In 1940, forensic psychology took another big step forward, when the courts deemed an expert
witness should be based on the expert's knowledge versus the type of degree they possessed
("Forensic Psychologist – Psychology Jobs in Forensic Psychology, by AlleyDog.com," n.d.).
Between 1940 and 1960, forensic psychology remained stagnant and did not become completely
recognized for matters concerning mental illness in the courts until Jenkins vs. United States in 1962
(Dye, n.d.). It was not until 1991, that specific guidelines for forensic psychology were developed
and published by the Committee on Special Guidelines for forensic psychology (American
Psychological Association, 2012). In 2001, forensic psychology became and medically accepted as a

A forensic psychologist could work for the courts, police, prosecutors, defendants, prisons, or in

Career Choice For A Career
My career choice is a Forensic Psychologist. Since I first figured what I wanted to be when I grew
up, it either involved science, medicine, and law. I went from Surgeon to Scientist then to Lawyer. It

came to the conclusion that being a Forensic Psychologist was the best route for me to take. In my

When it comes to kids, we tend to baby them. We organize their lives and set limits on everything. If
they want to do something outside those limits we tell them they are not old enough or they have not

Even though she was not the one that killed Elmer Heichel and she was the one to call the police
later, she still got a hefty sentence. If a case like this occurred today and adult was in the same
situation as Pruitt, I highly doubt they would have gotten such a high sentence. The study confirms
this, as juveniles receive longer sentences.
Article 2– Sexual Abuse and Recidivism
In this study, a group of juveniles were evaluated by completing a self– reported assessment, being
interviewed by a psychologist, and having their caretaker/guardian interviewed. The authors took
this information and used demographics, substance abuse, psychiatric diagnosis, interviews,
standardized measures, legal history, and history of childhood sexual abuse to determine recidivism
rates among juveniles. The participants were monitored and after 12 months the authors gathered the
data to determine what factors were key among those who had reoffended compared to those that
did not.
Results
This study revealed that 32% of males and 22% of female juveniles reoffended within 12 months
(Conrad, Tolou–Shams, Rizzo, Placella, & Brown, 2014). Besides rates of recidivism, there were
also factors that separated the sexes. Males tended to have more issues with drugs or alcohol and
prior offenses while females experienced more childhood sexual

Competency And Stand Trial Is Coming Into Question
The competency to stand trial is coming into question in the case against Deasia Watkins. The CBS
news article illustrated a 20–year–old mother who has allegedly decapitated her infant daughter. The
police arrived to find Watkins' 3–month–old child decapitated on the kitchen counter in the home of
the child's aunt that was temporarily caring for the child. Watkins appeared to be suffering from
mental issues when she was found in bed covered in her child's blood. Watkins has to be sent for
treatment and further evaluation at a psychiatric hospital with the intention to restore her
competency so she will be able to stand trial on an aggravated murder charge in the death of her
child. She was already considered a threat to the child and diagnosed with postpartum psychosis
prior to the incident. Social workers found the child a home with her aunt, but were not aware that
Watkins had moved in. Doctors have six months to restore her competency for a hearing in October
to reevaluate her mental stability. Even after that evaluation doubtable question of whether or not
Watkins was competent at the time of the murder of her infant daughter still comes to mind.
In the case of Dusky v. the United States, the court affirmed that a defendant has a right to a
competency evaluation before a trial. The case established that if a defendant is not competent to
