This document provides an analysis of scenes from the short film "The Black Hole". It summarizes that the film is set in a dull office environment and introduces an unusual black hole. The black hole intrigues the audience and the main character discovers he can make money appear from it. Scenes use his expressions to show his growing greed and fascination as he takes more money. In the end, his greed leads to him getting trapped inside the cabinet by the black hole, seemingly conveying a message about the dangers of greed.
2. This is one of the first shots in the film. Firstly the setting and the character’s outfit imply that this a work place
environment/office and the shirt and tie is a worldwide icon for businessmen. The facial expression of the man
connotes he is tired and worn out and possibly in a ‘mid-life crisis’. The director has used dark and grey lighting to
resemble the man’s emotion making it seem as a dull environment. The setting also connotes that this short film is
based on present society as many people now work in an office due to de-industrialization.
3. When the black hole is ‘printed out’, this connotes to
the audience that something unusual is going to occur,
keeping them intrigued to know what happens next.
When the character puts his cup down on the black
hole, the editor used synthetic and non-diegetic
sound. This adds to the unusualness occurring and
every time this sound is used through out, the
audience will associate this sound with the black hole.
4. Lots of mid-shots and close ups are used to show
the character’s expression and fascination of
what he has just discovered (the black hole). It
could be that the audience have the same facial
expression as him as what is happening is very
unusual.
The shot above adds to the comedy genre which
may amuse the audience. Also, this scene reveals
the character’s personality as it connotes how
greedy he is being and taking advantage of the
black hole.
5. In this scene, he is looking back to see if anyone is
around which connotes that he is up to something
mischievous which he is.
In the end scene, the action connotes the
character’s greed as he takes more and more
money each time. This surprises the audience as
well as amuse them as this is quite an astonishing
scene. His facial expressions also connote how
happy and over-whelmed he is due to what he is
able to do now with the black hole.
6. Due to his greed, the black hole led him to get trapped inside the
cabinet which the audience did not see coming. I believe that the
short film sends out an message to the audience; the message
being not to be greedy and if they are, it destroys them.
