Brainy Quote By F. Scott Fitzgerald
"The wise writer writes for the youth of his own generation, the critics of the next, and the
schoolmasters of ever afterward," (Fitzgerald qtd. In "BrainyQuote"). This quote shows why
Fitzgerald's writings have continued to be present in modern generations. With multiple films out in
recent years many of his writings have become household names. F. Scott Fitzgerald's national fame
is a result of his early life, writing career, and his eventual downfall.
According to Biography editors, Francis Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on
September 24, 1896. His mother was from an Irish–Catholic family that had made a living as
grocers in Minnesota. As he was growing up his father owned an unsuccessful furniture store.
Throughout his childhood he constantly moved between Buffalo and Syracuse several times. He
would eventually return to St. Paul at the age of 12. At the age of 13 he went to school at St. Paul
Academy. While at St. Paul Academy he wrote "a detective story" that was put in their school paper
(F. Scott Fitzgerald Biography). Two years he would go to New Jersey to begin schooling at a
Catholic prep school. Fitzgerald's writing talents were noticed by a priest at this school, and the

did not sell very well. In the next couple years Fitzgerald continued to be depressed while struggling
with alcohol abuse. In 1937 he returned to Hollywood and he began writing scripts. A couple years

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Great Gatsby The Jazz Age was an era where everything and anything seemed possible. It
started with the beginning of a new age with America coming out of World War I as the most
powerful nation in the world (Novel reflections on, 2007). As a result, the nation soon faced a
culture–shock of material prosperity during the 1920's. Also known as the "roaring twenties", it was
a time where life consisted of prodigality and extravagant parties. Writing based on his personal
experiences, author F. Scott Fitzgerald, distinctly conveys through The Great Gatsby the change
within America's society, class differences, and the effect of an absence of religion through the
corruption of the "American Dream" during the Jazz Age. An ocean of immigrants arrived in
America to start a new life searching for any available jobs during the seventeenth century. They
brought upon a new belief of self–innovation through their hard work and a dedication called the
"American Dream." This dream represented the idea that a person wanting to become successful
would put in hard work striving for advancement and that this potential advantage actually exists. F.
Scott Fitzgerald helped seek the undergoing routines among the elite during the Jazz age. It was
primarily through the narrator, Nick Carraway, that the author presents the illusion and aura of a
man named Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is an example of the corruption of the American Dream during
the 1920's. Gatsby, the main character within the novel,

An Interview with F. Scott Fitzgerald
DailyTimes Newspaper
F Scott Fitzgerald has been one of the most recognizable authors out there today. Many people
admire his work, but he's hard to catch and follow due to his busy schedule and personal lifestyle
being an alcoholic. On the 19th of November 1925 I was given a chance to meet up with F. Scott
Fitzgerald, to discuss about the eminent novel written by him "The Great Gatsby" at his house in
Los Angeles. The books about a poor turned wealthy man, Gatsby and his attempt on getting his
past lover back. What you're about to read is one of the first few interviews ever with Mr. Fitzgerald
in person. Below is the transcript of that interview.

I position the characters in the novel to represent these socials trends. Meyer Wolfshiem and
Gatsby's fortune also symbolizes the ascension of organized crime and bootlegging.
Andy Swenson: What are some other key themes found in the novel?
F Scott Fitzgerald: It depends on the readers interpretation but for me personally its Love and Class,
both of theses played a huge role in the book. I view love as a foolish thing and I showed this in the
novel by the use of the main character "Jay Gatsby". He fell in love with Daisy which made him
look like a fool because Daisy is already with Tom. Class brings me back to the American Dream,
which does not exist since we're all who we are when we're born. Changing class can lead to tragedy
which could be pretty grim for people in World War 1.
Andy Swenson: Thank you very much Mr. Fitzgerald it's an honor to finally meet you, have a great

The Genius of Fitzgerald In order to spot a literary genius, it is necessary for one to first define the
word literary genius. What makes a literary genius? Though a broad term that can be applied to
many situations, a literary genius can best be described as an author who has a timeless impact on
literature with themes that resonate with every kind of person. F. Scott Fitzgerald, along with several
others, is the epitome of a literary genius. Fitzgerald's works like This Side of Paradise and Tender is
the Night are both great stories and, in a deeper and more analytical context, works that reflect the
reality of the world. The world isn't in the most ideal state, and Fitzgerald knows that. From
describing the lonesome life of wealth and riches to examining how people feel about romance,
Fitzgerald's works will always be applicable to life.
In This Side of Paradise, the main character, Amory Blaine, is essentially on a quest to find values
that suit him. Throughout every aspect of life, Blaine is found repeatedly trying and failing different
methods of living. Blaine was raised in a very unconventional environment. Due to this, Blaine is
seen trying to counter this upbringing by acting in a conventional manner. This is first observed
when Blaine comes back to Beatrice after a 2 year separation. "No, Beatrice. I enjoyed them. I
adapted myself to the bourgeoisie. I became conventional." (Paradise ?). With that in

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
F. Scott Fitzgerald was the model of the American image in the nineteen twenties. He had wealth,
fame, a beautiful wife, and an adorable daughter; all seemed perfect. Beneath the gilded façade,
however, was an author who struggled with domestic and physical difficulties that plagued his
personal life and career throughout its short span. This author helped to launch the theme that is so
prevalent in his work; the human instinct to yearn for more, into the forefront of American literature,
where it would remain a common topic of writing to this day. Far below the partying and drinking
front of F. Scott Fitzgerald lay a common man who wrote from the heart, and held nothing back. On
September 24, 1896 in a quiet neighborhood of St. Paul Minnesota, Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald
was born to Edward Fitzgerald and his wife, Mollie McQuillan Fitzgerald. Edward was from a
wealthy old family in Maryland with relations to F. Scott's namesake; Francis Scott Key. Mollie was
a wealthy daughter of a native St. Paul family with extensive capital resources and social
connections that extended across much of the northern Midwest (Lovelady, 1). The young couple
had had two daughters before the birth of their son, but the first had died at age one, and the second
at age three. F. Scott had one younger sister that survived, Anabelle, and she lived a long, complete
life (Bruccoli, 11). F. Scott was often sick as a young child, and the family made frequent trips to the
doctor (Bruccoli, 15). The

F. Scott Fitzgerald and Modernism
F. Scott Fitzgerald and Modernism
During the roaring twenties, the United States was a blemished nation. Crime and corruption were at
an all–time high, the bootlegging business was booming, and throughout all this, people were
euphoric. This time period during the nineteenth and twentieth century was captured by numerous
artists, writers, musicians, and entertainers in their attempts to break from traditional values in what
is known as modernism. A modernist is in simple terms a rebel. One who dislikes normal
conventions and hopes to rewrite and renew societal morals. These artists were rebels with a cause
and fought to expose themselves to society. Fitzgerald is an iconic figure in modernism because he
skews the perception of reality, rejects the stereotypical traditions, and exposes people's struggles as
the American Dream fades away and proves a nightmare.
F. Scott Fitzgerald was fascinated by fame and fortune throughout his lifetime. His characters were
as well. His modernist writing style often reflected how greed and a materialistic attitude destroyed
people and condemned them from the start. Most of his novels were set in the midst of the roaring
twenties where action and the city life engulfed people each night to the point where all problems
seemed forgotten. Nevertheless, Fitzgerald wrote to expose how materialistic people struggled to
find themselves while they lost faith in the American Dream. In The Great Gatsby, the main
character and narrator, Nick

Confrontations are nearly impossible to avoid. As one goes through the journey of life, ideas often
conflict. When ideas conflict they need to be resolved, and this is what often leads to confrontation.
As defined in the Merriam–Webster dictionary, confrontation is the clashing of forces or ideas. To
confront someone is to accuse them of having a different idea, or doing something directly opposed
to you. In the Plaza Hotel scene within his novel, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the
power of confrontation as the climax of his scene with the quote, "What kind of a row are you trying
to cause in my house anyhow?"(129). This is the key question. At this point in the novel Tom
Buchannan has just become aware that his wife, Daisy, is in love with Jay Gatsby. Every previous
event in the chapter has been leading up to this confrontation; this question. By pinning the "row" on
Gatsby, Fitzgerald creates an accusatory tone in Tom. The phrase "in my house", implies Gatsby is a
home–wrecker. When looked at alone, this innocent question seems as though Tom has been
completely wronged by Gatsby, and has every right to directly accuse Jay of is seemingly repugnant
actions. But, it is due to Fitzgerald's context and story line that this accusation of Gatsby is easily
viewed as an attack. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald is continuously using literary devices
to imply that the climax of this scene is this confrontation in the context surrounding it and in doing
so is

From Party to Madness, And Everything In Between F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, "First you take a
drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you". "The good life" can quickly dwindle
into loneliness and sorrow, as portrayed in his masterpiece of a novel The Great Gatsby. Main
character Jay Gatsby is an exceptional example of this. As Gatsby wanders throughout the novel
trying to impress his lost love, Daisy Buchanan, throwing lavish parties and buying her useless
things, only to find himself heartbroken and, tragically, dead. Is it better to have loved and lost, or to
have never loved at all? Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald had many influences in his career to inspire his
works of fiction, some of which being: popular literature of his time, his years at Princeton
University, Zelda Sayre, and alcohol, of course, as the same as many artist of this time. Fitzgerald
was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on September 24, 1896. His parents, Edward and Mary Fitzgerald,
were as he referred to as "straight potato farm Irish", and were not very wealthy people, yet, his
father was a direct decedent of "Star Spangled Banner" composer, Francis Scott Key. Born into
middle– class, Fitzgerald was put through private schools throughout grade school and attended the
Newman School between the years 1911–1913. He proceeded to enroll at Princeton University that
same year. In 1917, being on academic probation and sure he was unable

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, colors represent a variety of symbols that relate
back to the American Dream. The dream of being pure, innocent and perfect is frequently associated
with the reality of corruption, violence, and affairs. Gatsby's desire for achieving the American
Dream is sought for through corruption (Schneider). The American Dream in the 1920s was
perceived as a desire of wealth and social standings. Social class is represented through the East
Egg, the West Egg, and the Valley of the Ashes. The two eggs show how the characters have
obtained their wealth, what they value, and how they live their lives. F. Scott Fitzgerald models the
character of Jay Gatsby after himself and financial and romantic experiences in his personal life.
The Great Gatsby summarizes the yearning for the American dream in the 1920s, through the wealth
of F. Scott Fitzgerald's characters and through the imagery of colors. The importance of wealth and
social standings is emphasized throughout the novel. The East and West Eggs are separated by the
Valley of the Ashes. The people living in the East Egg acquired their money through inheritance and
without having to work for it. The people living in the West Egg have worked for their money to
achieve the American Dream. The West Egg is symbolic of more traditional moral and social values,
while the East Egg symbolizes social and moral deterioration. Gray represents the hopelessness of
the people in the Valley

F. Scott Fitzgerald, a St. Paul, Minnesota native, was born on September 24, 1896. His father,
Edward Fitzgerald, had co–written a novel in his youth and often read works by Edgar Allen Poe
and Lord George Gordon Byron to Scott during his childhood. While Fitzgerald's father praised his
literary attempts, both of his parents encouraged him to pursue other career paths. Nevertheless,
Fitzgerald was steadfast in his literary endeavors, writing for both his high school and college
newspapers. He later dropped out of Princeton University in order to join the army and continued to
pursue writing, penning both magazine articles and musical lyrics (Adams 10–11). At the age of 21,
Fitzgerald submitted his first novel for publication. Charles Scribner's Sons rejected the novel, but
provided Fitzgerald with words of encouragement. Fitzgerald opted to rewrite the novel, then titled
The Romantic Egoist, and resubmit it for publication. Schribners rejected the novel a second time,
prompting Fitzgerald to turn to advertising as his source of income. Fitzgerald eventually rewrote
the novel for a third time, now titled This Side of Paradise, and it was published in 1920. Fitzgerald
married Zelda Sayre, an 18–year–old Southern belle from Alabama with whom he had one prior
failed engagement, a week after the novel was published (Adams 11–12). Fitzgerald, now suddenly
successful and famous, enjoyed the fruits of his labor along with his new wife. His second novel,

Analysis Of F. Scott Fitzgerald
How would you feel if the harder you worked to accomplish your most far–fetched goals and to
advance in society, the harder you would fall and the worse you would suffer at the end of your life?
Many people of that era would have been confused or even surprised by the question when, in
reality, that pattern was repeated over and over again during the 1920s. After the first World War
concluded in 1919, new inventions and reformations were being made, which gave society
newfound optimism. However, due to bad investments made by stockholders, the stock market
crashed in 1929, sending America spiraling into a crippling depression for the next decade ("A
Changing Society" 96). F. Scott Fitzgerald was the most notable author of the decade, and he was
largely self–created. He spent the majority of his life devoted to writing, whether as a pastime, an
occupation, or a way to prove his worthiness to the love of his life. His life was ultimately molded
by the success–seeking template of the 1920s. The most famous of his works was The Great Gatsby,
which brought more success, fame, and riches than he had ever encountered. Toward the end of his
hedonistic life, however, Fitzgerald suffered from long spells of depression, smoked frequently,
drank even more so, and wrote less and less successfully (Doreski 114). He was a true "embodiment
of the age" and a prime example of the decade's formula for success leading to failure ("The 1920s:
How Normal were the 1920s?" 175). Fitzgerald's life

Abuse! Betrayal! Deception! These words read like a headline in The National Enquirer. However,
the words denote connotations woven through the pages of Scott
Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby. The voice of Nick Carraway, chronicles the summer of 1922
that transpires in the vicinity of Long Island, New York. This locale is divided into the East Egg,
populated by those with old money and the West Egg, inhabited by those with new money. The
pursuit of money and pleasure mark this era and far exceed the pursuit of more noble goals. The
interactions of Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby, Daisy and Tom Buchanan and Myrtle and George Wilson
propel the novel and reveal them as insignias of this social trend. (SparkNotes, 24) The amoral
pursuit of money and pleasure through abuse, betrayal and deception leads to greater depravity and
misery. Unquestionably, Tom uses his overall strength and intimidating presence to emotionally and
physically abuse Daisy and Myrtle. A man from an aristocratic family with great wealth, Tom's
arrogance and bully tendencies empower him to treat women abusively. Habitually, Tom's behavior
toward Daisy involves tormenting her emotionally by treating her like an object he possesses. Daisy
willingly accepts Tom's treatment because she deems the benefits of his money and position
outweigh any feelings of unworthiness he projects to her. Myrtle, a willing to participate in an
adulterous relationship with Tom, overlooks his abuse, while

The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald
When many of us hear about the long awaited American dream, we think of working really hard in
the United States and succeeding to provide a good life for ourselfs and or family. The ulitimate goal
is to be truly happy with ones life. That is the longed for American dream. At least this is what
comes to my mind as an immigrant from Mexico. In the novel "The Great Gatsby" by Scott
Fitzgerald he demonstrates failure of the American dream in a number of ways. The characters in
this novel seem to think they have it all in life. They live extravagantly but they are never satisfied.
This is shown in the manner in which most of the characters in this novel live their lives caring only
about their needs. Looking from the outside in:Gatsby, Tom, Daisy, and Nick have very good lives
and they have accomplished what many people strive for, the famous American dream. However as
we are introduced into their intimate personal life we are present with the cold hard truth. The main
characters in The Great Gatsby fail to accomplish the American dream because their lifes are filled
with regrets, obsessions and they are always longing for more.
Gatsby is depicted as one of the characters whose presence in the novel clearly brings out the
thematic structure of how the American dream was not achieved. At the beginning, Gatsby is
presented as a dreamer. He is charming and a little bit mysterious given the fact that no one knows

The Reality in the Haze
F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in a time that was characterized by an unbelievable lack of substance. After
the tragedy and horrors of WWI, people were focused on anything that they could that would
distract from the emptiness that had swallowed them. Tangible greed tied with extreme materialism
left many, by the end of this time period, disenchanted. The usage of the literary theories of both

Just as Gatsby moved to New York and to accumulate massive wealth to impress Daisy Fay;
Fitzgerald moved to New York to earn money to impress Zelda Sayre, the daughter of an Alabama
State Judge. This journey for wealth in order to secure love is quite similar to that of Gatsby's quest
to win over Daisy. It is also important to note the shared feeling of being the odd man out. Fitzgerald
grew up in a wealthy society, but was never quite a part of it completely, largely due to his father's
business failures. Wherever Fitzgerald went or moved to, he was never going to be rich enough to be
with the crowd. Similarly, Gatsby also experienced this same phenomena. He reinvented himself
and made an abundance of money, yet he was still never part of the in crowd. Whose greatest fear
was being "Mr. Nobody from nowhere" (87.) Fitzgerald and Gatsby both shared the same fears and
desires. The application of the biographical lense allows for the characters to be painted in a new
light, showing the real people behind the glitz.
History defines the twenties with one word; excess. The main characters (Gatsby, Tom, and Daisy)
all pine for more and are warped by the live now think later ideology of the twenties. To Gatsby, the
more something costs, the more valuable it is. This is evidenced by his affection for Daisy," "Her

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Society tends to harbor an inherent and often unavoidable nature that unfairly favors those who are
wealthy yet corrupt, and forces those who are moral and noble to suffer. In The Great Gatsby, F.
Scott Fitzgerald comments on this concept with the characters Tom and Gatsby. By comparing and
contrasting Tom and Gatsby in The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald develops his critique of the class
structure of 1920s America that allows corrupt characters to thrive while punishing sympathetic
characters for striving for their dreams.
Fitzgerald contrasts Tom's and Gatsby's old and new money statuses to display the corruption of the
American Dream that sustains society's cruelty. Both characters commit indiscretions, Tom with
women and Gatsby with business ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To compound his immorality, Tom finds no fault in his character. Fitzgerald's criticism of the corrupt
American Dream is evident in the characterization of Tom, because Tom carelessly pursues his
desire to maintain his status and wealth to assert his superiority. His obsession with money and
power blinds him to the damaging effects of this limited view of the American Dream. Similar to
Tom, the indiscretion that Gatsby commits derives from his love for money. However, his motive to
gain wealth is spurred not by ego, but rather by his desire for Daisy's love. This prompts him to
engage in questionable business arrangements with Wolfsheim, whom Gatsby introduces as a
"'denizen of Broadway'" (73) before eventually revealing that Wolfsheim manipulated the World
Series. This reluctance to associate Wolfsheim with crime indicates that Gatsby overlooks this
attribute. This signifies the extent to which the American Dream consumes Gatsby, as he is willing
to involve himself in illicit business deals to achieve his aspirations of winning Daisy back.
Although Gatsby comes from new money unlike Tom, he shares Tom's lust for money and strong
will to accomplish his dreams. However, Fitzgerald presents Tom as a cruel, shallow character and
Gatsby as a sympathetic character, because Gatsby merely longs for love, whereas Tom wishes to
dominate everyone. In this sense, Tom represents humanity that is corrupted by money and power,
while Gatsby demonstrates

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Beginning of Everything "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone...just remember that all the
people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had" (Fitzgerald 1). The first line of The
Great Gatsby illustrates a heartfelt sentiment of treating others respectfully and not judging a book
by its cover. However, as the chapter continues, the narrator Nick Carraway, suggests this propensity
of tolerance is better used as leverage to entice more people to trust you and tell you their secrets.
Nick is privy to the secret lives and untold truths of many rich and powerful people of New York
because he could be trusted, whether he wanted to be or not. This is a constant theme throughout
The Great Gatsby –– the internal struggle of F. Scott Fitzgerald, portrayed through his characters, of
being a kind, honest person content to live his own life versus a grotesquely rich and selfish person
who only cared about himself and living the illusive American Dream. The characters created by F.
Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby strongly reflect influences of people and events in his life, and
demonstrate facets of his personality that dictated how he viewed the world, friendship and love.
People often compensate for things they don't have. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald's character
Gatsby loved Daisy because she was the epitome of everything he wished he had in his youth. She
was rich, exciting and full of life. To win her attention, he throws money into parties, cars

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Dreaming is acceptable at night but we should not daydream so much that we have to dedicate our
lives to our dreams. The Great Gatsby is written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and it is set in the 1920s, the
era known as the Jazz Age. "Fitzgerald is one of the few authors whose life and fiction are one" (F.
Scott Fitzgerald). Fitzgerald was a poor young man from Minnesota, yet handsome and charming.
He fell deeply in love with Ginevra: beautiful, rich, and untouchable. Fitzgerald was a constant
dreamer, so he dreamed of being together with Ginevra despite the enormous social gap between
them. "Ginevra and Fitzgerald break up after two years but he saves all the love letters he revived
from her" (Smith). This shows he still loved her and kept dreaming about her even though he and
Ginevra had gotten married to other people. Eventually, Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby and
achieved great fame and wealth. The Great Gatsby is written from the first person point of view and
is narrated by Nick Carraway, a wealthy and ambitious twenty–nine–year–old. Nick lives in a small
house in the West Egg and his house is on the right side of a big mansion owned by his neighbor,
Jay Gatsby. Similar to Fitzgerald, Gatsby is a very wealthy, handsome, and a constant dreamer,
though he was a poor farmer 's son from Minnesota. Despite his background and lower social status,
Gatsby dreams to marry Daisy Buchanan, who is rich, beautiful, and popular. After Gatsby left for
the war, Daisy marries a

Born in 1896 to a fairly well to–do family, F(rancis). Scott (Key) Fitzgerald is known as one of the
most iconic American authors. He started gathering his fame with publications in Saturday Evening
Post, which was at the time, the most widely read magazine in the United States with 2,750,000
copies sent out per week (Bruccoli 15), and Fitzgerald published the majority of his short stories in
the magazine. He had many major themes throughout his works, be it novel, novella, essay, or short
story, each had at least one of his common themes. These are: the allure of wealth, aspiration,
mutability and loss, the rich are different from the average person, love, death, the American myth
of success, war, selfishness, and loneliness. Fitzgerald also has a style of writing that readers will
immediately know to be his if they have read another of his works. His style is cheery, witty, lyrical,
and colorful all in one package. Not only does Fitzgerald have a unique style, but he puts himself
into his stories. His most well–known short stories are "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz," "Babylon
Revisited," and "Bernice Bobs Her Hair." In all of these, he puts a semblance of his own life. Be it
with his wife, himself, or just the way the world is around him. "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz,"

typical Fitzgerald themes, but this story also parallels his life in a smaller sense. Both

Money, Power, and Glory For many years girls have been taught to find true love and get married
and be happy. Happiness, something that can be so undetermined, is what one spends ones entire life
searching for. F. Scott Fitzgerald, a poetic and romantic writer, shows his definition of happiness
through every story he has written. Fitzgerald's background starts as a hopeless romantic, winning
over the heart of his wife by rewriting a novel he had previously started on. Fitzgerald's focus his
entire life was becoming something, and wanting fame. During this 20's, if one didn't have the
dazzle, and the glamour, one was nothing. Even the people that say that they don't care about all of
that want to be wanted. Fitzgerald captures the human wanting to be known and admired perfectly
in his stories. The writer also captures the down side to "happiness." When happiness is set around
material and people, it takes away from the human being making them shallow and cold.
Fitzgerald's has the writing reputation of realistic wealthy men wanting the power and social class
that everyone else seems to have, and find a nice beauty to trophy around. His characters are all
shallow men and women looking for happiness in material. His themes are all focus around the
obsession with the american dream. His settings are all set

Analysis Of F. Scott Fitzgerald
F. Scott Fitzgerald was an American author who was known for his novels that generally take place
during the Jazz Age after World War I. His use of similes add deeper imagery and to emphasize
certain descriptions that are necessary to understand in his distinctive writing style. Fitzgerald
incorporated a lot of his own personal life into his works; his struggles with alcoholism, mental
disorders and marital problems are generally thrown into almost all his novels. Many of his stories
can be read for their symbolic qualities. Therefore, F. Scott Fitzgerald was popular for using
uncommon and intricate descriptions to help the reader better grasp what is going on in the story.
When F. Scott Fitzgerald was twenty–three, he published his first novel This Side of Paradise which
tells the life of Amory Blaine from his childhood to his young adulthood who travels out to New
England to attend a boarding school and, later on, Princeton. "This type of novel is known in the
literary world as a Bildungsroman which is a novel of personal and moral formation. Fitzgerald
demonstrates his unique voice and style and even includes poetry and theater within the work"
(Quiklit). At the beginning of the story, Amory acts like a selfish and spoiled child. But as he gets
older, he becomes aware of his over inflated ego and begins to ponder on how he could become a
better person. He tries religion but it doesn 't really satisfy him and his intimate relationship with

Essay on F Scott Fitzgerald
F Scott Fitzgerald Influence plays a major role in the lives of all artists. Whether it is a painter,
musician, or author, if they hadn't been influenced in some way, their work would be nowhere near
as compelling as it is. What shines through in the work of any artist is emotion; if art was without
emotion it's pretty inevitable that it would not draw so large an audience. In fact, without emotion or
influence, art would have an almost scientific feel to it. It is because of the individual influences on
the artists life that we as humans are so attracted to various forms of art.

The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald 's 1925 novel The Great Gatsby is a tragic love story, a mystery, and a social
commentary on American life. The Great Gatsby is about the lives of four wealthy characters
observed by the narrator, Nick Carroway. Throughout the novel a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby
throws immaculate parties every Saturday night in hope to impress his lost lover, Daisy Buchanan.
Gatsby lives in a mansion on West Egg across from Daisy who lives in East Egg. From the law of
Gatsby 's mansion, he can see the green light glowing on her dock, which becomes a symbol in the
novel of an unreachable treasure. Even though Daisy is a married woman, Gatsby sets out to win her
back. A profound indictment of class and privilege, The Great Gatsby explores the conflict between
decency and self indulgence. In the conclusion, the characters collide, leaving human wreckage in
their wake.
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on September 24, 1896. His father,
Edward, was from Maryland, with an allegiance to the Old South and its values. Fitzgerald's mother,
Mollie, was the daughter of an Irish immigrant who became wealthy as a wholesale grocer in St.
Paul. Edward Fitzgerald failed as a manufacturer of wicker furniture in St. Paul, and he became a
salesman for Procter & Gamble in upstate New York. After he was fired from his job in 1908,

Heavy Use Of Technology In F Scotts Fitzgerald By F. Scott...
In today's technology riddled world, society has changed its acceptable moral behavior. We tend to
value material possessions a lot more than we do people or life in general. We allow this type of
gluttonous behavior in our society because we enjoy the tangible things that we can manipulate. We
enjoy the mental stimulation it provides us, and we can get enough of it which turns us to be
greedier than we used to. We put so much value in material wealth that we are willing to obtain it
even when it requires taking people's livelihood, their lives, and even other creature's lives. We have
ingrained it into our minds that bigger is better and we have in established it into the future
generation's minds that this type of behavior is acceptable and it is what you need to do to show
everyone that you are successful. This mainly happens in first world countries and some third world
countries. The main reason for this is that people can't make meaningful relationships as they used
to and this can be attributed to the heavy use of technology. The visual stimulation that technology
provides makes us addicted to your screens causing us to disregard the need for any social contact in
the real world. Along with that for people to establish a meaningful relationship they must go
through hardship together and take risks together, and that is greatly nullified with social media and
heavy use of technology altogether. Along with that, the author F. Scotts Fitzgerald portrayed

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
The 1920s witnessed the death of the American Dream, a message immortalized in F. Scott
Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Initially, the American Dream represented the outcome of American
ideals, that everyone has the freedom and opportunity to achieve their dreams provided they perform
honest hard work. During the 1920s, the United States experienced massive economic prosperity
making the American Dream seem alive and strong. However, in Fitzgerald's eyes, the new
American culture build around that massive prosperity corrupted and destroyed the American Dream
in a time of great indulgence due to great prosperity. To that extent, The Great Gatsby employs
setting and character development to define the American Dream, condemn its bastardization, and
depict its demise during the Jazz Age.
Through Gatsby, Fitzgerald both defines the American Dream and depicts its corruption. Gatsby
started out as James Gatz, a "penniless young man without a past" (Fitzgerald, 149). He grew up
extremely poor, having to work various jobs, some degrading and humiliating, in order to survive.
However, in the true spirit of the American Dream, he used the opportunities presented to him to
make himself a rich man. Through bootlegging, Gatsby earned a fortune that allowed him a
"mansion" (5), a "yellow" "Rolls–Royce," and extravagant parties (39). However, despite depicting
Gatsby as a truer form of the American Dream, Fitzgerald still depicts the corruption behind his
version. Gatsby's fortune

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
There are secrets hidden between the lines of each sentence. The author has been careful to keep
them hidden. He tried to make it so no one can decipher his own life within the lives of his
characters. Sometimes it is unintended for the author to mirror his life in his book. In his previous
novels F. Scott Fitzgerald drew from his life experiences. He said that his next novel, The Great
Gatsby, would be different. He said, "In my new novel I'm thrown directly on purely creative work"
(F. Scott Fitzgerald). He did not realize or did not want it to appear that he was taking his own story
and intertwining it within his new novel. In The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, he imitates his
lifestyle through the Buchanan family to demonstrate that the behavior of the wealthy was reckless
and selfish. Living in the lap of luxury can cause people to be reckless and selfish. Fitzgerald and his
wife, Zelda, tried to live up to the impossible challenge of being in the lime light. Once Fitzgerald's
book, This Side of Paradise, became a popular; Zelda agreed to marry him. They moved to New

Love, a word that is uttered so often. A word that has been immersed into music and art and theatre.
An emotion that can be considered one of the strongest and most powerful of them all. The way love

an author or musician may feel about this certain emotion. Ask an author to elucidate their idea of

The Cynicism Of Love By F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Cynicism of Love
During the Roaring Twenties, writer F. Scott Fitzgerald composed the classic American novel
known as The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald has some problems along the way, "his drinking became an
increasing problem" (Bowers 10). Which it lead his debts score to increase. The fictitious narrative
retells the journey of Jay Gatsby as he chases his one true love and faces many obstacles and
interruptions along the way. Hopeless romantic is a term that would highly describe Gatsby as well
as Fitzgerald. In fact, Fitzgerald is madly in love with a wealthy neglecting girl named Ginevra who
is undoubtedly the inspiration behind many of his female characters. In a daze of strange innocence,
the two meet at a sledding party in his hometown and soon began corresponding through writing
letters. Daisy got married to a wealthy socialite named Tom Buchanan, resembling when Ginevra
got engaged and soon married Bill Mitchell. The love for her is still extremely emotional that
"Fitzgerald constantly begged her to reveal her inmost thoughts and details of her past" (Smith).
Ginevra is Fitzgerald 's first love and it is clearly not an immaculate love story as Ginevra drifted
apart from him, comparable to Daisy and Gatsby's situation. Gatsby throws enormous parties,
hoping his one true love appears one day. Jordan and Nick hear all kind of rumors about Gatsby and
they go on to do research. Gatsby and Daisy finally reunite again with Daisy at Nick's house for a

Brainy Quote By F. Scott Fitzgerald

  • 1. Brainy Quote By F. Scott Fitzgerald "The wise writer writes for the youth of his own generation, the critics of the next, and the schoolmasters of ever afterward," (Fitzgerald qtd. In "BrainyQuote"). This quote shows why Fitzgerald's writings have continued to be present in modern generations. With multiple films out in recent years many of his writings have become household names. F. Scott Fitzgerald's national fame is a result of his early life, writing career, and his eventual downfall. According to Biography editors, Francis Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on September 24, 1896. His mother was from an Irish–Catholic family that had made a living as grocers in Minnesota. As he was growing up his father owned an unsuccessful furniture store. Throughout his childhood he constantly moved between Buffalo and Syracuse several times. He would eventually return to St. Paul at the age of 12. At the age of 13 he went to school at St. Paul Academy. While at St. Paul Academy he wrote "a detective story" that was put in their school paper (F. Scott Fitzgerald Biography). • 3. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby The Jazz Age was an era where everything and anything seemed possible. It started with the beginning of a new age with America coming out of World War I as the most powerful nation in the world (Novel reflections on, 2007). As a result, the nation soon faced a culture–shock of material prosperity during the 1920's. Also known as the "roaring twenties", it was a time where life consisted of prodigality and extravagant parties. Writing based on his personal experiences, author F. Scott Fitzgerald, distinctly conveys through The Great Gatsby the change within America's society, class differences, and the effect of an absence of religion through the corruption of the "American Dream" during the Jazz Age. An ocean of immigrants arrived in America to start a new life searching for any available jobs during the seventeenth century. They brought upon a new belief of self–innovation through their hard work and a dedication called the "American Dream." This dream represented the idea that a person wanting to become successful would put in hard work striving for advancement and that this potential advantage actually exists. F. Scott Fitzgerald helped seek the undergoing routines among the elite during the Jazz age. It was primarily through the narrator, Nick Carraway, that the author presents the illusion and aura of a man named Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is an example of the corruption of the American Dream during the 1920's. Gatsby, the main character within the novel, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Andy Swenson: What are some other key themes found in the novel? F Scott Fitzgerald: It depends on the readers interpretation but for me personally its Love and Class, both of theses played a huge role in the book. I view love as a foolish thing and I showed this in the novel by the use of the main character "Jay Gatsby". He fell in love with Daisy which made him look like a fool because Daisy is already with Tom. Class brings me back to the American Dream, which does not exist since we're all who we are when we're born. Changing class can lead to tragedy which could be pretty grim for people in World War 1. Andy Swenson: Thank you very much Mr. Fitzgerald it's an honor to finally meet you, have a great day F Scott Fitzgerald: No problem, thank you for the interview and have a great day too Word Count: 914 Rationale For this unit, I've decided to do an interview transcript of an interview with F. • 13. The Genius Of Fitzgerald By F. Scott Fitzgerald Nick Drake Ms. Howe & Dr. Myhan World Cultures 24 January 2016 The Genius of Fitzgerald In order to spot a literary genius, it is necessary for one to first define the word literary genius. What makes a literary genius? Though a broad term that can be applied to many situations, a literary genius can best be described as an author who has a timeless impact on literature with themes that resonate with every kind of person. F. Scott Fitzgerald, along with several others, is the epitome of a literary genius. Fitzgerald's works like This Side of Paradise and Tender is the Night are both great stories and, in a deeper and more analytical context, works that reflect the reality of the world. The world isn't in the most ideal state, and Fitzgerald knows that. From describing the lonesome life of wealth and riches to examining how people feel about romance, Fitzgerald's works will always be applicable to life. In This Side of Paradise, the main character, Amory Blaine, is essentially on a quest to find values that suit him. Throughout every aspect of life, Blaine is found repeatedly trying and failing different methods of living. Blaine was raised in a very unconventional environment. Due to this, Blaine is seen trying to counter this upbringing by acting in a conventional manner. This is first observed when Blaine comes back to Beatrice after a 2 year separation. "No, Beatrice. I enjoyed them. I adapted myself to the bourgeoisie. I became conventional." (Paradise ?). With that in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald F. Scott Fitzgerald was the model of the American image in the nineteen twenties. He had wealth, fame, a beautiful wife, and an adorable daughter; all seemed perfect. Beneath the gilded façade, however, was an author who struggled with domestic and physical difficulties that plagued his personal life and career throughout its short span. This author helped to launch the theme that is so prevalent in his work; the human instinct to yearn for more, into the forefront of American literature, where it would remain a common topic of writing to this day. Far below the partying and drinking front of F. Scott Fitzgerald lay a common man who wrote from the heart, and held nothing back. On September 24, 1896 in a quiet neighborhood of St. Paul Minnesota, Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born to Edward Fitzgerald and his wife, Mollie McQuillan Fitzgerald. Edward was from a wealthy old family in Maryland with relations to F. Scott's namesake; Francis Scott Key. Mollie was a wealthy daughter of a native St. Paul family with extensive capital resources and social connections that extended across much of the northern Midwest (Lovelady, 1). The young couple had had two daughters before the birth of their son, but the first had died at age one, and the second at age three. F. Scott had one younger sister that survived, Anabelle, and she lived a long, complete life (Bruccoli, 11). F. Scott was often sick as a young child, and the family made frequent trips to the doctor (Bruccoli, 15). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. F. Scott Fitzgerald and Modernism F. Scott Fitzgerald and Modernism During the roaring twenties, the United States was a blemished nation. Crime and corruption were at an all–time high, the bootlegging business was booming, and throughout all this, people were euphoric. This time period during the nineteenth and twentieth century was captured by numerous artists, writers, musicians, and entertainers in their attempts to break from traditional values in what is known as modernism. A modernist is in simple terms a rebel. One who dislikes normal conventions and hopes to rewrite and renew societal morals. These artists were rebels with a cause and fought to expose themselves to society. Fitzgerald is an iconic figure in modernism because he skews the perception of reality, rejects the stereotypical traditions, and exposes people's struggles as the American Dream fades away and proves a nightmare. F. Scott Fitzgerald was fascinated by fame and fortune throughout his lifetime. His characters were as well. His modernist writing style often reflected how greed and a materialistic attitude destroyed people and condemned them from the start. Most of his novels were set in the midst of the roaring twenties where action and the city life engulfed people each night to the point where all problems seemed forgotten. Nevertheless, Fitzgerald wrote to expose how materialistic people struggled to find themselves while they lost faith in the American Dream. • 19. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald Confrontations are nearly impossible to avoid. As one goes through the journey of life, ideas often conflict. When ideas conflict they need to be resolved, and this is what often leads to confrontation. As defined in the Merriam–Webster dictionary, confrontation is the clashing of forces or ideas. To confront someone is to accuse them of having a different idea, or doing something directly opposed to you. In the Plaza Hotel scene within his novel, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the power of confrontation as the climax of his scene with the quote, "What kind of a row are you trying to cause in my house anyhow?"(129). This is the key question. At this point in the novel Tom Buchannan has just become aware that his wife, Daisy, is in love with Jay Gatsby. Every previous event in the chapter has been leading up to this confrontation; this question. By pinning the "row" on Gatsby, Fitzgerald creates an accusatory tone in Tom. The phrase "in my house", implies Gatsby is a home–wrecker. When looked at alone, this innocent question seems as though Tom has been completely wronged by Gatsby, and has every right to directly accuse Jay of is seemingly repugnant actions. But, it is due to Fitzgerald's context and story line that this accusation of Gatsby is easily viewed as an attack. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald is continuously using literary devices to imply that the climax of this scene is this confrontation in the context surrounding it and in doing so is ... • 21. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald Camdon Green Mrs. Navarro English III 3 October 2014 From Party to Madness, And Everything In Between F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, "First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you". "The good life" can quickly dwindle into loneliness and sorrow, as portrayed in his masterpiece of a novel The Great Gatsby. Main character Jay Gatsby is an exceptional example of this. As Gatsby wanders throughout the novel trying to impress his lost love, Daisy Buchanan, throwing lavish parties and buying her useless things, only to find himself heartbroken and, tragically, dead. Is it better to have loved and lost, or to have never loved at all? Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald had many influences in his career to inspire his works of fiction, some of which being: popular literature of his time, his years at Princeton University, Zelda Sayre, and alcohol, of course, as the same as many artist of this time. Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on September 24, 1896. His parents, Edward and Mary Fitzgerald, were as he referred to as "straight potato farm Irish", and were not very wealthy people, yet, his father was a direct decedent of "Star Spangled Banner" composer, Francis Scott Key. Born into middle– class, Fitzgerald was put through private schools throughout grade school and attended the Newman School between the years 1911–1913. • 23. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, colors represent a variety of symbols that relate back to the American Dream. The dream of being pure, innocent and perfect is frequently associated with the reality of corruption, violence, and affairs. Gatsby's desire for achieving the American Dream is sought for through corruption (Schneider). The American Dream in the 1920s was perceived as a desire of wealth and social standings. Social class is represented through the East Egg, the West Egg, and the Valley of the Ashes. The two eggs show how the characters have obtained their wealth, what they value, and how they live their lives. F. Scott Fitzgerald models the character of Jay Gatsby after himself and financial and romantic experiences in his personal life. The Great Gatsby summarizes the yearning for the American dream in the 1920s, through the wealth of F. Scott Fitzgerald's characters and through the imagery of colors. The importance of wealth and social standings is emphasized throughout the novel. The East and West Eggs are separated by the Valley of the Ashes. The people living in the East Egg acquired their money through inheritance and without having to work for it. The people living in the West Egg have worked for their money to achieve the American Dream. The West Egg is symbolic of more traditional moral and social values, while the East Egg symbolizes social and moral deterioration. Gray represents the hopelessness of the people in the Valley ... • 25. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald F. Scott Fitzgerald, a St. Paul, Minnesota native, was born on September 24, 1896. His father, Edward Fitzgerald, had co–written a novel in his youth and often read works by Edgar Allen Poe and Lord George Gordon Byron to Scott during his childhood. While Fitzgerald's father praised his literary attempts, both of his parents encouraged him to pursue other career paths. Nevertheless, Fitzgerald was steadfast in his literary endeavors, writing for both his high school and college newspapers. He later dropped out of Princeton University in order to join the army and continued to pursue writing, penning both magazine articles and musical lyrics (Adams 10–11). At the age of 21, Fitzgerald submitted his first novel for publication. Charles Scribner's Sons rejected the novel, but provided Fitzgerald with words of encouragement. Fitzgerald opted to rewrite the novel, then titled The Romantic Egoist, and resubmit it for publication. Schribners rejected the novel a second time, prompting Fitzgerald to turn to advertising as his source of income. Fitzgerald eventually rewrote the novel for a third time, now titled This Side of Paradise, and it was published in 1920. Fitzgerald married Zelda Sayre, an 18–year–old Southern belle from Alabama with whom he had one prior failed engagement, a week after the novel was published (Adams 11–12). Fitzgerald, now suddenly successful and famous, enjoyed the fruits of his labor along with his new wife. His second novel, The Beautiful and Damned, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Analysis Of F. Scott Fitzgerald How would you feel if the harder you worked to accomplish your most far–fetched goals and to advance in society, the harder you would fall and the worse you would suffer at the end of your life? Many people of that era would have been confused or even surprised by the question when, in reality, that pattern was repeated over and over again during the 1920s. After the first World War concluded in 1919, new inventions and reformations were being made, which gave society newfound optimism. However, due to bad investments made by stockholders, the stock market crashed in 1929, sending America spiraling into a crippling depression for the next decade ("A Changing Society" 96). F. Scott Fitzgerald was the most notable author of the decade, and he was largely self–created. He spent the majority of his life devoted to writing, whether as a pastime, an occupation, or a way to prove his worthiness to the love of his life. His life was ultimately molded by the success–seeking template of the 1920s. The most famous of his works was The Great Gatsby, which brought more success, fame, and riches than he had ever encountered. Toward the end of his hedonistic life, however, Fitzgerald suffered from long spells of depression, smoked frequently, drank even more so, and wrote less and less successfully (Doreski 114). He was a true "embodiment of the age" and a prime example of the decade's formula for success leading to failure ("The 1920s: How Normal were the 1920s?" 175). Fitzgerald's life ... However, the words denote connotations woven through the pages of Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby. The voice of Nick Carraway, chronicles the summer of 1922 that transpires in the vicinity of Long Island, New York. This locale is divided into the East Egg, populated by those with old money and the West Egg, inhabited by those with new money. The pursuit of money and pleasure mark this era and far exceed the pursuit of more noble goals. The interactions of Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby, Daisy and Tom Buchanan and Myrtle and George Wilson propel the novel and reveal them as insignias of this social trend. (SparkNotes, 24) The amoral pursuit of money and pleasure through abuse, betrayal and deception leads to greater depravity and misery. Unquestionably, Tom uses his overall strength and intimidating presence to emotionally and physically abuse Daisy and Myrtle. A man from an aristocratic family with great wealth, Tom's arrogance and bully tendencies empower him to treat women abusively. Habitually, Tom's behavior toward Daisy involves tormenting her emotionally by treating her like an object he possesses. Daisy willingly accepts Tom's treatment because she deems the benefits of his money and position outweigh any feelings of unworthiness he projects to her. • 31. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald When many of us hear about the long awaited American dream, we think of working really hard in the United States and succeeding to provide a good life for ourselfs and or family. The ulitimate goal is to be truly happy with ones life. That is the longed for American dream. At least this is what comes to my mind as an immigrant from Mexico. In the novel "The Great Gatsby" by Scott Fitzgerald he demonstrates failure of the American dream in a number of ways. The characters in this novel seem to think they have it all in life. They live extravagantly but they are never satisfied. This is shown in the manner in which most of the characters in this novel live their lives caring only about their needs. Looking from the outside in:Gatsby, Tom, Daisy, and Nick have very good lives and they have accomplished what many people strive for, the famous American dream. However as we are introduced into their intimate personal life we are present with the cold hard truth. The main characters in The Great Gatsby fail to accomplish the American dream because their lifes are filled with regrets, obsessions and they are always longing for more. Gatsby is depicted as one of the characters whose presence in the novel clearly brings out the thematic structure of how the American dream was not achieved. Just as Gatsby moved to New York and to accumulate massive wealth to impress Daisy Fay; Fitzgerald moved to New York to earn money to impress Zelda Sayre, the daughter of an Alabama State Judge. This journey for wealth in order to secure love is quite similar to that of Gatsby's quest to win over Daisy. It is also important to note the shared feeling of being the odd man out. Fitzgerald grew up in a wealthy society, but was never quite a part of it completely, largely due to his father's business failures. Wherever Fitzgerald went or moved to, he was never going to be rich enough to be with the crowd. Similarly, Gatsby also experienced this same phenomena. He reinvented himself and made an abundance of money, yet he was still never part of the in crowd. Whose greatest fear was being "Mr. Nobody from nowhere" (87.) • 41. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald Society tends to harbor an inherent and often unavoidable nature that unfairly favors those who are wealthy yet corrupt, and forces those who are moral and noble to suffer. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald comments on this concept with the characters Tom and Gatsby. By comparing and contrasting Tom and Gatsby in The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald develops his critique of the class structure of 1920s America that allows corrupt characters to thrive while punishing sympathetic characters for striving for their dreams. Fitzgerald contrasts Tom's and Gatsby's old and new money statuses to display the corruption of the American Dream that sustains society's cruelty. Fitzgerald's criticism of the corrupt American Dream is evident in the characterization of Tom, because Tom carelessly pursues his desire to maintain his status and wealth to assert his superiority. His obsession with money and power blinds him to the damaging effects of this limited view of the American Dream. Similar to Tom, the indiscretion that Gatsby commits derives from his love for money. However, his motive to gain wealth is spurred not by ego, but rather by his desire for Daisy's love. This prompts him to engage in questionable business arrangements with Wolfsheim, whom Gatsby introduces as a "'denizen of Broadway'" (73) before eventually revealing that Wolfsheim manipulated the World Series. This reluctance to associate Wolfsheim with crime indicates that Gatsby overlooks this attribute. This signifies the extent to which the American Dream consumes Gatsby, as he is willing to involve himself in illicit business deals to achieve his aspirations of winning Daisy back. Although Gatsby comes from new money unlike Tom, he shares Tom's lust for money and strong will to accomplish his dreams. However, Fitzgerald presents Tom as a cruel, shallow character and Gatsby as a sympathetic character, because Gatsby merely longs for love, whereas Tom wishes to dominate everyone. In this sense, Tom represents humanity that is corrupted by money and power, while Gatsby demonstrates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first line of The Great Gatsby illustrates a heartfelt sentiment of treating others respectfully and not judging a book by its cover. However, as the chapter continues, the narrator Nick Carraway, suggests this propensity of tolerance is better used as leverage to entice more people to trust you and tell you their secrets. Nick is privy to the secret lives and untold truths of many rich and powerful people of New York because he could be trusted, whether he wanted to be or not. This is a constant theme throughout The Great Gatsby –– the internal struggle of F. Scott Fitzgerald and it is set in the 1920s, the era known as the Jazz Age. "Fitzgerald is one of the few authors whose life and fiction are one" (F. Scott Fitzgerald). Fitzgerald was a poor young man from Minnesota, yet handsome and charming. He fell deeply in love with Ginevra: beautiful, rich, and untouchable. Fitzgerald was a constant dreamer, so he dreamed of being together with Ginevra despite the enormous social gap between them. "Ginevra and Fitzgerald break up after two years but he saves all the love letters he revived from her" (Smith). This shows he still loved her and kept dreaming about her even though he and Ginevra had gotten married to other people. Eventually, Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby and achieved great fame and wealth. The Great Gatsby is written from the first person point of view and is narrated by Nick Carraway, a wealthy and ambitious twenty–nine–year–old. Nick lives in a small house in the West Egg and his house is on the right side of a big mansion owned by his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Similar to Fitzgerald, Gatsby is a very wealthy, handsome, and a constant dreamer, though he was a poor farmer 's son from Minnesota. Money, Power, and Glory For many years girls have been taught to find true love and get married and be happy. Happiness, something that can be so undetermined, is what one spends ones entire life searching for. F. Scott Fitzgerald, a poetic and romantic writer, shows his definition of happiness through every story he has written. Fitzgerald's background starts as a hopeless romantic, winning over the heart of his wife by rewriting a novel he had previously started on. Fitzgerald's focus his entire life was becoming something, and wanting fame. During this 20's, if one didn't have the dazzle, and the glamour, one was nothing. Even the people that say that they don't care about all of that want to be wanted. Fitzgerald captures the human wanting to be known and admired perfectly in his stories. The writer also captures the down side to "happiness." When happiness is set around material and people, it takes away from the human being making them shallow and cold. Fitzgerald's has the writing reputation of realistic wealthy men wanting the power and social class that everyone else seems to have, and find a nice beauty to trophy around. Whether it is a painter, musician, or author, if they hadn't been influenced in some way, their work would be nowhere near as compelling as it is. Gatsby lives in a mansion on West Egg across from Daisy who lives in East Egg. From the law of Gatsby 's mansion, he can see the green light glowing on her dock, which becomes a symbol in the novel of an unreachable treasure. Even though Daisy is a married woman, Gatsby sets out to win her back. A profound indictment of class and privilege, The Great Gatsby explores the conflict between decency and self indulgence. In the conclusion, the characters collide, leaving human wreckage in their wake. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on September 24, 1896. • 62. Heavy Use Of Technology In F Scotts Fitzgerald By F. Scott... In today's technology riddled world, society has changed its acceptable moral behavior. We tend to value material possessions a lot more than we do people or life in general. We allow this type of gluttonous behavior in our society because we enjoy the tangible things that we can manipulate. We enjoy the mental stimulation it provides us, and we can get enough of it which turns us to be greedier than we used to. We put so much value in material wealth that we are willing to obtain it even when it requires taking people's livelihood, their lives, and even other creature's lives. We have ingrained it into our minds that bigger is better and we have in established it into the future generation's minds that this type of behavior is acceptable and it is what you need to do to show everyone that you are successful. This mainly happens in first world countries and some third world countries. The main reason for this is that people can't make meaningful relationships as they used to and this can be attributed to the heavy use of technology. The visual stimulation that technology provides makes us addicted to your screens causing us to disregard the need for any social contact in the real world. Along with that for people to establish a meaningful relationship they must go through hardship together and take risks together, and that is greatly nullified with social media and heavy use of technology altogether. Along with that, the author F. Scotts Fitzgerald portrayed material wealth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald The 1920s witnessed the death of the American Dream, a message immortalized in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Initially, the American Dream represented the outcome of American ideals, that everyone has the freedom and opportunity to achieve their dreams provided they perform honest hard work. During the 1920s, the United States experienced massive economic prosperity making the American Dream seem alive and strong. However, in Fitzgerald's eyes, the new American culture build around that massive prosperity corrupted and destroyed the American Dream in a time of great indulgence due to great prosperity. To that extent, The Great Gatsby employs setting and character development to define the American Dream, condemn its bastardization, and depict its demise during the Jazz Age. Through Gatsby, Fitzgerald both defines the American Dream and depicts its corruption. Gatsby started out as James Gatz, a "penniless young man without a past" (Fitzgerald, 149). He grew up extremely poor, having to work various jobs, some degrading and humiliating, in order to survive. However, in the true spirit of the American Dream, he used the opportunities presented to him to make himself a rich man. Through bootlegging, Gatsby earned a fortune that allowed him a "mansion" (5), a "yellow" "Rolls–Royce," and extravagant parties (39). However, despite depicting Gatsby as a truer form of the American Dream, Fitzgerald still depicts the corruption behind his version. Gatsby's fortune ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald There are secrets hidden between the lines of each sentence. The author has been careful to keep them hidden. He tried to make it so no one can decipher his own life within the lives of his characters. Sometimes it is unintended for the author to mirror his life in his book. In his previous novels F. Scott Fitzgerald drew from his life experiences. He said that his next novel, The Great Gatsby, would be different. He said, "In my new novel I'm thrown directly on purely creative work" (F. Scott Fitzgerald). He did not realize or did not want it to appear that he was taking his own story and intertwining it within his new novel. In The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, he imitates his lifestyle through the Buchanan family to demonstrate that the behavior of the wealthy was reckless and selfish. Living in the lap of luxury can cause people to be reckless and selfish. Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, tried to live up to the impossible challenge of being in the lime light. Once Fitzgerald's book, This Side of Paradise, became a popular; Zelda agreed to marry him. They moved to New York City and started living a wild life of continuous parties. According to Norma Jean Lutz in the book Biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald, "In the Knickerbocker Hotel, Scott threw $20 and $50 bills around like confetti and Zelda jumped into the fountain at Union Station"(21). They were the celebrities of the day.
