2. Director
X
Born in 1975 as Julien Christian Lutz
in Toronto Canada, Director X has
gone on to be one of the most in
demand and professional music
video directors in the music industry
in recent years.
He is also know as X, and Little X and
also has a clothing range called X Fit.
A protégé of Hype Williams, whose
videos included that of Kanye Wests
‘All of the Lights’ and ‘Golddigger’ as
well as Will Smiths ‘Getting’ Jiggy
Wit it’. He is known for his high
budget and distinctive music videos
for artists such as Rihanna, Iggy
Azalea and most notably Drake, who
have collaborated several times.
His trademark is tweaking the letterbox format of a
video. Therefore rather than just having/ using black bars
on the top and bottom of an image, many of his videos
feature the bars opening vertically or horizontally to
reveal the video and doing so at the end to close, similar
to a letterbox.
His videography dates back to 1998, with it
including Nelly ‘Hot in here’, Usher ‘Got it Bad’,
Mario ‘Let me Love You’ and in more recent years,
Drake ‘worst Behaviour, Hotline Bling’, Rihanna
‘Pon De Replay’, ‘Work’ and Little Mix ‘Black
Magic’.
He has also been involved in a
small amount of short films like
that of 2015’s Across The Line
which won Best Atlantic Feature
Film. He has also been nominated
for BET award and a Best Director
VMA.
