This document contains summaries of two student documentaries from last year - "The right to be colourful" and "The food cycle". It analyzes what each documentary did well and could improve on. It concludes that "The right to be colourful" was the most effective because the presenter was natural, the supporting materials matched what was being discussed, and the interview was concise. "The food cycle" was deemed the least effective due to an awkward presenter, poor volume control, and disorganized animation.
2. I will be analysing…
The right to be The food
colourful cycle
– By Rafaella Batista – By Nkechi Chukwumah
3. The right to be colourful - WWW
The presenter was natural
and had good volume
control with the
background music.
Also, the natural lighting
was really clear, there was
no shadow and didn’t cover
anything in the shot
The animation of how
time has changed was
really good in displaying
to the audience how its
evolved
4. The right to be colourful - WWW
The use of a clip of the
Prime minister talking
about gays, which matched
perfectly to what the
presenter was saying, also
it shows someone familiar
to the audience
Show a supporting image of
Boris Johnson holding up a
poster supporting gay
people, again presenting
someone familiar to that
audience – and advertising
that campaign
5. The food cycle - WWW
They had clear shots of the
presenter talking to the
camera, which was framed
well
The animation of the two
screens swapping created a
quirky feel to their
documentary
6. The food cycle - WWW
When showing a new title,
the way they threw 2p
coins behind it was really
effective in getting a feel for
capitalism
They showed many
shots of adverts on
different places, e.g
the
train, busses, billboard
s showing variety of
shots
7. The right to be colourful - EBI
The interviews where all in
one location and where
mainly females, so she
could have got more people
and had a better location
There was no text in
the corner of the
interview letting the
audience know who the
professional was
8. The food cycle - EBI
The presenter was really
unnatural – they could have
used someone less
awkward on camera
The text on screen was the
sae as the voiceover, and at
some parts of the
animation, the voiceover
didn’t match the clip
9. The food cycle - EBI
They focused too much on
Special K in their
documentary, and didn’t
really explore more
throughout
The interview with the
professional was dragged
on and really long, and the
edited didn’t flow well to
cut out bits said
10. What is the most effective documentary from last year?
The right to be colourful
This documentary was the most
effective as I actually learnt some
information from it. Also it was the
most like real documentaries, as their
presenter was natural, and spoke
confidently to the camera. Their
supporting animation, images and
clips all went well with what the
presenter was talking about at the
time.
Furthermore the clips they used when
supporting their statement, they only
showed the key bits of the clip, and
their interview was short and to the
point – not going off subject.
11. What is the least effective documentary from last year?
The food cycle
Why?
This documentary was the least
effective was the food cycle because I
though it was a poor example of a
documentary, as one key to a
documentary is the presenter, and the
presenter in this is really awkward and
unnatural.
Also the sound in the background was
really noisy, so they had bad volume
control and the organisation of their
animation was quite dis proportionate
on the page, one side had the pictures
while the other was left blank.
