Inland fisheries cooperative societies in Tamil Nadu were established to improve fish production and livelihoods of inland fishermen. They are voluntary membership organizations that are democratically controlled. The average inland fisheries cooperative society in Tamil Nadu has around 100 members. They provide services like acquiring fishing rights, supplying fishing equipment, arranging loans, and marketing catches. However, some societies face issues like lack of cooperative spirit, large sizes, and loan defaults. The government runs schemes through these societies for housing, accident insurance, fish farming assistance, and leasing fishing rights to support fishermen.
