1. Analysis of Previous Student Music Video
“Do No Wrong”
I went onto Longroadmedia.com to find other student music
videos that I could analyse. I chose this song because it is similar
to the style of our song. When watching the video, I was drawn
into the video because of the fast motion of the cars that was
shown at 0:12 seconds. The motion of the cars goes well with
the tempo of the song and the style of the instrumental at the
beginning.
The effect of having a split screen,
allows the audience to be at 3
different places at the same time. It
allows the audience to see the
narrative alongside the instruments
being played. It also looks effective
how they have used different camera
angles and shots in each spilt screen.
The lighting is quite dark, and makes
the video look quite gloomy which
could go with the song.
In my opinion, the pace of the editing is quite slow.
Eventhough the tempo is slow, the editing doesn’t go with it
as the editing is twice as slower than the tempo of the song.
The video then becomes abit boring as we are seeing the
same split screen throughout the whole video. Throughout
the song, the artist isn’t seen singing along to the song. I
think it would have been better if they sang some parts of
the song, to establish who the artist is.
As a whole, the video looks very effective with the split
screen; however, it would have been better if they paced up
the whole video.
“She’s An Eyeful on the Alley”
I thought this music video was quite good because the action that was taking place on screen
matched the tempo of the music. The music video also featured a variety of shots such as
close up of the artists face and a two-shot of both the band members.
2. The camera was hand held which gave a good effect as the genre was ‘rock’ and therefore
gave the effect of ‘uneasiness’. As well as the band playing, there was also another narrative
of one of the band members meeting a girl on the stairs and also a group of people dancing
on the top of a building, making out and getting into little fights.
These hectic scenes went well with the genre because it seemed like there was a lot going
on.
The music video also featured a variety of locations such as the elevator, stairs and the top
of a building. This can also represent the ‘madness’ of the band because the video seems to
be ‘all over the place’. The use of special effects such as the exit sign going across the screen,
the CCTV and the lights emerging on screen also gave the video as a whole a fun and
different aspect
The props which they used such as the guitar went with the song and genre choice as there
was guitars playing in the actual song.
I think it would have been better if they had a better use of costumes and also have the
artists sing the song in sync with the music.
Overall I think this was a good music video as it met most of the genre’s needs. It showed
performance as well as narrative and had a great use of different camera shots and angles.
