Rapson Hall was built as a lecture hall for the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus and
currently houses both the Schools of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Rapson Hall was
originally designed in the 1960s in a modern, brick style by architect Ralph Rapson. However, in

Structure is one thing that both O'Gorman and Roth agree on. This is due to the fact that a building
is not possible without some support system therefore making structure nonnegotiable. The
Vitruvian factor that is sometimes disregarded is Venustas or beauty. In O'Gorman's piece ABC of
Architecture Venustas is touched on but not analyzed to the extent of both Utilitas and Firmitas.

The idea to improve the park was motivated by Olmsted's design of Central Park, which Fairmount
Park was intended to model after. Just like Central Park a competition was held to see who would
lead in the design of the project. Four distinguished names were selected as finalists in the design
and development of the park. Those 4 names were William Saunders, Edwin Durang, Andrew
Pallas, and the firm of Sidney & Adams (Smith 286). Saunders specialized in the design of

in nature or natural environments and how he integrates these into his manmade spaces. He spent

Connecting the public to the building should be more than just creating a fascinating and interesting
facade. My idea is to describe how a building is able to connect to people, by allowing them to not
just walk inside or around but on top of the building creating a public space. The reason why I chose
this topic is that I wanted to make a connection to my studio project, and how I developed the idea
for it. In addition, I wanted to compare it to the Oslo Opera House and how this assisted me in
arriving at my final design. My studio project and the Oslo Opera House have a different scale

Lunuganga is the country estate of Geoffrey Bawa, a renowned Sri Lankan architect (1919–2003). It
is one of his prime projects where he spent most of his later life constructing it bit by bit with the
development of his personal intellect and as experimental grounds to test his new ideas. It is sited on
the land cutting into the northern and southern halves of the lake Dedduwa, rising and falling across
two low hills in the coastal town of Bentota. The estate is set in the wet tropical zone and is warm
throughout the year.
The inspirations for building the garden of Lunuganga were many, the prime being the ambition to
outshine the garden of Brief by his brother Bevis Bawa. Also, when analyzed it can be stated that
overall construct of the garden was one that combined many memories of his travels to the western
world and that of the native Sri Lankan landscape i.e. formed of water, tropical forests, boulder
gardens, royal pleasure gardens and bungalow gardens during the British rule in Sri Lanka. From the
beginning, it was conceived as an extension of the surroundings– "a garden within a larger garden"

A closer inquiry into the space planning of Lunuganga garden reveals, that it unveils itself one after

Carol Johnson, born September 6th 1929, is one of the leading ladies in the field of landscape
architecture. She was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and spent most of her childhood outside hiking
and camping. The love for the outdoors was inspired by her parents; a lawyer and a school principal.
According to Lewis (2014), the parents were avid and skilled gardeners who frequently talked to her
about plants and nature. The family also vacationed on the Massachusetts island; she has memories
of walking along the Gaylord Cliffs, where Native Americans used to live. This created a nature–
and–culture connection in her mind that has guided her till now (Lewis, 2014).
She is a graduate from Harvard University with a degree in landscape architecture in 1957 and was
the only woman student in the Graduate School of Design's landscape Program then. Her personal
growth is attributed to professors such as Sigfried Gideon, the author of Space, Time and
Architecture. During her time at Harvard, Johnson picked sentiment in environmentally sensitive

INTRODUCTION
Born on September 8, 1914, Sir Denys Louis Lasdun is considered among the most distinguished
British architects of the 20th century. He is credited with having contributed to London's urban
landscape. Among the works for which he is best known are the Royal National Theatre at London's
South Banks of the Thames, the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg, the Royal College of
Physicians in Regent 's Park and the University of East Anglia. The others of Lasdun's buildings
were a building at 32 Newton Road, Paddington, Hallfield Primary School, Usk Street Housing,
Keeling House and the Sports Centre at the University of Liverpool. Considering how eminent these
landmark buildings are in London's landscape, it is apparent that Lasdun was a much–sough

falls under the Brutalist architecture of the United Kingdom under which many prominent 20th

This shows how important it is, to let the public knows that their actions actually matters to the
world. Especially during my study abroad program, where I travelled to a number of European
countries, it is obvious to me that the Northern Europe is way more aware of this situation and their
way of living is comparably more conscious of their actions than the current situation in the United
States is. Comparably, if the United States can have the same state of mind as these "Green"
countries, the ripple effect will be way stronger than those countries as well. This gives me a strong

and architect. With a career spanning over 30 built projects, predominantly based in Mexico,
Barragán's works influenced contemporary architects, designers, or artists, in terms of his distinctive
design principles. His influential work upon Mexico's modern architecture enabled him as an
awardee of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1980 – an award that gave Barragán recognition and
critical acclaim, one that he did not receive until near the end of his career. But even with the sudden
phenomenon of his reputation due to his solitary and reserved personality, the evidence and quality
of his work still remains – which truly begs the question: How did Luis Barragán's architecture
