laboratory for water and food analysis to determine the levels of heavy metals (As, Pb, Zn, Hg, and Cu) in the products. Concentrations of the selected
heavy metals were determined by using inductively coupled plasma/optical emission spectroscopy (ICP/OES). As and Cu were not found in all
samples except in foundation sample found in concentration 0.0056 ppm for as and 0.006116 ppm for Cu, lead ranged between 0.03–0.92 ppm. Mercury
ranged between 0.04–1.49 ppm, and Zinc ranged between 0.026–0.091ppm.

Soil pollution involving the accumulation of excess heavy metals is toxic to humans and other mammalian life.1 The effect on animals can
ac–cumulate in the food chains and instigate public health concerns in the future. Normally, the exposure due to food chain transfer is chronic,
however, there are rare acute cases where direct ingestion of such pollutants is poisonous.2 Given the importance of the situation, the determination of
toxic heavy metals in the environment is essential.
The primary source of soil pollution can be at–tributed to the history of industrial/commercial activi–ties in certain areas.4 We have chosen to analyze
the soil at Northwestern University to highlight human factors and contributions to this pollution. Given the history of the Northwestern, there are
many areas of the campus that differ in properties such as the age of buildings, the proximity to bodies of water, areas of construction, and high
traffic. For use in our study, the campus was divided into areas A, B, C, D, E, & F (Figure 1). Since Northwestern has been regularly undergoing
construction in the past century, we pre–dicted that the areas with older buildings would have different metal concentrations when compared with areas
with more recent architecture. Due to the use of lead–based paint in old construction, we expect that there should be a higher concentration of metals

From the data given of the measured amounts of cadmium given at each stations along Cruddy Creek, there were extremely higher concentration
levels, 430 mg/kg dry weight total of cadmium from stations F, G, and H, upstream in comparison to a total combined amount of 315mg/kg dry weight
of cadmium from stations A, B, C, D, E, and the reference sites. Thus, the following locations have been identified as potential sources responsible for
the distribution of cadmium into Cruddy Creek; Atlas Batteries, Metal Plater, and Pacific Coal & Electric power plant due to their relevant histories and
proximities to the increased amounts of cadmium.
Atlas Batteries has been a part of Cruddy Creek since 1970. Their main objectives were lead–acid batteries recycling and now also recycling of
nickel–cadmium rechargeable batteries. They are a potential source of cadmium contamination because of their methodology of disposal of sulfuric
acid via an open, unlined pit which allows for chemicals to seep into the sediments at a much faster and easier rate. In addition, Atlas Batteries has a

exist for long. There are many countries today that do not have access to clean water. This necessity we the people of the United States of America
take for granted is not a normal occurrence in every country. With this paper we will look at five different countries with the most polluted water in
the world. We will see what is being done to help reduce thewater pollution and how the water pollution is effecting the economy is these countries.
The first country on the list is China. More specifically Linfen, China. In 2007 Linfen was dubbed by Time Magazine the most polluted city in the
world. The air was so dirty from all the coal mining that it would turn the laundry drying on the line black from all of the coal dust. The residents
literally choke at night dues to the coal dust. Every resident over 60 dies from lung disease. (Schmitt) It is also estimated that over half of Linfen's
well water is considered unsafe to drink. (motherboard) Clean water is a necessity for a thriving economy. Much of the pollution in Linfen is found
in the smog that is in the air, however, it is in the water as well. To live in Linfen and know that if you live to 60 you will probably die from lung
disease soon after. Although, Linfen is trying to improve their lifestyle withrecycling and trash cleanup they simply will not stop the coal mining
business. Which in all fairness is understandable since coal mining is the heartbeat of the economy for Linfen. However, there should be more
research into purifying their water and lowering the coal dust, but all in all things are looking up for Linfen. The residents are optimistic that they can
reduce the pollution and they can have a thriving economy too. The next place we look at is Haina, Dominican Republic. Haina has a problem with
battery recycling and smelting which has resulted in huge concentration of lead being pumped into their water. (science/nature) Lead poisoning is a
huge problem. Unlike some poisons that may wears off a little with time lead stays in the body and builds up until eventually the person drops dead.

FAO (1992) noted that the adulteration of water supplies from both natural and anthropogenic sources has impacted on the health and economic status
of populations. Human activities contribute to pollutants such as heavy metals, pesticides and herbicides into aquatic ecosystems. These anthropogenic
activities continuously increase the amounts in the environment. According to Malik et al. (2010), heavy metal pollution is burgeoning at an frightening
rate and has become an important worldwide problem Increase in population, urbanization, industrialization and agricultural practices as well as lack of
environmental regulations have further aggravated the situation (Gupta et al., 2009).
Heavy metals are assimilated or incorporated in water, sediments and aquatic biota evoking pollution in water bodies since they cannot be degraded
(Linnik and Zubenko, 2000; Malik et al., 2010). As the metal levels in many aquatic ecosystems increase, they raise the concern of metal

Mercury: The element mercury has the chemical symbol Hg; it is a silver colour and is a liquid at room temperature. Mercury has a high density and

Monnieri is one of the wetland plant used for the removal of heavy metal, lead (Pb) from the aquatic medium. Effluent was collected from the Lead
acid battery waste treatment plant. It is standardized to 5, 10 and 15ppm to observe the uptake by plant. Effluent was categorized as Direct Effluent
(DE), DE+Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and DE+Cow Dung Manure (CDM), where EDTA and CDM were used as a chelating agent to
influence in accumulation rate and degradation rate. Concentration of Pb in soil, plant (root and shoots), and effluent had been done to calculate the
degradation of Pb, Translocation factor (TF) and Bioconcentration factor (BCF). This experiment shows tremendous differences in wetland plant unlike

Abstract
In my biology class we conducted an experiment to determine if there was a direct correlation between the concentration of lead levels in soil and the
effect it has on plant synthesis and plant height. The specimen used in the experiment is a species of plant, Brassica rapa. Seeds of B. rapa were
careful planted within every cell of a cubical that was filled with six different concentrations of lead which was our treatment group and the control was
the cubical with no lead soil in it. Plant height and temperature were recorded with a thermostat and a mm ruler. The results show that lead
concentration does not have a relationship with plant height except in concentration of 100 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg. During this three–week
experiment, the mean of over a hundred students plant heights were recorded and all the student's plants showed similar results meaning lead–nitrate
concentrations in soil does not affect the growth.

This is because once lead is released into the environment, it corrodes the air, soil and water. Lead is also a main contributor to pollution. Plants, can
absorb the metal dust through their leaves. There are multiple ways that lead can enter the environment, one way is through mining, steel factories,
fertilizers, improper dispose of batteries and metal parts. I was unable to find an advantage of lead in the environment.
Lead is a health hazard for everyone. Lead is not visible to the eye, it has no smell and it has no taste. When lead goes into someone's body, it can
cause harm or damage to wherever it is in the body. Lead can even damage your blood stream. For example, it can damage red blood cells and limit
their ability to carry oxygen to organs and tissue. This can lead to anemia. This will negatively impact your well being.
There is an advantage to lead for the society because it is used to create bullets. Bullets offer protection for societies and smaller groups of people.
A negative is that some people use bullets not for protection but for offensive attacks. For example, there was a lot of controversy in America last
year because they were trying to differentiate when a police officer used his firearm as self defense, or to harm an innocent citizen. So while there are
advantages of the use of lead for the society, there are also disadvantages and negatives of lead.
