Editor's Notes

  • #3 Important to mention that many of the students may already have started down your path through an academy course, etc. Understanding all these options require a process – they just don’t happen – start researching your plan now and share what you hope to do with parents, family, friends, so they can support you.
  • #4 Difference Military options, Take the ASVAB now. How to become an officer. Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Employment: discuss the importance of upward mobility, benefits that may include education etc.. Apprenticeships: Very job specific, Journeymen/ Union plumber, welder etc.. Gap Year: Student sought/selected experience to possibly mature or travel. Some structured programs with applications ex: City Year, Year Up. GAP Year fairs also available.
  • #5 Why are we going to talk a lot about the 4 year/2 year college path? Because 87% of WPHS graduates go onto higher education. For more information about other paths or any of the programs that we mentioned please see your counselor or Ms. Carter.
  • #6 Highlight application – options you can select Really for students who want to go to NOVA for 2 years and then transfer to a 4 year college, not a students back-up option Not all students who apply are admitted
  • #8 We have a resource in the building!
  • #9 Watch your deadlines!! Priority Deadline – schools may have this deadline to get your information in to be eligible for scholarships – Priority means MONEY We want to support but you need to give us time to do so. Review OUR deadlines – More information to come – College Favorite Lists – Ms. Carter reminded through Remind 101 Waitlisted: Students may not hear until June, July or never if they are accepted – still need commit somewhere on May 1
  • #10 Talk about Common AP students can apply to multiple colleges via the Common Ap portal vs. School Specific Applications. Possible Coalition Application Fees will range from 25 to 100. Students on Free and Reduced Lunch that have used an SAT wavier will receive 4 college fee waiver codes and forms. Others will need to see their counselor or Ms. Carter if a fee waiver is needed.
  • #11 Those who still need to sign up see the upcoming dates – if you are eligible for free and reduced get a waiver in CCC Students must send scores through the SAT or ACT websites Plug our PTSA Test Prep Program They have a website on West Potomac’s site
  • #12 Mrs. Carter’s Lunch and Learn Highlight the process, fees and deadlines. Make sure you check to see what the school requires. Online on WPHS website or see Ms. Hofmann
  • #13 Transcript Fees – First 3 are free, everyone there after is 5 dollars and there is a late fee!!!
  • #14 Cheat sheet for VA public schools in Senior Handbook
  • #15 Transcript Fees – First 3 are free, everyone there after is 5 dollars and there is a late fee!!! Free and Reduced lunch students fees are waived
  • #16 Where can I access forms? On our website!
  • #17 Did you know you get alerted if one of your “colleges I’m thinking about” visits WPHS? Did you know we log when your transcript was sent and you can see it here? Have you used the college search engines located here at your finger tips?
  • #18 Plan for college visits in advance. You will need your teacher’s permission to attend.
  • #21 Emphasis on the appropriate amount of schools to apply to (4-6) Keep your grades – 7th semester report
  • #23 Time for questions if there are any and remind them to take the Handbook from their counselor
