middle and high school I was fortunate enough to be able to volunteer in elementary school

As an eight year old student, I entered the annual science fair at school. The subject I chose to
observe and research for my project was the human vocal chords. Collectively, my mom, a speech
pathologist, and I sat down and watched videos that she had of her own vocal chords being activated

Through speech pathology, people are reached and shown compassion who are typically considered
outcasts in society. SLPs work with individuals who are struggling with various sets of problems
and help to solve those problems through undivided attention and spirits of patience and willingness
to aid people with speech, language, and mental impairments. I believe this would be a good career
fit for me due to my heart for people and my teaching spirit. My mom's perspective of me pursuing

The charge of this committee was to make recommendations regarding the programs mission,

Speech language pathology is a constantly evolving field. In truth, assessment strategies and
therapies are constantly being improved because of the influences of Swiss biologist Jean Piaget
(1896–1980) and Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky (1896–1934), who developed theories of
cognitive development among children. While these theories are similar in some ways, they also
have key differences, such as the fact that Piaget thought children developed through stages,
whereas Vygotsky stressed a more continuous and social process. Piaget's key findings in the
sensorimotor stage of a child's development and the fact that children are active learners are highly
applicable in an occupation such as speech language pathology. The same is true about Vygotsky's
ideas of scaffolding, social interaction, and the zone of proximal development. These beliefs of
Piaget and Vygotsky are essential to the understanding and application of speech language
pathologists in their language evaluations and in developing treatment plans for children with

IDEA defines a learning disability as a disorder in understanding or using language, spoken or
written, that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or do
mathematical calculations. Learning disabilities are a life–long issue. Language problems that go

I recently applied to USD's Speech–language Pathology M.A. program for spring starts. Mrs. Korte
informed me that spots are limited, but I'm still hopeful to receive a seat in the program. USD is the
only spring application I submitted, so there will be no hesitation in my acceptance. I'm extremely
motivated to continue pursuing my education and only regret that it hasn't yet begun. Not only do I

the lower, middle, and upper classes. The cognitive functions, emotional development, and language

Keaunna Knox's Speech-Language Pathology
Keaunna Knox has been a Speech–Language Pathologist (SLP) since 2007, and has worked ever
since 2000 with children with special needs who had speech and language disorders. She began as

For the past number of years, Ohio has taken a caseload approach. This means SLPs are allowed no
more than 80 students having IEPs on their caseload ("Caseload vs"). Larry Biehl, who is a
professional in this field, has been working on an approach to help minimize this problem of
caseload for six years. According to Larry, in the last ten to fifteen years the caseload number has
not changed, but job responsibilities have significantly increased due to IDEA (Individuals with

normal according to research. I enjoy attending NSA events in the hope of informing others that
