughter is
used to show the viewers what is
going on with the group. It could
keep the fans up to date which could
be very useful.
PEOPLE- this page is to show the
record labels, manager of the
group, and the crew where the fans
or viewer are able to contact
through.
RELEASES- the page of Releases is placed on
the website to show the group's updated music
as well as their album cover. This will able
to catch the viewer's attention and it will
let them listen to snippets of their songs.
VIDEOS- this page is presented for the
viewers to watch Daughter's archived music
videos as well as new releases of their
music, which goes with a music video. This
will able for the viewer to enjoy their stay
while viewing the website.
6. COMMUNITY - this page is relevant to the
website because, this gives a chance for the
viewer to be a member of the website where
they will be updating people about Bon Iver.
RELEASES - the page of Releases is placed on
the website to show the artist's updated
music as well as their album cover. This
will able to catch the viewer's attention
and it will let them listen to snippets of
his songs.
NEWS - this webpage will enable the
viewer to know what is going on with the
artist and to be able to catch up. It
could keep the fans up to date which
could be very useful.
STORE - this is where the artist
sells his merchandise which is aimed
towards the fans - this is a good
example of synergy.
TOUR - this shows which dates the
artist is going to be performing live
and the location wise.
7. Website synergy
Synergy amongst the band and the artist or any other
products/content is highly popular and it is a very effective
technique for the audience to remember their brand as well as their
style. It is a very effective marketing tool towards the music
industry and the business.
Without the use of synergy, the artist or group will find it difficult
to market their songs as well as their individuality into the music
world. It is important for groups and artists to use synergy.
8. Technical codes
One of the crucial things that attracts the viewers to explore Daughter's
website is the way they have laid out the website- it is not too
complicating to use but it is not too basic. It is somewhere in between
where the website is average. I also really like the simplicity of the web
page design especially the colours which compliment each other.
On the front page when a viewer opens the website, we can already see
that when you click on the page there is a slideshow of images of the
group Daughter. The use of this technical code is appropriate because, it
enables for the viewer to see more about the group and its appearance.
Most indie websites tend to lean on the simplicity side of the web design
rather than have colourful backgrounds and bright texts. Websites such
as Daughter would much rather prefer have a simple layout where they
have a small navigation bar alongside background image that changes
once the viewer clicks on the page. Once they click the navigation bar, it
comes up with the actual Navigation page. You can clearly see that they
used a manageable layout where it does not look complex for the viewer
to use. The font, colour and text size fits the genre codes and convention
since Indie artists and groups would often use fundamental layouts.
9. GENRE
The genre of the website is an Indie genre which means that the group is also Indie.
Starting off, Indie websites commonly use more of simplistic layouts and they focus
on the aesthetic. They also try to make the navigation as straightforward as
possible in order for the viewers to find their way around a lot more easier.
This way, it could appeal a great amount of people viewing the website especially if
the majority of them are into Indie artists/groups then it is beneficial. A way in
which an Indie website will appeal people is their use of complementary colours. A
good website should be able to understand that some colours go well together and
some don't.
If they do not follow the rule, the website could not be presented of a high standard
therefor not a lot of people will enjoying looking at the website. An indie website
uses neutral colours such as black, white, nude, grey, burgundy etc. With the use of
these colours, it merges with the genre. Using the right colours, it could stand out
to people mostly the fan of the artist or group.
10. Style
As mentioned from the previous slides, Daughter's website does not use a range
of styles. They decided to stick to using the same font for every navigation
page- this tells us that they want to show simplicity rather than have a variety.
The website does not use a large amount of colours, they used neutral colours
such as black and white. Here is an example of their web page which shows
their tour dates. It may look simple and basic, but the aesthetic could catch
people's attention Another example is on Bon Iver's web page, we can see that
the text and the use of the background colour are simplistic.
11. The main purpose of a music website in general is to make sure that fans of a certain artist or group will
be able to explore and updated what has been happening with their favourite artist or group. This way,
the viewer will have the chance to check any tour dates, news, find their social medias etc. Another
reason as to why a music website is important is how people are likely to find you.
These days most people will go online and research about different groups and artists and if you don't
have a website you are missing out on all of this. A website will not only give you credibility but it will
also help to give the impression that your company is bigger and more successful than it may actually
be.
One of the great things about the internet is that the size of your company does not really matter. It also
creates awareness and they are able to promote their upcoming release of new songs and music videos.
It gives the viewer a chance to look and catch up with what's been released.
In addition, the use of website is cheaper and more flexible than print advertising: The Internet is
extremely different from print advertising in that space is cheap, your advertisement is accessible for a
longer period of time, the content can be changed without having to ask someone to do it for you (if you
use a content management system) and you can potentially reach a wider audience.
