The Separation Of Family
his statement, he admits that "No respect was shown..." Indeed no respect was shown. Separating
families for the desire of money may be looked at as corrupt. No shame was brought to those
capturing and destroying family bonds. Instead, the ones in shame were the ones in captive. Going
further into the late 1700's and early 1800's, Separation of family continued. A young boy by the
name of Frederick Douglass did not have the constant love and warmth of a mother throughout his
developing life. At the time, captive African were now slaves. Slaves were expected to work hard

How Did The Beatles Influence American Culture And...
The Beatles
The Beatles were an English rock band formed by 4 teenage boys in 1960. The Beatles became the
most influential musical rock act of the era. They experimented with many music genres and still till
this day are considered the forefathers of today's boy bands. With Beatlemania and the beginning of
the "British Invasion" in the United States, they revolutionized music.
The band consisted of four members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison & at first
Stuart Sutcliffe. When Stuart left the band to go to art school, he was replaced by Ringo Starr as the
band's bassist. . The band at first called their selves the Blackjacks, then changed to the Quarrymen,
Then Stewart suggested Beatals. As a tribute to singer Buddy Holly and The Crickets. They went

`` Night Women `` By Edwidge Danticat And The Story Called...
The story called "Night Women" by Edwidge Danticat and the story called "The Awakening" by
Crystal Wilkinson portray womanhood in different ways. However, both stories are very interesting
and convey powerful ideas to the readers. Although the portrayal of womanhood is different, they
share some similarities. To start with, I would like to express my thoughts about "Night Women",
which has become one of my favorite stories due to its unique language, exquisite metaphors, and
powerful message. It is about the life and hard times of any single mother who has to do whatever
possible to provide a means for their family because her son's father decided to "disappear with the
nights shadows a long time ago." It shows different feelings, which are mixed, and some of these
feelings are the innocence of a child as well as the care and love of a mother through hard work,
sacrifice, and dedication. She was a prostitute, a job that is very hard for any woman, but most of
them depend on it in order to succeed and make money to cover their costs of living. In this story,
the woman is portrayed as person who doesn't depend on a man to succeed and give a good life to
her kid. She was alone, she didn't have the company of her mother either; but she was facing the
challenges that the life put on her way, showing that women have the same strength, power, and
ability to achieve success as men. I think that Danticat portrays the woman in that way in order to

Compare And Contrast Death Of A Salesman And Willy Loman
The Death of a Salesman written by Arthur Miller. A book about an old man whose occupation is a
salesman. The story takes place in Brooklyn Manhattan, in a nice quite neighborhood and the main
protagonists is named Willy Loman. Willy Loman main goal in life was to succeed and make a
name for himself but since he didn't achieve it, he passed on that dream to his two sons. From Willy
Loman point of view his second son did make a named out of himself but for his first son, that
dream of success didn't happened. Biff Loman is his name. The Long Journey into Night written by

Biff Loman and Jamie Tyrone are similar. These two characters are similar in failure, they never
made a named for themselves or lived up to their father's expectations. Certain people who have
read or will read The Death of a Salesman as well as Long Day's Journey into Night, will say that
the only similarity to these two characters is that they didn't lived up to their father's expectations
and those people are right but theirs more to it. Yes, they are similar in failure, but they are also
similar in how they became who they are. They are similar in what made them, or the events that
lead them to this point in their lives. The events that lead these two men to become who they are,
started at an early age in they're life. Biff Loman around his high school years, everything was going
great for him, nothing was the matter and he had his father's trusts as well as his father belief. This
all changed when "Biff discovered that Willy has a mistress, which strips him of faith in Willy"
("Death of a Salesman": A Symposium). From that point on Biff lost all respect for his father. Biff
not only lost respect for his father but also lost the will to continue his schoolwork. This is the event
that made Biff failed math and that made him lose hope on going to summer school to try to make
up for it. How does this tie in with Jamie, well the things is Jamie had respect and trust for his father.

Personal Narrative: A Tale Of Two Monsters
Sleep, for a lucky few, is a respite, the soothing feeling of resting your bones after a long day's work.
But not for me. For me, night was the dreaded time when monsters that were invisible in the
daylight decided to come forth once more. But these monsters were not like those in horror films –
with blood–stained fangs and black capes, pale skin and a desire to kill, lurking behind every door
and crouched in every corner, waiting for an opportunity to pounce. No, these monsters were of a
different breed altogether, so much worse simply because they were in my head. Closing my eyes
would not help and neither would filling my ears with all the wax in the world. It would only make
the images burn that much brighter and the screams that much

The United Artists was a New York based company that opened in London through the European

Night made its successful turn when the film was produced, selling at 1500 to 1800 prints. The
musical made a fortune at $1.3 million within the first week and $5.8 million on the 6th week of

received an extensive amount of criticism from British, American, and international critics, such as,

Lester incorporated some of the French influence, the film was not an independent film–maker, like
the style of the French. Lester was one of the youngest directors in the film industry at an

The Beatles: The Biggest Media Sensation in the United...
It's no secret that The Beatles were the biggest media sensation in the United States when they made
their American debut. Upon their arrival, the Beatles wore sharply tailored suits and cast themselves
as adorable, accessible teen heartthrobs. But by the end of the decade, they had grown out of the
suits and moptops and into a mature, individual image and unique sound. This paper will look at and
discuss this change and how their evolution was reflected in the U.S. media.
Introducing...The B–E–A–T–T–L–E–S!
Before their big debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in February 1964, The Beatles had tried and
actually failed to become known in the United States. Released under very small, unknown record
labels, "Please Please Me" and "From Me to You" were first played on American radio in February
1963. From a group whose name was misspelled B–E–A–T–T–L–E–S; "Please Please Me" failed
miserably with the second single, "From Me to You" not doing much better.
Before 1964, very few British performers had made a dent in the U.S. music charts, so at the time, it
wasn't all that surprising that when given the choice to play an unknown British band or an
American hitmaker's version, most DJs chose the latter.
According to Beatles historian Bruce Spizer, the reason British bands had such a difficult time in the
American music industry was the fact that during the 1960s, especially the early 1960s, the United
States was by no means "living in a global community" and during this time Britain

Analysis Of Gender Stereotypes By Marele Day
Traditionally, women were expected to be feminine, meek and powerless. In Marele Day's novel,
she utilises this subversion of women to challenge society's perception of gender stereotypes. Day

suit was hanging in the wardrobe neatly pressed", however, later reveals her to be a woman, and the
'blond' a male one night stand. Thus, challenging the idea that women are subpar to men by
displaying women as strong, capable of doing the work of a man, but also managing to thrive in a
harsh setting where women are not usually found. Day, in extract two declares that she deliberately

Significance of Fog in Long Day's Journey into Night...
Long Days Journey: The Significance of Fog (8)
A Long Day's Journey Into Night, by Eugene O'Neill, is a deeply autobiographical play. His life was
rampant with confusion and addictions in his family. Each character in this play has a profound
resemblance, and draws parallels and connections with a member of his own family. The long
journey that the title of the play refers to is a journey into his past. Fog is a recurring metaphor in the
play; it is a physical presence even before it becomes a crucial symbol of the family's impenetrable
confusion. It is referred to in the text as well as stage directions in this play. It sets the mood for the
play in all its somber hues.
He uses the fog outside the house as an atmospheric element that ... Show more content on

There's no fog in the harbor. I'm sure the spell of it we've had is over" (O'Neill 736). The
introductory image establishes the fog as both the intermediary and a symbol of Mary's addiction.
The fog is easily identifiable as Mary's morphine high, representative of her cloudy mental state.
Mary sinks back into her addiction as the night falls and slowly regresses further away from reality
and her family. The fog signifies the state of mind that she is in. Fog has a dense and opaque quality
that creates low visibility and blocks out the sun. The fog described in the stage directions is "...as a
white curtain drawn down outside the windows" (O'Neill 773).
Mary tells Cathleen how she loves the fog, which can be interpreted as her love for the morphine
that removes her from any type of coherence. Mary was on a path to recovery and now has slowly
lapsed into her state of addiction once again. She likes this state because " It hides you from the
world and the world from you. No one can find or touch you any more" (O'Neill 773). For Mary,
this fog is representative as an alternative or refuge from reality. Her relapse into addition causes
clouds her judgment and impairs her sight. She can hide herself in the fog so that her family can be
oblivious to her addiction.
"Mary, however, is not alone among the "fog people" – the three men also have their reasons for
withdrawing into night" (Brustein 1021). Each of these men is haunted by his individual past and

"Witty, wryly humorous and fast–paced, "The Life and Crimes of Harry
Lavender" is a thriller with a twist which brilliantly evokes the sleaze below the surface of the city's
glittering faade". Is this what the novel is about?
Marele Day's novel, "The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender" explores a large scope of issues
related to crime and mystery writing. The use of simple language, symbolism, clever wit and a
certain sense of satirical mockery all contribute to composing this witty, wryly humorous and fast
paced novel. Through the way in which Day portrays the protagonist, Claudia Valentine, she
challenges the stereotypes and ideas set in the readers' minds, in relation to gender issues. Day also
succeeds to ruthlessly unmask ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She shows a female character doing what previously only men had done; directly committing herself
to the criminal underworld, walking dangerous streets at night, boldly trespassing into perilous areas
and defending herself– all the things that only men would do in conventional versions of the genre.
On the very first page, Day introduces this concept of ironic mockery by creating confusion as to the
gender of the character. A tough voice that fills the requirements of hard–boiled school men is
established, and only after turning the page does the reader realize that the terribly hung–over
narrator is a female private–eye and the blonde in the bed is a good–looking male.
The novel is set in Sydney. Day represents the city form two different views. One is Claudia's safe,
sheltered Sydneyof innocent childhood,
"Cars sat in the sun silently absorbing the heat, reminding me of childhood summers. Days at the
beach and before you went home all the doors of the car would be flung open and the heat that
rushed out nearly knocked you over."
The reader soon discovers it to simply be a faade that blinds us from seeing the seedy, savage and
corrupted undertones of a world which very few are aware of. This other side is associated with
Harry
Lavender, who is slowly infiltrating all of society like cancer slowly invades a healthy human body.

The Beatles Influence On America
Billy Joel once said, "The Beatles were the band that made me realize it was possible to make a
living as a musician, ... When I heard the Beatles, I said, 'That's what I want to do!'" (Quotes 2).
Billy Joel expresses how he, and other musicians felt towards the British Invasion, and one of the
bands leading the invasion were The Beatles. In the early to mid 1960's The Beatles ruled the music
charts in a phenomenon only known as Beatlemania. After 1966 a new Beatle style was born, one
that defied the standards that they originally set. The Beatles revolutionized music, society, and
created a paragon for future musicians to follow. The Beatles were important figures in American
History because the changed the standards of music and influenced society into new, deeper ways of
thinking and interpreting music.

Analysis Of The Film ' Daisies '
The 1966 Czechoslovakian film Daisies was released two years before what was known as the
Prague Spring, where a reformist Czech leader loosened up restrictions in the Communist dominated
nation. The result was the 1968 invasion led by the Soviet Union that crushed this little rebellion and
firmly re–established Soviet control of the nation (Encyclopaedia Britannica). That puts a context on
this film and gives some reason to the madness that the film portrays of two young women who
decide to spend the day being "bad," which means doing things that are against the grain of normal
society. Nothing criminal happens with the girls (well, maybe some trespassing and stealing some
farmer's crops) but the point is that they want to do things that aren't really normal for the day. These
two girls, both named Maria, are probably about twenty years old or so, and therefore would have
been born immediately after the end of World War II. Though their youth would have shielded them
a bit, it was a time of great transition for the country as it was under Nazi occupation first before
being taken over and held by the Soviet Union. They probably would have grown up hearing about
the great freedoms that their parents experienced before the war when they were a free nation and as
a result, that seed would have grown within their minds that they too wanted that freedom of
expression denied to them under the "Worker's Paradise" of Soviet Communism. So, what were the

The Face Of Lennon By John Lennon
The Face of Lennon Help! Help! Help! The Beatles faced plenty of highs and plenty of lows
throughout their careers, and the transition between each stage was always shaky and lined with
turmoil. Perhaps the most evident of these transitions was between the years of 1964 and 1965. In
this period, songs from A Hard Day's Night and Help! clearly show that John Lennon, a member of
the group since the very beginning, was facing difficult, emotional times. These three songs speak
volumes for the trouble that Lennon was going experiencing: "You Can't Do That", "You've Got To
Hide Your Love Away", and "It's Only Love". The first of these songs is the one that helps to set the
stage for next two: "You Can't Do That". Released as a part of the album A Hard Day's Night in
1964, this song is a product of Lennon's surroundings more than a product from Lennon himself.
Having first touched down in the United States on February 7, 1964, John fell in love with it all.
Since Rock and Roll was on its last leg in the States, the Beatles were welcomed with excitement
and a wave of energy. Despite only having stayed until February 22, Lennon was moved by the
momentum the United States gave them. Only three days later, the Beatles went on to record "You
Can't Do That" on February 25. Written by the ever impressionable John, this song clearly reflects
the burst of energy brought about from the trip to the States and his love for American Rock. This

Why The World Should Subsist On Less Than US
An estimated three billion of the world's population subsists on less than U.S. $2 per day, and I
unfortunately am part of that statistic. On average, I make less than 2 dollars a day which roughly
equates to approximately 700 dollars annually. This means that I cannot afford a house, a car, or any
of those luxuries. On a regular day, I would wake up and find some work, most of the time I pick up
cans and take them to a recycling center for a miniscule amount of money. After that, I look through
the trash cans in order to find resources that people throw away carelessly. I also do subsistence
farming to provide food for me and my family. Finally, after a hard day's worth of work, me and my

Acquainted With The Night Poetic Devices
In "Acquainted with the Night," by Robert Frost, a first person narrator wanders out of the night and
then back again. During his dark and dim travels the man stops to listen to a cry from a distance.
After his pause, the man continues on his journey, indifferent about the night. "Acquainted with the
Night" contains many different poetic devices that help the continuity and theme flourish. Since this
poem is a terza rima, it allows the reader to quickly and smoothly operate through the poem. The
terza rima rhyme scheme offers a steady rhythm for the reader to follow along. Furthermore, the
authors word choice of "saddest city lane," and "dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain," help to
convey a facade of melancholiness and depression. However, lines like, "I have walked out in rain––
and back in rain," ultimately portray the underlying message of the poem. This poem resonates
deeply with me because it offers a different perspective to any challenges and hard times a person
can face. Throughout my sophomore and junior year of high school, my attitude towards life was
not optimistic. I grew towards pessimism, and would simply go through my days waiting, begging
for the day to be over. I, like the narrator, had "out walked the furthest city light." I can remember
just sitting through one of Coach Day's math classes and closing my eyes, envisioning the 2:55 p.m

How the Music Industry Utilized Film to Help Create the...
With all the social, political and cultural changes occurring in the 1960s, youth culture was
embracing the ideologies of rebellion and counterculture. The Folk music of the sixties was giving
way to the new Rock revolution and with this came the iconic Rock Rebel. The Rock Rebel is a
romanticized existential figure who revolts against social conventions in a quest to find value or a
sense of freedom beyond the pre–existing conforms of society. (Camus; 1967) Through analysing, in
a sociological context, the way the music industry utilized film to help create or reinvent star image
of Rock icons The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, we can see how the signifier of the Rock Rebel
has evolved with the developing Rock culture. (Dyer; 1979:1) ... Show more content on

(1997:24) For example, George shows his rebel streak against traditional fashion when he speaks
against the choices of 'professional trendsetter,' stating: "You mean that posh bird who gets
everything wrong?" Ringo in an interview refuses to be defined and as such when asked "Are you a
Mod or a Rocker?" he replies "I'm a mocker." Similarly John also makes quick witted remarks to
reporters such as: "How did you find America?" "Turned left at Greenland." While Paul's rebellious
side is evident in the train scene when a fellow passenger tries to take away their music, "Yeah, but
we want to hear it, and there's more of us than you. We're a community, like, a majority vote. Up the
workers and all that stuff!"
While it was HDN that helped merge The Beatles' youth audience with a more adult crowd, thanks
to the mature verite style aesthesis, it was the dramatised film Help! (1965) that fully actualized
their Rock rebel personas in correspondence with Laurence Grossberg's notions of consumerism and
mobility in relation to Rebel image. (Grossberg; 1992) While there were several scenes of transport
and mobility shown in HDN, such as the train scene, it lacked the overindulgence of commercialism
that embodies the Grossberg's Rocker; they were the working–class 'boys next door' who became
famous, yet kept their iconic polished image of the average man. In Help! this image is shattered

Poaching
Poaching is a cruel, dangerous and abusive way to make money. While there is many different types
of people look it down, there are still workers that use this method to make a profit for themselves.
As unfortunate as it is, there a nowadays many efforts that are trying to maintain poaching to a
levels of absolute 0. Despite theses efforts being honorable and heroic, there are many challenges
that are faced when completing this job. For instance, an article called, "Can Drones Stop Animal
Killers?," written by Kristin Lewis talks about new ways to catch poachers, but also the serious risk
and hardships of attempting to catch the said animal killers. To illustrate, one section of the article
states, "But poachers are notoriously difficult to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

is extremely high, and can result in serious injuries, and in worse case, death. However, despite
some of the challenges that come with dealing with poacher, there have been many successes from
the organizations that increase the likelihood of catching poachers and saving expensive animals
from harm. For instance, an article written by Justin O'Neill called "Can She Be Saved?," included
many of the success that certain efforts have had along the way. To elaborate, one piece of evidence
that comes from the article says, "Over the years, the Trust has raised 190 orphaned elephants and
95 are now living back in the wild" (O'Neill 20). This excerpt from the article clarifies how the Trust
(A place where elephants can be saved) saved many orphaned elephants from terrible fates, as most
of them were most likely orphaned because of poachers. Due to the their ivory tusks, the elephants

The Concept of Time in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's...
The Concept of Time in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night
The pre–Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus said in his theory of the Universal Flux that
"everything flows and nothing abides; everything gives way and nothing stays fixed. You cannot
step twice into the same river, for other waters and yet others go ever flowing on... Time is a child
moving counters in a game." (Allen 103)
And so it is with the characters in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night. Time is little
more than a game in which they move as checkers, if not pawns. In their repetitions and habits, the
family seems to be stepping towards the same river again and again; but each time, the step falls into
a different stream. In its seeming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fourth, who has nightmares, or at least night–frazzles, is Edmund's drug–addicted mother, Mary.
For her, all times is a time warp. She extrapolates from her present during her fits and, in essence,
almost dreams that she isn't in time at all.
Louis Sheaffer, says the loss of all sense of time by Mary is shown "as the mother, fathoms deep in
morphine, trails the now–bedraggled (wedding) gown on the floor while she rambles on vaguely
about seeking something she had lost." (Goldberg 3) But the loss of soul–in–time is even more
acutely shown in two other passages.
A foghorn continually bothers the characters all during the play, ostensibly drawing them back into
the present. At one point, Mary confides to the servant–girl after a foghorn blast, "It wasn't the fog I
minded Cathleen. It hides you from the world and the world from you... No one can find you or
touch you any more...It's the foghorn I hate. It won't let you alone. It keeps reminding you, and
warning you, and calling you back (O'Neill 98)." Later, in railing about quack doctors, she cries,
"They'll do anything...to keep you coming to them. They'll sell their souls! What's worse, they'll

Culture Of Fear Research Paper
The valleys vibrant with red clay and banana trees darken as a storm approaches A dark cloud
covers the land of one thousand hills, a cloud of fear and hate. A dam of coexistence and
cooperation, once holding the two peoples together, begins to crack, And a deluge of resentment
spills out over the escarpment, into the valley below. The workers gather their machetes and axes,
which lie in the houses after a hard day's work. They acquiesce to this leadership, ignoring all
thoughts of defiance, as they have been taught. A group of monsters leads the pack of workers,
holding their weapons with concealed hate. A culture of fear created these monsters, but their
weapons will do nothing to end their worry. Groups all over the land march toward schools,

Surgery In Shonda Rhimes A Hard Day's Night
Surgery is a very ambitious and demanding career choice. The years of medical school are rigorous
and then being a surgical intern isn't any easier. Many medical shows have been used for more
comedic purposes, using less medicine and intensity. These shows are missing the touch of drama
and realism that comes with working in a hospital that Grey's Anatomy has and executes perfectly.
In Shonda Rhimes's drama, Grey's Anatomy, she takes the viewers into the lives of these characters,
and shows that it isn't easy being a surgeon. In "A Hard Day's Night", Meredith Grey, the daughter
of the famous surgeon Ellis Grey, is put to the test during her first shift as a surgical intern at Seattle
Grace Hospital. Her and four other interns are assigned

Doesn't it ever bother you or make you wonder how you fell asleep the night before? It's an odd
thing isn't it. You lay down shut your eyes and when you open them it's morning. Almost half your
life you spend sleeping. It's like a fight. You get up preparing to battle through the day. A day that's
always slightly different to the next. You never know what to expect, what curve ball the day's
gonna throw at you. Then, then you have a break before you get up and fight the day again. A fight:
"struggle to overcome, eliminate, or prevent." The struggle to overcome. To overcome that restless
feeling. Restless because of the silly little crease in the curtain that keeps picking at of your mind
until finally you have to get up. Pull the curtain shut so the small light shining through it has gone.

Shakespeare Addiction
It has a place in all of our hearts. Shakespeare is well and alive in modern society. In fact, there are
many famous quotes from Shakespeare that are being used on an everyday basis. Shakespeare
quotes are used often in our regular conversations. According to Christopher Gaze, we often say
phrases such as "green–eyed jealousy", "It's Greek to me!", and "Laughing Stock" without realizing
we are quoting Shakespeare's works and plays. Many of the words we use in our everyday
conversations have been contributed by Shakespeare. According to Mental Floss, words such as
addiction, fashionable, and manager have been created by William Shakespeare. Furthermore,
Shakespeare is ever present. Shakespeare exists everywhere in our world. This is mainly because

Mary Tyrone's Actual Happy Ending
"Grief does not change you. It reveals you" was said by the author, John Green who wrote The Fault
in Our Stars. This quote, however, relates directly to Eugene O'Neill's play, Long Day's Journey into
Night. Grief from the past will not change an individual; however the event will mold the person's
future. Eugene O'Neill's life helped to create the phenomenal writer he was because of his personal
experiences. In Eugene O'Neill's play, Long Day's Journey into Night, the characterization of Mary
Tyrone demonstrates a sense of loss through her loneliness, addiction and unconditional love for her
family. The sense of loss in the Tyrone household is supported by the constant reminder of Mary's
loneliness and isolation. During her drug induced hallucinations, Mary returns to a life that she was
happier in; when she was younger and only had one child, Jamie. She is completely isolated from
her family and the rest of her community. Being a morphine addict, Mary skips many of the family
meals complaining that she is not hungry. Skipping daily meals, which symbolize communion in a
family, isolates her from the family. Mary moans about the past and her happy life by articulating
how their summer house is not a real home because she is always lonely, "In a real home one is
never lonely. You forget I know from experience what a home is like. I gave up one to marry you –
my father's home" (74). What Mary considers to be her utopian lifestyle– a young bride and a
promising marriage, has

A Hard Day's Night Comparison Essay
While watching both movies I was entertained however the two movies have a very different way of
doing that. Both films attempt to show a story through different styles, characterizations, contents,
focus', and lessons but in the end, one does a far better job. By comparing and contrasting the two
films one will prove it was more effective than the other telling a story. A Hard Day's Night in terms
of style is the most real of the two because it's the real Beatles. The songs that are sung in the movie
were written specifically for the movie and yes, the four artists are the ones who perform the songs
throughout the movie. In Walk the Line, however, the songs written are real but the people who
perform them are actors. The story they tell is also acted because the movie was filmed long after
Johnny Cash's rise and fall which is portrayed in Walk the Line. As for characterization A Hards

the peak points in his life all based on factual stories from news headlines and from family members

Why The Beatles Came To America
The Beatles brought a lot of changes in many different ways and that is partly why they are so
interesting to study. I have read a book about what this band had offered to some of their fans and it
is absolutely breath taking! I am going to developed this later... So, yeah, they brought very personal
things to their fans' life and heart and in the world of music in general, but they took a lot of baby
steps to get there...
When they arrived in America, they were alreay known in England, but the success they had back
there was nothing compared to what they were about to experiment. Like I said before, it all started
with their perfomance in Ed Sullivan. With 90% of the United States watching, the Beatles certainly
had all odds on their side.

Naturalism In Long Day's Journey Into The Night
The trope of naturalism in western theater have readdressed the form of dramatic arts from the royal
narrative and biblical tales to stories of commoners that the audience can actually relate to.
Naturalism also allows the distinction of tragedy and comedy to dissipate by developing a plot that
focuses on a day–to–day occurrence. This convention is represented by playwrights who are writing
in a more colloquial voice with stories about the middle–class –or working–class, and their
struggles. Naturalism gave birth to the works of Eugene O'Neill and Edward Albee that pushes the
nuance of dysfunctionality and addiction to its extreme in works such as Long Day's Journey Into
The Night and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. The two playwrights zoom in towards a domestic
issue that were driven a lot by each character's desire for happiness and the disappointment that are
not being expressed appropriately that drove them to an addiction as form of escape from the reality.
The two plays place a tragic maternal figure who escapes their unachievable idea of happiness
through a facade of lies in the forefront of the narrative. In Long Day's Journey Into The Night,
Mary Tyrone's ideal happiness comes from her sense of nostalgia and what defined her happiness
when she married Tyrone while Martha's imaginary son and her inability to face the reality of a dull
life of being married to a university professor are what became of her tragic downfall at the end of

Long Day 's Journey Into Life
Long Day's Journey into Life There are many catastrophic diseases in people 's everyday lives and
although addiction isn 't necessarily considered a disease, it is still life controlling and traumatic.
Addiction isn 't necessarily viewed as severe but it can be, it can also lead to a person 's death.
People all over the world either have some sort of addiction or they know someone who does.
Addiction isn 't limited to drugs, alcohol or shopping, it can be anything. People who suffer from
addiction tend to lose themselves both mentally and physically, they tend to become more dependent
on their addiction, they no longer have a mind of their own or control over their own body or
impulses. Addiction isn 't only shown in the real world, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All the family members resent each other for their misfortunes and deal with their sadness by
escaping in their addictions (drugs, alcoholism). The scene portrays patterns of denial, blame, anger
and bitterness that are typical in families affected by addiction. "Family members take it not just to
feel better but to escape pain, which then affects parts of the brain related to coping, emotional
regulation and judgment. So this makes the family dysfunctional in relation to each other, and they
escape into the drug even more to cope. It 's a vicious cycle."According to Kathleen Carroll, PhD, a
psychiatry professor at the Yale University School of Medicine, echoed Shurtleff 's comments. "The
addiction keeps family members stuck and angry and unable to deal with each other," (Source:

addiction is in fact a painful experience. The family themselves have associated with addition in
both a way to numb the pain and forget it.

Cultural Significance Of A Hard Day's Night
In this essay I will examine the cultural significance of Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night.
Examining its influence on other films and cultural phenomena, I shall argue that Lester's film
invented or popularized many filmic conventions now considered standard in the movie and
television industry. This paper covers concepts such as montage theory, jump cuts, camera shots,
French New Wave, art film (especially surrealism), realism (documentary), and performance of the
'actors' (particularly accents) as they relate to a Hard Day's Night.
A Hard Day's Night stands as a revolutionary movie in the history of motion pictures. It 'invented'
the music video, popularizing what are now standard tropes of the genre. It is the first 'rebellious

Even though Lester did not invent all of the techniques used in "A Hard Day's Night," he borrowed
and re–invented techniques which eventually influenced many other films(Ebert, 1996). For
example, Lester's use of jump cuts. Jump Cuts were a legacy of the French New Wave, which was
perfected by Jean–Luc Godard in 1960s Breathless. Jump cuts are utilized to "increase expressive
effects of editing" and this idea was inherited from Einstein's theory and practice of
montage(Kovâacs, 2007) . Koovacs, the author of Screening Modernism states that jump cuts
suggest to the audience the actions which are not represented in film and also represent 'narrative
device' in which scenes or events are not explicitly told but are suggestive (Kovâacs, 2007)

Legend Day Character Analysis
In Legend, the main character Day, quite similarly carries the same characteristic as Boxer does,
mentioned before. In Legend, Day is known as a "criminal," to the Republic but when being a reader
of the book you can easily see the sympathetic, kind person he is, much like Boxer. In the novel,
Day risks being caught, tortured and killed to go back to his family house and spy on his family and
make sure they're doing okay and they have what they need to get by, we also see this very early in
the book to give you an image of who Day actually is and what he is willing to risk for loved ones:
"I [Day] shake my head. 'One night a week, remember? Just let me check up on them [family] one

He sticks with something he starts, and sticks with what he believes in. Boxer kept all the animals
working on the windmill, motivated them and ended up becoming the main builder of the windmill.
Boxer was brainwashed into believing this windmill would be revolutionary and help the farm
immensely so he ended up dedicating most of his time and himself towards the building of the
windmill: "Nothing could have been achieved without Boxer, whose strength seemed equal to that
of all the rest of the animals put together. When the boulder began to slip and the animals cried out
in despair at finding themselves dragged down the hill, it was always Boxer who strained himself
against the rope and brought the boulder to a stop. To see him toiling up the slope inch by inch, his
breath coming fast, the tips of his hoofs clawing at the ground and his great sides matted with sweat
filled everyone with admiration. Clover warned him sometimes to be careful not to overstrain
himself, but Boxer would never listen to her. His two slogans 'Napoleon is always right', seemed to
have a sufficient answer to all his problems. He had made arrangements with the cockerel to call
him three–quarters of an hour earlier in the mornings instead of half an hour. And in his spare
moments, of which there were not many nowadays, he would go alone to the quarry, collect a load
of broken stone and drag it down to the site of the windmill unassisted."

Comparing Oedipus Rex, Hamlet And Long Day's Journey Into...
Throughout the few most recent months we spent some time reading different plays. After reading
numerous plays it led to a discussion. Why did Mrs.Seibert actually make us read these plays?
Although each play has a different title, theses plays have much in common with each other.
Oedipus Rex, by Sophocles, Hamlet by William Shakespeare, and Long Day's Journey Into Night
were three of the plays we read in class. Although it was apparent that these plays were different, but
however, reflecting back to these plays it makes sense why we read them together. Oedipus Rex,
Hamlet, and Long Day's Journey Into Night all have family issues, each play ends in a tragedy, and
each of these plays without a doubt has a twisted plot. Reading each play it ... Show more content on

While reading Oedipus Rex my first initial reaction was wow this play is strange, but however,
when I started reading the other plays like Hamlet and Long Day's Journey into Night it started
becoming more normal that most of the plot seemed to be twisted. In Oedipus Rex it was unusual
that someone would get put up for adoption then eventually kill their real dad, and then get married
to their real mom and have kids with them. This twisted plot made readers more interested in what
was going to happen next. Moreover, in Hamlet during the plot was becoming twisted when Hamlet
started seeing his father as a ghost, and when his mother marries Claudius so quickly, then when
Hamlet made out with his own mother. Although the twisted plot is sometimes hard to follow it
makes the reader inquisitive what is going on in the play. In Long Day's Journey Into Night, the
strange family addiction to drugs and alcohol consumption makes the reader on edge on what is
going to happen next to the family. Reading these stories make sense as a group because they all
have that "twisted plot" by authors incorporating these twisted plots it makes the read more
interesting rather than boring. Learning about twisted plots can help students become more unique
writers so they take risks outside of writing a normal cliche

Homecoming Week Essay
Homecoming
Students strut through the hall looking as if they are from another planet. A sea of bright blue flood

memorable times of high school. Students are able step out of their comfort zone; whether that is by
dressing in flamboyant costumes, or meeting new people during Edgewood in the Community. No
matter which event is your favorite, homecoming week is an enjoyable and memorable time for all.
The week starts off with its annual homecoming week mass. As students and faculty gather, the gym
feels as if it is bursting at the seams with excitement to finally start the festivities. Seniors involved
in powderpuff were so excited to begin the week, that they arrived at school before the sun rose.
Shoes were soaked with dew, and shirts were dripping with sweat as the battle for the championship
continued. Braids, bows, and bruises can best describe the competitive flag–football league. As the
sun slowly filled the sky with its warm rays, students filtered into school wearing their best rodeo–
attire. Cowboy boots clunked down the stairs, country music blasted outside of classrooms, and
plaid shirts were sported by almost everyone. During lunch mods, students were entertained with
sign painting. An overwhelming number of people gathered around a table with art supplies, almost
as if they were thirsty animals at a watering hole. Orange, green, purple, and blue paint cascaded

Freddie Mercury is the lead singer for the band Queen, Queen is one of the many bands that sing

There are many lyrics in the song to prove this, one being " Don't stop me now ( cause I'm having a

shooting star leaping through the sky"(Don't stop me now). Both of these parts have meaning that
can be connected to not being able to be put down. When it comes to happiness Don't stop me now
is a great example but there are many more songs that also do. One of these songs is A hard day's
night by the Beatles. There are many parts of the song that can be connected but the best one is "
when I'm home everything seems to be right"(Hard day's night). Another song is Good day in hell
by the eagles. One of the best examples in the song is "oh well it's been a good day in hell"(Good
day in hell). One last great song is Happy by Pharrell Williams. This song has a endless amount of
examples to be used, although the best one is " here comes bad news, talking this and that (yeah).
Well give me all you got, don't hold back (yeah). Well, I should probably warn ya, I'll be just

The Separation Of Family

  • 1. The Separation Of Family his statement, he admits that "No respect was shown..." Indeed no respect was shown. Separating families for the desire of money may be looked at as corrupt. No shame was brought to those capturing and destroying family bonds. Instead, the ones in shame were the ones in captive. Going further into the late 1700's and early 1800's, Separation of family continued. A young boy by the name of Frederick Douglass did not have the constant love and warmth of a mother throughout his developing life. At the time, captive African were now slaves. Slaves were expected to work hard and long hours each day or physical punishments may happen. Due to Douglas's mother being sold away to another plantation, "She made her journeys to see me in the night, traveling ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. How Did The Beatles Influence American Culture And... The Beatles The Beatles were an English rock band formed by 4 teenage boys in 1960. The Beatles became the most influential musical rock act of the era. They experimented with many music genres and still till this day are considered the forefathers of today's boy bands. With Beatlemania and the beginning of the "British Invasion" in the United States, they revolutionized music. The band consisted of four members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison & at first Stuart Sutcliffe. When Stuart left the band to go to art school, he was replaced by Ringo Starr as the band's bassist. . The band at first called their selves the Blackjacks, then changed to the Quarrymen, Then Stewart suggested Beatals. As a tribute to singer Buddy Holly and The Crickets. They went shortly as the Silver Beatles until in the end of the same year, then stayed with the name The Beatles for good. • 5. `` Night Women `` By Edwidge Danticat And The Story Called... The story called "Night Women" by Edwidge Danticat and the story called "The Awakening" by Crystal Wilkinson portray womanhood in different ways. However, both stories are very interesting and convey powerful ideas to the readers. Although the portrayal of womanhood is different, they share some similarities. To start with, I would like to express my thoughts about "Night Women", which has become one of my favorite stories due to its unique language, exquisite metaphors, and powerful message. It is about the life and hard times of any single mother who has to do whatever possible to provide a means for their family because her son's father decided to "disappear with the nights shadows a long time ago." It shows different feelings, which are mixed, and some of these feelings are the innocence of a child as well as the care and love of a mother through hard work, sacrifice, and dedication. She was a prostitute, a job that is very hard for any woman, but most of them depend on it in order to succeed and make money to cover their costs of living. In this story, the woman is portrayed as person who doesn't depend on a man to succeed and give a good life to her kid. She was alone, she didn't have the company of her mother either; but she was facing the challenges that the life put on her way, showing that women have the same strength, power, and ability to achieve success as men. I think that Danticat portrays the woman in that way in order to make ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These two characters are similar in failure, they never made a named for themselves or lived up to their father's expectations. Certain people who have read or will read The Death of a Salesman as well as Long Day's Journey into Night, will say that the only similarity to these two characters is that they didn't lived up to their father's expectations and those people are right but theirs more to it. Yes, they are similar in failure, but they are also similar in how they became who they are. They are similar in what made them, or the events that lead them to this point in their lives. The events that lead these two men to become who they are, started at an early age in they're life. Biff Loman around his high school years, everything was going great for him, nothing was the matter and he had his father's trusts as well as his father belief. This all changed when "Biff discovered that Willy has a mistress, which strips him of faith in Willy" ("Death of a Salesman": A Symposium). From that point on Biff lost all respect for his father. Biff not only lost respect for his father but also lost the will to continue his schoolwork. • 9. Personal Narrative: A Tale Of Two Monsters Sleep, for a lucky few, is a respite, the soothing feeling of resting your bones after a long day's work. But not for me. For me, night was the dreaded time when monsters that were invisible in the daylight decided to come forth once more. But these monsters were not like those in horror films – with blood–stained fangs and black capes, pale skin and a desire to kill, lurking behind every door and crouched in every corner, waiting for an opportunity to pounce. No, these monsters were of a different breed altogether, so much worse simply because they were in my head. Closing my eyes would not help and neither would filling my ears with all the wax in the world. It would only make the images burn that much brighter and the screams that much ... The United Artists was a New York based company that opened in London through the European division in 1961. The company filmed 4 to 5 low budgets films, profiting fewer than 200,000 Euros yearly. Despite the earnings, UA was able to successfully earn its fame by two British films including, Dr. No and Tom Jones in 1962, at $30 to 40 million through the box office. A Hard Day's Night made its successful turn when the film was produced, selling at 1500 to 1800 prints. The musical made a fortune at $1.3 million within the first week and $5.8 million on the 6th week of popularity. Even though the film was praised by the public because of its production, the film also received an extensive amount of criticism from British, American, and international critics, such as, the French. Richard Lester was accused of basing the film on French nouvelle vague. Although Lester incorporated some of the French influence, the film was not an independent film–maker, like the style of the French. Lester was one of the youngest directors in the film industry at an astounding age of 31. Because of his age, he was able to connect to the youthful audience and create a film that was able to entertain both the youthful teenagers and respectable adult viewers. • 15. The Beatles: The Biggest Media Sensation in the United... It's no secret that The Beatles were the biggest media sensation in the United States when they made their American debut. Upon their arrival, the Beatles wore sharply tailored suits and cast themselves as adorable, accessible teen heartthrobs. But by the end of the decade, they had grown out of the suits and moptops and into a mature, individual image and unique sound. This paper will look at and discuss this change and how their evolution was reflected in the U.S. media. Introducing...The B–E–A–T–T–L–E–S! Before their big debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in February 1964, The Beatles had tried and actually failed to become known in the United States. Released under very small, unknown record labels, "Please Please Me" and "From Me to You" were first played on American radio in February 1963. From a group whose name was misspelled B–E–A–T–T–L–E–S; "Please Please Me" failed miserably with the second single, "From Me to You" not doing much better. Before 1964, very few British performers had made a dent in the U.S. music charts, so at the time, it wasn't all that surprising that when given the choice to play an unknown British band or an American hitmaker's version, most DJs chose the latter. According to Beatles historian Bruce Spizer, the reason British bands had such a difficult time in the American music industry was the fact that during the 1960s, especially the early 1960s, the United States was by no means "living in a global community" and during this time Britain ... In Marele Day's novel, she utilises this subversion of women to challenge society's perception of gender stereotypes. Day introduces Claudia Valentine as the conventional tough, masculine hard–boiled detective "the black suit was hanging in the wardrobe neatly pressed", however, later reveals her to be a woman, and the 'blond' a male one night stand. Thus, challenging the idea that women are subpar to men by displaying women as strong, capable of doing the work of a man, but also managing to thrive in a harsh setting where women are not usually found. • 22. Significance of Fog in Long Day's Journey into Night... Long Days Journey: The Significance of Fog (8) A Long Day's Journey Into Night, by Eugene O'Neill, is a deeply autobiographical play. His life was rampant with confusion and addictions in his family. Each character in this play has a profound resemblance, and draws parallels and connections with a member of his own family. The long journey that the title of the play refers to is a journey into his past. Fog is a recurring metaphor in the play; it is a physical presence even before it becomes a crucial symbol of the family's impenetrable confusion. It is referred to in the text as well as stage directions in this play. It sets the mood for the play in all its somber hues. He uses the fog outside the house as an atmospheric element that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There's no fog in the harbor. I'm sure the spell of it we've had is over" (O'Neill 736). The introductory image establishes the fog as both the intermediary and a symbol of Mary's addiction. The fog is easily identifiable as Mary's morphine high, representative of her cloudy mental state. Mary sinks back into her addiction as the night falls and slowly regresses further away from reality and her family. The fog signifies the state of mind that she is in. Fog has a dense and opaque quality that creates low visibility and blocks out the sun. The fog described in the stage directions is "...as a white curtain drawn down outside the windows" (O'Neill 773). Mary tells Cathleen how she loves the fog, which can be interpreted as her love for the morphine that removes her from any type of coherence. Mary was on a path to recovery and now has slowly lapsed into her state of addiction once again. She likes this state because " It hides you from the world and the world from you. No one can find or touch you any more" (O'Neill 773). For Mary, this fog is representative as an alternative or refuge from reality. Her relapse into addition causes clouds her judgment and impairs her sight. She can hide herself in the fog so that her family can be oblivious to her addiction. "Mary, however, is not alone among the "fog people" – the three men also have their reasons for withdrawing into night" (Brustein 1021). "Witty, wryly humorous and fast–paced, "The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender" is a thriller with a twist which brilliantly evokes the sleaze below the surface of the city's glittering faade". Is this what the novel is about? Marele Day's novel, "The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender" explores a large scope of issues related to crime and mystery writing. The use of simple language, symbolism, clever wit and a certain sense of satirical mockery all contribute to composing this witty, wryly humorous and fast paced novel. Through the way in which Day portrays the protagonist, Claudia Valentine, she challenges the stereotypes and ideas set in the readers' minds, in relation to gender issues. Day also succeeds to ruthlessly unmask ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She shows a female character doing what previously only men had done; directly committing herself to the criminal underworld, walking dangerous streets at night, boldly trespassing into perilous areas and defending herself– all the things that only men would do in conventional versions of the genre. On the very first page, Day introduces this concept of ironic mockery by creating confusion as to the gender of the character. A tough voice that fills the requirements of hard–boiled school men is established, and only after turning the page does the reader realize that the terribly hung–over narrator is a female private–eye and the blonde in the bed is a good–looking male. The novel is set in Sydney. Day represents the city form two different views. One is Claudia's safe, sheltered Sydneyof innocent childhood, "Cars sat in the sun silently absorbing the heat, reminding me of childhood summers. Days at the beach and before you went home all the doors of the car would be flung open and the heat that rushed out nearly knocked you over." When I heard the Beatles, I said, 'That's what I want to do!'" (Quotes 2). Billy Joel expresses how he, and other musicians felt towards the British Invasion, and one of the bands leading the invasion were The Beatles. In the early to mid 1960's The Beatles ruled the music charts in a phenomenon only known as Beatlemania. After 1966 a new Beatle style was born, one that defied the standards that they originally set. The Beatles revolutionized music, society, and created a paragon for future musicians to follow. The Beatles were important figures in American History because the changed the standards of music and influenced society into new, deeper ways of thinking and interpreting music. Even though ... John was impressed that Paul knew more than three chords and how to tune a guitar, while Paul was impressed at John's energetic performance skills. Paul knew a lead guitarist from school who he met on the school bus, George Harrison. The band consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe, and drummer Pete Best. The band was successful in and around Liverpool and went to Hamburg, Germany to play in nightclubs, as many other bands did. Then known as The Beatles, the band played night after night in German clubs. Eventually the band was selected to play on Tony Sheridan's "My Bonnie." • 28. Analysis Of The Film ' Daisies ' The 1966 Czechoslovakian film Daisies was released two years before what was known as the Prague Spring, where a reformist Czech leader loosened up restrictions in the Communist dominated nation. The result was the 1968 invasion led by the Soviet Union that crushed this little rebellion and firmly re–established Soviet control of the nation (Encyclopaedia Britannica). That puts a context on this film and gives some reason to the madness that the film portrays of two young women who decide to spend the day being "bad," which means doing things that are against the grain of normal society. Nothing criminal happens with the girls (well, maybe some trespassing and stealing some farmer's crops) but the point is that they want to do things that aren't really normal for the day. These two girls, both named Maria, are probably about twenty years old or so, and therefore would have been born immediately after the end of World War II. Though their youth would have shielded them a bit, it was a time of great transition for the country as it was under Nazi occupation first before being taken over and held by the Soviet Union. They probably would have grown up hearing about the great freedoms that their parents experienced before the war when they were a free nation and as a result, that seed would have grown within their minds that they too wanted that freedom of expression denied to them under the "Worker's Paradise" of Soviet Communism. So, what were the girls ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. The Face Of Lennon By John Lennon The Face of Lennon Help! Help! Help! The Beatles faced plenty of highs and plenty of lows throughout their careers, and the transition between each stage was always shaky and lined with turmoil. Perhaps the most evident of these transitions was between the years of 1964 and 1965. In this period, songs from A Hard Day's Night and Help! clearly show that John Lennon, a member of the group since the very beginning, was facing difficult, emotional times. These three songs speak volumes for the trouble that Lennon was going experiencing: "You Can't Do That", "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", and "It's Only Love". The first of these songs is the one that helps to set the stage for next two: "You Can't Do That". Released as a part of the album A Hard Day's Night in 1964, this song is a product of Lennon's surroundings more than a product from Lennon himself. Having first touched down in the United States on February 7, 1964, John fell in love with it all. Since Rock and Roll was on its last leg in the States, the Beatles were welcomed with excitement and a wave of energy. Despite only having stayed until February 22, Lennon was moved by the momentum the United States gave them. Only three days later, the Beatles went on to record "You Can't Do That" on February 25. Written by the ever impressionable John, this song clearly reflects the burst of energy brought about from the trip to the States and his love for American Rock. On average, I make less than 2 dollars a day which roughly equates to approximately 700 dollars annually. This means that I cannot afford a house, a car, or any of those luxuries. On a regular day, I would wake up and find some work, most of the time I pick up cans and take them to a recycling center for a miniscule amount of money. After that, I look through the trash cans in order to find resources that people throw away carelessly. I also do subsistence farming to provide food for me and my family. • 34. Acquainted With The Night Poetic Devices In "Acquainted with the Night," by Robert Frost, a first person narrator wanders out of the night and then back again. During his dark and dim travels the man stops to listen to a cry from a distance. After his pause, the man continues on his journey, indifferent about the night. "Acquainted with the Night" contains many different poetic devices that help the continuity and theme flourish. Since this poem is a terza rima, it allows the reader to quickly and smoothly operate through the poem. The terza rima rhyme scheme offers a steady rhythm for the reader to follow along. Furthermore, the authors word choice of "saddest city lane," and "dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain," help to convey a facade of melancholiness and depression. However, lines like, "I have walked out in rain–– and back in rain," ultimately portray the underlying message of the poem. This poem resonates deeply with me because it offers a different perspective to any challenges and hard times a person can face. Throughout my sophomore and junior year of high school, my attitude towards life was not optimistic. I grew towards pessimism, and would simply go through my days waiting, begging for the day to be over. I, like the narrator, had "out walked the furthest city light." I can remember just sitting through one of Coach Day's math classes and closing my eyes, envisioning the 2:55 p.m announcements coming on, and knowing that I would be able to go home. ... • 36. How the Music Industry Utilized Film to Help Create the... With all the social, political and cultural changes occurring in the 1960s, youth culture was embracing the ideologies of rebellion and counterculture. The Folk music of the sixties was giving way to the new Rock revolution and with this came the iconic Rock Rebel. The Rock Rebel is a romanticized existential figure who revolts against social conventions in a quest to find value or a sense of freedom beyond the pre–existing conforms of society. (Camus; 1967) Through analysing, in a sociological context, the way the music industry utilized film to help create or reinvent star image of Rock icons The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, we can see how the signifier of the Rock Rebel has evolved with the developing Rock culture. (Dyer; 1979:1) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (1997:24) For example, George shows his rebel streak against traditional fashion when he speaks against the choices of 'professional trendsetter,' stating: "You mean that posh bird who gets everything wrong?" Ringo in an interview refuses to be defined and as such when asked "Are you a Mod or a Rocker?" he replies "I'm a mocker." Similarly John also makes quick witted remarks to reporters such as: "How did you find America?" "Turned left at Greenland." While Paul's rebellious side is evident in the train scene when a fellow passenger tries to take away their music, "Yeah, but we want to hear it, and there's more of us than you. We're a community, like, a majority vote. Up the workers and all that stuff!" While it was HDN that helped merge The Beatles' youth audience with a more adult crowd, thanks to the mature verite style aesthesis, it was the dramatised film Help! (1965) that fully actualized their Rock rebel personas in correspondence with Laurence Grossberg's notions of consumerism and mobility in relation to Rebel image. (Grossberg; 1992) While there were several scenes of transport and mobility shown in HDN, such as the train scene, it lacked the overindulgence of commercialism that embodies the Grossberg's Rocker; they were the working–class 'boys next door' who became famous, yet kept their iconic polished image of the average man. As unfortunate as it is, there a nowadays many efforts that are trying to maintain poaching to a levels of absolute 0. The Concept of Time in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night The pre–Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus said in his theory of the Universal Flux that "everything flows and nothing abides; everything gives way and nothing stays fixed. You cannot step twice into the same river, for other waters and yet others go ever flowing on... Time is a child moving counters in a game." (Allen 103) And so it is with the characters in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night. Time is little more than a game in which they move as checkers, if not pawns. Eugene O'Neill's life helped to create the phenomenal writer he was because of his personal experiences. In Eugene O'Neill's play, Long Day's Journey into Night, the characterization of Mary Tyrone demonstrates a sense of loss through her loneliness, addiction and unconditional love for her family. The sense of loss in the Tyrone household is supported by the constant reminder of Mary's loneliness and isolation. During her drug induced hallucinations, Mary returns to a life that she was happier in; when she was younger and only had one child, Jamie. She is completely isolated from her family and the rest of her community. Being a morphine addict, Mary skips many of the family meals complaining that she is not hungry. Skipping daily meals, which symbolize communion in a family, isolates her from the family. Mary moans about the past and her happy life by articulating how their summer house is not a real home because she is always lonely, "In a real home one is never lonely. • 64. Naturalism In Long Day's Journey Into The Night The trope of naturalism in western theater have readdressed the form of dramatic arts from the royal narrative and biblical tales to stories of commoners that the audience can actually relate to. Naturalism also allows the distinction of tragedy and comedy to dissipate by developing a plot that focuses on a day–to–day occurrence. This convention is represented by playwrights who are writing in a more colloquial voice with stories about the middle–class –or working–class, and their struggles. Naturalism gave birth to the works of Eugene O'Neill and Edward Albee that pushes the nuance of dysfunctionality and addiction to its extreme in works such as Long Day's Journey Into The Night and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. The two playwrights zoom in towards a domestic issue that were driven a lot by each character's desire for happiness and the disappointment that are not being expressed appropriately that drove them to an addiction as form of escape from the reality. The two plays place a tragic maternal figure who escapes their unachievable idea of happiness through a facade of lies in the forefront of the narrative. In Long Day's Journey Into The Night, Mary Tyrone's ideal happiness comes from her sense of nostalgia and what defined her happiness when she married Tyrone while Martha's imaginary son and her inability to face the reality of a dull life of being married to a university professor are what became of her tragic downfall at the end of Who's Afraid of Virginia ... The tune was all too familiar, it brought back chilling memories from when her mom was still with her. Memories flooded her conscious, it was overwhelming and taking over her head. She stood idle, trying to gather her thoughts, but the music continues to get louder. Feeling neurotic, she bursts into tears and grips her head tight, trying to stop the music. The tune comes to an end at last and her head isn't clouded with haunting thoughts. Michelle walks as fast as she can down the alley to avoid another incident, she is almost running until she spots her apartment from behind a few trees. She hurries into the building and gets on the elevator. She wasn't alone on the elevator, she stood silent with an older man; he appeared to be in his 70's, he was old and frail, with an expression that said he wanted to be anywhere else at that moment. Michelle was too scared to face the man, so she kept her head down, focusing on nothing more than the coffee stains on the peeling floor. "You better keep your head, little girl. Or I won't know where I am," the old man said in a cynical, raspy voice. Michelle froze in terror, fearing if she moved or said a word the man would do something. She stood there silent, she keeps her head down as she tries not to breathe heavily when he says, "You better run for your life, little girl. Hide your head in the sand little ... • 72. Legend Day Character Analysis In Legend, the main character Day, quite similarly carries the same characteristic as Boxer does, mentioned before. In Legend, Day is known as a "criminal," to the Republic but when being a reader of the book you can easily see the sympathetic, kind person he is, much like Boxer. In the novel, Day risks being caught, tortured and killed to go back to his family house and spy on his family and make sure they're doing okay and they have what they need to get by, we also see this very early in the book to give you an image of who Day actually is and what he is willing to risk for loved ones: "I [Day] shake my head. 'One night a week, remember? Just let me check up on them [family] one night a week.' 'Yeah, you've been coming here every night this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He sticks with something he starts, and sticks with what he believes in. Boxer kept all the animals working on the windmill, motivated them and ended up becoming the main builder of the windmill. Boxer was brainwashed into believing this windmill would be revolutionary and help the farm immensely so he ended up dedicating most of his time and himself towards the building of the windmill: "Nothing could have been achieved without Boxer, whose strength seemed equal to that of all the rest of the animals put together. When the boulder began to slip and the animals cried out in despair at finding themselves dragged down the hill, it was always Boxer who strained himself against the rope and brought the boulder to a stop. To see him toiling up the slope inch by inch, his breath coming fast, the tips of his hoofs clawing at the ground and his great sides matted with sweat filled everyone with admiration. Clover warned him sometimes to be careful not to overstrain himself, but Boxer would never listen to her. His two slogans 'Napoleon is always right', seemed to have a sufficient answer to all his problems. He had made arrangements with the cockerel to call him three–quarters of an hour earlier in the mornings instead of half an hour. And in his spare moments, of which there were not many nowadays, he would go alone to the quarry, collect a load of broken stone and drag it down to the site of the windmill unassisted." ... After reading numerous plays it led to a discussion. Why did Mrs.Seibert actually make us read these plays? Although each play has a different title, theses plays have much in common with each other. Oedipus Rex, by Sophocles, Hamlet by William Shakespeare, and Long Day's Journey Into Night were three of the plays we read in class. Although it was apparent that these plays were different, but however, reflecting back to these plays it makes sense why we read them together. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While reading Oedipus Rex my first initial reaction was wow this play is strange, but however, when I started reading the other plays like Hamlet and Long Day's Journey into Night it started becoming more normal that most of the plot seemed to be twisted. In Oedipus Rex it was unusual that someone would get put up for adoption then eventually kill their real dad, and then get married to their real mom and have kids with them. This twisted plot made readers more interested in what was going to happen next. Moreover, in Hamlet during the plot was becoming twisted when Hamlet started seeing his father as a ghost, and when his mother marries Claudius so quickly, then when Hamlet made out with his own mother. Although the twisted plot is sometimes hard to follow it makes the reader inquisitive what is going on in the play. In Long Day's Journey Into Night, the strange family addiction to drugs and alcohol consumption makes the reader on edge on what is going to happen next to the family. Reading these stories make sense as a group because they all have that "twisted plot" by authors incorporating these twisted plots it makes the read more interesting rather than boring. Learning about twisted plots can help students become more unique writers so they take risks outside of writing a normal cliche ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Homecoming week is among the most memorable times of high school. Students are able step out of their comfort zone; whether that is by dressing in flamboyant costumes, or meeting new people during Edgewood in the Community. As the sun slowly filled the sky with its warm rays, students filtered into school wearing their best rodeo– attire. Cowboy boots clunked down the stairs, country music blasted outside of classrooms, and plaid shirts were sported by almost everyone. During lunch mods, students were entertained with sign painting. An overwhelming number of people gathered around a table with art supplies, almost as if they were thirsty animals at a watering hole. Orange, green, purple, and blue paint cascaded over the ...
