Social Media And Its Effects On The Lesbian Community
Heterosexism is where one believes that liking or loving the opposite sex is the "Norm"
or being homosexual is not right. Limiting student success can come in multiple forms:
heterosexism and homophobia limit student success by promoting social media norms, being
discriminatory towards the homosexual community, judging before understanding, and not
taking their own path and folding under peer pressure.
There is no technical problem with homosexuality except the ones that society creates
through social media and the community "norm". A social or community "norm" is hard to
change and causes an effect on the homosexual community. Stereotypes and the way
homosexual community are portrayed in the media are starting to make what ... Show more content

on not going against the "norm" that people aren't sure if they are for or against something, truth
be told their just going against what everyone else says when most of the time celebrities do it
for publicity or attention. Furthermore, Discrimination has been around for years taking people
through hardships especially the homosexual community. "Heterosexism is defined as a setting–
level process that systematically privileges heterosexuality relative to homosexuality, based on
the assumption that heterosexuality, as well as heterosexual power and privilege are the norm
and the ideal"(Chesir–Teran 267). Homosexuals experience discrimination through schools, jobs,
stores and in public places. Schools are one of the most easily spotted discrimination areas for
the homosexual community. For example, statistics for bullying in high schools are higher for
any other place. More than half of the suicides committed are from bullying more than half that
percentage is the homosexual community. According to recent gay bullying statistics, gay and
lesbian teens are two to three times as more likely to commit teen suicide than other youths.
About 30 percent of all completed suicides are due to sexual identity crisis. Students that are
LGBT are reported more likely to miss school due to the fact that they feel unsafe or are being
bullied because

Sexual Identity And Sexuality
Sexual Identity is what a person is attracted to sexually and emotionally. People tend to categorize
others depending on their choice of sex. A recent study on the article, "Lesbian Identity
Performances in the Workplace, Social Class, and Psychological Health" by Elizabeth McDermott
(2006), has shown that people rather not identify their sexual identity so they can be welcomed into
their workplace. But, it should not matter about a person's sexuality because it would not make them
less of a man or woman to perform their job. Elizabeth McDermott is a Senior Lecturer at Lancaster
University; whose research is categorized with mental health inequality in relations to age, sexuality,
gender, and social class. Another study was conducted on an article with teenagers; ".... It's a big
deal stresses and strains of managing sexual identity(s) on Facebook" by Rubin and McClelland
(2015); some feel as if their family and friends would not accept them if they mentioned their
sexuality on social media or announce it to anyone. Jennifer Rubin work at the University of
Michigan Women's Studies and her research explore how social class shape people's sexuality and
gender. While, Sara McClelland works at the University of Michigan Psychology and her research
focus on adolescent sexual development and sexual health. Both articles describe the slander that the
LGBTQ community deals with when revealing themselves. McDermott (2006) did a study about

Pros And Cons Of Same Sex Marriage In Australia
There are many articles written about the debate of same–sex marriage with many varying opinions
on whether it is a good thing or a bad thing. Everyone has their own opinion about same–sex
marriage. But they don't seem to understand how many people it will effect in Australia if it's a
majority "No" vote. An article called 'Census: Same–Sex Couples Still A Statistically Small Percent
Of Australians'. The article states that 40%–50% of the population is gay. Which means of a
population of nearly 24.5 million people roughly half is gay. So why not allow gay marriage to
happen here in Australia? There is already so many countries that have already allowed it to happen
in their country in the last 20 years.
There are many examples of LGBTIQ in books, movies, TV shows and with Celebrities. But guess
what they are accepted by their fans, and their peers without a second thought. Some examples are;
in 'The mortal Instruments series' by Cassandra Clare she wrote not one but two characters who are
apart of the LGBTIQ community and both characters aren't in the background but are two of the
many main characters in the series. These characters are Magnus Bane who holds a very important
position through the series being the high warlock of Brooklyn and all, and Alec Lightwood, who is
very important to the series being amazing with a bow and arrow and being a Shadowhunter. All of
the fans of the series have a favourite couple in the series and for this one it just so happens to be the

Running head: HOW HETERONORMATIVITY AND MEDIA STEREOTYPES IN SOCIETY
INFLUENCES HOW QUEER PEOPLE EXPRESS THEIR SEXUALITIES
How heteronormativity and media stereotypes influences how queer people express their sexualities
Vanessa Gomes

"Who is the man in the relationship?" "Who tops or bottoms?" These questions have become a
fundamental part in queer people's lives. Why do non queer people need for queer people and their
relationships to imitate heternormative heterosexual ones to understand them? Why are all lesbian
women portrayed as butch, and all gay men as flamboyant? Do these ideas being reinforced over

In media, queer men and women are almost always portrayed in stereotypical roles, and bisexuality
is almost always expressed as a phase or not real. These ideas affect how others view queer
identities and how queer people view their own identity, and the social norms around them. Men are
commonly described as "feminine" whilst women are portrayed as "masculine" (Tara Sarper, 2013).
How did these widespread ideas come to exist and how do they continue to affect members of the
community? These stereotypes can be harmful as they build a picture of what it means to be a
certain sexuality, as well as the heteronormativity behind the stereotype. We often see queer people
in relationships being asked who's the dominant one, the man in the relationship, the top, etc. These
ideas come from a heteronormative society that puts harmful misogynistic norms even in
relationships where women might not be present. Where does the overwhelming pressure for there
to be a "man" or "top" in the relationship come from, and why are those two associated with each
other? Since same sex relationships go against the norm in society, society still puts pressure on
heternormative ideas to be present in them. If two men decide they want to be exclusively a bottom
or top, dominant or submissive, in either their sexual relationship or in their general dynamic, that is
their choice and right to do so. However, a social constructionist would say

Lesbian Gay, Transgender, And Queer Community
People who are a part of the Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, and Queer community (LBGTQ+) have
constantly faced discrimination, especially in the United States. As our world moves towards
becoming more open and accepting towards these groups the lives of these individuals has become
an easier with each step. Unfortunately, while the people of our country have made huge steps
towards equality, such as legalizing gay marriage, there is still a long road ahead of this group as a
whole. One group inside this cluster that I personally think take the most negative interactions from
society is the transgender population.
A person who is transgender is someone who does not identify with their birth sex and rather
identifies with the opposite gender. Roughly there are 1.4 million people in the United States alone
that identify as transgender and 16% of Americans say that they personally know someone who is
transgender (The 2016 Election: Know the facts about transgender people). With those number
amounts consistently rising this is a group of people that should be included as equals no matter how
they identify. Sadly, this is not the world we live in currently
In a study done by The National Center for Transgender Equality and the National LGBTQ
organization did an experimental study to see just how large the issue was with transgender
individuals being discriminated against. According to their results of the transgender individuals
who were questioned 63% said they had been

forced exile and multiple fatwas calling for her death. In India, Bangladesh and abroad, Nasrin's

Bangladesh. She started writing when she was 13. Her writings won the hearts of people across the

Brought up in an atmosphere of culturally imposed restraints, where open discussions on
homosexuality are strongly inhibited, she seems to be a naive in the world of people with different
sexual and emotional needs. At the same time, she ushers in the theme as if only to shock and shake
the orthodox reader off his tabooed and limited perception of sexuality. Hence, Nila, though aroused
by Danielle's advances, seems to be uncertain about her physical desires and bodily demands. We
can also infer that Nila's decision to leave Kishanlal is faced with an immediate sense of uncertainty
and insecurity. Her prime objective to survive in a foreign land and her need of an immediate shelter

The Pros And Cons Of Lesbianism In Audre Lorde
Lesbian, a term originating in the late 19th century, that describes homosexual women. In simpler
words, a lesbian is a woman identified woman who is either sexually, or emotionally attracted to
other woman identified women. Identifying as a lesbian means preparing yourself to be accepted by
some of society, while looked down upon and ridiculed by others, it can mean different things for
different individuals, but one thing remains the same, being lesbian comes with certain experiences,
both good and bad that you otherwise would not experience. The whole lesbian discussion becomes
more complex as we add in different intersections ranging from class, social status, to race. This
brings up the whole concept of intersectionality which describes multiple layers of oppression that
exposes individuals to systems of discrimination and leaves them at a disadvantage. However,
intersectionality is a conversation that could continue on for eternity probably introducing more
interdependent systems than the ones I mentioned. Due to the complexity of the matter, I would like
to focus on and explore just one of the intersections of lesbians that I find most intriguing: lesbians
in relation to race. Being a Black lesbian helps shape many individuals into who they are. The black
lesbian experience most certainty helped shape Audre Lorde, and developed her into the women that
she came to be.
In order to clearly analyze how the black lesbian experience shaped Lorde, I am going to be

Gay Marriage And Same-Sex Marriage
To begin with, not until May 18, 1970 was the gay community involved within the legal system; on
May 18, 1970, they were two students from the University of Minnesota their names were Richard
Baker and Michael McConnell ("Bahn's, Angela J. and Nyla R. Branscomb"). They were the first
gay couple to ask for a Same–Sex Marriage license. They were denied, accepted of the marriage
license base of their sexual orientation. Baker and McConnell sued the state for discrimination; they
went to the State Supreme Court and they lost (Bahn's, Angela J. and Nyla R. Branscomb "). Their
case is considered the Baker vs. Nelson case and it's been used in multiple states as a way to block
marriage equality ("Bahn's, Angela J. and Nyla R. Branscomb). To continue, in 1983 the subject for
equality first began with two gay couple who were seeking equality within Same–Sex Marriage
became a more intense subject ("Craig, Maureen A. and Jennifer A. Richeson"). Karan Thompson
and her lover Sharon were involved in a drunk driving accident and Sharon suffered severe brain
damage ("Craig, Maureen A. and Jennifer A. Richeson"). Karen Thompson wanted to be involved
within her recovery; but Sharon parents denied her access to her within the hospital and didn't allow
her to have any input during her care. Karen Thompson sued Sharon parents and won her case in

Argumentative Essay On Same Sex Violence
According to news.northwestern.edu, domestic violence occurs at least as frequently, and likely
even more so, between same–sex couples compared to opposite–sex couples. However, why is this
issue understudy? Why is the print media or digital media not showing or focusing on this issue as
much as hetersexual couples? As a country we have come a long way, since Obama have passed the
same sex marriage law, the LGBTQ commmunity has gone upwards as an American citizens. On the
other hand, the criminal justice system seems put the LGBTQ community backwards instead of
forward. There is huge amount of same sex violence in between intimate partner. Some are
underreported by the police department, and some same sex couples do not report the abuse at all. It
sad to see this discrimination and the lack of importance in these issue played out in America.
Unfortunately, if this issue continues in a cycle, it may results in heinous crimes that we may or may
not see in the news, It will just be another statistics in America eyes. There are different issues and
circumstances when it becomes to intimate partner violence in same sex couple that explained why
they are excluded. For, one it is gendered roles, Gendered roles has played a huge part in same sex
violence. The different circumstances and labels between lesbian and gay couple are astoundingly. It
helps to look at the real issue from both perspectives instead of putting them together as one.

Utilitarianism And The Dehumanization Of The LGBT Community
Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that states that the best moral action is the one that produces the
greater amount of utility, or the most positivity. Utilitarianists recognize that the acceptance of
homosexual, bisexual, and trangendered individuals would result in an abundance of positive
outcomes such as: the acceptance of individuals, nondiscriminatory laws, desexualization of same–
sex couples, reduced hate crimes, and the humanization of individuals who are humans. Individuals

A Research Study On Adolescent Suicide Essay
Facilitating Connection and Saving Lives
The purpose of this paper is to detail a group aimed to provide support for lesbian, gay, and bisexual
(LGB) adolescents. The paper begins by examining literature related to adolescent suicide rates, the
lack of personal and community resources for teenagers, and adolescent development and mental
health. The paper will then address the methodology, purpose, and goals of the group. The paper will
address the role of the leader. He/she will utilize an Adlerian theoretical orientation and will be
involved, directive, and authentic. The leader will attempt to facilitate social relatedness and
corrective emotional experiences for group members. The paper will briefly review group
evaluation, and it will examine potential ethical/multicultural issues that this leader and group may
encounter. The paper will conclude by detailing activities that will be utilized throughout the six
weeks of the group experience.

Adolescent Suicide and Distress
One young person–age ten to 19–takes his/her own life every 90 minutes (Gould et al. as cited in
Kitts, 2005, p. 622). Russell and Joyner revealed that adolescents who identify as gay or lesbian are
two times more likely to attempt suicide than straight adolescents (as cited in Kitts, 2005, p. 624).
The risk factor for suicide for gay and lesbian adolescents is not their sexuality, but psychosocial
distress they experience due to their sexuality (Kitts, 2005). Adolescents

Homosexual Mothers: The Demonization Of Lesbian Parenting
Harnessing the momentum from the civil rights movement, activism for lesbian parents ignited in
the 1970s. Many hard fought custody and legal battles mark this period. During this time, the
primary aim of the research was to augment legal arguments in establishing their suitability to parent
by likening them with nuclear, heterosexual families (Patterson 2005). Most of the current literature
on lesbian parenting continues to fall under this category. Focusing on psychological outcomes, this
research examines children born within a previous heterosexual relationship (see, for example,
Victor and Fish 1995; Parks 1998). In Canada, courts discerned a 'good' and 'bad' lesbian mother; a

Family building and conception became greatly medicalized and premised on market culture
(Epstein 2012). In part, this constructs an entry point for gays and lesbians to enter the "voting bloc
and market niche," by erasing their differences to blend into the mainstream (Gross 2011, xvi).
Determined by power, social systems are a mechanism through which politics and economy disperse
power, to the dominant groups (Foucault 2001). In this case, the dominant group is acceptance of the
power is the heterosexual nuclear family. In this way, medical models of conception and family
building promote the dominance of heterosexual nuclear family discourses and what is a valid
'family' in society (Brown 2003; Newnham 2010). Compulsory heterosexuality assumes a
naturalness to heterosexuality, an ideology presented and critiqued by Adrienne Rich in her essay
"Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence" (1980). Unable to exist under the imperative
of heterosexuality, Butler (1996) found that gendered sexuality is a performative construction of the
self. Adding to this notion, further feminist interpretations argue that lesbian identities subvert
dominant gender norms (see, for example, Case 1989; de Lauretis 1994; DeLombard 1995; Lamos

Femmephobia In Lesbian, Gay, And Gay Community
Femmephobia is fear and hatred of anything which is related to femininity in both Lesbian, Gay, and
straight community. People in our community are trying to promote feminism and wants our
younger generation to be more accepting towards gender with different sexualities. The term
feminism is defined as equality of both sexes. When people call themselves a feminist, they are
telling people that they believe that both sexes should have equal right regardless of their gender.
For girls and women, being a feminist is to be proud of who they are and approach to equal
opportunities. For boys and men, being a feminist is that they believe in equal opportunities to both
sexes. Femmephobia comes into play where it teaches that being feminine is not beautiful or
valuable. Femmephobia affects not only homosexual community, it also hurts heterosexual
community too.
Femmephobia is when men do not like for men or women to be too feminine. It is very common in
the homosexual community that a lot of gay men do not like to date feminine guys. A lot of straight
men and women do not like when other women or men are too feminine. It teaches both homosexual
and straight community individuals, that being feminine is that you are not valuable, strong, and
beautiful. The idea is to let the new generation know that being a feminist does not make you any
less of a human. Also, being a male feminist does not mean that you are feminine, and you are any
less of a man. Instead, being a male feminist means that you believe in equality for both sexes and
being a female feminist means that you appreciate and are comfortable with being a female and
appreciate your femininity.

Analysis Of The Movie Orange Is The New Black
The Netflix original series, Orange Is the New Black takes a "consumerist approach to sexuality," by
repetitively featuring sexual relations among inmates as a way to attract viewers. (Schwan) Orange
Is the New Black neglects to explore emotional attachment beyond a need to fulfill sexual needs and
minimize loneliness while in prison. Bisexual female characters, if given the opportunity, often
leave their female partner for a relationship with a male, downgrading the realism of an actual
bisexual lifestyle. Although lesbian activity is presented throughout, only women with this body
type are presented in a highly sexualized male gaze viewpoint. (TrierBieniek) The sexual relations
presented display an "objectifying, exploitative portrayal of lesbian sexuality." (Schwan) Although,
Orange Is the New Black's cast is exceptionally diverse, the show only films sex scenes between
slender inmates. Ultimately, the show presents LGBTQ characters in a non–threatening light, but
features bisexuality as a temporary sexual encounter of convenience.
Orange Is the New Black's prison setting follows a fictional trend of connecting "female same–sex
desire and mental and criminal pathology." (Filippo) The show's oversexed storyline "reinforces
society's stereotypes and female prisoners: that they are violent, worthless, sex–crazed monsters."
(Cecil) Also, illustrating "bisexuality and other forms of "deviant" female sexuality are likened more
to mental and criminal deviance." (Filippo) The

Analysis Of ' Pariah, Directed And Written By Dee Rees Essay
LGBT is an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay, bi–sexual, and transgender. It is intended to
highlight a diversity of sexuality and gender identity–based cultures. Historically, LGBT people
have had to deal with being brutalised and misunderstood because of the misconception that being
gay is different and deserves different treatment. However, there are efforts being made daily by the
community in order to educate people and ease their fears. The purpose of the following analysis is
to deconstruct how people who fought back while growing up realizing they are apart of community
help shaped and/or will shape them to become strong roles for LGBT people around the world.
In this paper, I will examine how women of color who deal with the lack of acceptance growing up
because of their lesbianism help shape and/or will shape them to be future role models for LGBT
people around the world. I will be using the coming of age drama, Pariah, directed and written by
Dee Rees, as a primary source in order to argue how the cinematography in this film portrays Alike

of oppression, having to fight its way into the light and having it be pushed aside multiple times. In

I developed knowledge on the first real LGBT+ rights movements in the 1920's, previous to this I
had known nothing other than the recent marriage right movements. The readings helped me to learn
not only about recent events but also about an incredible amount of historical events, organizations,
and fights that made the LGBT+ community what it is today. I also learned that different types of
sources are utilized to gather information, in the ChYOR projects we used many sources such as;
books, oral histories, videos/movies, scholarly articles, and websites. I learned while writing out my
ChYOR assignments that there are an immense amount of sources and if you use more than one for
a project it can give you not only a broader perspective but it can also give you more knowledge of
the event.
There is a difference in the perspectives of a source can make a huge difference on how the
information is given. If an author is not a part of the LGBT+ community the source is lacking a
primary, and emotional side of the work. Sources from an LGBT+ person perspective have an
emotional connection to the LGBT+ community as well sort of insider perspective since a source
outside the LGBT+ community would have information more formally with much less emotion
attached. In order to fully understand something that happened you

`` Rapunzel `` : The Feminist Revitalization Of Fairy Tales
Like all fairytales, Rapunzel has a history that extends far earlier than the 1800s when it first
transcribed by brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. However, Rapunzel is a tale that continues to be
re–written and re–interpreted even today. From the 1970s with the feminist revitalization of fairy
tales to the early 2010s with Disney's Tangled (2010), this timeless tale continues to engage its
listeners. In 2015, Katie Kapurch of Texas State University revisited Rapunzel with an eye on its
more recent modernizations. By starting with Anne Sexton's poem "Rapunzel" from her 1971
collection Transformations, Kapurch analyzed the lesbian elements of the tale in order to examine
the 21st century Tumblr culture that "ships" Tangled's Rapunzel with Brave's (2012) Merida.
Sexton's Rapunzel Anne Sexton wrote her Transformations collection after she noticed her
daughter's fascination with Grimm 's' stories. Sexton asked her daughter to select a few of her
favorites and she rewrote them with "adult" themes, including rape, incest, and fluid sexuality. In her
retelling of Rapunzel, Sexton rewrites Rapunzel as the young and unwilling object of Mother
Goethel's sexual desires. The poem starts with the statement, "a woman who loves a woman is
forever young" (Sexton 1–3). These beginning lines set a common theme of eternal youthfulness
and lesbian desire. In her introduction, Sexton also plays on the imagery of old versus young in her
descriptions of "old breast against young breast"

Compulsory Heterosexuality and
Lesbian Existence
Adrienne Rich
Adrienne Rich 's essay constitutes a powerful challenge to some of our least examined sexual
assumptions. Rich turns all the familiar arguments on their heads: If the first erotic bond is to the
mother, she asks, could not the "natural" sexual orientation of both men and women be toward
women?
Rich 's radical questioning has been a major intellectual force in the general feminist reorientation to
sexual matters in recent years, and her conception of a "lesbian continuum" sparked especially
intense debate. Does lesbianism incorporate all support systems and intense interactions among
women, or is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Stereotypes Of Homosexuality In Film
While many believe that homosexuality has only been seen in mainstream media for only a few
decades, it has actually been with America cinema since the early 1920's. The portrayal of
homosexuality in film and TV has come a very long way since the 1920's. What viewers see on TV
about homosexuality is really just a representation of America's changing public view on the subject.
While we have come to accept the topic of homosexuality in American society more willingly, we
have substituted much of our prejudice about gays with the stereotypes that we see on TV
constantly. Because as a society we are constantly forced to see these stereotypes, we are being
halted in our progression to accept all different kinds of lifestyles. When film was ... Show more

In the early fifties, lesbians were also being attacked by the film industry, portraying them as
bulldykes and troublesome neurotics. While the Hollywood was struggling to make topic of
homosexuality in films more suitable for audiences, the film Victim made its debut in the United
Kingdom. This was the first film to star a homosexual character that stands up to fight against the
oppression of homosexuals. While this was the first time in history that a film portrayed a gay
character in a non–demeaning way, this would lead to the stereotype of sympathetic gay characters
in film. One film that I would like to note that is a great example from the 90's would be the film
Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks as a gay AIDS victim that was fired because of his sexuality and
disease. Hollywood targets Hanks' character and makes him into a tragic figure. His character dies at
the end of the film. In an interview with Jan Oxenberg, she points out that even though Tom Hanks'
film was very effective, it is just "a story about a gay hero who dies, who's a tragic figure" and that it
seems as if Hollywood and the film industry will never have a film in which the gay main character
lives to see another day (Epstein). Another more recent film that demonstrates this sort of
sympathetic gay character would be

Gay Women And The Stereotypes Of Lesbians And Lesbians
Everyone knows a woman that dresses feminine–in long, flowy dresses, bright pink lipstick, and
towering high heels. Personally, my usual attire is composed of a flower headband and a pastel
yellow sundress. People typically expect straight women to uphold a certain feministic standard and
anticipate that lesbian women appear masculine. Lesbians are stereotyped to have short hair, wear
striped flannels and boyfriend jeans, and not wear makeup. Masculine–appearing women are
assumed to be gay; however, there is a group of lesbian women who dress femininely. Lipstick
lesbians, or LLs, are a part of the feminine lesbian community. The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual,
and transgender) community has built up recently and an abundance of stereotypes as well. Contrary
to popular belief, lesbians are not bound to one appearance. We as humans should have the
opportunity to express ourselves in whichever way we desire. Similar to everyone else, lesbians'
appearances do not have to be strictly based off of who they are attracted to. Lipstick lesbians
positively influence lesbian stereotypes because they defy masculine appearance and are unafraid to
express themselves. By recognizing that lesbians who dress femininely are still lesbians, individuals
can avoid awkward and uncomfortable situations by being respectful and acknowledging their
boundaries.
Lipstick lesbians commonly dress in a feminine fashion, are polite and gentle people, and are not
afraid to fight back against rude people. LLs

#LoveWins
With the enhancement in technology, it is now accessible to communicate and connect with people
across the world. It is effortless to share information like pictures, advertisements, videos and text
messages all over the world, to whomever you desire. To many people, it is perceived as a form of
entertainment. However, many people do not realize it can also be used as a form of social activism.
Summer Harlow author of "Social media and social movements: Facebook and an online
Guatemalan justice movement that moved offline" argues that social media is very effective to
create social (online) and physical (offline) activism. While Malcolm Gladwell author of "Small
Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted" identifies that internet activism is an instant
frenzy that creates a brief impact but is not adequate enough to remain on its own. When media is
used as an intellectual resource for activism it can expose people 's conscious about diverse
predicaments or movements occurring around the globe. In today 's contemporary society people
had the power to create a significant change in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT)
community by having same sex marriage legalized in all 50 states. The hashtag #LoveWins became
possible in the United States by social and physical activism which included engagement with social
networks.

The Lesbian Gay Queer Transgender Community
The Lesbian Gay Queer Transgender community, also known as LGBT, has existed since the
beginning of human civilization. Sexuality between homo–sapiens has always been a complex
spectrum between pleasure and reproduction. Many have viewed heterosexuality as natures primary
view of sexuality, but cultures have differed in this view and practice. The Greeks viewed sexuality
as a spectrum free to interpretation, subjective to those perpetuating LGBT identities. Aristocrats,
philosophers, and emperors all partook in homosexuality, transgender cross–dressing, and were not
always hyper masculine but equally queer. Homophobia was a pressured idea in many middle
eastern cultures, as religions observe heterosexuality as true righteousness or holiness.

The Sociological Imagination And Common Sense
The Sociological Imagination was a term that was first coined by sociologist C. Wright Mills. It
could be said that definition of The Sociological Imagination is having the ability to look beyond
personal experience and realise that society is shaped by the cross over between biography and
history. Mills thought that everyone in society had the capability to think sociologically and that this
was essential to gain a deeper understanding of both their society, and their current circumstance.
This approach contradicts a more readily adopted approach by the public that sociologists call "The
common sense approach". The common sense approach is a collection of knowledge that has been
acquired through little scientific merit, such as: personal experience, gossip or anecdotal evidence.
This essay will discuss and explain the difference between the Sociological Imagination and
Common–Sense explanations through the use of examples to explain the topic of sexuality.
Sexuality is an issue that has been widely discussed and has often been misunderstood by society. It
has often been a misconception by members of the heterosexual community that all lesbians want to
be men. Through applying common sense, it can be understood why people may think gay women
want to be men when looking in on the lesbian community, some lesbians prefer to express
themselves and their sexuality through the way they dress and act; their short hair, masculine
clothing, wearing no make–up and their macho

The Loss Of Lesbian Identity
The fear of the disappearance of Lesbian identity is not a new one; Lesbianism has a history of
being ignored. In Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence, author Adrienne Rich
contends that through the lens of Compulsory Heterosexuality, Lesbianism is deemed either
"Abhorrent" or rendered invisible (Rich, 632). While inclusion and cohesion are necessary for
minority groups to gain political clout and recognition, the lack of spaces distinctly for Lesbians has
always been sparse. Grouped in with Gay men, Lesbians lacked a solid political identity without
their male counterparts. "Lesbians have historically been deprived of a political existence through
'inclusion' as female versions of male homosexuality. To equate lesbian existence ... Show more

Lesbians, like Gay men, Bisexuals, and Trans individuals, deserve unique spaces to discuss issues
exclusive to them. The advancement of Queer identity and the preservation of Lesbian identity do
not need to be mutually exclusive. By is establishing more exclusive spaces for some groups, as well
as more spaces open to all LGBTQ participants, both communities can thrive, However, unlike these
groups which have had an increase in established safe spaces, Lesbian spaces are being either
"queered" or shut down. This means Lesbians have no places to call their own, or to strengthen their
identities. "Lesbian" has become a symbol of regressive and exclusionary attitudes; while solidarity
between Lesbians and the Trans community is imperative, Lesbians are entitled to safe spaces and
the autonomy to reject any sexual contact they do not wish to engage in without fear of being
deemed bigoted in response. These conditions, coupled with the negative connotations of
Lesbianism, are not entirely new. Rather, they are the same threats Lesbianism has always
encountered in a different cultural context. These conditions have played a significant role in the
weakening of Lesbian identity. The loss of Lesbian identity and erasure of Lesbian history would be
detrimental to the entire LGBTQ community, as Lesbians have a rich and unique history, as well as
standing in solidarity with other community members. Though it is on the decline, Lesbian identity
will not die until those with exclusive same–sex or same–gender attraction stop finding solace with
the term. As many women continue to identify with lesbianism, these women deserve to be

If someone engaged is such acts, he or she kept the matter to himself or herself, not only because
there were laws against homosexual conduct but also because the community at large disapproved
of it as much as it disapproved of any kind of abnormal sexual behavior. Not only did society at
large disapprove of a homosexual life style, there were laws prohibiting such conduct. Sexual
behavior has always been covered by law, not only in Western society but also in Eastern society.
Laws were put into place to protect the very young, who were believed to be susceptible to
deliberate corruption of innocence. Statutory rape laws were instituted to protect male children
against homosexual conduct, as a hedge against the abuse of youngsters by people of the same sex.
Other laws existed to protect society against public flaunting of immoral conduct. The idea was to
prohibit the conduct by law, and then you won't have to be exposed to it in the public arena. Coming
to the end of the 1960s, gay and lesbian groups were springing up across the United States and
Canada, jumping from fifteen in 1966 to fifty in 1969 (D'Emilio, 1983). They no longer wanted to

The Rights Of Ruth Simpson And Gay Rights
Ruth Simpson (1926 – 2008) Run through plagiarism check Politics isn't just about who gets to
conquer countries, fight wars or make laws in government. It's also about the slow grind and
struggle of those who work behind the scenes to make things happen. Nobody exemplifies this more
than Ruth Simpson, a gay rights activist who toiled for decades to raise awareness of LGBTQ rights
in the US. In 1976, when Ruth wrote her pioneering book on lesbian identity, From the Closet to the
Courts, gay men and women could be fired from their jobs, targeted by police, or harassed on the
street with full impunity. The majority of US states even legally barred gay people from certain jobs,
including those in teaching, policing, law and medicine–even dentistry. If anything is testament to
the work that LGBTQ activists like Ruth have done, it is that such measures seem ludicrous and
unthinkable today. But the world that Ruth operated in was a vastly different one. Born to two
committed socialists deeply involved in the labor movement, Ruth was exposed to activism at an
early age. By the time she was 12, her parents were taking her to picket lines, where she witnessed
her father beaten up by a cop right in front of her. The result, however, was that Ruth disavowed
politics–she had seen the heartbreak and anxiety that her parents' activism had brought about.
Instead, she studied drama and English at university and moved to New York to pursue a brief career
on Broadway. But she found that she

Women During The World War
The 1950s is an era remembered for the Cold War, communism, and June Cleaver. Most historians,
if asked about this period, will mention the 'Red Scare' and the fight to stop the pervasive reach of
communism in post–war America. Most feminists will recall the iconic image of June Cleaver and
the detrimental effect this perfect housewife had on the women's movement after the massive
employment of women during the Second World War. Often forgotten and missing from the pages of
history are the millions of women who were ostracized and subjected to discrimination based upon
their sexuality. These women lost federal jobs, their military careers came to a halt, and, in some
cases, were blacklisted from applying for civilian jobs. Not only were these women forced to
overcome gender inequality in order to support themselves in the workforce, they were also
ostracized by society and endured unending discrimination from the government and police on the
basis of their sexuality. In the face of this tremendous cultural pressure these women carved their
own communities and lives out on the edges of the social order. The pervasive fear of homosexuals
in the 1950s bred an era of anti–gay legislation that greatly contributed to the horrific discrimination
against lesbians and the development of a lesbian subculture. This fear, known as the Lavender
Scare, led to a severe climate of oppression for the emerging lesbian subculture following the
Second World War. As a result of medical

definition considers it to be "any assault, battery, sexual assault, sexual battery, or any criminal

They fought tirelessly and diligently advocating for women of domestic violence who, up until then,
were left with no option but to endure the abuse. It started as a grassroots effort implemented mainly
by feminists who used the defense of patriarchy to further their cause. Today, it has grown to
become an organized and influential group of advocates made up of powerful and dedicated women
who have lobbied and won legislative reforms criminalizing domestic violence. Through their
efforts, mandatory arrest policies and civil protections such as restraining orders have become
commonplace in addressing cases of domestic abuse (Grauwiler & Mills, 2004).
Despite these positive accomplishments, however, their reliance on patriarchy as a defense has led
domestic violence to be viewed as a women's issue when in fact it is not. Domestic violence is a
universal problem. It can happen to anyone. For instance, the occurrence of domestic violence

The Comportance Of Coctive Rape In South Africa
Corrective rape is a common practice in South Africa where heterosexual men force sexual
intercourse on a homosexual female with the supposed intention of convincing her to become
heterosexual. Whilst corrective rape has been reported in countries throughout Asia and Africa over
the decades, its prevalence in South Africa is what led to the coining of the term in the early 2000s,
in the aftermath of the violent deaths of prominent South African lesbians like Eudy Simelane and
Zoliswa Nkonyana. Given the country's liberal constitution and legal framework that explicitly
protects the rights of women and LGBT citizens, the prevalence of corrective rape in South Africa
may seem unusual. However, corrective rape is rooted in deeper institutional issues that encompass
South Africa's courts, sexism, homophobia, and political climate. This paper will explore how the
prevalence of corrective rape in South Africa is rooted in these deeper issues, and why they must be
changed in order to fight the broader issue of corrective rape.
The biggest predictor of violence against women is the prevalence of stereotyped gender roles in a
society. In many cultures, especially in South Africa, men are supposed to be masculine, strong, and
fearless. Women on the other hand are supposed to be feminine, nurturing, and sexual beings to
please men. Deviating from these discourses tests the norm that society creates. The presence of
lesbians often challenges these exact gender expectations, through

The 's Comic Books Have Recently Become A Way Of...
Comic books have recently become a way of representing and expressing ideas on human sexuality.
Politically InQueerect #2 by Dylan Edwards and Liliane and Muesli in Beyond Shades of Queer by
Leanne Franson both tell a story with non–heterosexual characters to portray different views on
sexuality. Franson's comic contains many humorous panels that involve a cat or a dog interacting
with a human being. She is concerned with the categorization of human sexuality based on sexual
behavior and orientation. On the other hand, Edward's comic has different characters that interact in
a friendly and entertaining way. He creates a story to voice his concerns about the political issues
and experiences that homosexuals have. Nevertheless, rather than writing a polemic or an op–ed,
both authors use the comic book medium to convey their opinions about the experiences that the gay
community has and the issues it faces. Representing non–normative sexuality in such a manner
makes it easier for one to examine these issues from a different perspective and to agree with the
beliefs of both authors. Leanne Franson's comic book is about the sexual labels that people use to
identify abnormal sexual behaviors and sexual orientations. Franson takes this idea of labeling
people's sexuality and trivializes it as something that is unnecessary in our society by using dogs as
an example. In doing so, she identifies a parallel between the worlds of human beings and dogs in
her comic book and she

Essay on Gays/Lesbians Normalization in America
Homosexuality is an intensely debated issue in the United States, but there are trends indicating an
increased normalization of the gay/lesbian lifestyle. According to Lee Condon (2001), the Census
2000 should be remembered as the first gay and lesbian census. During this census, the federal
head–counters made an attempt to count gay and lesbian households for the first time. When the
data was released, it showed that 1.2 million same–sex, unmarried partners had been identified.
Single gays and lesbians were left out of this part of the census count, but a study commissioned by
the national gay lobby, Human Rights Campaign, estimated that Census 2000 undercounted gay and
lesbian couples by a factor of 62 percent (Condon, 2001). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In 2000, this policy had an approval of 39 percent. In 2010 gay marriage has increased in popularity
in all fifty states. The popularity of gay marriage has increased most rapidly in the states where gay
rights were already relatively popular in the 1990s, with numbers over 50 percent. The growing
mood of acceptance is possibly tied to an increase in the percentage of people who claim to know
someone who is gay, lesbian, or bisexual. More than 7 in 10 people, says Wellner (2001), claim they
know someone who is gay or lesbian, up from 55 percent in 1998. Over time, as more Americans
interact professionally and socially with members of the gay and lesbian community, the acceptance
of diverse sexual orientations has begun to increase. Gregory M. Herek (2002) believes that there
are several variables that impact public acceptance of gay and lesbian lifestyles, partnerships, and
family systems. For example, attitudes toward gays and lesbians tend to vary. Many Americans are
far more tolerant or accepting of lesbian partnerships with children than they are of gay partnerships
with children. Socio–economic status, education, and gender also impact the perception and
eventual acceptance of gay and lesbian individuals, partnerships, and family. Heterosexual males,
regardless of education, occupation, or socioeconomic class, are more likely than their female

Social Media's Role in Shaping Lesbian Identity

  • 1. Social Media And Its Effects On The Lesbian Community Heterosexism is where one believes that liking or loving the opposite sex is the "Norm" or being homosexual is not right. Limiting student success can come in multiple forms: heterosexism and homophobia limit student success by promoting social media norms, being discriminatory towards the homosexual community, judging before understanding, and not taking their own path and folding under peer pressure. There is no technical problem with homosexuality except the ones that society creates through social media and the community "norm". A social or community "norm" is hard to change and causes an effect on the homosexual community. Stereotypes and the way homosexual community are portrayed in the media are starting to make what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Society is more focused on not going against the "norm" that people aren't sure if they are for or against something, truth be told their just going against what everyone else says when most of the time celebrities do it for publicity or attention. Furthermore, Discrimination has been around for years taking people through hardships especially the homosexual community. "Heterosexism is defined as a setting– level process that systematically privileges heterosexuality relative to homosexuality, based on the assumption that heterosexuality, as well as heterosexual power and privilege are the norm and the ideal"(Chesir–Teran 267). Homosexuals experience discrimination through schools, jobs, stores and in public places. Schools are one of the most easily spotted discrimination areas for

According to recent gay bullying statistics, gay and lesbian teens are two to three times as more likely to commit teen suicide than other youths. About 30 percent of all completed suicides are due to sexual identity crisis. • 6. Sexual Identity And Sexuality Sexual Identity is what a person is attracted to sexually and emotionally. People tend to categorize others depending on their choice of sex. A recent study on the article, "Lesbian Identity Performances in the Workplace, Social Class, and Psychological Health" by Elizabeth McDermott (2006), has shown that people rather not identify their sexual identity so they can be welcomed into their workplace. But, it should not matter about a person's sexuality because it would not make them less of a man or woman to perform their job. Elizabeth McDermott is a Senior Lecturer at Lancaster University; whose research is categorized with mental health inequality in relations to age, sexuality, gender, and social class. Another study was conducted on an article with teenagers; ".... It's a big deal stresses and strains of managing sexual identity(s) on Facebook" by Rubin and McClelland (2015); some feel as if their family and friends would not accept them if they mentioned their sexuality on social media or announce it to anyone. Jennifer Rubin work at the University of Michigan Women's Studies and her research explore how social class shape people's sexuality and gender. While, Sara McClelland works at the University of Michigan Psychology and her research focus on adolescent sexual development and sexual health. Both articles describe the slander that the LGBTQ community deals with when revealing themselves. McDermott (2006) did a study about Lesbian women identity performances in the ... • 10. Pros And Cons Of Same Sex Marriage In Australia There are many articles written about the debate of same–sex marriage with many varying opinions on whether it is a good thing or a bad thing. Everyone has their own opinion about same–sex marriage. But they don't seem to understand how many people it will effect in Australia if it's a majority "No" vote. An article called 'Census: Same–Sex Couples Still A Statistically Small Percent Of Australians'. The article states that 40%–50% of the population is gay. Which means of a population of nearly 24.5 million people roughly half is gay. So why not allow gay marriage to happen here in Australia? There is already so many countries that have already allowed it to happen in their country in the last 20 years. There are many examples of LGBTIQ in books, movies, TV shows and with Celebrities. But guess what they are accepted by their fans, and their peers without a second thought. Some examples are; in 'The mortal Instruments series' by Cassandra Clare she wrote not one but two characters who are apart of the LGBTIQ community and both characters aren't in the background but are two of the many main characters in the series. These characters are Magnus Bane who holds a very important position through the series being the high warlock of Brooklyn and all, and Alec Lightwood, who is very important to the series being amazing with a bow and arrow and being a Shadowhunter. All of the fans of the series have a favourite couple in the series and for this one it just so happens to be the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. How Heteronormativity And Media Stereotypes On Queer... Running head: HOW HETERONORMATIVITY AND MEDIA STEREOTYPES IN SOCIETY INFLUENCES HOW QUEER PEOPLE EXPRESS THEIR SEXUALITIES How heteronormativity and media stereotypes influences how queer people express their sexualities Vanessa Gomes Ryerson University "Who is the man in the relationship?" "Who tops or bottoms?" These questions have become a fundamental part in queer people's lives. Why do non queer people need for queer people and their relationships to imitate heternormative heterosexual ones to understand them? Why are all lesbian women portrayed as butch, and all gay men as flamboyant? Do these ideas being reinforced over and over affect how queer people view their own sexuality? When our society is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In media, queer men and women are almost always portrayed in stereotypical roles, and bisexuality is almost always expressed as a phase or not real. These ideas affect how others view queer identities and how queer people view their own identity, and the social norms around them. Men are commonly described as "feminine" whilst women are portrayed as "masculine" (Tara Sarper, 2013). How did these widespread ideas come to exist and how do they continue to affect members of the community? These stereotypes can be harmful as they build a picture of what it means to be a certain sexuality, as well as the heteronormativity behind the stereotype. We often see queer people in relationships being asked who's the dominant one, the man in the relationship, the top, etc. These ideas come from a heteronormative society that puts harmful misogynistic norms even in relationships where women might not be present. Where does the overwhelming pressure for there to be a "man" or "top" in the relationship come from, and why are those two associated with each other? Since same sex relationships go against the norm in society, society still puts pressure on heternormative ideas to be present in them. If two men decide they want to be exclusively a bottom or top, dominant or submissive, in either their sexual relationship or in their general dynamic, that is their choice and right to do so. • 26. Lesbian Gay, Transgender, And Queer Community People who are a part of the Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, and Queer community (LBGTQ+) have constantly faced discrimination, especially in the United States. As our world moves towards becoming more open and accepting towards these groups the lives of these individuals has become an easier with each step. Unfortunately, while the people of our country have made huge steps towards equality, such as legalizing gay marriage, there is still a long road ahead of this group as a whole. One group inside this cluster that I personally think take the most negative interactions from society is the transgender population. A person who is transgender is someone who does not identify with their birth sex and rather identifies with the opposite gender. Roughly there are 1.4 million people in the United States alone that identify as transgender and 16% of Americans say that they personally know someone who is transgender (The 2016 Election: Know the facts about transgender people). With those number amounts consistently rising this is a group of people that should be included as equals no matter how they identify. Sadly, this is not the world we live in currently In a study done by The National Center for Transgender Equality and the National LGBTQ organization did an experimental study to see just how large the issue was with transgender individuals being discriminated against. According to their results of the transgender individuals who were questioned 63% said they had been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In India, Bangladesh and abroad, Nasrin's fiction, nonfiction, poetry and memoir have topped the best–sellers list. Taslima Nasrin was born in Bangladesh. She started writing when she was 13. With Danielle in the bed, Nila is just a passive partner. Here Nila's attitude towards this complex human behaviour seems to reflect Taslima Nasrin's own lukewarm attitude towards the relationship. Brought up in an atmosphere of culturally imposed restraints, where open discussions on homosexuality are strongly inhibited, she seems to be a naive in the world of people with different sexual and emotional needs. At the same time, she ushers in the theme as if only to shock and shake the orthodox reader off his tabooed and limited perception of sexuality. Hence, Nila, though aroused by Danielle's advances, seems to be uncertain about her physical desires and bodily demands. We can also infer that Nila's decision to leave Kishanlal is faced with an immediate sense of uncertainty and insecurity. Her prime objective to survive in a foreign land and her need of an immediate shelter make her an object of sexual pleasure for Danielle, a homosexual: "Nila was still confused, when she came back to it, Danielle's rapacious tongue licked her for the rest of the night. • 34. The Pros And Cons Of Lesbianism In Audre Lorde Lesbian, a term originating in the late 19th century, that describes homosexual women. In simpler words, a lesbian is a woman identified woman who is either sexually, or emotionally attracted to other woman identified women. Identifying as a lesbian means preparing yourself to be accepted by some of society, while looked down upon and ridiculed by others, it can mean different things for different individuals, but one thing remains the same, being lesbian comes with certain experiences, both good and bad that you otherwise would not experience. The whole lesbian discussion becomes more complex as we add in different intersections ranging from class, social status, to race. This brings up the whole concept of intersectionality which describes multiple layers of oppression that exposes individuals to systems of discrimination and leaves them at a disadvantage. However, intersectionality is a conversation that could continue on for eternity probably introducing more interdependent systems than the ones I mentioned. Due to the complexity of the matter, I would like to focus on and explore just one of the intersections of lesbians that I find most intriguing: lesbians in relation to race. Being a Black lesbian helps shape many individuals into who they are. The black lesbian experience most certainty helped shape Audre Lorde, and developed her into the women that she came to be. In order to clearly analyze how the black lesbian experience shaped Lorde, I am going to be focusing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gay Marriage And Same-Sex Marriage To begin with, not until May 18, 1970 was the gay community involved within the legal system; on May 18, 1970, they were two students from the University of Minnesota their names were Richard Baker and Michael McConnell ("Bahn's, Angela J. and Nyla R. Branscomb"). They were the first gay couple to ask for a Same–Sex Marriage license. They were denied, accepted of the marriage license base of their sexual orientation. Baker and McConnell sued the state for discrimination; they went to the State Supreme Court and they lost (Bahn's, Angela J. and Nyla R. Branscomb "). Their case is considered the Baker vs. Nelson case and it's been used in multiple states as a way to block marriage equality ("Bahn's, Angela J. and Nyla R. Branscomb). To continue, in 1983 the subject for equality first began with two gay couple who were seeking equality within Same–Sex Marriage became a more intense subject ("Craig, Maureen A. and Jennifer A. Richeson"). Karan Thompson and her lover Sharon were involved in a drunk driving accident and Sharon suffered severe brain damage ("Craig, Maureen A. and Jennifer A. Richeson"). Karen Thompson wanted to be involved within her recovery; but Sharon parents denied her access to her within the hospital and didn't allow her to have any input during her care. Karen Thompson sued Sharon parents and won her case in 1991 ("Craig, Maureen A. and Jennifer A. Richeson"). • 42. Argumentative Essay On Same Sex Violence According to news.northwestern.edu, domestic violence occurs at least as frequently, and likely even more so, between same–sex couples compared to opposite–sex couples. However, why is this issue understudy? Why is the print media or digital media not showing or focusing on this issue as much as hetersexual couples? As a country we have come a long way, since Obama have passed the same sex marriage law, the LGBTQ commmunity has gone upwards as an American citizens. On the other hand, the criminal justice system seems put the LGBTQ community backwards instead of forward. There is huge amount of same sex violence in between intimate partner. Some are underreported by the police department, and some same sex couples do not report the abuse at all. It sad to see this discrimination and the lack of importance in these issue played out in America. Unfortunately, if this issue continues in a cycle, it may results in heinous crimes that we may or may not see in the news, It will just be another statistics in America eyes. There are different issues and circumstances when it becomes to intimate partner violence in same sex couple that explained why they are excluded. For, one it is gendered roles, Gendered roles has played a huge part in same sex violence. The different circumstances and labels between lesbian and gay couple are astoundingly. • 50. A Research Study On Adolescent Suicide Essay Facilitating Connection and Saving Lives The purpose of this paper is to detail a group aimed to provide support for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adolescents. The paper begins by examining literature related to adolescent suicide rates, the lack of personal and community resources for teenagers, and adolescent development and mental health. The paper will then address the methodology, purpose, and goals of the group. The paper will address the role of the leader. He/she will utilize an Adlerian theoretical orientation and will be involved, directive, and authentic. The leader will attempt to facilitate social relatedness and corrective emotional experiences for group members. The paper will briefly review group evaluation, and it will examine potential ethical/multicultural issues that this leader and group may encounter. The paper will conclude by detailing activities that will be utilized throughout the six weeks of the group experience. Literature Review Adolescent Suicide and Distress One young person–age ten to 19–takes his/her own life every 90 minutes (Gould et al. as cited in Kitts, 2005, p. 622). Russell and Joyner revealed that adolescents who identify as gay or lesbian are two times more likely to attempt suicide than straight adolescents (as cited in Kitts, 2005, p. 624). The risk factor for suicide for gay and lesbian adolescents is not their sexuality, but psychosocial distress they experience due to their sexuality (Kitts, 2005). Adolescents ... • 54. Homosexual Mothers: The Demonization Of Lesbian Parenting Harnessing the momentum from the civil rights movement, activism for lesbian parents ignited in the 1970s. Many hard fought custody and legal battles mark this period. During this time, the primary aim of the research was to augment legal arguments in establishing their suitability to parent by likening them with nuclear, heterosexual families (Patterson 2005). Most of the current literature on lesbian parenting continues to fall under this category. Focusing on psychological outcomes, this research examines children born within a previous heterosexual relationship (see, for example, Victor and Fish 1995; Parks 1998). In Canada, courts discerned a 'good' and 'bad' lesbian mother; a 'good' lesbian mother was markedly invisible, unpolitical, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Family building and conception became greatly medicalized and premised on market culture (Epstein 2012). In part, this constructs an entry point for gays and lesbians to enter the "voting bloc and market niche," by erasing their differences to blend into the mainstream (Gross 2011, xvi). Determined by power, social systems are a mechanism through which politics and economy disperse power, to the dominant groups (Foucault 2001). In this case, the dominant group is acceptance of the power is the heterosexual nuclear family. In this way, medical models of conception and family building promote the dominance of heterosexual nuclear family discourses and what is a valid 'family' in society (Brown 2003; Newnham 2010). Compulsory heterosexuality assumes a naturalness to heterosexuality, an ideology presented and critiqued by Adrienne Rich in her essay "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence" (1980). Unable to exist under the imperative of heterosexuality, Butler (1996) found that gendered sexuality is a performative construction of the self. Adding to this notion, further feminist interpretations argue that lesbian identities subvert dominant gender norms (see, for example, Case 1989; de Lauretis 1994; DeLombard 1995; Lamos 1994; Morgan ... • 62. Femmephobia In Lesbian, Gay, And Gay Community Femmephobia is fear and hatred of anything which is related to femininity in both Lesbian, Gay, and straight community. People in our community are trying to promote feminism and wants our younger generation to be more accepting towards gender with different sexualities. The term feminism is defined as equality of both sexes. When people call themselves a feminist, they are telling people that they believe that both sexes should have equal right regardless of their gender. For girls and women, being a feminist is to be proud of who they are and approach to equal opportunities. For boys and men, being a feminist is that they believe in equal opportunities to both sexes. Femmephobia comes into play where it teaches that being feminine is not beautiful or valuable. Femmephobia affects not only homosexual community, it also hurts heterosexual community too. Femmephobia is when men do not like for men or women to be too feminine. It is very common in the homosexual community that a lot of gay men do not like to date feminine guys. A lot of straight men and women do not like when other women or men are too feminine. It teaches both homosexual and straight community individuals, that being feminine is that you are not valuable, strong, and beautiful. The idea is to let the new generation know that being a feminist does not make you any less of a human. Also, being a male feminist does not mean that you are feminine, and you are any less of a man. Instead, being a male feminist means that you believe in equality for both sexes and being a female feminist means that you appreciate and are comfortable with being a female and appreciate your femininity. In "Masculine Guys Only": The effects of femmephobic mobile dating application profiles on partner selection for men who have sex with men" study, Behm–Morawitz and Miller (2016), had 144 homosexual participants who participated on a voluntary and anonymous basis. Analysis Of The Movie Orange Is The New Black The Netflix original series, Orange Is the New Black takes a "consumerist approach to sexuality," by repetitively featuring sexual relations among inmates as a way to attract viewers. (Schwan) Orange Is the New Black neglects to explore emotional attachment beyond a need to fulfill sexual needs and minimize loneliness while in prison. Bisexual female characters, if given the opportunity, often leave their female partner for a relationship with a male, downgrading the realism of an actual bisexual lifestyle. Although lesbian activity is presented throughout, only women with this body type are presented in a highly sexualized male gaze viewpoint. (TrierBieniek) The sexual relations presented display an "objectifying, exploitative portrayal of lesbian sexuality." (Schwan) Although, Orange Is the New Black's cast is exceptionally diverse, the show only films sex scenes between slender inmates. Ultimately, the show presents LGBTQ characters in a non–threatening light, but features bisexuality as a temporary sexual encounter of convenience. Orange Is the New Black's prison setting follows a fictional trend of connecting "female same–sex desire and mental and criminal pathology." (Filippo) The show's oversexed storyline "reinforces society's stereotypes and female prisoners: that they are violent, worthless, sex–crazed monsters." (Cecil) Also, illustrating "bisexuality and other forms of "deviant" female sexuality are likened more to mental and criminal deviance." (Filippo) The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is intended to highlight a diversity of sexuality and gender identity–based cultures. Historically, LGBT people have had to deal with being brutalised and misunderstood because of the misconception that being gay is different and deserves different treatment. However, there are efforts being made daily by the community in order to educate people and ease their fears. The purpose of the following analysis is to deconstruct how people who fought back while growing up realizing they are apart of community help shaped and/or will shape them to become strong roles for LGBT people around the world. In this paper, I will examine how women of color who deal with the lack of acceptance growing up because of their lesbianism help shape and/or will shape them to be future role models for LGBT people around the world. I will be using the coming of age drama, Pariah, directed and written by Dee Rees, as a primary source in order to argue how the cinematography in this film portrays Alike being the epitome of embracing one 's sexuality. I chose this film because it reminded me of a similar story that touched me in the form of a book written by Audre Lorde called Zami: A New Spelling of My Name. Ellen DeGeneres is a humorous and influential individual who wants to be known for her friendly personality and her brutally honest mindset to her adoring fans. However, Rapunzel is a tale that continues to be re–written and re–interpreted even today. From the 1970s with the feminist revitalization of fairy tales to the early 2010s with Disney's Tangled (2010), this timeless tale continues to engage its listeners. In 2015, Katie Kapurch of Texas State University revisited Rapunzel with an eye on its more recent modernizations. By starting with Anne Sexton's poem "Rapunzel" from her 1971 collection Transformations, Kapurch analyzed the lesbian elements of the tale in order to examine the 21st century Tumblr culture that "ships" Tangled's Rapunzel with Brave's (2012) Merida. Sexton's Rapunzel Anne Sexton wrote her Transformations collection after she noticed her daughter's fascination with Grimm 's' stories. Sexton asked her daughter to select a few of her favorites and she rewrote them with "adult" themes, including rape, incest, and fluid sexuality. In her retelling of Rapunzel, Sexton rewrites Rapunzel as the young and unwilling object of Mother Goethel's sexual desires. The poem starts with the statement, "a woman who loves a woman is forever young" (Sexton 1–3). These beginning lines set a common theme of eternal youthfulness and lesbian desire. The portrayal of homosexuality in film and TV has come a very long way since the 1920's. What viewers see on TV about homosexuality is really just a representation of America's changing public view on the subject. While we have come to accept the topic of homosexuality in American society more willingly, we have substituted much of our prejudice about gays with the stereotypes that we see on TV constantly. While this was the first time in history that a film portrayed a gay character in a non–demeaning way, this would lead to the stereotype of sympathetic gay characters in film. Hollywood targets Hanks' character and makes him into a tragic figure. His character dies at the end of the film. Personally, my usual attire is composed of a flower headband and a pastel yellow sundress. People typically expect straight women to uphold a certain feministic standard and anticipate that lesbian women appear masculine. Lesbians are stereotyped to have short hair, wear striped flannels and boyfriend jeans, and not wear makeup. Masculine–appearing women are assumed to be gay; however, there is a group of lesbian women who dress femininely. Lipstick lesbians, or LLs, are a part of the feminine lesbian community. The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community has built up recently and an abundance of stereotypes as well. Contrary to popular belief, lesbians are not bound to one appearance. We as humans should have the opportunity to express ourselves in whichever way we desire. Similar to everyone else, lesbians' appearances do not have to be strictly based off of who they are attracted to. Lipstick lesbians positively influence lesbian stereotypes because they defy masculine appearance and are unafraid to express themselves. By recognizing that lesbians who dress femininely are still lesbians, individuals can avoid awkward and uncomfortable situations by being respectful and acknowledging their boundaries. Lipstick lesbians commonly dress in a feminine fashion, are polite and gentle people, and are not afraid to fight back against rude people. LLs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It could be said that definition of The Sociological Imagination is having the ability to look beyond personal experience and realise that society is shaped by the cross over between biography and history. Mills thought that everyone in society had the capability to think sociologically and that this was essential to gain a deeper understanding of both their society, and their current circumstance. This approach contradicts a more readily adopted approach by the public that sociologists call "The common sense approach". The common sense approach is a collection of knowledge that has been acquired through little scientific merit, such as: personal experience, gossip or anecdotal evidence. This essay will discuss and explain the difference between the Sociological Imagination and Common–Sense explanations through the use of examples to explain the topic of sexuality. Sexuality is an issue that has been widely discussed and has often been misunderstood by society. It has often been a misconception by members of the heterosexual community that all lesbians want to be men. Through applying common sense, it can be understood why people may think gay women want to be men when looking in on the lesbian community, some lesbians prefer to express themselves and their sexuality through the way they dress and act; their short hair, masculine clothing, wearing no make–up and their macho ... This means Lesbians have no places to call their own, or to strengthen their identities. "Lesbian" has become a symbol of regressive and exclusionary attitudes; while solidarity between Lesbians and the Trans community is imperative, Lesbians are entitled to safe spaces and the autonomy to reject any sexual contact they do not wish to engage in without fear of being deemed bigoted in response. These conditions, coupled with the negative connotations of Lesbianism, are not entirely new. Rather, they are the same threats Lesbianism has always encountered in a different cultural context. These conditions have played a significant role in the weakening of Lesbian identity. Sexual behavior has always been covered by law, not only in Western society but also in Eastern society. The Rights Of Ruth Simpson And Gay Rights Ruth Simpson (1926 – 2008) Run through plagiarism check Politics isn't just about who gets to conquer countries, fight wars or make laws in government. It's also about the slow grind and struggle of those who work behind the scenes to make things happen. Nobody exemplifies this more than Ruth Simpson, a gay rights activist who toiled for decades to raise awareness of LGBTQ rights in the US. In 1976, when Ruth wrote her pioneering book on lesbian identity, From the Closet to the Courts, gay men and women could be fired from their jobs, targeted by police, or harassed on the street with full impunity. The majority of US states even legally barred gay people from certain jobs, including those in teaching, policing, law and medicine–even dentistry. If anything is testament to the work that LGBTQ activists like Ruth have done, it is that such measures seem ludicrous and unthinkable today. But the world that Ruth operated in was a vastly different one. Born to two committed socialists deeply involved in the labor movement, Ruth was exposed to activism at an early age. By the time she was 12, her parents were taking her to picket lines, where she witnessed her father beaten up by a cop right in front of her. The result, however, was that Ruth disavowed politics–she had seen the heartbreak and anxiety that her parents' activism had brought about. Instead, she studied drama and English at university and moved to New York to pursue a brief career on Broadway. But she found that she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 130. Women During The World War The 1950s is an era remembered for the Cold War, communism, and June Cleaver. Most historians, if asked about this period, will mention the 'Red Scare' and the fight to stop the pervasive reach of communism in post–war America. Most feminists will recall the iconic image of June Cleaver and the detrimental effect this perfect housewife had on the women's movement after the massive employment of women during the Second World War. Often forgotten and missing from the pages of history are the millions of women who were ostracized and subjected to discrimination based upon their sexuality. These women lost federal jobs, their military careers came to a halt, and, in some cases, were blacklisted from applying for civilian jobs. Not only were these women forced to overcome gender inequality in order to support themselves in the workforce, they were also ostracized by society and endured unending discrimination from the government and police on the basis of their sexuality. In the face of this tremendous cultural pressure these women carved their own communities and lives out on the edges of the social order. The pervasive fear of homosexuals in the 1950s bred an era of anti–gay legislation that greatly contributed to the horrific discrimination against lesbians and the development of a lesbian subculture. This fear, known as the Lavender Scare, led to a severe climate of oppression for the emerging lesbian subculture following the Second World War. As a result of medical ... • 134. A Research Study On The Lesbian Community A countertransference that may arise when doing therapy with the couple is towards Jane hesitance to come out to her family because of their religious believes. This therapist holds prejudice against people who use religion as an excuse to oppress others. This therapist would prefer to push Jane to come out to her family without worrying about her family's opinion because if her family is assumedly close minded, they do not deserve Jane love and care. However, Jane is not in a place to confront her family. Pushing Jane to come out to her family would be harmful to Jane if she is not ready. Thus, this therapist pressuring Jane to be open with her family would be unethical. Also, this therapist would be siding with Charlize. Another countertransference issue that may arise when counseling this couple is that this therapist is inexperienced treating lesbian couples. The Lesbian community is a minority population that this therapist has little knowledge on providing culturally competent services for. This therapist may over–think statements before doing them because of the fear to be culturally inappropriate. A stereotype that this therapist has about sexual minorities is that gender roles are binary, male and female, and even sexual minorities follow that gender binary. Because of that stereotype, this therapist might attempt to categorize the feminine and the masculine partner in the couple. Also, a countertransference issue that might arise is towards Charlize. • 138. Robert Lorway 's Defiant Desire Review of "Defiant Desire in Namibia" Robert Lorway delivers a feminist perspective with his ethnography, "Defiant Desire in Namibia". Lorway examines sexuality as both a social construct and a political one. While this ethnography provides unparalleled information about gender and sexuality in the poorer world, there are a few important flaws, such as the lack of information about radical ideas or behavior, neglect of his own bias, and the length of the ethnography. My ethnography of choice was," Defiant Desire in Namibia: Female sexual–gender transgression and the making of political being." Written by Robert Lorway from the University of Manitoba. These were his metaphorical backstage passes into their secretive culture. In this ethnography, Lorway analyzes female sexual desire and the challenges these women face. He discusses problems with their president, their families, their employment and the aggression against them. Many of these women reported being stabbed multiple times by both women and men. They also claimed that it is not uncommon for women to be raped in Namibia, and being lesbians give them a better sense of security. HIV is extremely prevent in Namibian society, and some of these women even report a fear of sleeping with men for this reason. Lorway arrived in Namibia in 2001, shortly after their president announced that all LGBT peoples would be thrown in prison. One women who was incarcerated was thankful for the consistent food and shelter. During rough times, these lesbians would become prostitutes as well, despite the fact that they were not sexually attracted to men. Overall, these working class lesbians faced numerous hardships, with little support outside of their organizations The Rainbow Project and Sister Namibia. They also preferred in most cases to use the western labels, such as 'lesbian ', despite the government 's attempt to claim that homosexuality in unnatural and a western cultural import. • 142. The Occurrence of Domestic Violence in the Gay and Lesbian... Domestic violence, also referred to as intimate partner violence, intimate partner abuse or domestic abuse, affects over one million people in the United States alone. It can be carried out in any number of ways including physically, emotionally, sexually, psychologically and/or financially. Its legal definition considers it to be "any assault, battery, sexual assault, sexual battery, or any criminal offense resulting in physically injury or death of one family member or household member by another who is residing in the same single dwelling unit" (Brown, 2008). In the United States it is considered a major health problem so much so that it was declared the number one health concern by the U.S. Surgeon General in 1992 (Peterman & Dixon, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They fought tirelessly and diligently advocating for women of domestic violence who, up until then, were left with no option but to endure the abuse. It started as a grassroots effort implemented mainly by feminists who used the defense of patriarchy to further their cause. Today, it has grown to become an organized and influential group of advocates made up of powerful and dedicated women who have lobbied and won legislative reforms criminalizing domestic violence. Through their efforts, mandatory arrest policies and civil protections such as restraining orders have become commonplace in addressing cases of domestic abuse (Grauwiler & Mills, 2004). Despite these positive accomplishments, however, their reliance on patriarchy as a defense has led domestic violence to be viewed as a women's issue when in fact it is not. Domestic violence is a universal problem. It can happen to anyone. For instance, the occurrence of domestic violence within the gay and lesbian population occurs at a rate comparable to that of the heterosexual community. Not only are prevalence rates similar, batterers and victims share the same qualities as well. There is no "typical" batterer. They may come from all walks of life. Abusers may be poor, rich, differ in race and religion; they may have been witnesses to abuse during their childhood or they may have grown up in a non–violent home. They may be gay, straight or bisexual but, regardless of sexual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 146. The Comportance Of Coctive Rape In South Africa Corrective rape is a common practice in South Africa where heterosexual men force sexual intercourse on a homosexual female with the supposed intention of convincing her to become heterosexual. Whilst corrective rape has been reported in countries throughout Asia and Africa over the decades, its prevalence in South Africa is what led to the coining of the term in the early 2000s, in the aftermath of the violent deaths of prominent South African lesbians like Eudy Simelane and Zoliswa Nkonyana. Given the country's liberal constitution and legal framework that explicitly protects the rights of women and LGBT citizens, the prevalence of corrective rape in South Africa may seem unusual. However, corrective rape is rooted in deeper institutional issues that encompass South Africa's courts, sexism, homophobia, and political climate. This paper will explore how the prevalence of corrective rape in South Africa is rooted in these deeper issues, and why they must be changed in order to fight the broader issue of corrective rape. The biggest predictor of violence against women is the prevalence of stereotyped gender roles in a society. In many cultures, especially in South Africa, men are supposed to be masculine, strong, and fearless. Women on the other hand are supposed to be feminine, nurturing, and sexual beings to please men. Deviating from these discourses tests the norm that society creates. The presence of lesbians often challenges these exact gender expectations, through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 150. The 's Comic Books Have Recently Become A Way Of... Comic books have recently become a way of representing and expressing ideas on human sexuality. Politically InQueerect #2 by Dylan Edwards and Liliane and Muesli in Beyond Shades of Queer by Leanne Franson both tell a story with non–heterosexual characters to portray different views on sexuality. Franson's comic contains many humorous panels that involve a cat or a dog interacting with a human being. She is concerned with the categorization of human sexuality based on sexual behavior and orientation. On the other hand, Edward's comic has different characters that interact in a friendly and entertaining way. He creates a story to voice his concerns about the political issues and experiences that homosexuals have. Nevertheless, rather than writing a polemic or an op–ed, both authors use the comic book medium to convey their opinions about the experiences that the gay community has and the issues it faces. Representing non–normative sexuality in such a manner makes it easier for one to examine these issues from a different perspective and to agree with the beliefs of both authors. Leanne Franson's comic book is about the sexual labels that people use to identify abnormal sexual behaviors and sexual orientations. Franson takes this idea of labeling people's sexuality and trivializes it as something that is unnecessary in our society by using dogs as an example. In doing so, she identifies a parallel between the worlds of human beings and dogs in her comic book and she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 154. Essay on Gays/Lesbians Normalization in America Homosexuality is an intensely debated issue in the United States, but there are trends indicating an increased normalization of the gay/lesbian lifestyle. According to Lee Condon (2001), the Census 2000 should be remembered as the first gay and lesbian census. During this census, the federal head–counters made an attempt to count gay and lesbian households for the first time. When the data was released, it showed that 1.2 million same–sex, unmarried partners had been identified. Single gays and lesbians were left out of this part of the census count, but a study commissioned by the national gay lobby, Human Rights Campaign, estimated that Census 2000 undercounted gay and lesbian couples by a factor of 62 percent (Condon, 2001). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 2000, this policy had an approval of 39 percent. In 2010 gay marriage has increased in popularity in all fifty states. The popularity of gay marriage has increased most rapidly in the states where gay rights were already relatively popular in the 1990s, with numbers over 50 percent. The growing mood of acceptance is possibly tied to an increase in the percentage of people who claim to know someone who is gay, lesbian, or bisexual. More than 7 in 10 people, says Wellner (2001), claim they know someone who is gay or lesbian, up from 55 percent in 1998. Over time, as more Americans interact professionally and socially with members of the gay and lesbian community, the acceptance of diverse sexual orientations has begun to increase. Gregory M. Herek (2002) believes that there are several variables that impact public acceptance of gay and lesbian lifestyles, partnerships, and family systems. For example, attitudes toward gays and lesbians tend to vary. Many Americans are far more tolerant or accepting of lesbian partnerships with children than they are of gay partnerships with children. Socio–economic status, education, and gender also impact the perception and eventual acceptance of gay and lesbian individuals, partnerships, and family.
