Placental Decention
tion
Placental abruption is a serious and potentially life threatening condition for both the mother and
fetus that requires urgent diagnosis and care from a multidisciplinary team. Although relatively rare,
occurring in approximately 0.4 to 1% of all pregnancies, placental abruption accounts for between
10 and 20% of all perinatal mortality and approximately 10% of all preterm births (Tikkanen M
2011) and is the leading cause of vaginal bleeding after the first trimester (Oyelese Y & Ananth CV
2006). The cause of placental abruption is not well understood however it is thought to often be
multifactorial and a woman's known risk factors and co–morbidities may increase the risk status of
this condition presenting although it is more often than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

that can increase the risk of a placental abruption (Victorian State Government; Better Health

Essay on The Stakeholder Theory by Thomas Donaldson
A stake holder, in general is defined as an individual or organization likely affected by the
performance of an organization. In "The stakeholder theory of the corporation: Concepts, evidence,
and implications" by Thomas Donaldson , he quotes Stanford research institution and calls stake
holders "those groups without whose support the organization would cease to exist."
Therefore a stakeholder can be thought of as some who both influences and is influenced by an
organization. According to Greasley (1999, p9) there are 3 types of stake holders: internal,
connected and external.
Internal stakeholders are described as "the managers and employees of a company." Connected
stakeholders are those that are beyond the immediate boundaries ... Show more content on

However, for this scenario it will be assumed that the stakeholder concept stands, and hence will
assume the stakeholder concept is infallible.
It will be assumed that the large mining company is publicly owned and is situated a more
economically developed country (MEDC). Therefore the company will have significantly weaker
influence from the government than a government owned company. It will also imply that trade
unions associated with the company will likely be strong, hence workers will have higher influence
than they would in a less economically developed country (LEDC) where unions would be weaker .
The above assumptions will also help in identifying stakeholders within the mining company;
stakeholders will be divided up into the 3 defined in Greasley (1999, p9).
Firstly, internal stakeholders, those connected directly to the firm. This group include will account
for anyone working within the firm. In the context of the mining company, this includes people like
miners, even jobs like those of a janitor in the building. However, it is important to note that it also
involves much more powerful stakeholders like senior management, who play a large role in the
decisions made by the company.
Connected stakeholders, will include groups like shareholders, customers and suppliers

REPORT
The Floundering Expatriate case study provides the right example of problems associated with the
global marketplace and when businesses and their leaders transcend physical and cultural
boundaries and they fail to adapt to cultural specifics. We consider that this report will allows
making an analysis that contains discussion on culture and communication issues along with
globalization.
This case takes place in 1995 and talks about the events of a globalization effort by Argos

It is clear that Donaldson has a lack of cultural understanding and sensitivity , for us this means, he
is unaware "of the cultural variables that can affect management decisions and he is not realizing
how much he is affecting Waterhouse projects, the company itself, other individual culture and his
leadership is also tainted and a number of sub–issues become evident. At the same time Donaldson
never remember or realized that in every culture ( in this case the European) there are different sub–
cultures and each one has different morals, goals, traditions, beliefs as well as different ways of
doing business and its expectations and they just conform only in varying degrees the national
culture.
The communication problems caused for the context of the communication were also very
important, because the European staff from Argos was formed by people from different European
countries and in some of them it is considered to have the lowest ranking communication context,
closely followed by other European countries, this means that nothing is implied from the message,
as everything will be clearly detailed. So the higher up the context ranking you go the more
information becomes implicit and if Donaldson would have consider that the multiple–choice survey
wouldn't have been inappropriate and Donaldson could have all the required info.
Communication is also an issue

Stephen Donaldson: A Short Story
The year was 1996. Vyvyan had just woken up, and after rubbing the sleep out of his eyes and
putting on his spectacles, he made his way into the kitchen. He filled the kettle that never seemed to
move too far from the stove with water, and set it on the burner. He noted the overcast morning, a
tad surprised by the weather, seeing that it was July, but not shocked. It was England, after all. If he
wanted cloudless mornings and constant sunshine, he would've moved to the Bahamas, he thought
to himself. He smirked at the idea, but the whistling teapot took him away from the inkling. He
turned off the stove, grabbed a cup from the cabinet, then got out a teabag from it's box,
conveniently placed near the kettle. He placed the bag, then poured ... Show more content on

He gave a funny smirk towards the camera, but in fairness, he was a funny looking guy at the time.
His hair, spiked in three different places, four star–shaped studs atop his forehead, a chain and
padlock around his neck. He was wearing that denim vest he practically slept in, some band teeshirt,
and jeans, rolled far enough up his calf to show off his grungy Doc Martens. As if that wasn't
enough, he sat his prop skeleton on his lap, as if he was some demented version of Saint Nicholas.
He sat back in his chair now, sipping his tea placidly. So much had changed since then. What would
his rambunctious, young–adult self think of him now? He had since gotten the studs removed, opted
for a more professional haircut– he dressed like Mike would now, button–up shirts, neckties, slacks,
dress shoes. At work he'd have on his white coat, a stethoscope always hanging over his neck. God,
his work– he never saw himself being a pediatrician when he was young. He always knew he
wanted to be a doctor, but at that point in his life, he was in it for the gore and shock value, but
nowadays, he wasn't sure how much of that he could take. After completing his courses at Scumbag
and transferring over to University of Edinburgh to finish his post–graduate studies, he found
pediatrics to be his calling. After that, he moved to Bristol, where he stayed for the last few

Analysis Of The Poem, God, Earth Walker And The Wanderer
From the first depiction of the subject of The Wanderer, "earth–stepper," "earth–walker," and "the
Wanderer," the translators Greg Delanty, E. Talbot Donaldson, and Alfred David differ in their
translations (Delanty l. 6, Donaldson 112, David l. 6). These differences build throughout the rest of
the poem, eventually leading the audience to arrive at different conclusions based on each
translation. By translating the Christian ideas in the poem (God, Earth, human) with distinct word
choice, Delanty, Donaldson, and David create translations of The Wanderer that demonstrate the
pitfalls of choosing inaccurate language.
Delanty, Donaldson, and David cannot agree on the proper translation of the most central element of
Christianity, God, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By focusing on replicating the poetic structure of the original Old English in Modern English,
Delanty betrays his background as a poet, compared to David and Donaldson, who are both
professors. By choosing poetic form over a more accurate translation, Delanty describes a concept
of an impersonal deity, a concept that did not exist in the time of the poem, and leads the audience to
the conclusion that the poet confused religious views. Conversely, by drawing on Biblical tradition,
David and Donaldson inject strong Christian sentiment into the poem that the original poet may not
have intended and suggest to the audience that the Christian God held a prominent role in Anglo–
Saxon religious life. In direct reference to God for the second time, Delanty's choice of "Shaper"
follows a different path than David's and Donaldson's "Mankind's Creator" and "Maker of
Mankind," respectively (Delanty l. 85, David l. 85, Donaldson 113). Delanty continues to develop
the deity of the poem in distinctly non–Christian terms. While the capitalization of the term clearly
indicates Delanty considers this moniker representative of God, he does not make a connection to
Christian teaching. This suggests Delanty believes the God, or higher power, of the poem does not
align with the God of Christianity and the poem has fewer connections to Christianity than the
translations of David or Donaldson would suggest. David and Donaldson use similar

Thesis: An examination of the case study New Protocol: How Drug's Rebirth as Treatment for

implications of a capitalist system, and once taken into account it is clear that Celgene Corp. is

Though many critics of Celgene would call the corporation's decision to raise prices a genuinely
greedy and selfish act, Smith sees nothing wrong with such a move. On this issue Smith states that
an individuals self–centered motives often improve society: "By pursuing his own interests he
frequently promotes that of the society more effectually than when he really intends to promote it"
(Donaldson, 167). Given Celgene's perceived self–centered actions, Smith would note that this type
of free market behavior is positive and is guided by an "invisible hand" which helps such behavior
to be beneficial to society as a whole. The next philosopher to be examined would argue that the
"invisible hand" that Smith speaks of is indeed separate from the political realm. Milton Friedman
continues with Smith's line of logic as he asserts that the chief concern of the businessman must be
to make a profit under socially acceptable means and that the defining of "social responsibilities"
must be left in the political sphere. Celgene's chief executive, John Jackson, was the primary force
behind the company's decision to raise prices. Jackson's actions are perfectly ethical according to
Friedman who writes, "What does it mean to say that the corporate executive has a "social
responsibility" in his capacity as a businessman? If this statement is not pure rhetoric, it must mean
that he is to act in some way that is not in the interest of

The Lassa Ward
Due to my interest in medicine, I chose to read The Lassa Ward: One Man's Fight Against One of
the World's Deadliest Diseases for the AP Human Geography summer assignment. The Lassa Ward
is authored by Ross I. Donaldson, who is a physician specializing in public health and tropical
medicine. St. Martin's Press, headquartered in New York, NY, published the novel in 2009. Dr.
Donaldson's memoir focuses on how he treated Lassa cases in Sierra Leone, in the midst of an
outbreak of the virus during the summer months of 2003. Thus, The Lassa Ward captivatingly
communicates the improvements needed in the current medical system in third–world Sierra Leone
through its detailed description regarding the primitive condition of medicine, the culture of ... Show

I enjoyed reading this novel due to the descriptive passages relating to culture and the captivating
nature of the author's main focus. All things considered, the only way The Lassa Ward could be
more informative was if all the action was taken away and it became strictly non–fiction. One
connection that I can form between the novel and my own life is the reaction and feelings that Ross
encountered after being left alone in the Lassa ward when Dr. Conteh departed. I, too, have felt the
same emotions the first time that I ran the A/V equipment at church all alone. I was slightly excited,
slightly concerned, and very anxious– just like what I can assume Ross felt. Now, my experience is
not of the same caliber as Dr. Donaldson's endeavor running the Lassa ward; however, we both
faced the same feelings regarding being unaccompanied for the first time. Another connection that I
can produce between the novel and my own experiences is that both Ross and I have both
encountered stepping foot onto foreign, tropical soil. A few years ago, I visited a few of the
Caribbean islands on a cruise, and I was surprised, similarly to Ross, to find some unusual building
styles and less–developed nation than America. A third connection that I can outline between the
novel and the world around me is the idea that antibiotics are the cure for

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Parents always warn their children to steer clear from shady and unreliable characters. Real life
situations are the target of this notion, but such a claim also stands true for literature. In F. Scott
Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, Nick, the narrator, is a shady character who disclosed no
personal information about himself and expected the viewer's trust in return. As a result, Scott
Donaldson, in his article "The Trouble with Nick" deliberates his opinion over what a terrible person
Nick is, however later determines that regardless of how shady Nick may be, he is still the only one
fit to narrate The Great Gatsby. Some of Scott Donaldson's views of Nick as an unreliable narrator
may stand true; however, it is definitely agreeable that Nick Carraway is the only acceptable narrator
for The Great Gatsby. Donaldson is correct for establishing Nick as an unreliable narrator.
Donaldson describes Nick as a "snob", someone who is "not entirely honest about himself"
(Donaldson), regardless of Nick's claim of being "one of the few honest men [he] knows"
(Fitzgerald 64). Nick is very arrogant, as no reliable person would run on self–proclaimed titles of
"honesty". He "dodges emotional commitments" (Donaldson), such as when he ran away from a
"girl out West" (Fitzgerald 24) whom he was rumored to be engaged with as well as when he ended
his relationship with Jordan "over on the telephone" (Fitzgerald 186). Nick, proves, however, to
have a special connection with Gatsby who

Donaldson Lufkin and Jenrette Case Study Essay
DLJ was founded in 1959 by William Donaldson, Dan Lufkin, and Richard Jenrette, which whom
set out with $100,000 to create an equity research firm that would serve institutional shareholders.
The firm went public in 1970 after gradually increasing the services provided to clients and
diversifying in the face of competition. DLJ was a member of NYSE and retained their membership
by offering shares of itself to the public. DLJ sold itself to Equitable in 1985, after facing capital
requirements. Equitable was a mutual life insurance company, owned by policyholders. Jenrette
joined Equitable as chief investment officer, and he later became chairman of the company in 1990.

They were unsure that DLJ could find new business lines to expand, in which would maintain its
profits margins and growth rates. Anther problem addressed dealt with maintaining post–IPO
profits. The stock market has increased from 1.896 in '86 to 4.789 in '95 thus creating an incentive
for DLJ to offer an IPO. Strategy involved being the IPO allowed employees to exchange their
compensation plans for shares and options in DLJ thus giving them an incentive to stay with the
company. There were also many advantages and disadvantages related to DLJ going public.
Advantages included DLJ increasing liquidity and allowing founders to harvest their wealth,
permitting founders to diversify, facilitated raising new corporate cash, established value for the
firm, and increasing the potential markets. Disadvantages included the cost of reporting, new
disclosure requirements, self–dealings, a possibility of inactive markets reducing price, the firm
losing some of its control, and a higher degree of investor relations had to be maintained. Equitable
chose an equity carve–out method for DLJ. This would allow them to retain at least 50% of the
equity of the subsidiary, so it could still consolidate its financial statements as well as file a
consolidated tax return. An obvious advantage of this method is the parent company doesn't lose
control over its subsidiary. Another advantage of this method and the spin–off method is

Parable of the Sadhu Essay
Parable of the Sadhu: Analysis from three general approaches.
The "Parable of the Sadhu" presents a complex situation which action immediate action was
necessary. Sadhu, an Indian holy man, was discovered naked and barely alive by a group of
multicultural mountaineers during their journey. Each ethnic group did a little to help the Sadhu, but
none assumed full responsibility. Their priority was in climbing the mountain rather than carrying
Sadhu to the village where other people could help him. Although the conditions of the trip were so
that once the mountaineers went down to the village they might not have been able to come back up,
the author of this essay still feels guilty for what was not done for the Sadhu (Donaldson 280). There

They focus on cultivating certain characteristics and look at every situation in terms of its potential
influence on the morale of the person (Donaldson 10). This method, although much more helpful
than utilitarianism, still produces an unclear response. On one hand, kindness and compassion are
both virtues that would be cultivated if the mountaineers decided to help the Sadhu and carry him to
the village. On the other hand, if mountaineers continue their journey virtues such as courage and
determination would flourish. It is difficult to decide which virtues are more important than others
and therefore, this method is too ambiguous to be applied to this situation.
Finally, there is deontology, also called non–consequentialism. Deontology, in general, focuses on
the motives of the act and the concept of "duty"(Camenisch 2). Kantian deontology assesses that
there is a Categorical Imperative – the highest moral principle that should govern all human actions.
This universal law is stated in two ways:
1) act in a way that one would act with anyone in the same situation, and so that one does not create
an undesirable world and 2) interact with people as human beings with rights and dignity rather than
means to an end (Camenisch 2). This moral principle would be the most fair and useful in the Sadhu
situation. McCoy's friend mentions in the essay that the mountaineers would have probably acted
differently if the Sadhu were a member of

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Research
Research is essential in academic study to allow a person to build on their existing knowledge.
There are numerous routes to research a subject, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
For this essay I am going to focus on four methods; internet, text books, television and professional
journals. In modern society a common research tool used is the internet, one if its key advantages is
its accessibility. Most people have access to the internet throughout the day and night; at home, on
the move via mobile phones and tablets, education premises, workplace and public libraries, this
creates flexibility and allows people to research information at a time and place convenient to them.
Another strength is the amount of information ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The content in text books is generally accurate and of good quality due to it being well researched
itself and being subject to review and quality checks by the publisher. In addition, the format of a
text book makes it easy to locate the information required and simple to book mark key points for
future use. Another strength is the details necessary for referencing the source are clearly presented.
Some disadvantages of using text books are the physical and financial barriers to accessing them.
Copies available in libraries may be limited and the time needed to visit a library could be restricted
by an individual's personal commitments. To purchase a text book can be expensive and often
difficult to source locally. In addition, written sources can become outdated, e.g. new theories and
discoveries could be made which consequently make the content inaccurate or irrelevant. Television
and radio as a research tool can be a welcome alternative to reading. The benefits being that
information displayed in a visual or audio format can in some instances be understood better than on
paper, presented in an engaging manner making it more interesting and holding the viewers'
attention. In addition, radio/podcasts can be listened to whilst additional tasks are completed, e.g.
driving, walking the dog. The negative side being the narrative can be at a fast pace resulting in note
taking being restricted and essential facts not

Henry Chadwick Sabermetrics
In 1858, Henry Chadwick, "the father of baseball", created the box score. This compilation of
names, numbers and abbreviations was one of the first attempts to document and summarize a game
of baseball. Chadwick would go on to create statistics like batting average (AVG) and earned run
average (ERA), two statistics that every baseball fan is familiar with. These statistics are the
foundation of Sabermetrics, advanced analytics that aim to evaluate players and quantitatively
measure their performance.
The term sabermetrics is the combination of two terms; saber comes from SABR or the Society for
American Baseball Research and metric, a standard of measurement. Starting in 1977, Bill James

The team that can score and prevent runs the best will win. And while this may sound obvious at
first, this is fundamentally what Sabermetrics tries to analyze and predict. Which players are
offensively accounting for the most runs, and defensively putting their teams in a position to prevent
runs.
As mentioned before, batting average (AVG) is a stat that defines many batters. A batting average
over .300 (30 percent of at bats (AB) end up in hits) would imply that a player is an above average
hitter. A .400 average has long been considered one the ultimate goals of batting, and also something
that is becoming unfeasible in modern baseball (the last time was in 1941). However, while many
players are defined by this number, it is incredibly flawed.
For example, we can look at Josh Donaldson of the Toronto Blue Jays. In 2015, he had a batting
average of .284, much higher than the league average of .255 (According to ESPN stats and
information). However, if we use conventional thinking, we might think that Josh Donaldson is just
an above average hitter, not the superstar that finished fourth in the AL MVP race. This is because
batting average does not account for walks and treats every hit the same. In short, Sabermetrics
changed this

Tobacco Stereotypes
Young people may start to be curious about smoking at some point in time in their life. They might
like the idea of doing something dangerous or something that makes them look like an adult. Young
people do not know that smoking and tobacco use can cause cancer and heart disease. They do not
look into the future to worry about the consequences. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause
of death in the United States (Persoskie, Donaldson, & King, 2016). In this cohort study, there was a
research if there was an interest about or ever–utilization of tobacco items among the US middle and
high school students changed from 2012 to 2014. The research data came from the 2012 and 2014

This award winning picture book takes the reader through a series of character meetings that ask
questions and build anticipation toward the conclusion. Donaldson uses the message that no matter
how small and insecure you are, using your brain and thinking through solutions can help you to be
respected and get the result wanted. Mallett (2016) highlights that through reading, hearing and
viewing children become enriched with imagination and creativity. The Gruffalo certainly helps
enrich this imagination and creativity within the reader. The words chosen by Donaldson are
carefully constructed to enable the rhyme and rhythm of the story to enact imagination and paint a
picture of the Gruffalo. The illustrations by Scheffler coincide with each other, intertwining and
creating thoughts and questions throughout the story. The most evident of this is when Donaldson is
describing the Gruffalo. The illustrations are so concise and are intelligently drawn so that even the
youngest of readers can understand. Picture books are meant to draw readers in and show how

Antiauthoritarianism In Australia Essay
Aussie VC recipient Mark Donaldson, wasn't always a hero. (Source: Yahoo News)
At home and abroad we like to be seen as a country who promotes free speech, equality before the

Australia is known internationally for Kangaroos, cork hats, and a pair of thongs. Australians

Australian history and popular culture over the years has influenced these stereotypes which

effectively participate in conflict resolution (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009).
The authors suggested that conflict is part and parcel of school reform and that in addition to being
able to deal effectively with conflict the successful principal needs to develop the ability for
bringing about consensus within the group, noting that interpersonal and intrapersonal skills were as
much or more important than knowledge (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009). In
the area of relationships it was noted that principals that are most effective are those that place high
value on people and relationships and that when this exists as a core part of the belief system of the

Huntington Disease Research Paper
Most of the carriers of Huntington disease are usually childhood victims (Donaldson, Marsden,
Schneider, & Bhatia, 2012). From this point of view, an increase in the length of the CAG section
causes the production of an abnormal form of the Huntington protein (Donaldson, Marsden,
Schneider, & Bhatia, 2012). The lengthened defective protein is then cut into smaller and defective
fragments that bind neurons together, which in turn disrupts their required functions of the brain.
The abnormal functioning leads to eventual death of the neurons in some regions within the brain,
which in turn leads to the symptoms of Huntington disease (Marks & Neill, 2007).
Inheritance
Huntington disease is featured by an autosomal inheritance that is dominant,

The Stewardship Theory : Lex Donaldson And James H. Davis
Stewardship can be described as "a concept that has inspired the activities of several organizations
whose mission is to preserve, protect, and maintain natural, social and economic assets for the
benefit of stakeholders and communities" (Contrafatto, 2014, para. 1). The stewardship theory
describes an environment where leaders feel empowered and trusted without the need of working in
a controlled and monitored environment. In this type of setting, the leaders and followers work
together collectively and have the best interest of the organization, its owners, and stake holders at
heart. Managers are committed to the business and gain satisfaction knowing the business is being
properly managed and successful.
The two theorists credited ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The premise behind this theory is that given the opportunity most people will help and support one
another. Attributes associated with the stewardship theory include leader's behaviors being aligned
with the objectives of the stakeholders or owners of the organization. Another attribute is the
autonomy of the managers and leaders without the threat of overarching domination or power.
This model is based on motivating people by appealing to their higher emotions and principles
which leads to serving others. Flynn defines a steward as someone who protects and takes charge of
the needs of others. This definition directly partners with the description of stewardship theory
whereby organizational leaders are stewards or overseers and will act in the best interests of the
business shareholders and owners. With this same concept, the stewardship theory supports an
environment in which leaders gain confidence, worth, and satisfaction as they feel trusted and
empowered to act as responsible stewards.
Another very important element of the Stewardship Theory is the more relaxed views on the roles of
the Chairman of the Board and the Chief Executive Officer. The agency theory supports a specific
delineation of the roles to make sure there is not a conflict of interest or an abuse of power such as
perks and bonuses which is in stark

Richard Donaldson's 'Richard Is At Hand'
After reading "Cinema and the Kingdom of Death" by Peter Donaldson's I narrowed my attention to
one section "Richard is at Hand". Donaldson talks about McKellen's adaptation by starting off with
a very important scene in the beginning of the film that shows how McKellen included media into
Shakespeare's play. Donaldson talks about mass media in the play by including "The Work of Art in
the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" by Walter Benjamin.
The first scene of the film starts off with a message being received on a machine, "RICHARD

Existing Copyright Law
Introduction
Copyright law is a part of not only music but many other products for example the software that you
are reading this document on has more than likely got copyright protection. But for the purpose of
this Document the main topic of copyright is going to be based around music.
Here is a few facts that may give you a better understanding of copyright as you read... Copyright
Law Came into existence as a spur from a concept from the "statute of Anne 1707". – Just like any
other law there are a number of contributing acts and statutes that come into play in order to enforce
the Law(s) involved. – Different parties involved in the copyright of a "product" may hold rights to
the content together as the "first owner(s) of copyright".
Body
When discussing matters in the respect of music, The copyright will only take effect once the
content is in a physical form, For example Tape, CD, HDD, USB And any other tangible device.
The recorded song will belong to the writer of the content. But if they are writing the song for
somebody else, say for example the writer of the "Super Mario" Theme tune they will own the
copyright to the song and are therefore entitled to an agreed negotiable percentage of the songs
revenue.
But as they were paid to Create the track for Nintendo, They will not be entitled to decide where the
track can & can 't be played as the song is now a product that has been sold and no longer belongs to

Essay On Nick Gatsby
In the article "The Trouble with Nick: Reading Gatsby Closely," Scott Donaldson argues that "Nick
Carraway is a snob" (98). Donaldson cites Carraway's intolerance toward those who do not know
how to act, Carraway's conflicting feelings about Gatsby, and Carraway's obsession with social
propriety as manifestations of his snobbery. According to Donaldson, a final revelation of
Carraway's aloof attitude is his static personality, a personality that refuses to learn from the
experiences of others. However, Scott Donaldson's argument is incorrect; Nick Carraway is not a
snob. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is an unpretentious man who
exemplifies tolerance and respect and learns from his experiences. Nick Carraway exhibits ... Show

Donaldson argues that by insisting on having been invited to Gatsby's party and in attempting to
thank Gatsby for inviting him to a party, Carraway "appears rather ridiculous" and is overly formal
and pretentious (101). Donaldson explains that Carraway's obsession with social rules reveals his
snobbery. Once again, Donaldson is incorrect; Carraway's actions are signs of respect, not of
ridiculous pretentiousness. Carraway does not attend one of Gatsby's parties until Gatsby formally
invites him. Waiting to attend a party is a sign of respect, not aloofness. By waiting for a formal
invitation to attend Gatsby's party, Carraway reveals his respect for Gatsby's privacy and home.
Additionally, Carraway spends the majority of his first party attempting to find Gatsby and thank
him for his hospitality. Again, Carraway's actions are polite and demonstrate respect for Gatsby.
Instead of rudely ignoring his host as so many of his fellow guests do, Carraway attempts to politely
thank Gatsby for his hospitality, illustrating his respect for Gatsby. Hence, Nick Carraway exhibits
reasonable social decorum and exemplifies respect, not arrogance, in his interactions with

early in the course and so less analyses were expected. Meaning, you will want to apply those
course concepts that suggest alternatives that actors in this case could choose, as relevant to where
you are in the course.
Kirkham had a 'strategy' on paper, but it was too vague to help select which New Product
Development to fund/cancel. The Harvard professors presented tools to help structure these
decisions, but division leaders did not want to see their projects cut, so they criticized the list and
delayed action, resulting in no development or implementation of a strategy.

Kirkham Instruments needed to become more closely coordinated between each division with
regards to the design of new features and the market introduction of the products while also
coordinating the development of new equipment with the analytical software features desired by the
customers Kirkham's strategy was to integrate the different systems of each division into an "all–
inclusive" product and also to involve all the divisions together with regards to product
development, instead of letting each division be responsible for just products within that division.
Mr. Donaldson chose Kathleen Quinn, Vice–President of R&D, to be responsible for coordinating
the development of new products. This proved to be quite a challenging task considering that each
managing director (of each division) still retained responsibility for the turnover and profitability of
their respective decisions and also for the strategies to achieve the goals of their divisions. In
addition, regardless of the trend of their customers in purchasing integrated systems, the majority of
each division's turnover came from the sale of stand–alone products. Again, Mr. Donaldson was
instrumental in developing a plan to move forward. He had read a report of three Harvard Business

development for nearly a decade and instructed Ms. Quinn to invite them to conduct a seminar

Copyright Law And The Music Industry : Beyond Blurred Lines
Copyright Law and the Music Industry: Beyond Blurred Lines
Introduction
Copyright law in today's music industry has become a tangle of litigation, complications, and
bitterness. Overly–complex, multi–layered regulations and laws, double to quadruple fees, and
arbitrary enforcement have led to a situation where songwriters and artists are hamstrung, the
industry is in crisis, and listeners will be the ultimate losers. In the past, there has been a tendency to
settle music copyright lawsuits before they go to court, thus keeping the problems from surfacing to
the media, until recently. As exemplified by the lawsuit awarding nearly $7.4 million1 to the heirs of
Marvin Gaye for copyright infringement of his song, "Got to Give It Up,"2 by Robin Thicke and
Williams in their composition "Blurred Lines,"3 this area is fraught with disagreement about its very
basis: can government really restrict musicians from using similar chord progressions and beats
when there are only so many possibilities available? It is becoming increasingly difficult to sort out
rip–offs from mere similarities, and the method of music distribution is changing faster than the law
can keep pace. Overall, the area of copyright laws as they pertain to music is a volatile one that
deserves consideration and possible revamping if reason, and musical expression, are to prevail.
History of Copyright Law Ironically, the first iteration of a copyright law was enacted in 16th–
century England as a means of

Ethical And Ethical Ethics Of The International Arena Essay
Conducting ethical business in the United States can be seen as clear cut to us. Although we are a
diverse nation, as U.S. citizens, most gain experience in the professional environment where ethics
is explained thoroughly enough that one is able to determine what is ethical and what is unethical.
When it comes to ethics in the international arena, Thomas Donaldson explained how that structure
almost does not exist since ethical culture, practices and the social norm is different in each country.
In the article, Donaldson debunked previous theories like cultural relativism and ethical imperialism
while coming up with a guideline that can help companies proceed in understanding cultural
difference while still being ethical. (Donaldson, 1996, pp. 48–52) As I read through the article, it
made me remember past events that had cultural dilemma while helping me find new ways to help
my ethical decision making skills. Key lessons from the article was the way Donaldson explained
how there was no exact way to deal with foreign business practices since they differ in each country.
Cultural relativism is defined as "no culture's ethics are better than any other's; therefore, there are
no international rights or wrongs." As cultural relativism lives by the saying "when in Rome, do as
the Romans do" but it proves to be inadequate since rules and regulations differ in each country. The
article states that cultural relativism is "morally blind". (Donaldson, 1996, pp. 48–52) Another

Analysis of Thirteen Days Directed by Robert Donaldson
"Good evening my fellow citizens...This Government, as promised, has maintained the closest
surveillance of the Soviet Military buildup on the island of Cuba. Within the past week,
unmistakable evidence has established the fact that a series of offensive missile sites is now in
preparation on that imprisoned island. The purpose of these bases can be none other than to provide
a nuclear strike capability against the Western Hemisphere." These are the exact words spoken by

The story was so intriguing in real life that not much needed to be changed. There are many
interesting scenes during the film that had many exact words from documents released after the fact.
One amazing scene takes place in the oval office where the president is still contemplating an air
strike and prepares to address congress regarding his actions. While this scene is very short in the
film, the director did a great job of picking certain important parts of the speeches. In reality, most
of the meeting deals with different men nitpicking parts of the speeches, something an audience
would not love to see, but Donaldson chose some poignant lines General Lemay states that the air
strike would be able to destroy 90% of the missiles in Cuba, but the President shrugs it off and goes
ahead with his original decision. The director emphasizes JFK's determination to stay with his own
original plan, something that allowed him to lead the country trough this troubled time.
I would like to discuss one interpretation that Donaldson used in the film, dealing with Costner's
character. I wish that Donaldson would have downplayed Kevin Costner's character because he tries
to steal the show, when in reality his character was not that influential in Kennedy's decision
making. There a few times when he takes control of the movie in places that are better left with him
in the background. For

The strategic issue(s) apparent in this case study revolve around three primary factors, firstly, the
perspective of the company in dealing with the socialization processes (or lack of) of its employees

seemingly unreasonable demand imposed upon Frank Waterhouse by Bill Loun, to ensure the
success of the program at the expense of dealing with Donaldson; whom in his own right could and

The company is possibly seeing a strong financial profit margin and is seemingly focusing on

under Waterhouse, but the issue here is what Donaldson brought with him and the lack of
decisiveness or tolerance on Waterhouse's part. It is also in part, due to unreasonable expectations
set by the company and Loun. Two years is simply not enough for someone to acclimate so quickly
to an unknown environment and complete a program that unifies that environment with others
similar to it at the same time. Waterhouse is frustrated with Donaldson because although the man
has quite the resume, he never took the time to actually supervise Donaldson or review his work, nor
did he try to take into account the unfortunate circumstances Donaldson was undergoing at home.
What Waterhouse wishes to avoid is the collapse of this program that was to fall under the network

acclimatization. He is left with a dilemma in which he cannot fire Donaldson because of Loun's

I enjoyed this book very much and consider it to be one of my favorites, mainly due to the
interesting events in the ward revolving around disease. It was interesting how Donaldson explained
the illnesses, symptoms, and medicines along with their purposes, without sounding like a textbook.
The Lassa Ward was definitely informative, but personally, I wish the author would have included
more description on the conflict in Liberia. The battle was brought up frequently, however, I felt as
if his explanations as to what was happening were somewhat redundant. Most of them were
constantly repeating that President Bush wouldn't send troops. Donaldson also informed us on some
cultural beliefs that the Sierra Leoneans hold. For instance, the children were afraid of white people,
because they thought they were ghosts, considering it is not often that they see somebody of another
race. Additionally, I can connect the book to my personal life and the world that I live in. When Dr.
Conteh leaves the ward in Ross's hands, Ross gets a massive load of responsibility placed upon him.
He is now in charge of keeping the ward in tact while trying to save multiple patients lives. A large
amount of responsibility comes with babysitting, so I can relate to Ross when I am left alone with
my brothers and sisters. While babysitting I have to keep a close eye on my siblings, so that they can
stay safe. In Ross's case he must pay attention to his patient's symptoms and treatment. Another way
I can connect to the book is on page 75, when Ross wonders if coming to Kenema was courageous
and an extremely dumb idea. Usually, I have many regrets whether it is over how much I studied or
spend my summer days. Even though my decisions typically aren't as deadly, I still tend to make
some impulsive decisions that can cause harm in the long run.

"Fate often saves an undoomed man when his courage is good"

harsh battle with Grendel's mother. He returns to king Hrothgar in the great hall of Heorot to say that
he has successfully completed his boast and killed Grendel's mother. Beowulf states that it has been

During the festivities celebrating Beowulf's victory the King predicts that Beowulf will become the
protector of the Geats until old age takes him and that he will be one of their greatest kings.
Christian and Pagan Elements
(p 28–31)
GRAPH The many references to God in the pages (28–31) of Beowulf reflect Christian beliefs as
opposed to pagan ones. In pagan worship, nature takes the place of God along with the belief that
inanimate objects contain spirits. The Geats would refer to Grendel and his mother as "God's
enemy" and "descendants of Cain." "Cain" is a biblical reference to the story of Cain and Abel. In
this story, Cain slays his brother Abel and consequently, is banished by God for all of eternity.
Because of his role as the first murderer, Cain is thought to be the father of all monsters.
Another example of Christianity which is evident in Beowulf is the fact that the "eye for an eye"
belief is practiced. During the second raid of Heorot by Grendel's mother, a very close friend of
King Hrothgar and great warrior named Aeschere is murdered. The monster, not abiding by the laws
of the time, is subject to the "eye for an eye" belief and then has to be murdered

The Conflict Of Mr. Donaldson
1. The first conflict is existed between Mr. Waterhouse and Mr. Donaldson. The reason of the
conflict is connected with different type of decision making between these two people. Another
reason is connected with Donaldson's attitude on working. It looks like that Donaldson is a selfish
person who always does anything according to his personal point of view. talking about the type of
conflict, it is avoidance: Mr. Waterhouse observes all the annoying things that performed by Mr.
Donaldson, but he did not react actively on it. Being on doubts regarding the future of Mr.
Donaldson, he represents an example of a justification type of account–giving response on a
conflict: he does not know what to do and finds justifications for his position Another conflict is
observed among Mr. Donaldson and Bettina Scheri, a woman, who organizes his programs, and is a
manager of Mr. Donaldson. A man seems to be very familiar and unthankful here, and the conflict
tends to look as competition, at least from Mr. Donaldson's point of view. talking about the types of
account–giving responses, it looks like that Mr. Donaldson is on the way of ideological account, he
does not want to cope with the problem. Probably, he thinks that he is better than his manager. 2.

The Ethical Issues Of Outsourcing Labor Essay
In the past decade, a pattern has emerged of large corporations choosing to contract their labour to
foreign countries in order to remain competitive. However, companies tend to relocate production to
the poorest nations where labour is cheap and output is chief. As a result, outsourcing labour has
made multinational companies subject to criticism for their immoral practices. This has created the
classic ethical debate as to whether it is possible for multinationals to engage in developing nations
in both an ethical and lucrative manner. For businesses, the difficulty is if one of these values should
be favoured over the other.
In this paper, I will argue that ethical dilemmas, like outsourcing labour, are best approached using
the algorithm suggested by Thomas Donaldson; showing that businesses can engage aboard within
an ethical manner. To begin I will examine how Donaldson's "guiding principles" and "core human
values" (Donaldson 173) can exist despite different values across cultures. Next, I will consider his
premise of ethical leadership and its use in the multinational firm. Having defended these positions,
I will then compare his work to that of Ian Maitland. I will specifically address how Maitland's
arguments do not successfully defend the human rights of international employees. This will
demonstrate that Donaldson's argument is more suitable for ethically–driven corporations and sets a
positive precedent for future ethical conduct.

Lassa Ward Book Report
I chose to read The Lassa Ward: One Man's Fight Against One of the World's Deadliest Diseases for
the AP Human Geography summer assignment. The Lassa Ward is authored by Ross I. Donaldson,
who received his doctor of medicine and master of public health degrees from the University of
California at Los Angeles. St. Martin's Press, headquartered in New York, NY, published the novel
in 2009. Dr. Donaldson's memoir focuses on how he treated Lassa cases in Sierra Leone, in the
midst of an outbreak of the virus during the summer months of 2003. Through explanations of his
surroundings and the ward where he treated his patients, the book addresses the medical need of the
region by describing the primitive condition of medicine occurring in the third–world country that is
Sierra Leone. Thus, The Lassa Ward effectively and captivatingly communicates the necessity
encompassing the current medical situation in Sierra Leone through its detailed descriptions and
arguments regarding the culture of the people living there and the region itself. ... Show more

Donaldson strived to demonstrate that the demand for a revised medical system is a desideratum.
The current environment in Sierra Leone does not compare to that of the United States and other
first–world countries due to the poor, conflict–ridden culture and landscape. The medical equipment
and supplies that are available are dilapidated and sub–par with that of what Dr. Donaldson
encountered in the United States. All of these descriptions that are given in the novel adeptly
portrayed the rudimentary conditions of the medical treatment available to the people of Sierra
Leone, and how, with proper structure and government support, the system could be improved

Placental Decention

  • 1. Placental Decention tion Placental abruption is a serious and potentially life threatening condition for both the mother and fetus that requires urgent diagnosis and care from a multidisciplinary team. Although relatively rare, occurring in approximately 0.4 to 1% of all pregnancies, placental abruption accounts for between 10 and 20% of all perinatal mortality and approximately 10% of all preterm births (Tikkanen M 2011) and is the leading cause of vaginal bleeding after the first trimester (Oyelese Y & Ananth CV 2006). The cause of placental abruption is not well understood however it is thought to often be multifactorial and a woman's known risk factors and co–morbidities may increase the risk status of this condition presenting although it is more often than ... In "The stakeholder theory of the corporation: Concepts, evidence, and implications" by Thomas Donaldson , he quotes Stanford research institution and calls stake holders "those groups without whose support the organization would cease to exist." Therefore a stakeholder can be thought of as some who both influences and is influenced by an organization. According to Greasley (1999, p9) there are 3 types of stake holders: internal, connected and external. Internal stakeholders are described as "the managers and employees of a company." Connected stakeholders are those that are beyond the immediate boundaries ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, for this scenario it will be assumed that the stakeholder concept stands, and hence will assume the stakeholder concept is infallible. It will be assumed that the large mining company is publicly owned and is situated a more economically developed country (MEDC). Therefore the company will have significantly weaker influence from the government than a government owned company. It will also imply that trade unions associated with the company will likely be strong, hence workers will have higher influence than they would in a less economically developed country (LEDC) where unions would be weaker . The above assumptions will also help in identifying stakeholders within the mining company; stakeholders will be divided up into the 3 defined in Greasley (1999, p9). Firstly, internal stakeholders, those connected directly to the firm. This group include will account for anyone working within the firm. In the context of the mining company, this includes people like miners, even jobs like those of a janitor in the building. However, it is important to note that it also involves much more powerful stakeholders like senior management, who play a large role in the decisions made by the company. Connected stakeholders, will include groups like shareholders, customers and suppliers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Stephen Donaldson: A Short Story The year was 1996. Vyvyan had just woken up, and after rubbing the sleep out of his eyes and putting on his spectacles, he made his way into the kitchen. He filled the kettle that never seemed to move too far from the stove with water, and set it on the burner. He noted the overcast morning, a tad surprised by the weather, seeing that it was July, but not shocked. It was England, after all. If he wanted cloudless mornings and constant sunshine, he would've moved to the Bahamas, he thought to himself. He smirked at the idea, but the whistling teapot took him away from the inkling. He turned off the stove, grabbed a cup from the cabinet, then got out a teabag from it's box, conveniently placed near the kettle. He placed the bag, then poured ... His hair, spiked in three different places, four star–shaped studs atop his forehead, a chain and padlock around his neck. He was wearing that denim vest he practically slept in, some band teeshirt, and jeans, rolled far enough up his calf to show off his grungy Doc Martens. As if that wasn't enough, he sat his prop skeleton on his lap, as if he was some demented version of Saint Nicholas. He sat back in his chair now, sipping his tea placidly. So much had changed since then. What would his rambunctious, young–adult self think of him now? He had since gotten the studs removed, opted for a more professional haircut– he dressed like Mike would now, button–up shirts, neckties, slacks, dress shoes. At work he'd have on his white coat, a stethoscope always hanging over his neck. God, his work– he never saw himself being a pediatrician when he was young. He always knew he wanted to be a doctor, but at that point in his life, he was in it for the gore and shock value, but nowadays, he wasn't sure how much of that he could take. After completing his courses at Scumbag and transferring over to University of Edinburgh to finish his post–graduate studies, he found pediatrics to be his calling. • 10. Analysis Of The Poem, God, Earth Walker And The Wanderer From the first depiction of the subject of The Wanderer, "earth–stepper," "earth–walker," and "the Wanderer," the translators Greg Delanty, E. Talbot Donaldson, and Alfred David differ in their translations (Delanty l. 6, Donaldson 112, David l. 6). These differences build throughout the rest of the poem, eventually leading the audience to arrive at different conclusions based on each translation. By translating the Christian ideas in the poem (God, Earth, human) with distinct word choice, Delanty, Donaldson, and David create translations of The Wanderer that demonstrate the pitfalls of choosing inaccurate language. Delanty, Donaldson, and David cannot agree on the proper translation of the most central element of Christianity, God, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By focusing on replicating the poetic structure of the original Old English in Modern English, Delanty betrays his background as a poet, compared to David and Donaldson, who are both professors. By choosing poetic form over a more accurate translation, Delanty describes a concept of an impersonal deity, a concept that did not exist in the time of the poem, and leads the audience to the conclusion that the poet confused religious views. Conversely, by drawing on Biblical tradition, David and Donaldson inject strong Christian sentiment into the poem that the original poet may not have intended and suggest to the audience that the Christian God held a prominent role in Anglo– Saxon religious life. In direct reference to God for the second time, Delanty's choice of "Shaper" follows a different path than David's and Donaldson's "Mankind's Creator" and "Maker of Mankind," respectively (Delanty l. 85, David l. 85, Donaldson 113). Delanty continues to develop the deity of the poem in distinctly non–Christian terms. While the capitalization of the term clearly indicates Delanty considers this moniker representative of God, he does not make a connection to Christian teaching. This suggests Delanty believes the God, or higher power, of the poem does not align with the God of Christianity and the poem has fewer connections to Christianity than the translations of David or Donaldson would suggest. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though many critics of Celgene would call the corporation's decision to raise prices a genuinely greedy and selfish act, Smith sees nothing wrong with such a move. On this issue Smith states that an individuals self–centered motives often improve society: "By pursuing his own interests he frequently promotes that of the society more effectually than when he really intends to promote it" (Donaldson, 167). Given Celgene's perceived self–centered actions, Smith would note that this type of free market behavior is positive and is guided by an "invisible hand" which helps such behavior to be beneficial to society as a whole. The next philosopher to be examined would argue that the "invisible hand" that Smith speaks of is indeed separate from the political realm. Milton Friedman continues with Smith's line of logic as he asserts that the chief concern of the businessman must be to make a profit under socially acceptable means and that the defining of "social responsibilities" must be left in the political sphere. Celgene's chief executive, John Jackson, was the primary force behind the company's decision to raise prices. Jackson's actions are perfectly ethical according to Friedman who writes, "What does it mean to say that the corporate executive has a "social responsibility" in his capacity as a businessman? The Lassa Ward is authored by Ross I. Donaldson, who is a physician specializing in public health and tropical medicine. St. Martin's Press, headquartered in New York, NY, published the novel in 2009. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I enjoyed reading this novel due to the descriptive passages relating to culture and the captivating nature of the author's main focus. All things considered, the only way The Lassa Ward could be more informative was if all the action was taken away and it became strictly non–fiction. One connection that I can form between the novel and my own life is the reaction and feelings that Ross encountered after being left alone in the Lassa ward when Dr. Conteh departed. I, too, have felt the same emotions the first time that I ran the A/V equipment at church all alone. I was slightly excited, slightly concerned, and very anxious– just like what I can assume Ross felt. Now, my experience is not of the same caliber as Dr. Donaldson's endeavor running the Lassa ward; however, we both faced the same feelings regarding being unaccompanied for the first time. Another connection that I can produce between the novel and my own experiences is that both Ross and I have both encountered stepping foot onto foreign, tropical soil. A few years ago, I visited a few of the Caribbean islands on a cruise, and I was surprised, similarly to Ross, to find some unusual building styles and less–developed nation than America. • 16. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald Parents always warn their children to steer clear from shady and unreliable characters. Real life situations are the target of this notion, but such a claim also stands true for literature. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, Nick, the narrator, is a shady character who disclosed no personal information about himself and expected the viewer's trust in return. As a result, Scott Donaldson, in his article "The Trouble with Nick" deliberates his opinion over what a terrible person Nick is, however later determines that regardless of how shady Nick may be, he is still the only one fit to narrate The Great Gatsby. Some of Scott Donaldson's views of Nick as an unreliable narrator may stand true; however, it is definitely agreeable that Nick Carraway is the only acceptable narrator for The Great Gatsby. Donaldson is correct for establishing Nick as an unreliable narrator. Donaldson describes Nick as a "snob", someone who is "not entirely honest about himself" (Donaldson), regardless of Nick's claim of being "one of the few honest men [he] knows" (Fitzgerald 64). Nick is very arrogant, as no reliable person would run on self–proclaimed titles of "honesty". He "dodges emotional commitments" (Donaldson), such as when he ran away from a "girl out West" (Fitzgerald 24) whom he was rumored to be engaged with as well as when he ended his relationship with Jordan "over on the telephone" (Fitzgerald 186). The stock market has increased from 1.896 in '86 to 4.789 in '95 thus creating an incentive for DLJ to offer an IPO. Strategy involved being the IPO allowed employees to exchange their compensation plans for shares and options in DLJ thus giving them an incentive to stay with the company. There were also many advantages and disadvantages related to DLJ going public. Advantages included DLJ increasing liquidity and allowing founders to harvest their wealth, permitting founders to diversify, facilitated raising new corporate cash, established value for the firm, and increasing the potential markets. Disadvantages included the cost of reporting, new disclosure requirements, self–dealings, a possibility of inactive markets reducing price, the firm losing some of its control, and a higher degree of investor relations had to be maintained. Equitable chose an equity carve–out method for DLJ. This would allow them to retain at least 50% of the equity of the subsidiary, so it could still consolidate its financial statements as well as file a consolidated tax return. • 20. Parable of the Sadhu Essay Parable of the Sadhu: Analysis from three general approaches. The "Parable of the Sadhu" presents a complex situation which action immediate action was necessary. Sadhu, an Indian holy man, was discovered naked and barely alive by a group of multicultural mountaineers during their journey. Each ethnic group did a little to help the Sadhu, but none assumed full responsibility. Their priority was in climbing the mountain rather than carrying Sadhu to the village where other people could help him. Although the conditions of the trip were so that once the mountaineers went down to the village they might not have been able to come back up, the author of this essay still feels guilty for what was not done for the Sadhu (Donaldson 280). They focus on cultivating certain characteristics and look at every situation in terms of its potential influence on the morale of the person (Donaldson 10). This method, although much more helpful than utilitarianism, still produces an unclear response. On one hand, kindness and compassion are both virtues that would be cultivated if the mountaineers decided to help the Sadhu and carry him to the village. On the other hand, if mountaineers continue their journey virtues such as courage and determination would flourish. It is difficult to decide which virtues are more important than others and therefore, this method is too ambiguous to be applied to this situation. Finally, there is deontology, also called non–consequentialism. Deontology, in general, focuses on the motives of the act and the concept of "duty"(Camenisch 2). Kantian deontology assesses that there is a Categorical Imperative – the highest moral principle that should govern all human actions. This universal law is stated in two ways: 1) act in a way that one would act with anyone in the same situation, and so that one does not create an undesirable world and 2) interact with people as human beings with rights and dignity rather than means to an end (Camenisch 2). This moral principle would be the most fair and useful in the Sadhu situation. • 22. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Research Research is essential in academic study to allow a person to build on their existing knowledge. There are numerous routes to research a subject, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. For this essay I am going to focus on four methods; internet, text books, television and professional journals. In modern society a common research tool used is the internet, one if its key advantages is its accessibility. Most people have access to the internet throughout the day and night; at home, on the move via mobile phones and tablets, education premises, workplace and public libraries, this creates flexibility and allows people to research information at a time and place convenient to them. Another strength is the amount of information ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The content in text books is generally accurate and of good quality due to it being well researched itself and being subject to review and quality checks by the publisher. In addition, the format of a text book makes it easy to locate the information required and simple to book mark key points for future use. Another strength is the details necessary for referencing the source are clearly presented. Some disadvantages of using text books are the physical and financial barriers to accessing them. Copies available in libraries may be limited and the time needed to visit a library could be restricted by an individual's personal commitments. To purchase a text book can be expensive and often difficult to source locally. In addition, written sources can become outdated, e.g. new theories and discoveries could be made which consequently make the content inaccurate or irrelevant. Television and radio as a research tool can be a welcome alternative to reading. The benefits being that information displayed in a visual or audio format can in some instances be understood better than on paper, presented in an engaging manner making it more interesting and holding the viewers' attention. In addition, radio/podcasts can be listened to whilst additional tasks are completed, e.g. driving, walking the dog. The negative side being the narrative can be at a fast pace resulting in note taking being restricted and essential facts not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Henry Chadwick Sabermetrics In 1858, Henry Chadwick, "the father of baseball", created the box score. This compilation of names, numbers and abbreviations was one of the first attempts to document and summarize a game of baseball. Chadwick would go on to create statistics like batting average (AVG) and earned run average (ERA), two statistics that every baseball fan is familiar with. These statistics are the foundation of Sabermetrics, advanced analytics that aim to evaluate players and quantitatively measure their performance. The term sabermetrics is the combination of two terms; saber comes from SABR or the Society for American Baseball Research and metric, a standard of measurement. And while this may sound obvious at first, this is fundamentally what Sabermetrics tries to analyze and predict. Which players are offensively accounting for the most runs, and defensively putting their teams in a position to prevent runs. As mentioned before, batting average (AVG) is a stat that defines many batters. A batting average over .300 (30 percent of at bats (AB) end up in hits) would imply that a player is an above average hitter. A .400 average has long been considered one the ultimate goals of batting, and also something that is becoming unfeasible in modern baseball (the last time was in 1941). However, while many players are defined by this number, it is incredibly flawed. For example, we can look at Josh Donaldson of the Toronto Blue Jays. In 2015, he had a batting average of .284, much higher than the league average of .255 (According to ESPN stats and information). However, if we use conventional thinking, we might think that Josh Donaldson is just an above average hitter, not the superstar that finished fourth in the AL MVP race. This is because batting average does not account for walks and treats every hit the same. In short, Sabermetrics changed this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mallett (2016) highlights that through reading, hearing and viewing children become enriched with imagination and creativity. (Source: Yahoo News) At home and abroad we like to be seen as a country who promotes free speech, equality before the law, and an array of other freedoms. However some misinterpret this promotion of freedom for a more antiauthoritarian attitude. Australia is known internationally for Kangaroos, cork hats, and a pair of thongs. Australians themselves are known as easy going, relaxed sports fans, who seem to have our own style of doing things. The authors suggested that conflict is part and parcel of school reform and that in addition to being able to deal effectively with conflict the successful principal needs to develop the ability for bringing about consensus within the group, noting that interpersonal and intrapersonal skills were as much or more important than knowledge (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009). Davis Stewardship can be described as "a concept that has inspired the activities of several organizations whose mission is to preserve, protect, and maintain natural, social and economic assets for the benefit of stakeholders and communities" (Contrafatto, 2014, para. 1). The stewardship theory describes an environment where leaders feel empowered and trusted without the need of working in a controlled and monitored environment. This model is based on motivating people by appealing to their higher emotions and principles which leads to serving others. Flynn defines a steward as someone who protects and takes charge of the needs of others. This definition directly partners with the description of stewardship theory whereby organizational leaders are stewards or overseers and will act in the best interests of the business shareholders and owners. With this same concept, the stewardship theory supports an environment in which leaders gain confidence, worth, and satisfaction as they feel trusted and empowered to act as responsible stewards. Another very important element of the Stewardship Theory is the more relaxed views on the roles of the Chairman of the Board and the Chief Executive Officer. But for the purpose of this Document the main topic of copyright is going to be based around music. Here is a few facts that may give you a better understanding of copyright as you read... Copyright Law Came into existence as a spur from a concept from the "statute of Anne 1707". – Just like any other law there are a number of contributing acts and statutes that come into play in order to enforce the Law(s) involved. – Different parties involved in the copyright of a "product" may hold rights to the content together as the "first owner(s) of copyright". Copyright Law And The Music Industry : Beyond Blurred Lines Copyright Law and the Music Industry: Beyond Blurred Lines Introduction Copyright law in today's music industry has become a tangle of litigation, complications, and bitterness. Overly–complex, multi–layered regulations and laws, double to quadruple fees, and arbitrary enforcement have led to a situation where songwriters and artists are hamstrung, the industry is in crisis, and listeners will be the ultimate losers. In the past, there has been a tendency to settle music copyright lawsuits before they go to court, thus keeping the problems from surfacing to the media, until recently. As exemplified by the lawsuit awarding nearly $7.4 million1 to the heirs of Marvin Gaye for copyright infringement of his song, "Got to Give It Up,"2 by Robin Thicke and Williams in their composition "Blurred Lines,"3 this area is fraught with disagreement about its very basis: can government really restrict musicians from using similar chord progressions and beats when there are only so many possibilities available? It is becoming increasingly difficult to sort out rip–offs from mere similarities, and the method of music distribution is changing faster than the law can keep pace. Overall, the area of copyright laws as they pertain to music is a volatile one that deserves consideration and possible revamping if reason, and musical expression, are to prevail. When it comes to ethics in the international arena, Thomas Donaldson explained how that structure almost does not exist since ethical culture, practices and the social norm is different in each country. In the article, Donaldson debunked previous theories like cultural relativism and ethical imperialism while coming up with a guideline that can help companies proceed in understanding cultural difference while still being ethical. (Donaldson, 1996, pp. 48–52) As I read through the article, it made me remember past events that had cultural dilemma while helping me find new ways to help my ethical decision making skills. Key lessons from the article was the way Donaldson explained how there was no exact way to deal with foreign business practices since they differ in each country. Cultural relativism is defined as "no culture's ethics are better than any other's; therefore, there are no international rights or wrongs." As cultural relativism lives by the saying "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" but it proves to be inadequate since rules and regulations differ in each country. Within the past week, unmistakable evidence has established the fact that a series of offensive missile sites is now in preparation on that imprisoned island. The purpose of these bases can be none other than to provide a nuclear strike capability against the Western Hemisphere." These are the exact words spoken by John F. Kennedy in his address to the nation on October 22, 1962. The president had finally told the American people what was happening with the crisis in Cuba and what that government was determined to do about it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The story was so intriguing in real life that not much needed to be changed. There are many interesting scenes during the film that had many exact words from documents released after the fact. One amazing scene takes place in the oval office where the president is still contemplating an air strike and prepares to address congress regarding his actions. While this scene is very short in the film, the director did a great job of picking certain important parts of the speeches. In reality, most of the meeting deals with different men nitpicking parts of the speeches, something an audience would not love to see, but Donaldson chose some poignant lines General Lemay states that the air strike would be able to destroy 90% of the missiles in Cuba, but the President shrugs it off and goes ahead with his original decision. The director emphasizes JFK's determination to stay with his own original plan, something that allowed him to lead the country trough this troubled time. I would like to discuss one interpretation that Donaldson used in the film, dealing with Costner's character. I wish that Donaldson would have downplayed Kevin Costner's character because he tries to steal the show, when in reality his character was not that influential in Kennedy's decision making. There a few times when he takes control of the movie in places that are better left with him in the background. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Strategic Issue ( S ) The strategic issue(s) apparent in this case study revolve around three primary factors, firstly, the perspective of the company in dealing with the socialization processes (or lack of) of its employees within an international spectrum (coming from an American background). Secondly, the staunch and seemingly unreasonable demand imposed upon Frank Waterhouse by Bill Loun, to ensure the success of the program at the expense of dealing with Donaldson; whom in his own right could and might have been a good choice if it were not for the multitude of issues that came with his arrival at Argos in Germany. Thirdly, there is a lack of employee–to–employee communication that was seemingly the core of the issues that were arising; revolving around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The company is possibly seeing a strong financial profit margin and is seemingly focusing on internal affairs or in this case unification and solidifying core areas that have been deemed worthy of such focus. The company is willing to bring Donaldson from overseas and hand him the reigns under Waterhouse, but the issue here is what Donaldson brought with him and the lack of decisiveness or tolerance on Waterhouse's part. It is also in part, due to unreasonable expectations set by the company and Loun. Two years is simply not enough for someone to acclimate so quickly to an unknown environment and complete a program that unifies that environment with others similar to it at the same time. Waterhouse is frustrated with Donaldson because although the man has quite the resume, he never took the time to actually supervise Donaldson or review his work, nor did he try to take into account the unfortunate circumstances Donaldson was undergoing at home. What Waterhouse wishes to avoid is the collapse of this program that was to fall under the network that he personally set–up, due to Donaldson's lack of resourcefulness, drive and difficulty in acclimatization. He is left with a dilemma in which he cannot fire Donaldson because of Loun's expectations, "make it work, I brought you the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. The Lassa Ward Battling disease and personal connection, the life of a soon to be doctor can come with many opportunities, as well as regretful decisions. The Lassa Ward, a memoir told by Ross I. Donaldson, tells the true story of a medical student who embarks on a journey to Western Africa to face one of the most fatal diseases in the world. Published by St. Martin's Press, in 2009, in the city of New York, this story takes place in the early 2000s across many villages and refugee camps in Sierra Leone. The struggle of disease, differing cultural beliefs, and heartbreak due to a loss from death are the main topics of the book, although Donaldson does not fail to intertwine the issue revolving around the Rebel United Front in Liberia. In this moving book, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I enjoyed this book very much and consider it to be one of my favorites, mainly due to the interesting events in the ward revolving around disease. It was interesting how Donaldson explained the illnesses, symptoms, and medicines along with their purposes, without sounding like a textbook. The Lassa Ward was definitely informative, but personally, I wish the author would have included more description on the conflict in Liberia. The battle was brought up frequently, however, I felt as if his explanations as to what was happening were somewhat redundant. Most of them were constantly repeating that President Bush wouldn't send troops. Donaldson also informed us on some cultural beliefs that the Sierra Leoneans hold. For instance, the children were afraid of white people, because they thought they were ghosts, considering it is not often that they see somebody of another race. Additionally, I can connect the book to my personal life and the world that I live in. When Dr. Conteh leaves the ward in Ross's hands, Ross gets a massive load of responsibility placed upon him. He is now in charge of keeping the ward in tact while trying to save multiple patients lives. A large amount of responsibility comes with babysitting, so I can relate to Ross when I am left alone with my brothers and sisters. While babysitting I have to keep a close eye on my siblings, so that they can stay safe. In Ross's case he must pay attention to his patient's symptoms and treatment. Another way I can connect to the book is on page 75, when Ross wonders if coming to Kenema was courageous and an extremely dumb idea. Usually, I have many regrets whether it is over how much I studied or spend my summer days. Even though my decisions typically aren't as deadly, I still tend to make some impulsive decisions that can cause harm in the long run. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Donaldson's Beowulf Essay Donaldson's Beowulf "Fate often saves an undoomed man when his courage is good" –Beowulf (Donaldson, 12) The passage that I analyzed spans the action when Beowulf returns to the halls of Heorot after a harsh battle with Grendel's mother. He returns to king Hrothgar in the great hall of Heorot to say that he has successfully completed his boast and killed Grendel's mother. Beowulf states that it has been a very difficult underwater battle and that he has barely escaped with his life, "The fight would have been ended straightway if God had not guarded me" (Donaldson, 29). Beowulf mentions this due to the fact that the sword given to him by Unferth, called Hrunting, was powerless against Grendel's Mother. Hrunting is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the festivities celebrating Beowulf's victory the King predicts that Beowulf will become the protector of the Geats until old age takes him and that he will be one of their greatest kings. Christian and Pagan Elements (p 28–31) GRAPH The many references to God in the pages (28–31) of Beowulf reflect Christian beliefs as opposed to pagan ones. In pagan worship, nature takes the place of God along with the belief that inanimate objects contain spirits. The Geats would refer to Grendel and his mother as "God's enemy" and "descendants of Cain." "Cain" is a biblical reference to the story of Cain and Abel. In this story, Cain slays his brother Abel and consequently, is banished by God for all of eternity. Because of his role as the first murderer, Cain is thought to be the father of all monsters. Another example of Christianity which is evident in Beowulf is the fact that the "eye for an eye" belief is practiced. During the second raid of Heorot by Grendel's mother, a very close friend of King Hrothgar and great warrior named Aeschere is murdered. The monster, not abiding by the laws of the time, is subject to the "eye for an eye" belief and then has to be murdered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. The Conflict Of Mr. Donaldson 1. The first conflict is existed between Mr. Waterhouse and Mr. Donaldson. The reason of the conflict is connected with different type of decision making between these two people. Another reason is connected with Donaldson's attitude on working. It looks like that Donaldson is a selfish person who always does anything according to his personal point of view. talking about the type of conflict, it is avoidance: Mr. Waterhouse observes all the annoying things that performed by Mr. Donaldson, but he did not react actively on it. Being on doubts regarding the future of Mr. Donaldson, he represents an example of a justification type of account–giving response on a conflict: he does not know what to do and finds justifications for his position Another conflict is observed among Mr. Donaldson and Bettina Scheri, a woman, who organizes his programs, and is a manager of Mr. Donaldson. A man seems to be very familiar and unthankful here, and the conflict tends to look as competition, at least from Mr. Donaldson's point of view. talking about the types of account–giving responses, it looks like that Mr. Donaldson is on the way of ideological account, he does not want to cope with the problem. Probably, he thinks that he is better than his manager. 2. talking about the motivators that drive two main people in the study, Mr. Waterhouse and Mr. Donaldson, it is essential to show that both are related on Maslow hierarchy of needs. After the murder of Rizzio, Mary realized that Darnley, the playboy who was too interested in hunting and women, was unfitted for the political power in front of him. Mary reconciled with Darnley, but after Rizzio's murder, it was not sincere. Mary and Darnley never cohabited again, even after the birth of their son. In chapter four, Mary is looking for the support of a man who is of assured loyalty. The strongest candidate then was James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell. Bothwell's family was one of the most important in Scotland, with wide lands of their own and wider political leadership of other distance relatives. In February of 1567, Darnley was ill and staying at "the old Provost's Lodging". At two in the morning, an explosion demolished the lodge and Darnley was found outside, dead. Mary had visited him earlier that week for she was trying to reconcile with Darnley. She feared she was pregnant with a child and that everyone would know it could not be Darnley's. After Darnely's death, Bothwell abducted Mary, and they were married with protestant rites. By this, her people revolted for she "had thrown away her reputation, shown her approval of her husband's murder, and abandoned the church of her fathers". Even though she sacrificed her thrown for Bothwell, the marriage brought her no happiness. Before the marriage even took place, opposition was being formed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. The Ethical Issues Of Outsourcing Labor Essay In the past decade, a pattern has emerged of large corporations choosing to contract their labour to foreign countries in order to remain competitive. However, companies tend to relocate production to the poorest nations where labour is cheap and output is chief. As a result, outsourcing labour has made multinational companies subject to criticism for their immoral practices. This has created the classic ethical debate as to whether it is possible for multinationals to engage in developing nations in both an ethical and lucrative manner. For businesses, the difficulty is if one of these values should be favoured over the other. In this paper, I will argue that ethical dilemmas, like outsourcing labour, are best approached using the algorithm suggested by Thomas Donaldson; showing that businesses can engage aboard within an ethical manner. To begin I will examine how Donaldson's "guiding principles" and "core human values" (Donaldson 173) can exist despite different values across cultures. Next, I will consider his premise of ethical leadership and its use in the multinational firm. Having defended these positions, I will then compare his work to that of Ian Maitland. I will specifically address how Maitland's arguments do not successfully defend the human rights of international employees. This will demonstrate that Donaldson's argument is more suitable for ethically–driven corporations and sets a positive precedent for future ethical conduct. When faced with the moral ... Canadian Journal of Political Science 47 no.1 (2014): 23–45. http://resolver.scholarsportal.info/resolve/00084239/v47i0001/23_ubacattot," pertains to domesticated animal's having the right to be considered citizens. However, this article was written as a rebuttal to an earlier journal article by Emma Planinc, "¬¬¬¬ Democracy, Despots and Wolves: On the Dangers of Zoopolis 's Animal Citizen". "Unruly Beasts: Animal Citizens and the Threat of Tyranny" provides the reader with a main thesis, "domesticated animals deserve the right to be citizens in the polis regardless of tyranny," this is backed up by main ideas and supported by their arguments. Kymlicka's credentials include, being a Professor of Philosophy and having a Canadian Research Chair in the Political Philosophy field, having a B.A. in political studies and philosophy and his D.Phil. in philosophy. Therefore, the article "Unruly Beasts: Animal Citizens and the Threat of Tyranny" is a reliable source to consider when exploring the topic of animal citizenship. The article "Unruly Beasts: Animal Citizens and the Threat of Tyranny" contains two main issues. One of these issues is that tyranny would have on democracy because of animal citizenship and the second issue being, should domesticated animals (or as referred to in the article Da's) have the right to citizenship. • 78. Lassa Ward Book Report I chose to read The Lassa Ward: One Man's Fight Against One of the World's Deadliest Diseases for the AP Human Geography summer assignment. The Lassa Ward is authored by Ross I. Donaldson, who received his doctor of medicine and master of public health degrees from the University of California at Los Angeles. St. Martin's Press, headquartered in New York, NY, published the novel in 2009. Dr. Donaldson's memoir focuses on how he treated Lassa cases in Sierra Leone, in the midst of an outbreak of the virus during the summer months of 2003. Through explanations of his surroundings and the ward where he treated his patients, the book addresses the medical need of the region by describing the primitive condition of medicine occurring in the third–world country that is Sierra Leone. Thus, The Lassa Ward effectively and captivatingly communicates the necessity encompassing the current medical situation in Sierra Leone through its detailed descriptions and arguments regarding the culture of the people living there and the region itself. ...
