HISTORY 
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is 
a public research university located in 
the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, 
United States. Founded in 1919, it is the second-oldest 
campus of the University of California system. With an 
approximate enrollment of 29,000 undergraduate and 13,000 
graduate students, UCLA is the university with the largest 
enrollment in the state of California and the most applied to 
university in the world with over 105,000 applications for Fall 
2014.

The Times of London ranks UCLA 8th in its Times Higher Education 
World Reputation Rankings (2013) and 12th in its THE World University 
Rankings (2013-14). The reputation ranking is based on a survey of 
senior academics, while the world ranking relies on performance 
indicators in the areas of teaching, research citations, industry income 
and international outlook. 
UCLA also ranks 12th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities by 
Shanghai Jiao Tong University, based on faculty publications and 
citations and the number of alumni and faculty who have won Nobel 
Prizes and Fields Medals.
