What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
1. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM
THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?
2. CAMERAS
We used a Panasonic HDCHS80 for the making of our film in which we also used in
the Preliminary task, we decided to use the same camera as we felt it still had high
quality and we already knew how to work it which we all preferred.
We could have used the more professional camera which was a Sony HD 1000, this
would have gave us a high quality image however we preferred the smaller camera
which we was familiar with. We felt like the shots we were taking and the idea of our
film wouldn’t have been dramatically effected if we used a professional camera,
whereas if we had shots of landscapes etc. we would have decided as a group to use
the camera which would deliver a clear image to improve the shot.
3. FINAL CUT EXPRESS
I thought Final Cut Express was a good editing software overall, as from the
Preliminary task I feel like I have adapted my skills with the software.
We put an edit on several of the shots as we adjusted the lighting as we wanted it to
feel creepy and without the adjustment it wouldn’t have looked how we imagined it
to.
Throughout using this software we used many transitions to make it noticeable that he
was having a nightmare, so by adding a few flashes, we thought, gave it an uneasy
feel as it was sudden and unexpected.
I feel like I have learned a lot since the preliminary task compared to the final film.
4. SOUND AND MUSIC
Within our film there is both diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound. For our non-
diegetic sound we wanted something creepy and mysterious to gain tension to the
nightmare scene. After a lot of research to find an appropriate sound effect to put
over the film, we eventually found the perfect one on FreeSound.org which was very
easy to use and quick to download the track we wanted.
We had to use a unsigned music track for copyright reasons, however I think this was
an advantage for us as it was an aspect of mystery and went with the idea of an
independent film.
All the other sounds are original sounds from recording, for example synchronous
sounds such as footsteps and doors shutting. With the dialogue we added sound
bridges to make the continuity of the film smoother.
5. BLOGGER!
Blogger is the programme I have enjoyed using most this year, I like the fact it’s a
programme that the whole group can access and you can gradually see the
progression in pre-production, research and ideas for the final film.
I thought it was very easy to use and makes all our work look presentable in a simple
easy way. By having a group blog this gave us the opportunity to stay organised and
help each other if we needed to.
This was a good programme to use for our research into ideas of location, props,
shots etc as we could illustrate it by embedding images or videos of similar films on
YouTube.
6. GOOGLE QUESTIONNAIRES AND FACEBOOK
We created a Questionnaire on Google which had a simple layout so it was easy to
understand which would increase the response rate compared to if we chose to use
another website to create a questionnaire. We found it quite difficult to think off
specific and appropriate questions however the software was easy to use and could
easy be used again.
By creating the questionnaire we then shared it on our Facebook pages to get more
people to see what we was doing and later shared our final film in which we received
good feedback. It would have been better if we used a wider range of social
networking sites for example Twitter and Tumblr to gain more feedback and get a
wide range of audiences responses.
7. PLANNING
In the process off planning for our film we used many other technologies for example
search engine such as Google which gave us the opportunity to research into similar
films.
For our location and props we used a Fujifilm Digital Camera to take images of the
possible locations and took photos during filming to put on blogger to show our
progression and mix with media platforms.
While we did our script for the final film we use Celtx which is a programme we also
used in the preliminary task so we found it very easy to use as its very self
explanatory.
8. WHAT WENT WELL? AND NOT SO WELL?
The initial idea was very difficult to decide as we all had our own ideas and had
different visions of how we wanted the film, this was probably the hardest part of the
film. Once we came up with the set storyline everything went rather well, the research
and individual work went well as everyone pulled their own weight in what needed to
be done.
Filming went well when we did it as it only took two days in the holidays to get it
done. However when we uploaded the clips onto the Macs we found a problem with
some of the clips as they had sound rays from the phone which meant we had to film
the conversation clips again. This gave us the opportunity to add more shots however
was very time consuming.
