9 Frame Analysis - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds (Death of You and Me)
1.
2. The opening shot to „Death of You and Me‟ by Noel Gallagher‟s
High Flying Birds shows an establishing shot of the location in
which the video is set. From this shot, we can see an old style
1970‟s diner, which allows the audience to understand what
theme the artist is trying to achieve. The diner goes by the name
“Last Chance” which we can link in with the portrayal of the girl‟s
dilemma later on in the video.
3. In the next shot, we see Noel Gallagher through a window, sat at a
table in the diner. This medium close up shot supports Andrew
Goodwin‟s theory of star image. The video has a narrative and has
incorporated the artist, Noel Gallagher, into this story within his own
video. Such a technique might have been used to allow the artist to
establish this is their video and for the audience to recognise this.
By creating a shot that‟s looking through the window, this also
makes the audience feel like an onlooker into the situation inside of
the diner.
4. A long shot now shows the audience a change of location from the diner.
Because this carriage does not, at the moment, link in with the linear
narrative of the story, this could make the audience suspect an upcoming
event in the storyline. The use of bright sunlight here supports the lyrics at
this point in time which are; “hide tide, summer in the city”. We, as an
audience, can tell the video is somewhat set in a derelict, old fashioned town
through the use of horses pulling carts, 70‟s style diner‟s and the clothes of
the characters. Noel, however, because a juxtaposition to this idea, as he is
seen in quite modern clothes and attire, suggesting the “city” is living in the
past.
5. Yet again, another medium close up has been used in this shot, to show the
main character in the narrative of the story. We gather she is the main
character as a similar shot was used at the beginning of the video and she is
seen throughout, with the camera constantly remaining on her. The use of
filming from outside a window, again, gives the audience the perspective of
on looking into a situation/dilemma. From this, we can take the female is
feeling fed up and wishes to be elsewhere, hence ,looking out the window.
The lyrics at this point of the video are “the sea‟s been calling out to me”
which backs up the thought of wanting to get away.
6. A close up shot centre frames Noel‟s note book in this shot. The focus is set to
a deep focus in order to set importance upon the book. If you look closely, you
can see the artist writing the lyrics to “The Death of You and Me”. This shot can
tie into McQuail‟s theory of personal identity. Noel Gallagher is famously known
for his talents in song writing, so therefore, you‟d expect him to be doing such
an activity. We can also see the gold and purple ring on Noel‟s right hand;
another object commonly associated with Noel Gallagher. Although the shot
doesn‟t really have anything to do with the narrative of the video, it ensures the
audience know that Noel is there and that this is his music, hence the writing of
the lyrics by Noel himself, in his notebook.
7. This next close up shot can support Denis McQuail‟s theory of
personal identity. Here, we can see the female, identifiable by her
clothes, been pushed by a hand with a gold and purple ring on.
Fans of Noel Gallagher will immediately associate the male hand
with Noel himself, as the ring is a personal object, associated with
Noel, as he never takes it off. Furthermore, this could suggest Noel
is helping the girl “push” herself into take a chance, and getting
away from the diner because this will be her “last chance”.
8. Another medium close up is used for this shot. From this, we
can see the female character emerging from the water, to the
words “another new day dawning” which could suggest that by
falling into the water, she‟s wiping her old life away, hence “the
death of you and me” and starting a new day. This shot could
also support Laura Mulvey‟s theory of the “male gaze”. A
commonly known shot used to capture male gaze in many
music video‟s is that of a female, emerging from a swimming
pool/sea, in little clothing and wet.
9. A medium long shot is used here, to show the female after she has
emerged from the pool. From this, we can see that she is wet, due to
the colour change in her dress, and that this is attracting male
attention, as you can see the man to the right staring. The dress she is
wearing is also quite short, considering she is “working” which suggests
the diner is corrupting her and she is on rock bottom. However, the
lyrics at this point in the video are “sucking up my soul” as she walks
in, oblivious to the fact she is wet and doesn‟t care anymore as her soul
has been sucked up.
10. The end of the video shows a medium long shot of the female character
going into the cart we saw at the beginning. Before this shot, we can tell
the upcoming event was a marching band, heading anywhere. Because
this, in the eyes of the audience, is the female‟s “last chance” we assume
that is why she is leaving with the marching band to head off for a new
life, as she has nothing to stay for. The lyrics throughout the entire song
tell us alone, even without any video, that the song is about escaping
“People who will be, the death of you and me” and that she will be “free to
spend our whole lives, running” which could be associated with the band
and therefore explain why she wants to follow.
