your audience?

2. Due to the demographic of the audience to ‘Angel Café’, targeting
them via filming conventions, for example - actors, soundtrack
and location would be the best way to interest them.
The first initial attraction would be our location. A café is a place that
most young people go and can put themselves in a situation in a
café. It is also a very common thing to find in any village town
(etc) which means it is realistic and not completely unreasonable
for something like the plot of ‘Angel Café’ to happen. The
location is not in any way glamorous and it doesn’t try to be
posh, or run down. This adds normality to the thriller which
attracts the audience to the cliff-hanger of the opening.
By having such a common location, this allows people to envisage
themselves in the situation of the victim in the ‘Angel Cafe’. Also
the fact that she is a young girl will be a pull factor for people to
come and see the opening/film.
A majority of our target audience will have had a job in similar
surroundings to a café like the one featured in ‘Angel Café’, so
therefore will be used to the layout and the system of a cafe.
This will bring it home to the audience that this isn’t completely
out of the ordinary and could happen. Stories like this tend to
appear on the news now and again, highlighting that it could be
one of them next, in a non-threatening way.
The main reason for the location attracting the audience is that
people encounter café’s on a daily basis, so people stepping into
the shoes of Agnes from the ‘Angel Cafe’ is one of the most
important factors when it comes down to attracting the
demographic.

3. The actress we cast as Agnes in the opening was played
by Kaya, who is 17. This age is well within the target
audience and demographic which will enable the
audience to relate to the situation, if not more than
they already have with the location.
Agnes is portrayed as a young, care free, hardworking,
attractive girl, who cares about her job. However
there is a point when she steals from the till that the
separation of stepping into her shoes is lost. This
detachment from the character is the beginning of the
rest of the film and Agnes’ story. This is what
interests the audience and will encourage them to
continue to watch the rest of it.
Kaya would be in the demographic for the target
audience for this thriller, so the audience will not only
be able to connect with Agnes, but with the actress
Kaya as well.
By casting a major role as the target audience, this gives
an advantage to the audience as there is an
automatic link between the character and them.

4. Another main feature that would attract the target audience
was what actually happens in the opening. The character
Agnes, appears to be honest and trustworthy in the first
minute of the opening, however, when it shows her
taking the money it puts her into a new light and a
different perspective. She seems to be dishonest,
deceptive and like there is something below the surface
wrong, but she keeps it hidden. This is much like Lisbeth
Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, she
doesn’t tell Blomkvist what is really going on and ab out
her past, he lets her find out for his-self.
The cliff hanger in the opening, draws the audience’s
attention to the fact that you don’t know what is going to
happen to Agnes after she gets locked in the fridge. The
audience still don’t know the identity or the role of the
man in the thriller, he could be a detective or a criminal,
maybe someone involved in her past. Initially by locking
her in the fridge this is in keeping with the fears
expressed in question 2 and gender representation.
Many people in the demographic for ‘Angel Café’ may
have a fear of small spaces, anonymous men and being
trapped. This is another factor that attracts the audience
to watch the thriller.
In general, it is assumed that the male is the ‘bad guy’ who
gets locked up in prison, but the opening to ‘Angel Café’
could be either. This is a feature that attracts the
audience and will encourage them to continue to watch
the rest of the film.

5. Overall, there is a general
attraction to our thriller by our
target audience and hopefully
other demographics as well, to
make sure our thriller reaches
it full viewing potential.
We tried to target our audience
mainly through the characters,
action and possibly most
importantly, the location. The
fact that it isn’t in a glamorous
location means it is realistic
and people can relate to it
through personal experiences.
