7. University Transfer
Students begin a degree-
level program at a college
and then transfer to a
university to complete the
degree
Courses are modeled on
university courses
Completion of UT courses
does not guarantee
admission to the university
—it is still competitive!
8. Transfer Credit
• Transfer: the movement
of students between post-
secondary institutions
• Transfer credit: the
credit received for the
successful completion of
prior post-secondary
studies
9. Transfer Jargon
Types of Post-secondary Institutions
◦ Sending Institution – the transfer institution/college at
which you took courses (ie. Lakeland College)
◦ Receiving Institution – the institution/university to
which you intend to transfer (ie. U of A)
Types of Credit
◦ Specified Credit – there is a course that is an “exact”
equivalent at another institution (ex. BIOL 107)
◦ Unspecified Credit – the course is transferable but
there is not an exact match (ex. BIOL 1xx)
10. Transfer Credit Tools
Alberta

Saskatchewan (U of S)
http://explore.usask.ca/admissions/transfer/
Example:
Lakeland College SOC 100 (3 credits)
= SOC 100 (3) at the U of A
= SOC 111.3 at the U of S
= SOCI 1000 (3) at the U of L
11. Reasons Courses May Not
Transfer
• Grades
• Minimum grades to transfer may be in effect
• Program/University Requirements
• A change in desired route
• Not all courses transfer to all institutions
• Certain courses do not fit in to certain
programs
• Too many junior-level courses
• Residency requirement
12. Other Reasons Students
May Not Transfer
University Requirements
• Competitive admission GPA
• High school requirements
• Quotas for out-of-province or international
students
• Shelf life
• An error in the application process to the
university
13. UT Subject Areas
• Education
• Fine Arts
• Humanities
• Mathematical and
Statistical Sciences
• Natural Sciences
• Physical Education
• Social Sciences

2011-2012
177 “new” students
81 returning
258 total
Where are they from?
45% from Lloyd (116 new and returning students)
78 of 177 NEW students from small-town SK/AB (44%)
This year, 2 from USA; 11 from Manitoba; 4 from Ontario; 3 from BC
So where are they going and to what? (see this slide)
3rd largest group is “undecided”!!
10 UT programs in AB (RDC, Med Hat, Grande Prairie, etc)
But nothing similar in SK (different than a regional college because we own our own courses)
Students may transfer from College to university
Or university to university (if you start at the U of S and transfer to the U of A, you are still a transfer student)
In Fall 2010 (most recent #S available) in AB:
12 328 students transferred WITHIN the province of AB, so lots of people are doing it, and it works!
This includes UT students but also students who complete a diploma and then go to a university to get a degree…and others who change their mind/school
Fall 2010
131 Lakeland College students transferred to universities in AB
Highest # to the U of A (46)
AU (28)
MacEwan (26)
U of L (17)
U of C (12)
Mount Royal (2)
We don’t get the same stats from Saskatchewan, but I think in Fall 2010, our #s to the U of S passed the U of A for the first time (48 students or so)
