10. Co-operative Education
• Co-operative education combines academic studies with work
experience.
• Co-op allows you to gain up to two years of relevant work
experience.
• Academic terms alternate with work terms forming
study/work sequences. Study/work sequences vary between
programs and cohorts.
• A work term is usually four months long, but some programs
have double work terms that are eight months long.
• Can make your 4 year undergraduate degree become closer to
5 years BUT, you end up with about 2 years of relevant paid
work experience
13. The Basics
• Majority are public institutions
• Range in size from 30 undergraduate students (Dominican
University College) to 7,000 (Trent University) to 14,000
(University of Victoria) to 30,000 undergraduates (University
of Waterloo) to 64,000 undergraduates (University of Toronto)
• ISM Supports 10 applications worldwide
• UC applications count as 1
• UK applications count as 1
• Every application to Canada counts as 1
14. The Application Process
• Relatively simple
• Fill out an online application (some personal information,
parent information, your program of study, maybe a bit about
activities, maybe selecting housing options and possibly some
short answer questions)
• Submit and pay by credit card
• Often you receive log in information afterwards so you can log
into the university’s portal (upload high school transcript and
IB predicted grades)
or
• Your counselor sends your high school transcript and IB
predicted grades though Naviance or registered mail

37. National Survey of Student
Engagement (NSSE)
• Through its annual survey, the NSSE annually collects
information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities
about first-year and senior students' participation in programs
and activities that institutions provide for their learning and
personal development.
• The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend
their time and what they gain from attending college.
• Survey items represent empirically confirmed "good practices"
in undergraduate education.
• Institutions use their data to identify aspects of the
undergraduate experience that can be improved through
changes in policies and practices.

Universities in the Primarily Undergraduate category are generally smaller in size and offer fewer graduate degree programs, instead emphasizing the undergraduate classroom experience.
Universities in the Comprehensive category conduct some graduate-level research and offer a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs.
Universities in the Medical/Doctoral category offer a broad range of graduate-level programs, including PhDs, and are strongly research-focused.
