In the novel Empire Rising, Michael Briody is a confident, idealistic ironworker from Greenwich
Village Ireland. Originally a soldier fighting in the Civil War, Briody escaped prison camp and came
to America to start a new life in the Bronx. Due to the hardships he faced in Ireland and trying to get
a job in America, Briody now carries an immense love for the work he does on the Empire State
Building. The job he does with the rest of the rivet crew is one of the only things that distracts him
from the guilt of being a hitman. His other diversion is the relationship he pursues with Grace
Masterson, another Irish immigrant who lives on a houseboat. Briody's strong feelings for Grace are
ultimately what lead to his potentially avoidable demise.
The personality traits that Briody carries remain the same throughout the novel, even when he is
faced with hardships. He can only be described as a man of dedication and loyalty who trusts his

The second my feet lifted off the soap–caked floor, I felt different. The skin on my neck was
tingling, adrenaline was racing through my body, and my bones were engaged in a newfound

It was amazing! When we went to the gift shop of the building, there was a desk that you could take
a picture in, as if you were on the Today Show. We got a few items there, but also got to take a
picture by the ice skating rink there, which was also fun. The flight back was bumpier than the first
one, and this flight was going to Chicago first, and then Kansas. But I still managed to take my mind
off with reading and listening to music. I even started crying over my book, because I was so

the front seats like we did on the first few flights, so it was a little cramped. But at least we made it

just couldn't stay awake any longer. At least I was back home, and finally got to have a good night's
sleep in my comfy bed. My trip to New York City was one of the best trips I have had in a long time.

Observation Paper (Empire State Building)
The Empire State Building is a skyscraper located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Its
construction began on March 17, 1930, and was completed on April 11, 1931. John Jacob Raskob,
the creator of General Motors, wanted a building that would have been taller than Walter Chrysler's
building. He went to William Lamb, someone who was a partner at the architectural firm of Shreve,
Lamb, and Harmon and he explains to him his dream of a skyscraper that would exceed the Chrysler
Building. When the Empire State Building was being made, there were only two criteria that were
needed to be followed during the construction: the first one was that it must resemble a pencil. The
second criteria were that it must soar higher than any other structure in the world. Although the
building had many setbacks during the construction of it the building ended up finishing 45 days
ahead of schedule and on top of that the building ended up being $5 million dollars under budget.
The Empire State Building was then viewed as a new symbol of what felt like a New America.
During the 1920s and the 1930s, the United States was being split from an old style of rural
traditions and eventually was beginning to make modern urban traditions. When the Empire State
Building was being built, it began to fuel the power and wealth of the clients who were children of
immigrants, this then served as a legitimacy status began to represent the face of the

Design issues As like any other building the design of the Empire State building is prone to bad
design. A bad design could pose a major risk as any miscalculation or oversight would mean that its
structure may not be able to handle the stress and enormous loads. Design may show low probability
but will have very high impact if the building comes crashing down. The Empire State Building was
the first commercial construction project to employ the technique of fast–track construction, a
commonplace approach today but very new in the early 20th Century. This technique consists of
starting the construction process before the designs are fully completed in order to reduce delays and
inflation costs. In this case, it was imperative to use the fast–track construction method to win the
race for the tallest building (2). Force majeure By definition, force majeure is a "superior force",
also known as cas fortuit (French) or casus fortuitus (Latin) "chance occurrence, unavoidable
accident" (11). Force majeure may be repeated heavy hail, or an earthquake, or a hurricane. The
building is intended to stand for some years should be able to meet these challenges. A flexible
structure may avoid destruction in an earthquake, while a more solid building with good masonry
would be destroyed. Earthquakes can also result in foundation problems when moist filled land

I grew up in a little, one red light town, where we have one festival a year that celebrates
blueberries, where playing in the mud is not an unusual thing, and where being barefoot is almost
normal. I live in the country. The country is my home. So, to think that I would ever end up on a
three week stay in a place where the horns never stop honking, the sirens never ceased to exist, and
the people are within arms distance all around you, would be crazy. I mean going to the "Big
Apple", it is an insane idea. The only thing around here that's big is our barns. I believe that going to
New York City was the best and worst experience of my life. The plane ride was an experience that I
definitely enjoyed. It was my first time on a plane and, it just makes sense because you get to a place
in half the time and, it's also fun. The JFK airport is a whole experience in itself. The airport is a
mall, a restaurant, a spa, a liquor store, and many other things all in one. Stepping out into the streets
of New York is like stepping into altered universe. The horns are screamed in your ear, the people
are shuffling across the street before the orange hand comes up to tell them to stop walking (I felt
more like a pack mule crossing the street with all the luggage I was carrying), and every one was
frantically searching for the taxi they just called. When you are riding in the taxi you can try to look
out the windows to see the tops of the buildings, but your eyes will never reach the top of
