Speech-Language Pathology
Speech–Language Pathology has been around since about the 1940's. It is traced back to after World
War II when thousands of young servicemen and women returned with noise–induced hearing loss.
The United States Government responded by creating hearing rehabilitation programs at the military
hospitals where hearing aid procedures were standardized across the country. So what exactly is
Speech–Language Pathology? Have there been many Speech Pathology developments over the
years, and who are some of the key players? Yes, due to an increase in the need for new
advancements, there have been many new developments over the years. During the 1950's–60's,
hearing programs emerged greatly in community speech and hearing centers geared to aural
rehabilitation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A thirty year Speech–Language Pathologist Shannon Piercy has seen the way her clients are treated
differently over time as technology grows. She explains that back in the day, they did a lot of games,
cards, workbooks and a lot of printed material with the clients. She says that they really did not have
a lot of special things so they had to make most of it up. With all the new advances in the field of
speech–language pathology she says that "we now have computers, iPads and iPhones that have the
software already loaded so we don't have to come up with the games on our own. It makes it much
easier to come up with a specific plan for each child." (Piercey olemissjournalism) A mother of a
four year old speech student explains how she has seen such a dramatic difference in her son's
ability to communicate because of these new advances in technology. She explains "when he began
early intervention at 18 months old, he was diagnosed with a severe expressive language delay.
Thanks in part to the use of technology in therapy, at four years old, his language skills are now
equivalent to his age–level peers." (Hall

A Career In Speech-Language Pathology
As a child, I was faced with a lot of adversity. My grandmother raised my brothers and me. We lived
on government assistance with little money and no car for transportation for extracurricular
activities. The hardships we faced compelled me at a young age to stay in school, go to college, and
make something of myself because I did not want to live a life limiting my dreams and
opportunities. Throughout my academic career, there was not a specific moment that solidified my
desire to pursue a profession in Speech– Language Pathology (SLP); instead, there were numerous. I
initially became interested in this profession after learning how a child's dysfluency was able to
significantly improve. The gradual process of a client making substantial improvements ... Show

I put my best effort into everything that I do because I believe that a person's work reflects who they
are as an individual, thus, I strive to ensure that my work is a true representation of who I am. The
challenges and obstacles that I have endured and overcome have helped build my character of being
a resilient individual that is willing to do whatever it takes to pursue my dreams. I can honestly say
adversity transformed me into the strong–minded person I am today. I do not take anything for
granted because I know what it feels like to not have much. I do everything with a purpose and the
desire to make a better life for myself so I work hard to achieve all of my goals. I want to be a
speech pathologist that delivers and promotes the highest professional standards in a variety of
clinical educational settings across a culturally and linguistically diverse client population.
Ultimately, I know that if given the chance to obtain a Master's of Science in Speech–Language
Pathology at the University of West Georgia, I am confident in my ability to be a devoted student
who is eager and willing to learn how to work closely with faculty and staff to acquire the necessary
skills and knowledge to effectively assess a patient and be a remarkable speech

Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology And Deaf Studies
I am a Speech–Language Pathology/Audiology and Deaf Studies combined major. Throughout
middle and high school I was fortunate enough to be able to volunteer in elementary school
classrooms. Many times, I worked in the second grade special education classrooms. This
experience engrained in my mind what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My favorite part of
volunteering was helping the children with special needs. Many of these children were isolated from
their classmates as a result of what was described to me then as a disability. As I got to know a little
bit about these children I saw more and more that the label "disabled" that society places upon these
children was not applicable. Deafness is a difference, not a disability. Growing

Speech Language Pathology Assistant
After practicing for over twenty years as a Speech Language Pathology Assistant, I have gained
many skills and qualifications. I am a motivated self–starter, and licensed to practice in Idaho and
Oregon. Working as an SLP–A has allowed me to be well versed in IDEA, and special education
programs. My knowledge and proficiency have enabled me to perform therapy, follow directions,
maintain daily notes, and assist with progress notes. I have been involved in various speech
screenings in the schools. My experience is with a multitude of supervisors working with clients
from pre–kindergarten to geriatric, both in group sessions and 1:1. In these sessions I have worked

Speech Pathologist Observation
As an eight year old student, I entered the annual science fair at school. The subject I chose to
observe and research for my project was the human vocal chords. Collectively, my mom, a speech
pathologist, and I sat down and watched videos that she had of her own vocal chords being activated
and used for communication through speech and language. I was intrigued by the way that they
worked and the way they were used to enable communication. My mom taught me about her work
as a speech pathologist and how she had studied the vocal chords specifically to help her with the
ability to train others who had speech and language impairments and communication disabilities. It
was through my research and careful observation of the way that the vocal ... Show more content on

Through speech pathology, people are reached and shown compassion who are typically considered
outcasts in society. SLPs work with individuals who are struggling with various sets of problems
and help to solve those problems through undivided attention and spirits of patience and willingness
to aid people with speech, language, and mental impairments. I believe this would be a good career
fit for me due to my heart for people and my teaching spirit. My mom's perspective of me pursuing
a career as an SLP is that it would be a good fit due to my kind and gentle spirit and conduciveness
with working with struggling individuals. I also have an immediate family legacy of multiple speech
pathologists that work in both the medical and educational fields which increases my knowledge and
familiarity with the career. While I believe that speech pathology would ultimately be a good fit for
me, I tend to struggle with patience, a key component of working as an SLP, which is a challenge
that I would have to work to overcome in order fulfill my role as a speech pathologist. The career of
speech pathology offers many opportunities in a variety of different settings. For those who are
willing to tackle the challenge of advanced education and have a passion for working with others,

The Speech-Language Pathology Strategic Planning Committee
Over the past year, I have been involved in several committees at the department and college levels.
When I began my service at UDC, I was a member of the Faculty Senate for two years. This allowed
me to learn the university culture and the importance of shared governance. Thereafter, the
committees in which I volunteered to serve were, not only interdisciplinary and collaborative, but
were those that served the needs of students. For example, in the past, I served as a member of the
College of Arts and Sciences Grievance Committee which met as needed to resolve
instructor/student conflicts. My colleagues on the Committee were representatives of every division
in the College. The challenge of meeting the student's needs as well as being ... Show more content

The charge of this committee was to make recommendations regarding the programs mission,
vision, strategic initiatives, curricular changes and/or adjustments. Additionally, the SPC identifies
critical strategic issues facing the program and provides recommendations of alternative strategic
options. Even though, we all must remain current with trends in the profession, advances in
evidence–based practices, and the needs of all stakeholders of speech–language pathology, it falls to
the SPC to provide recommendations relative to those market trends, the needs of the community
program and making the program more viable and competitive than it is presently. Therefore, the
SPC is mandated to develop measureable strategic goals for development and implementation for
five–year interim periods. In the beginning of the academic year, the SPC met with faculty and staff
to review the current strategic plan and to map out potential changes and future goals that the SPC
will formulate. As a former SLP program director, I am well familiar with past goals of the program
(since I drafted them), including curricular changes, teaching and employment needs as well as
needs of the students as they progress through their matriculation. Additionally, as a former program
director I managed the elimination of the undergraduate division of the program and wrote a
monograph recommending a doctoral program in speech–language pathology to be created once the
university forms an infrastructure to accommodate such a program. As always, the strategic plan is
student–driven. Those goals that ensure students are ready to take the board examination (PRAXIS),
are ready for employment and patient engagement are the primary concerns of the SCP. As a former
coordinator/program director and current associate professor, researcher and clinical consultant,

The Theory Of Language For Children With Language...
Speech language pathology is a constantly evolving field. In truth, assessment strategies and
therapies are constantly being improved because of the influences of Swiss biologist Jean Piaget
(1896–1980) and Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky (1896–1934), who developed theories of
cognitive development among children. While these theories are similar in some ways, they also
have key differences, such as the fact that Piaget thought children developed through stages,
whereas Vygotsky stressed a more continuous and social process. Piaget's key findings in the
sensorimotor stage of a child's development and the fact that children are active learners are highly
applicable in an occupation such as speech language pathology. The same is true about Vygotsky's
ideas of scaffolding, social interaction, and the zone of proximal development. These beliefs of
Piaget and Vygotsky are essential to the understanding and application of speech language
pathologists in their language evaluations and in developing treatment plans for children with
language impairments and disorders.
As discussed in the online lectures, Jean Piaget was a constructivist who believed that children
developed through discontinuous stages. Each stage is qualitatively different, indicating that
children think a specific way across each stage. Piaget's findings in the sensorimotor period, which
occurs from birth until the first two years of life, are especially important to speech language
pathologists because it is

Benefits Of Speech-Language Pathology Services
An issue frequently debated by the legislature concerns funding of various social/public programs
which include speech–language pathology services. As a child who suffered from an auditory
processing disorder, and a future licensed Speech–Language Pathologist (SLP), I know all too well
how important SLP services are for children. Currently, funding for social/public programs to
include Speech–Language Pathology services in the United States is not adequate for children with
learning disabilities and the legislature must act to remedy this. In 1975, Congress enacted the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to ensure that children with disabilities will
receive a free appropriate public education through their local school ... Show more content on

IDEA defines a learning disability as a disorder in understanding or using language, spoken or
written, that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or do
mathematical calculations. Learning disabilities are a life–long issue. Language problems that go
untreated in the early years of school can continue into high school and adulthood. As a child who
suffered with an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), early intervention was very important for me
to progress in school. I continue to this day, to utilize and build on compensatory techniques taught
by my grade school Speech Pathologist. Henceforth, I have been able to succeed in school, social
settings and now in college. According to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA)
2016 School Survey, Speech Pathologists rated the amount of paperwork, high workload/caseload
size, and limited time for collaboration and budget constraints among their greatest challenges.
Immense pressure is placed on the SLPs in a school setting. Children with learning disabilities have
a multitude of different needs, and for many, thirty–minute therapy sessions are not enough time to
adequately address their problems. Furthermore, in many schools, Speech–Language Pathologists
have had to make up some or all of missed student sessions themselves without any substitute
coverage. This in turn has increased group therapy sizes which compromises the quality

Hello Dr. Bellis,
I recently applied to USD's Speech–language Pathology M.A. program for spring starts. Mrs. Korte
informed me that spots are limited, but I'm still hopeful to receive a seat in the program. USD is the
only spring application I submitted, so there will be no hesitation in my acceptance. I'm extremely
motivated to continue pursuing my education and only regret that it hasn't yet begun. Not only do I
look forward to being welcomed into a program where I won't be lost in a huge crowd, I embrace
the possibility of continuing my journey in a program that focuses so heavily on community
outreach.

practice and delivery domains. Information from each section is summarized below.

The first domain of professional delivery is advocacy and outreach; advocacy is used to promote
and facilitate the access to communication. Advocacy is carried out in various ways such as
community awareness, prevention activities, health literacy, and academic literacy. Supervision is
the second domain of professional delivery which can be described as a role where the SLP
supervises clinical fellows, graduate externs, and other personnel. The third domain of professional
delivery is education. SLP's are viewed as educators; they teach students at schools and also teach
other professionals. Research is the fourth domain of professional delivery. ASHA says that SLP's
conduct and participate in basic and applied/translational research that's related to cognition, verbal
and nonverbal communication, pragmatics, literacy and feeding and swallowing (ASHA,2016). The
last domain included in the professional delivery is administration and leadership which talks about
the different places that SLP's may have to administer programs in education. An SLP may be
required to make administrative decisions that are related to fiscal and personnel management,

Personal Reflection
Many people would like to make a difference, not only in their own life, but in others' lives as well.
Deepak Chopra once said, "Everyone has a purpose in life...a unique gift or special talent to give to
others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and
exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals." All of us, at one point in our
lives, have to make the difficult decision of the goals we want to work towards. We all have certain
goals, standards, and expectations of ourselves. Not everyone will figure out what they want to be
right away, and some will know from the very beginning. My journey began my senior year of high

That experience began when I shadowed on the cleft and craniofacial unit at John Hopkins
Children's Center. This experience was very enlightening allowing me to confirm and envisioned
myself in any aspect of the profession. This was the moment when speech therapy became one of
my interests in pursuing a career as a Speech–Language Pathologist. While I would like to
specialize in cleft palate, I am aware of the vast opportunities that the field of speech–language
pathology has to offer. The future of the profession is ever changing. Therefore, I want to continue
to learn all the aspects of communication disorders, techniques, and treatments in both educational
and medical settings. I will obtain my bachelor's degree in communication disorders in a shortened
3–year period, and I am humbled and proud of my academic successes. I have found that patience,
passion, and persistence can enable me to become a successful Speech–Language Pathologist.
Speech– Language Pathology still intrigues me in many ways. One reason is the major is ever
changing, allowing me to learn new aspects of the career every day. I have the ability to work in a

are my three top reasons for choosing the major of Speech–Language Pathology. I understand

Summary Of Speech-Language Pathology
While reading this article, I learned the brain acquires differently among children who are living in
the lower, middle, and upper classes. The cognitive functions, emotional development, and language
growth of individuals will be affected by those living in poverty. For example, a child's temper,
anger management skills, ability to cope, working memory, and reading skills may be affected.
To promote language growth in therapy, I could involve the client and caregiver in determining
goals and expectations for treatment. I could use the techniques and methods to engage the brain and
encourage making connections to subjects the client is interested in. I should use reassuring
statements throughout treatment to positively reinforce the client.
I learned that an important aspect of Speech–Language Pathology is providing clients with the
ability to make choices. Individuals want the opportunity to express their feelings, concerns, and
activities they want to take part in. Some individuals with communication ... Show more content on

I learned that diagnosing Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) can be challenging because it can
potentially coincide with linguistic or phonological deficits. Determining the contribution of motor–
speech impairment is one of the most difficult tasks in the diagnosis. Symptoms that discriminate
CAS involve prosodic mistakes, vowel distortions, and inconsistent voicing mistakes. Poor

The Role Of Bias In Speech-Language Pathology
A phenomenon applicable to the vast field of Speech–Language Pathology, and the foundation of
research now and in the future can all be attributed to, difference versus disorder. This concept
considers the complexities of those served within the profession and highlights the range of
possibilities displayed from an individual, that draws a fine line between a person being labeled as
having a dialectal difference or a speech and/or language disorder. A difference can be defined as an
alteration in an individual's speech and/or language that can be attributed to internal and external
factors such as race, culture, and the environment in which a person lives. In contrast, a disorder is
an actual disability that interferes with a person's speech ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

There are distinctive social rules, behaviors, interpretation rules, production rules, and proximity
rules that exist in varying cultures (Taylor & Payne, 1983). This impacts how a client will address
and behave towards a clinician depending on their background. Within this bias fall
misunderstanding and misinterpretation due to what is acceptable in one culture versus what is
acceptable in another culture (Taylor & Payne, 1983). Situational biases develop from the
pragmatics aspect of language, reflecting the possibility of response variability based upon the
situation, the audience, and the topic (Taylor & Payne, 1983). Next, the article discussed directions
or format bias, which reveals the faults within the framework of test materials. The format of certain
tests and the directions within the test usually do not consider various cultures, and may not be
relevant to some cultures. The article gives the example of Chicano children who have field–
dependent orientation to cognition; they may not know how to respond to an assessment question
that deviates from the norms within their culture (Taylor & Payne, 1983). For example, it's like

caseload for six years. According to Larry, in the last ten to fifteen years the caseload number has
not changed, but job responsibilities have significantly increased due to IDEA (Individuals with

fifty–two forms are now required for each child, which increase the workload of all speech–

have enough money to hire SLP's the federal government has a law that says all children ages three

child, but for children who have a harder time the schools are required to hire a speech–language

I have always wondered if the statements "children are like sponges" and "you can't teach an old dog
new tricks" were true, so I've decided that my research paper would cover something similar to this.
"...Around 1925, when those working in the field of speech disorders and speech correction
established their own organization." Without the beginning of this organization to help people in
need I would not be able to do any sort of research for this paper. My research topic is to discover if
children learn or pick up on speech therapy faster than adults do. I believe that children are able to
pick up on the therapy faster than adults. After some research I've discovered that children and
adults learn in different ways, "If you teach adults, you'll find that it can be a very different
experience from teaching children", but if they are taught the appropriate way for their age, children
and adults would most likely end up learning at the same pace. This research subject might be
challenging because there are many different reasons why people must take speech therapy to help
repair what is

Speech-Language Pathology Program Analysis
My goal is to maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher to keep my place in the speech–language pathology
program. Marywood University was my first choice college and I couldn't be happier that I'm here. I
committed to come to Marywood because of the speech program, the atmosphere, the stress on
service, and the importance of education. The reasons I can here parallel the Core Values of
Marywood. They also put me on the right track to accomplish my own goals. I want to serve others,
get an education, and become a welcoming friend to all who need one. When I found out that
Marywood had a 5–year speech program I couldn't be happier. What could be better than getting a

I found out about the Maxis–Gillet Service Scholars and I instantly wanted to be involved. I sent in
my application, went for interviews, and now I am a Maxis–Gillet myself! Service has always been
a big part of my life and being a Maxis–Gillet furthers my passion. It allows me to serve a new
group of people and experience new opportunities. All of the clubs I joined offer service
opportunities. I think it's amazing that every club and athletic team participates in something. I am
very involved with activities on campus and I love when I hear that other people are having a good
time.
Last but not least is education. I aspire to be a well–rounded speech pathologist and Marywood
offers me multiple ways to accomplish this. By attending a liberal arts college, I will get educated in
many areas, not just in speech pathology. Although it may seem like a lot to handle, it really is worth

Speech Language Pathology (SLP)
As a daughter of a Special Education teacher, my interest in populations with special needs was
sparked at a young age. Though I've always been interested in health professions, I was indecisive
on which field best suited me. However, I when I discovered Speech Language Pathology (SLP), I
found what I was looking for. I desire to be an SLP because it will give me the freedom to work in a
variety of locations and environments with many different populations while enjoying the luxury of
a flexible schedule, a nice income, and possible self–employment. I am eager to learn in graduate
school and am excited about being a future SLP.

profession, my aspiration is to improve the quality of someone's life. My recent experiences involve
volunteer work, research, clinical observations, internships and student leadership positions. I was
recently granted the opportunity to present at the N.S.S.B. in Atlanta, Georgia. The research topic on

Speech Language Pathology Personal Statement
My passion for Speech Language Pathology developed later than most of my peers. I was naive
enough freshmen year to think that I could settle as a Psychology major. Thankfully, Speech
Pathology crossed right into my path at the most unforeseen moment. One introduction class was all
it took, I was hooked. I've been exposed to first–hand clinical experiences, job shadowing
opportunities, and professors who were so passionate about their job that they made me want to
experience the same thing. One experience in particular was my senior project. I successfully
implemented Naturalistic/play–based therapy to a four year old with Down syndrome, which
presented cognitive and developmental delays. The long–term goal was to increase his expressive
communication, which was significantly limited. Eliciting two word responses from a 4– year old
who would rather gesture for his wants/needs was extremely challenging. A no–tech AAC device

Pursuing A Bachelor's Degree In Speech-Language Pathology
Colin Powell once said, "There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work,
and learning from failure". My undergraduate career was not a typical one, I have struggled and
worked for everything I have achieved. At the end of the finish line, I have gained a Bachelor's
Degree from Molloy College in Speech–Language Pathology and I am extremely proud of all the
knowledge in which I have learned throughout this time. Throughout my first 3 years of my
undergraduate career, I had an enormous amount of difficulty trying to figure out what I wanted to
do with the rest of my life. I attended CUNY Queensborough Community college from the Fall
2009 semester to December 2011. After graduating with my Associates Degree in Liberal Arts, I

Increasing Cultural Competence in the Field of...
"Raise your hand on the side that you hear the sound. Now open your mouth and stick out your
tongue for me. Close it and then make an ooo sound, like a ghost." This is what a brief clip of a
speech and language evaluation might sound like if someone were to be observing. But imagine that
the test that was just observed was over and now the clinician must speak to the parents; however,
they can only speak to one: the father, due to the strict Muslim culture that the family comes from.
What should be done since typically the most important person to inform is the mom and speaking
to her is not acceptable? (Cara). This is a dilemma that a Missouri State University– Communication
Sciences and Disorders, Speech and Language pathology graduate student recently encountered.
One in which she was unprepared for because while Missouri State Communication Sciences and
Disorders professors, teach students how to be aware of different cultures, they don't necessarily
teach students how to handle them as they come. This lack of cultural competency poses a problem
and in turn hinders a speech–language pathologist's ability to provide equal, appropriate and
accessible services for groups affected by speech and language impediments. Therefore, speech–
language pathologists must increase their cultural competence in different cultures and be better
prepared to provide services for patients who may not be primarily English speakers or hail from a
different cultural background that is not as

A Career in Speech and Language Pathology
A Career in Speech and Language Pathology Walking into school, a little boy is scared to talk to his
classmates because he stutters . He is not getting good grades because he has trouble understanding
information and communicating. His parents want to help him ,but do not know how. That is when
speech and language pathologists come to the rescue. Speech and language pathologists help kids,
teens, and adults overcome their oral and mental difficulties. They specialize in the field of helping
the physically impaired, mentally impaired and behavioral disorders. The main issues they deal with
are stuttering, mispronunciation, troubles communicating with others, troubles sharing thoughts, and
troubles articulating (Connelly 44). Speech pathologists are required to attend many years of school
to receive their Masters Degree and are paid a good amount, and their career gives them a rewarding
prize of being able to strengthen their students minds to help them understand and learn better. Like
all jobs there is a certain amount of education that an employee must complete in order to get the job
he or she is wishing to do. Specifically, speech and language pathologists go through getting there
bachelors and masters degree ("Speech Language Pathologist – Career Profile" 1). Before even
entering the world of college people aspiring to practice this job should take english, public
speaking, physiology, social sciences, math, and biology classes ("Careers in Speech–Pathology" 3).

Personal Narrative: A Career In Speech-Language Pathology
When considering a career in speech–language pathology, it is important to get input from
individuals who have already been in the profession for many years. Upon talking with them, you
can learn more about how the field looks in the day–to–day functions and situations. For this
assignment, I talked to a speech–language pathologist in the school system and in a private–based
practice. They both offered important insight and advice. Throughout my conversations, I have
learned more about the direction I am heading and the multiple avenues that are available to me.
I interviewed Gayle Goepfert who owns a private practice called Goepfert Speech Associates in
Hershey, Pennsylvania. She informed me of how she started working at a hospital but then did some
work with local nursing homes before transitioning to owning her own private–practice. Mrs.
Goepfert decided to go this route due to having her first child because this enabled her to work as
needed. Private–based practices are also a viable option due to the fact that state and federal funding
often does not address mild cases. Thus, about 80% of her workload is pediatric, which means she
works with regular articulation issues, children on the autism ... Show more content on

Both professionals provided valuable information for a speech–language pathology student. I asked
both of them to provide me with some concluding advice. Mrs. Goepfert encouraged me to observe
various settings in order to determine which one would be best for me. Mrs. Pulice told me to be
patient when working with students in order to provide them the care they need. This direct advice
and this assignment were both helpful in helping me pursue and consider this career. Both avenues
appeal to me, and I could see myself doing both at some point. However, this confirms to me that I
want to work with disadvantaged children within the public education

The Field Of Speech Language Pathology
Choosing a career might be considered one of the most important decisions in an individual's life.
The type of career people choose often paves the way for most of their opportunities and certainly
has a direct impact in their self–identity. It has been recorded over the years, that gender roles and
stereotypes have a direct influence when it comes to career decision making. For example; most
men, who are considered the primary breadwinner of the home, tend to choose careers that ensure
financial benefits and professional advancement such as medicine, law, finance, and politics.
Women, on the other hand, focus on choosing a career in which they can balance their family life

My story behind choosing to study Speech–Language Pathology is much different than many who
are in the program. As far back into my childhood as I can remember, I have had an indescribable
passion for children with special needs. In high school, there were times when special needs
students in my classes needed partners, and I would often be asked to work with them because the
teachers recognized the compassion and the patience that I held in my heart for them. I strived to
find an area of study that would incorporate this love for children, and the desire I have for being a
helping hand in all situations. I graduated high school with the long–term goal of becoming a
clinical therapist who works specifically with children. I did pursue this, and I received my
undergraduate degree in Psychology. However, I soon learned that this wasn't what I felt destined to
do. After a lot of research and even more prayers, I decided that Speech Language Pathology ...

Speech Language Pathology Intervention Paper
Introduction:
In the field of speech language pathology parent education and involvement in treatment programs
can be very beneficial to a client's progress(TEMPEL). Evidence supports the use of programs that
contain interactive approaches to speech and language intervention(LORRAINE). The importance
of education is often recognized but can be difficult to deliver. The challenge of providing an
effective parent/ caregiver education is an issue that Speech Language Pthologists may come in
contact with.
While some speech language pathologists may choose to deliver parent education using their own
methodology , a large number may opt to participate in teaching methodology and coaching

Parents are very important to the intervention process so educating parents on how to facilitate their
child's language and speech could potentially be very helpful to the child's progress(ALEEN

a few times a week, but there are many opportunities to increase a child's speech and language
outside of therapy. Many parents are not aware of how to do this or the opportunities, which is why
programs such as Hanen were created.
The Hanen program seeks to educate parents on ways that they can provide language and speech

I choose the article "New Guidelines Assist Clinical Doctorate Programs in Speech–Language
Pathology". This articles states how ASHA is starting to have new guidelines for schools that offer
clinical doctorate programs or is planning to offer them in the future. The guidelines are also
intended for SLP graduates who want to enter management positions in the clinical setting. I found
this article to be very important, because I feel as if speech pathology is sometimes not taken as
seriously as it should be by other clinicians. However, on the other hand I feel like our fellow
coworkers such as physical therapist, audiologist, and physicians are all taken very seriously. I
believe this have something to do with the fact that these professionals all need doctoral or
professional degrees for entrance in their professions. However, we do not. ... Show more content on

not just audiology doctorates, should be offered in more schools. It's important for there to be more

The areas that interest me the most in Speech Language Pathology practice are Autism and Down

where as a future Speech Language Pathologist, I have a large scope to learn from and achieve
professional goals in one discipline. A larger group in the Autism community is found in children
furthermore, Autism is characterized to follow a child all his or her life and as adults with Autism,

A Speech–Language Pathologist (SLP) is a specialist who evaluates and treats patients or students
with speech, language, cognitive–communication, and swallowing disorders in individuals of all
ages, according to MedicineNet (MedicineNet). People of all ages can struggle with speaking
whether it be articulating letters, stuttering or dyslexia. It is easiest to help correct these challenges
at a younger age, but not impossible when you are older. Regardless of the age or the reason behind
the treatment, the most important part is that the individual receives the therapy that is needed to
help them reach their optimum ability in communication and speaking.

While with Ms. Smith, I was able to learn more about the difference between Medical Speech–
Language Pathology and School Speech–Language Pathology. One of the major differences was the
schooling you have to go through to become each type of pathologist. In a school, they require a
masters to pass the national test, and a teaching certificate, where as a medical SLP's need a masters
to pass the national test, and a certificate of clinician competence. Another difference is what each
type of pathology pays. A school pathologist starts at around $40,000 a year with a scheduled "step"
raise yearly of between $2,500 to $3,000. Medical SLP's start out at around $10,000 more than in a
school and can increase significantly more over time. According to Learn.org, the highest mean
salary someone can expect to receive in a hospital/laboratory setting is about $105,680 as of 2015
(Learn.org). One question I was eager to learn more about was how exactly does an SLP help
children? While researching this question, I came across a video that explains exactly how it helps
children. Speech–Language Pathology can help with children's communication skills. It allows them
to better understand what is being said to them and how to express themselves to others. It
encourages them to talk with others more, and improves reading and writing skills. Communication
can impact a child's social skills and can be an area kids may struggle. With some help with their
speech, they can share a common focus with another person, play with others and share toys,
understand feelings, and make friends. Overall, Speech–Language Pathology helps them interact
better with people around them and makes them feel more comfortable in a classroom (ASHA). One
last thing that I was able to come to a conclusion on was the common terminology used as a
Speech–Language Pathologist. Like most fields of study,

Speech-Language Pathology

  • 1. Speech-Language Pathology Speech–Language Pathology has been around since about the 1940's. It is traced back to after World War II when thousands of young servicemen and women returned with noise–induced hearing loss. The United States Government responded by creating hearing rehabilitation programs at the military hospitals where hearing aid procedures were standardized across the country. So what exactly is Speech–Language Pathology? Have there been many Speech Pathology developments over the years, and who are some of the key players? Yes, due to an increase in the need for new advancements, there have been many new developments over the years. During the 1950's–60's, hearing programs emerged greatly in community speech and hearing centers geared to aural rehabilitation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A thirty year Speech–Language Pathologist Shannon Piercy has seen the way her clients are treated differently over time as technology grows. She explains that back in the day, they did a lot of games, cards, workbooks and a lot of printed material with the clients. She says that they really did not have a lot of special things so they had to make most of it up. With all the new advances in the field of speech–language pathology she says that "we now have computers, iPads and iPhones that have the software already loaded so we don't have to come up with the games on our own. It makes it much easier to come up with a specific plan for each child." (Piercey olemissjournalism) A mother of a four year old speech student explains how she has seen such a dramatic difference in her son's ability to communicate because of these new advances in technology. She explains "when he began early intervention at 18 months old, he was diagnosed with a severe expressive language delay. Thanks in part to the use of technology in therapy, at four years old, his language skills are now equivalent to his age–level peers." (Hall ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. A Career In Speech-Language Pathology As a child, I was faced with a lot of adversity. My grandmother raised my brothers and me. We lived on government assistance with little money and no car for transportation for extracurricular activities. The hardships we faced compelled me at a young age to stay in school, go to college, and make something of myself because I did not want to live a life limiting my dreams and opportunities. Throughout my academic career, there was not a specific moment that solidified my desire to pursue a profession in Speech– Language Pathology (SLP); instead, there were numerous. I initially became interested in this profession after learning how a child's dysfluency was able to significantly improve. The gradual process of a client making substantial improvements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I put my best effort into everything that I do because I believe that a person's work reflects who they are as an individual, thus, I strive to ensure that my work is a true representation of who I am. The challenges and obstacles that I have endured and overcome have helped build my character of being a resilient individual that is willing to do whatever it takes to pursue my dreams. I can honestly say adversity transformed me into the strong–minded person I am today. I do not take anything for granted because I know what it feels like to not have much. I do everything with a purpose and the desire to make a better life for myself so I work hard to achieve all of my goals. I want to be a speech pathologist that delivers and promotes the highest professional standards in a variety of clinical educational settings across a culturally and linguistically diverse client population. Ultimately, I know that if given the chance to obtain a Master's of Science in Speech–Language Pathology at the University of West Georgia, I am confident in my ability to be a devoted student who is eager and willing to learn how to work closely with faculty and staff to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively assess a patient and be a remarkable speech ... • 5. Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology And Deaf Studies I am a Speech–Language Pathology/Audiology and Deaf Studies combined major. Throughout middle and high school I was fortunate enough to be able to volunteer in elementary school classrooms. Many times, I worked in the second grade special education classrooms. This experience engrained in my mind what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My favorite part of volunteering was helping the children with special needs. Many of these children were isolated from their classmates as a result of what was described to me then as a disability. As I got to know a little bit about these children I saw more and more that the label "disabled" that society places upon these children was not applicable. Deafness is a difference, not a disability. Growing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Collectively, my mom, a speech pathologist, and I sat down and watched videos that she had of her own vocal chords being activated and used for communication through speech and language. I was intrigued by the way that they worked and the way they were used to enable communication. It was through my research and careful observation of the way that the vocal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through speech pathology, people are reached and shown compassion who are typically considered outcasts in society. SLPs work with individuals who are struggling with various sets of problems and help to solve those problems through undivided attention and spirits of patience and willingness to aid people with speech, language, and mental impairments. I believe this would be a good career fit for me due to my heart for people and my teaching spirit. My mom's perspective of me pursuing a career as an SLP is that it would be a good fit due to my kind and gentle spirit and conduciveness with working with struggling individuals. • 11. The Speech-Language Pathology Strategic Planning Committee Over the past year, I have been involved in several committees at the department and college levels. When I began my service at UDC, I was a member of the Faculty Senate for two years. This allowed me to learn the university culture and the importance of shared governance. Thereafter, the committees in which I volunteered to serve were, not only interdisciplinary and collaborative, but were those that served the needs of students. For example, in the past, I served as a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Grievance Committee which met as needed to resolve instructor/student conflicts. The charge of this committee was to make recommendations regarding the programs mission, vision, strategic initiatives, curricular changes and/or adjustments. Additionally, the SPC identifies critical strategic issues facing the program and provides recommendations of alternative strategic options. Even though, we all must remain current with trends in the profession, advances in evidence–based practices, and the needs of all stakeholders of speech–language pathology, it falls to the SPC to provide recommendations relative to those market trends, the needs of the community program and making the program more viable and competitive than it is presently. Therefore, the SPC is mandated to develop measureable strategic goals for development and implementation for five–year interim periods. In the beginning of the academic year, the SPC met with faculty and staff to review the current strategic plan and to map out potential changes and future goals that the SPC will formulate. As a former SLP program director, I am well familiar with past goals of the program (since I drafted them), including curricular changes, teaching and employment needs as well as needs of the students as they progress through their matriculation. Additionally, as a former program director I managed the elimination of the undergraduate division of the program and wrote a monograph recommending a doctoral program in speech–language pathology to be created once the university forms an infrastructure to accommodate such a program. As always, the strategic plan is student–driven. Those goals that ensure students are ready to take the board examination (PRAXIS), are ready for employment and patient engagement are the primary concerns of the SCP. • 13. The Theory Of Language For Children With Language... Speech language pathology is a constantly evolving field. In truth, assessment strategies and therapies are constantly being improved because of the influences of Swiss biologist Jean Piaget (1896–1980) and Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky (1896–1934), who developed theories of cognitive development among children. While these theories are similar in some ways, they also have key differences, such as the fact that Piaget thought children developed through stages, whereas Vygotsky stressed a more continuous and social process. Piaget's key findings in the sensorimotor stage of a child's development and the fact that children are active learners are highly applicable in an occupation such as speech language pathology. The same is true about Vygotsky's ideas of scaffolding, social interaction, and the zone of proximal development. These beliefs of Piaget and Vygotsky are essential to the understanding and application of speech language pathologists in their language evaluations and in developing treatment plans for children with language impairments and disorders. As discussed in the online lectures, Jean Piaget was a constructivist who believed that children developed through discontinuous stages. Each stage is qualitatively different, indicating that children think a specific way across each stage. Piaget's findings in the sensorimotor period, which occurs from birth until the first two years of life, are especially important to speech language pathologists because it is ... • 15. Benefits Of Speech-Language Pathology Services An issue frequently debated by the legislature concerns funding of various social/public programs which include speech–language pathology services. As a child who suffered from an auditory processing disorder, and a future licensed Speech–Language Pathologist (SLP), I know all too well how important SLP services are for children. Currently, funding for social/public programs to include Speech–Language Pathology services in the United States is not adequate for children with learning disabilities and the legislature must act to remedy this. In 1975, Congress enacted the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to ensure that children with disabilities will receive a free appropriate public education through their local school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... IDEA defines a learning disability as a disorder in understanding or using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or do mathematical calculations. Learning disabilities are a life–long issue. Language problems that go untreated in the early years of school can continue into high school and adulthood. As a child who suffered with an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), early intervention was very important for me to progress in school. I continue to this day, to utilize and build on compensatory techniques taught by my grade school Speech Pathologist. Henceforth, I have been able to succeed in school, social settings and now in college. According to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) 2016 School Survey, Speech Pathologists rated the amount of paperwork, high workload/caseload size, and limited time for collaboration and budget constraints among their greatest challenges. Immense pressure is placed on the SLPs in a school setting. Children with learning disabilities have a multitude of different needs, and for many, thirty–minute therapy sessions are not enough time to adequately address their problems. Furthermore, in many schools, Speech–Language Pathologists have had to make up some or all of missed student sessions themselves without any substitute coverage. This in turn has increased group therapy sizes which compromises the quality ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Personal Reflection Many people would like to make a difference, not only in their own life, but in others' lives as well. Deepak Chopra once said, "Everyone has a purpose in life...a unique gift or special talent to give to others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals." All of us, at one point in our lives, have to make the difficult decision of the goals we want to work towards. We all have certain goals, standards, and expectations of ourselves. • 23. Summary Of Speech-Language Pathology While reading this article, I learned the brain acquires differently among children who are living in the lower, middle, and upper classes. The cognitive functions, emotional development, and language growth of individuals will be affected by those living in poverty. For example, a child's temper, anger management skills, ability to cope, working memory, and reading skills may be affected. To promote language growth in therapy, I could involve the client and caregiver in determining goals and expectations for treatment. I could use the techniques and methods to engage the brain and encourage making connections to subjects the client is interested in. I should use reassuring statements throughout treatment to positively reinforce the client. The Role Of Bias In Speech-Language Pathology A phenomenon applicable to the vast field of Speech–Language Pathology, and the foundation of research now and in the future can all be attributed to, difference versus disorder. This concept considers the complexities of those served within the profession and highlights the range of possibilities displayed from an individual, that draws a fine line between a person being labeled as having a dialectal difference or a speech and/or language disorder. There are distinctive social rules, behaviors, interpretation rules, production rules, and proximity rules that exist in varying cultures (Taylor & Payne, 1983). Situational biases develop from the pragmatics aspect of language, reflecting the possibility of response variability based upon the situation, the audience, and the topic (Taylor & Payne, 1983). Next, the article discussed directions or format bias, which reveals the faults within the framework of test materials. The format of certain tests and the directions within the test usually do not consider various cultures, and may not be relevant to some cultures. Larry Biehl, who is a professional in this field, has been working on an approach to help minimize this problem of caseload for six years. According to Larry, in the last ten to fifteen years the caseload number has not changed, but job responsibilities have significantly increased due to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and other federal mandates. For example, an average of ten meetings and fifty–two forms are now required for each child, which increase the workload of all speech– language pathologist ("Redefining"). Mrs. Sullivan said, "Caseload is a tremendous problem in public schools, especially in the state of Oklahoma because of all the cut backs and public funding for school so they can't hire as many." Mrs. Sullivan also said, "that even though the state doesn't have enough money to hire SLP's the federal government has a law that says all children ages three to twenty–one deserve to have a free and appropriate education, which is no problem for a normal child, but for children who have a harder time the schools are required to hire a speech–language pathologist, causing the SLP are the public school to have an enormous caseload." One in which she was unprepared for because while Missouri State Communication Sciences and Disorders professors, teach students how to be aware of different cultures, they don't necessarily teach students how to handle them as they come. • 75. Speech Language Pathology Study The areas that interest me the most in Speech Language Pathology practice are Autism and Down Syndrome with feeding and swallowing disorder. I believe both areas are evolving and are most common now days, calling for a great necessity in therapeutic services. Autism is a broad field, where as a future Speech Language Pathologist, I have a large scope to learn from and achieve professional goals in one discipline. A larger group in the Autism community is found in children furthermore, Autism is characterized to follow a child all his or her life and as adults with Autism, specifically those who are nonverbal may also benefit from Speech and Language treatment. This allows employment opportunities in both children and adult settings for future SLP's. My experience as an Assistant Speech Language Pathologist, taught me a person with Autism is distinct from any other person with this disorder. Each individual has unique traits and features that distinguish one another, which involves thorough research for an individualized plan of care. It allows for a greater understanding of clients needs and SLP's acquire knowledge in updated research. What I appreciate about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 77. Speech-Language Pathology Research Paper A Speech–Language Pathologist (SLP) is a specialist who evaluates and treats patients or students with speech, language, cognitive–communication, and swallowing disorders in individuals of all ages, according to MedicineNet (MedicineNet). People of all ages can struggle with speaking whether it be articulating letters, stuttering or dyslexia. It is easiest to help correct these challenges at a younger age, but not impossible when you are older. Regardless of the age or the reason behind the treatment, the most important part is that the individual receives the therapy that is needed to help them reach their optimum ability in communication and speaking. Before starting this project, I didn't know very much about Speech–Language Pathology. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While with Ms. Smith, I was able to learn more about the difference between Medical Speech– Language Pathology and School Speech–Language Pathology. One of the major differences was the schooling you have to go through to become each type of pathologist. In a school, they require a masters to pass the national test, and a teaching certificate, where as a medical SLP's need a masters to pass the national test, and a certificate of clinician competence. Another difference is what each type of pathology pays. A school pathologist starts at around $40,000 a year with a scheduled "step" raise yearly of between $2,500 to $3,000. Medical SLP's start out at around $10,000 more than in a school and can increase significantly more over time. According to Learn.org, the highest mean salary someone can expect to receive in a hospital/laboratory setting is about $105,680 as of 2015 (Learn.org). One question I was eager to learn more about was how exactly does an SLP help children? While researching this question, I came across a video that explains exactly how it helps children. Speech–Language Pathology can help with children's communication skills. It allows them to better understand what is being said to them and how to express themselves to others. It encourages them to talk with others more, and improves reading and writing skills. Communication can impact a child's social skills and can be an area kids may struggle. With some help with their speech, they can share a common focus with another person, play with others and share toys, understand feelings, and make friends. Overall, Speech–Language Pathology helps them interact better with people around them and makes them feel more comfortable in a classroom (ASHA). One last thing that I was able to come to a conclusion on was the common terminology used as a Speech–Language Pathologist. Like most fields of study, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
