Crisis Management Examples
Crisis Management "Crisis management is the management of operations during the actual crisis (in
the midst of the event) and the management of the business before, during, and after the crisis. Most
crises require management from the outside–in and the inside–out by the management team"
(Nykiel, 2005). A crisis whether internal and or external can occur at any moment in a hospitality
industry. For example "internal crisis in the hospitality industry include a breakout of a food borne
illness in a restaurant, infestation of rodents in a hotel and an outbreak of the flu on a cruise line" (L.
Pullium, personal communication, September 11, 2008). Some examples of external crisis are

Financial Management And Financial Crisis
Since the financial crisis is the value of financial institutions or assets in one country or several
countries drops rapidly, and it can affect the stability and development of the relevant country or
region even the world economic. The causes of this situation should be well studied to prevent the
recurrence.
This essay is discuss if the financial crisis that was globally experienced following events in 2008 is
an example which can prove the financial engineering and corporate governance gone wrong and try
to explain the reason.
The financial crisis can be also called financial storm. The nearest global financial crisis was started
from 2007, evolved by the US Subprime mortgage crisis. The Subprime mortgage crisis is also

The essential cause of subprime lending problem and the payment crisis is the decline of the housing
price which leaded to the solvency of the subprime loans borrowers decline. For this reason, the
deep problem behind the Subprime mortgage crisis is the housing market correction in the US. The
Federal Reserve used the loose monetary policy to cut interest rate. The strong growth in the global
economy and the pursuits of high returns, lead to the preference for risk between the global
investors increased. As the easy access to loans, it was contributed to the growth of the housing
market. In the environment of house prices rose and low interest rate, the weakly risk awareness of
both lenders and borrowers were increasing, which leaded to the rapid growth of subprime
mortgages in the US. By the reason that the US interest rate hiked, the real estate prices began to fall
at 2006. (Simkovic, n.d.) The delinquency rate of mortgage increased significantly, the number of
people who were unable to pay off the house is increased. Once the mortgage is cleared, it is
resulting in credit losses eventually. Different from all the past real estate market fluctuation, this
Subprime mortgage crisis caused the re–pricing of entire stock market, especially the derivative
products, and this brought great uncertainty to the subprime market. The investors were difficult to
assess the value of the product and risk directly. At the same time,

take part in some of the disaster preparedness practices like drills and trainings on evacuation
processes. It has proved to be a very effective way of saving lives in a case of a disaster or crisis
event happening in their respective accommodation areas.(Ritchie, 2008). Many tourists on holidays
have proved that the use of safety material put in place by hotels has been effective. Again with the
example of Thailand, most hotels will warn guests by supplying notices in rooms advising not to
drink tap water at any costs and provide bottled water for guests to prevent them from becoming
sick. Practices such as this have reduced various risks to tourist health like serious illness in a
foreign country. It has additionally helped in a reduction in the consumption of unsafe foods and
drinks which could be detrimental to their health (Ritchie, 2008). CADD Emirates has ditched the
electronic key access and adopted biometric registration allowing guests to use their fingerprints to
enter rooms by placing their fingers on a device. The theory is that their biometric data will be easily
recognizable across other locations simplifying check in. (Trader, 2012). This system has eased the

Crisis Management: Why Businesses Should Have an Active...
Crisis Management Crisis communication is one of the most important and neglected components of
organizational communication in today's business world. It is vital that every corporation have
contingency plans for emergency situations, both natural and man–made. Studies show that eighty
percent of organizations confronted with a major disaster runs out of business within two years.
(Hickman & Crandall 1997) Nevertheless, we also know that almost forty percent of all Fortune
1000 companies have an operational crisis management plan in place. (Hickman & Crandall 1997)
This paper will examine and evaluate three journals that discuss different aspects and needs for an
active crisis plan. The first journal evaluated comes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Hickman & Crandall 1997) Within this crisis management plan are many department and personnel
specific plans that need individual attention. A few examples of these that are present in most
organizations are Information Systems, Human Resources, Public Information and
Communications, and Operations Management. Information Systems is charged with creating
backup files and establishing a "hot site" for the company to conduct business in the interim of
disaster rebuild. Human Resources focuses on establishing the care for families, community
reconstruction efforts, and a system for extensive counseling depending on the type of disaster.
Public Information and Communications touches upon many vital areas of the business. Not only
must they handle the public relations aspects of crisis, but they must lay a foundation for emergency
communications needed for every aspect of reconstruction, whether of a companies image or site.
Finally Operations Management is the critical component of carrying out the tactical side of a crisis
management plan. They must have and execute plans for recovery of assets, restoration and use of
emergency power, food and other emergency supplies; the securing of gas valves and other
dangerous apparatus; and getting in contact with all the key players and information in case of a
crisis. (Hickman & Crandall 1997) The next journal

Toyota Crisis: Management Ignorance?
Abstract
Since the late 2009, the famous vehicle manufacture Toyota has suffered a severe crisis due to
unintended quality problems in its cars which had triggered Toyota's largest officially recalls of its
cars around the world. This crisis threatens the company's previous reputation of good quality cars,
as well as the brand image built up over time. This study aims to elaborate on the Toyota crisis in
order to understand why Toyota faces this crisis and how they deal with the crisis; and investigate
consumers' perceptions of Toyota brand as the outcome of the crisis, with a focus on Swedish
market. A qualitative research along with a number of face–to–face interviews with Toyota Swedish

This pioneering lean manufacturing technique includes continuous process improvement, flexible
production with just–in–time principle, and removing waste without removing value (Angel, 2008).
So far, America has become Toyota's largest market, where Toyota is rank as one of the top–selling
brands (Toyota USA website).
CONCLUSION
Since the late 2009, the famous vehicle manufacture Toyota has suffered a severe crisis due to
unintended quality problems in its cars. This had triggered Toyota's largest officially recalls of
nearly 9 million vehicles all over the world. This crisis has threatened the company's previous
reputation of building good quality and reliable cars, as well as damaging its brand image built up
over time. The managerial decisions taken by Toyota to deal with the crisis is considered as a key
issue to retrieve the former reputation, and to recover the trust and image held by the customers.
This study aims to elaborate on the Toyota crisis in order to understand why Toyota faces this crisis
and how Toyota deals with the crisis, and investigate Swedish consumers' perceptions of Toyota
brand as the outcome of the crisis. The findings indicated that:
(1) Although there were external powers such as mass media that forced Toyota working even
harder on the crisis, it was Toyota itself that asks for most of its own misfortunes when they lost

Crisis Management: Disaster in Chile Essay
On October 13, 2010, thirty three miners of Chile were finally rescued. The men had been trapped
underground since August 5, 2010 when a rockfall caused a tunnel to collapse. Since then, the
miners had remained trapped in a collapsed gold and copper mine for two months. The miners were
hauled to the surface by a specially designed steel shaft known as "Phoenix" capsule through 2,050
feet of rock to the surface. While the mission of rescuing was completed, the Chilean government
has gained enormous applauds from the world for their meticulous and systematic crisis
management. Based on the Chile mine disaster, I would like to discuss some issues arising from the
catastrophe in which it will be the nature of the crisis, the steps of crisis ... Show more content on

As the definitions stated above, a crisis has the characteristic of being a major, unpredictable event
that cause harmful effect in which the Chile mine disaster falls under these particular definitions. On
the other hand, one shall not forget the basic causes of a crisis may be of the acts of God,
mechanical problems, human errors, and/ or management decisions or indecisions. In the case of
Chile mine disaster, one would claim that it might be the acts of God since Chile has experienced
earthquake six months before the collapsed of the mine. Others would blame that it is human error
as the miners realize poor safety standards in the mine, but they never aggressively voice up to the
management to take any action. The management indecisions shall be put on blame as they did not
have a formalized crisis management plan beforehand that caused them to panic after the tragedy.
The private held San Esteban mining company, who owned the mine, went bankrupt in September, a
month after the tragedy, leaving the Chile government alone to take responsibility on rescuing plan
right after the collapsed of the mine due to the mine company lacking of formalized crisis
management plan and experience. Moreover, the mechanical problems also contributed to such
crisis. In which, the miners were at first tried to escape all the way through the ventilation shaft
system, but the ladders required by mining safety codes were absent.

Crisis management; BP
Introduction
When an organization is in a crisis, it dominates the organization's agenda and requires immediate
action. The way the organization responds to a crisis can differ in many ways. In this essay I would
like to discuss the crisis of the British concern British Petroleum (BP). At first I would like to
provide more information about the crisis and its consequences, then I will identify the kind of crisis
we have to deal with, I will discuss the several communication strategies BP have used, I will
explain the different reactions of the public on the crisis. At last, I will give the oil concern some
advice, in case a reoccurrence takes place.

BP made mistake after mistake and it seems like Tony Hayward did not attend any media training.
It is almost impossible to deny that a lot of things went wrong in the communication concerning the
explosion of the platform and the following oil spill of the British oil concern BP. In the first
instance, BP denied there was oil leaking out of the oil well. After that BP trivialized the
consequences of the ecocatastrophe. Even the CEO Tony Hayward made some dull statements.
What did BP do wrong?
BP made a big mistake right after the explosion. They were not open and honest about the situation.
First they denied the oil spill. When it became clear that there was definitely an oil spill, BP denied
there would be any consequences for the environment and trivialized the situation later on. "The
Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean. The amount of volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into
it is tiny in relation to the total water volume" said top executive Hayward, while scientists,
biologists and satellite images proved the opposite. The photo shopped images of the crisis did little
good for the oil concern.
In the first weeks of the crisis BP used two "Nonexistence strategies". BP used the "denial strategy"
which means that they gave a simple statement denying that the crisis existed. After the denial
strategy BP used the "clarification strategy". This strategy was an

Taking a Brief Look at Crisis Management
Introduction
Managing crises is of greatest concern to practitioners as crises can be disruptive and damaging if
not tackled with effective management plans (Linsley and Slack, 2012). This brief literature
synthesis focuses on three major areas related to crisis management. It will first analyse the meaning
and mapping of crisis; next, it will consider the processes, models and complexity of crisis
management; finally, it will highlight the concept and the role of risk management.
Meaning and mapping of crisis
Several definitions for crisis are available in the literature. Carmeli and Schaubroeck (2008) describe
crisis as a moment of disruption for the organisation that insidiously destroys basic assumptions of
its members; McCollen and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dooley (1997) also recognises unlearning as one of the most important features in a model of
organisational change introducing the concept of Complex Adaptive Systems, where changes may
occur following inconsistent paths and adaptability is generated by a process of continuous learning
and unlearning.
Further to Paraskevas (2006) the process of crisis management follows four distinct stages. First, a
prodromal stage characterised by the detection of early warning signals followed by the acute stage,
when the crisis starts and damages are caused; next, the chronic stage, when the organisation tries to
recover, identifying the mistakes and learning from them; finally, the resolution stage, when all
process go back to normal and the organisation is again fully functional. However, Praskevas argues
that the process should not be perceived as linear and the complexity of its outcomes are strongly
related to the preparedness of the organisation to managing crisis. Carmeli and Schaubroeck (2008)
define crisis–prepared organisations those able to develop a system of continuous analysis of
operations and proactively monitor possible difficulties investing in prevention and risk
management.
Risk management
Risk and risk management are becoming an intrinsic part of all projects of crisis management, in
both the private and the public sector (Bhimani, 2009; McConnel and Drennan, 2006). Risk
management is becoming part of

Models and Theories Associated with Crisis Management
Crisis Management Model Successfully diffusing a crisis requires an understanding of how to
handle a crisis – before it occurs. Gonzalez–Herrero and Pratt created a four–phase crisis
management model process that includes: issues management, planning–prevention, the crisis, and
post–crisis (Gonzalez–Herrero and Pratt, 1995). Management Crisis Planning No nation looks
forward to facing a situation that causes a significant disruption to their mass especially one that
stimulates extensive media coverage. Public scrutiny can result in a negative financial, political,
legal and government impact. Crisis management planning deals with providing the best response to
a crisis. (12Manage, 2007)
360 Contingency Planning
Manisha Shekhar
Preparing contingency plans in advance, as part of a crisis management plan, is the first step to
ensuring a nation is appropriately prepared for a crisis. Crisis management teams can rehearse a
crisis plan by developing a simulated scenario to use as a drill. The plan should clearly stipulate that
the only people to speak publicly about the crisis are the designated persons, such as the nation
spokesperson or crisis team members. The first hours after a crisis breaks are the most

Personal Experience with Organizational Crises
In this paper, I present two riveting case scenarios containing the unadulterated recollection of my
direct personal experiences in crisis management. Both cases provide authoritative details of life
threatening events and the quick response by key individuals with direct corporate responsibility for
managing the pre–crisis, in–crisis and post–crisis events. Crisis management is a highly complex
field. Therefore, a plausible approach to managing crises would require simplifying the functional
relationship of key variables. The main advantage to derive from a better understanding of the
correlation among key variables would be increased individual and institutional knowledge. I also ...

And, crisis management is the process of determining and influencing crisis points in a positive
direction. The opposite would be termed 'crisis mismanagement'.
The traditional view of a crisis is that it is a turning point. The term was originally used in the field
of medicine (disease control). Therefore, it is a borrowed term with its genesis in the early 15th
century, from a Latinized form of Greek krisis "turning point in a disease" (Online Etymology
Dictionary, n.d.). If a crisis cannot be defined in time (World Health Organization, n.d.) , then it is an
event or a point in time of 0 days duration. A milestone is defined as a significant event of no
duration (Project Management Institute, 2012). Therefore, a crisis and a milestone share similar
properties with respect to their time dimension.
The key difference between an emergency and a disaster lies in the resourcefulness of the
organization or state and the need for external intervention. Since, a crisis moment is difficult to
identify by focusing on the occurrence of the point in time; we should then divert our attention to
significant shifts in resource needs as a basis for determining crisis points.

The Problem Of Crisis Communication Management
Crisis Communication Management
The communication given when there is a crisis can make or break an organization and there
spokesperson career, and result in a loss of trust for the organization.
I think that information that any type of information that pertains to "allocation of blame;
speculation as to the cause of the incident; anything off the record; money estimates of damage; and
insurance coverage" ("Crisis Communication Management", n.d.), should always be controlled,
because until they have assets all the information possible, they should do all they can to protect the
information given to the community. Another reason to control communication and information is if
it will cause a community or nationwide panic, which can be ... Show more content on

The media is always the one who will ask whom, when, where, and why questions. And the crisis
team will be the ones that will answer those questions. They will be prepared for the crisis before the
crisis happens so that during a crisis/emergency they can swiftly go into action, and will always be
able to access the highest levels of the administration.
How control over crisis information gives power to a person
We all know that when a crisis happens that an organization reputation is always online, so
maintaining control over information as much as possible until it can be verified is very important.
Thereby, internal communication is very critical to maintain and establish trust and it especially
important in emergencies/crisis where the stakeholders might be vulnerable to reputation fallout.
Because when they lack Intel or just do not understanding what the nature or the extent of the crisis
it can create intense fear or illogical behavior towards the organization.
Therefore, "taking strong communication measures to strengthen the stakeholders, worker, or public
morale" (Chong, 2006), by using the Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT). Why?
Because it will allow us to assess the crisis situation so that we can instructs them what they should

Four Simulations On The Crisis Management Process
During my previous four weeks of class, I have had the opportunity to experience the crisis
management process throughout four simulations which explored different contexts and situations of
an unfolding crisis. At its core, crisis management takes on the form of a four–step process:
prevention, preparation, response, and recovery. A process, which in its entirety, relies upon notions
of command, control, communication, and intelligence (t'Hart 37). In particular, simulations in
intelligence analysis, crisis leadership, and crisis communication each focused and delved into a
specific role of the crisis management process and required an appropriate application of leadership,
communication, and analytic skill.
However, this notion of crisis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
John F. Kennedy once said "The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word 'crisis.' One brush
stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger––but recognize
the opportunity." In reflection, the true nature of crisis management emerges. Too often, the modern
world focuses on the sensationalization of violence, death, and crises without considering any good
that can emerge. Crises, and effective management, often lead to policy, social, and institutional
changes which make society better off than it was before. While all five dimensions of t'Hart's
model maintain a necessity for symbolic action within crisis management theory, clearly opportunity
has consequences which will be long–term and widespread. Therefore, I conclude that the
fulfillment of t'Hart's model serves as an infinite window of hope – where crisis managers, and
future simulation participants, can strive to not only help people survive, but

Crisis Management Issues Of Toyota
As we all know Toyota is one of the top automotive companies. This company was started in 1933
and now they are producing over 4 million automotive per year. Most importantly now they have
moved to the machinery, electronics, finance and other industries.
First month of 2010, Toyota was started to recall millions of cars after issues with braking, floor
mats and acceleration pedals in its vehicles. The recall was activated by the report of a burning crash
in California, where the accelerator of a Lexus sedan got trapped, resulting in the driver's death.
That situation even led Toyota to stop sales and production of eight of its most popular models like
Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla. In January 2010, Toyota had proclaimed recalls of almost 5.2
million vehicles for the pedal entrapment/floor mat problem, and an extra 2.3 million vehicles for
the accelerator pedal problem. Around 1.7 million vehicles are affected both. World famous Lexus
and Pontiac models were also faced to these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

capitalizing on the chances embedded in the crisis. The company has made some important efforts,

find the quality issues, and quickly moving to address consumer concerns. Toyota went into crisis
management mode and proclaimed a repair for the accelerator issue. The company has also started
an advertising campaign to address the crisis in a directly by highlighting the values of quality and
consumer security. Social media has been a big part of Toyota's path to rescue and using online
potential clients has helped Toyota restore its good name. As part of its problem management
process, Toyota placed advertisements in print and television media, involved executives and used

A WORD FROM THE CHAIR
The Public Service of Canada evolves in a world where risks have become increasingly complex
and serious, and this in turn has greatly increased the likelihood of crises or emergencies. The events
linked to the attacks of September 11, 2001 and, more recently, to the Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS) and the Mad Cow Disease are just a few examples that highlight the important
role the Government of Canada needs to play in managing crises and emergencies. In the big
picture, crises and emergencies are inevitable and it is only a question of time before one or the
other occurs. Federal

The Role Of Media Management On Crisis Communication
The importance of media management in crisis communication
Introduction
Crisis according to Laura (2013, p. 51), can be defined as any situation that threatens harms or cause
panic among people. Crisis may occur due to accidents, war, and flood or fire attack. During this
period, the public, who may be affected by the crisis because they are found in the situation or their
next of kin are involved in it, rely on a lot of information that is relayed by the media. Because of
this, the media must be careful of what they report. The information that the media convey to the
public according to Laura (2013, p. 50) may cool the situation, and reduce the tension that has been
built by the parties concerned. However, if they are not mindful of ... Show more content on

also researched on how the media should play this role. For instance, Taffel, A., in the year 2007 did
research on how to enhance Public Relations During the crisis (Taffel 2011, p. 112). In his research,
Taffel observed that, it is necessary to monitor the information that is relied on the public so that, the
image of the agency that is in crisis is not tarnished. In his research, Taffel had suggested that the
organization must balance the information that o is relayed the public (Taffel 2011, p. 112). He
observes that, it is necessary to balance between truths and lies so that the level of tension is
reduced. In the research, taffel adds that, if the media is allowed to report on everything, they may
kill the reputation that the company has.
In 2011, Yan, J., Brooke, F. L and Lucinda, L. A. did a research on the role of the social media in
effective crisis management. The research had been prompted by the manner in which a lot of
propaganda was spread via the social media during the Arab spring (Yan, Brookes and Lucinder
2011, p.3). In the paper, the researchers observe that, crisis can be best managed by the medal if they
can control the information that they give to the public. The researchers observe that, if the media
gives information that is contradicting, the public may become more anxious.

Cmt Crisis Management
In order to improve the safety of the workplace in the event of an "active shooter" organizational
learning must first take place. The first stage needed to be studied is landscape survey, which
focuses on crisis threats (Crandall, Parnell & Spillan, 2013). I want my crisis management team
(CMT), as well as the rest of my coworkers, to be able to detect any warning signs. Are they worried
about a fellow worker's mental health? Have they noticed any suspicious activity or odd behavior
within or around the workplace? (Crandall et al., 2013). Has a customer made any threats against the
company? If so, everyone needs to know how to report these things and who to report them to. I
would like to designate one member of the CMT for employees to report warning signs to. This

To improve safety we will need to look to see if any changes need to be made with our CMT, crisis
management plan, or training requirements (Crandall et al., 2013). Do we need to appoint more
members to our CMT in the event of an "active shooter," or maybe a new employee has a military or
law enforcement background that could be useful in managing this type of crisis? Using a cell phone
during this crisis is not safe, so an alternate way of contacting the CMT and communicating will
need to be developed (Crandall et al., 2013). Being familiar with planned strategies can help
improve safety during crisis.
Once the crisis has begun, the third stage, crisis management goes into effect. It is essential to teach
this stage so that a proper strategy can be implemented and effective communication can be
maintained throughout the situation (Crandall et al., 2013). Teamwork and cooperation is also

Crisis Management Planning
Sport is believed to be a unique "product", since the majority of its images and messages get
conveyed via the coverage by the media rather than through sales advertising. While this coverage is
typically positive, the interest of the media gets more difficult as high profile scandals take place,
which can be rather damaging. Therefore, a relevant public relations crisis response plan needs to be
developed.
A brief overview of the current writings on the issue exposes the need of crisis management
planning to be "quick, be consistent, and be open" (Coombs, 2006, p. 172). First of all, a consistent
message should be delivered by either one or more spokespersons, so that the information vacuum
does not get filled with incorrect information. This step, done with maximum speed, will help to
support believability (Coombs, 2006). Further, the emphasis should be on truthfulness as well as
openness, especially in cases when an organization has erred. For example, Fearn–Banks (1996)
argues that if some organization has erred, it had better revealed its mistakes immediately,
apologize, and also make necessary amends. Fearn–Banks explains this by the fact that cover–ups
will only lead to persistence of the crisis (Fearn–Banks, 1996, p. 65).
This view is supported by a public relations expert Devon Blaine, who says that "openness with the
press and honesty are the best practices". It to apply this view to the situation of sports public

Conflict in Crisis Management
Compare and contrast productive (poiesis) and practical (praxis) activity and their importance to
crisis management.
Poiesis refers to the productive act of actually doing something while praxis refers to training. Praxis
can consist of various exercises or learning theoretical knowledge. Praxis is important because it can
better prepare an individual to face challenges; especially in regard to a crisis. However, theoretical
knowledge and training can only take someone so far. Gaining real world experience, the realm of
poiesis, is incredibly valuable as well. Having experienced a crisis can better prepare someone by
equipping them with the understanding of what it is like to be in a crisis situation.
How do differing paradigms relate to conflict in crisis management?
Differing paradigms have been proposed in regards to conflict in crisis management because the
field is dynamic and constantly evolving in response to technological, cultural, social, and many
other factors (Kemp, 2010). Furthermore, this question can be viewed from different angles and for
different types of events. For example, a common question in the event of a man made crisis event,
such as terrorism, is why people would want to become terrorists in the first place (Silke, 2003).
Researching the psychological profiles can offer certain insights however this is only one
perspective among many competing paradigms.

Sandoval Junior et al provide a glimpse into the models currently being used to study complex
systems whose correlation is unknown in an attempt to overcome some of the limitations addressed
above. Random matrix theory is one of those approaches that were successfully tested. This
approach contrast the values of a correlation matrix obtained from a real system to those obtained
from a pure random matrix. More recently, random matrix theory with time lags has been used to
compute time series correlations among world stock indices with success. However, these
techniques require much more sophisticated risk management models, and may be beyond the
means for large numbers of market participants.
Others like Loisel have publicly argued against the increasing sophistication of correlation models,
adding that better risk management standards do not mean replacing a simple model with a
"Gaussian copula with a mixture of Student copulas." Instead, Loisel argues the risk management
professionals need to pay more attention to studying non–stationary risk processes and dynamic
correlations with the aim of better understanding the sources of risk, rather than overcompensating
with model complexity.

System upgrade is a process that organizations have to go through every once in a while. System
upgrade is a situation where an organization usually improves the types of systems, such as
computer software, that it uses for their normal operations. In the current world, different forms of
technologies are coming up every day (Beynon, 2009). These types of technologies are quite
important for the success of any business. In order to remain successful within the current markets,
it is important for an organization to remain competitive through the process of updating its system
every once in a while. This will ensure that the organization is competent at all times and remains
successful in its operation. Further, it may have advantages over its competitors, which improves its
general operations within its operating markets. System upgrade is quite advantageous to an
organization within its working environment and industry.
Based on system upgrade, I witnessed an organization that lost a lot of money through failed

operations after the installation process. Due to its abilities of keeping up with the technological

Ethical Considerations For A Crisis Management Plan
In order for a crisis management plan to be carried out, a crisis management team will be needed to
help the person dealing with a crisis situation. A crisis management team is a team of people that
have the knowledge and skills on how to respond and deal with a crisis situation. The crisis
management team may compromise of individuals such as teachers, social workers, police officers,
nurses, paramedics, psychologists, and school principals. School counselors should also be

Also, another ethical consideration for school counselors would be if the student is a danger to
themselves or another student, then it's important to disclose that information along with getting
their parents involved. The legal considerations that must be applied when responding to a student
crisis is that school counselors have a duty to protect students when they're going through a crisis.
Going back to the crisis of a student being a danger to another student, school counselors have the
legal duty to protect that other student as well as reporting to the authorities (Kanel, 2015). It's
important that school counselors know how to collaborate before, during, and after a crisis. Before a
crisis, the school counselor can collaborate with teachers and other school staff members by training
them and coming up with ways on how to help students during a crisis situation. During a crisis, the
school counselor will show other staff members how to comfort students during their time of need in
the crisis situation. After a crisis, the school counselor will help staff members by showing them
how to help students recover from a crisis as well as providing them resources if they need any more
additional help. The way that collaboration assist in a crisis response is that school counselors and
staff members come together to work as a team help students heal through a crisis situation (Kelley,
2015). As for a post–crisis response, School counselors and staff members must prepare to come up
with a plan along with intervention strategies and resources in order to help students recover
successfully from a crisis situation. There are many techniques for school counselors to take into
consideration that would be helpful for students who experience a traumatic event such as

reptiles, mammals and other pets and pet related inventory. In the month of January 2016, graphic
news articles and videos were headlined on global television and shared across social media

images of animals being mistreated and frozen alive grabbed attention of stakeholders and investors

management steps, issues management process, effects of being socially responsible and how to
implement an effective strategy to resolve crisis and prevent future occurrences. This paper will
address Petco's approach to crisis management and how the organization handled a reputational

Crisis management encompasses responding to a negative event that has occurred unexpectedly. In
this regard, crisis management requires decisions to be made in a relatively short time frame. In
general, there are three elements of a crisis including a threat, surprise and a short time frame for
decision making. Dealing with a crisis may be challenging and organizations are required to have a
crisis management plan to enable them deal with the effects that unexpected negative events or

Paren (2008) gives an example of Virginia Tech shooting where by social media users provided a list
of the victims even before an official list could be released. During a crisis, social media plays an
important role in disseminating information where information breakers inform the public and the
stakeholders of an event of interest. For example, a flooding may swipe away a bridge and an
information breaker could use social media to inform other motorists of the crisis. It is however
worth noting that social media as with other forms of communication has been used to spread
rumors in times of crisis and it is important for the crisis management team to closely monitor social
media and squash any rumors (TFCC, 2013).
Controlling Rumors
One of the biggest challenges that an organization can face in times of crisis is controlling rumors.
In essence, rumors tend to feed other rumors and if such rumors reach the media, they become
formalized as reality. In emergency situations, rumors arise mostly due to uncertainty and lack of
information by which the public and stakeholders can understand the crisis. Where there lacks
enough information, people attempts to create meaning by patching the little information there is the
result of which is a rumor.
To avoid rumors, a crisis management team needs to recognize the importance of clear and

Inevitably, crisis will surface bringing with it turmoil and adverse experiences. Crisis
communication is an endeavor by health care professionals to provide information that enable
clients and stakeholders to make the best achievable decisions during an emergency about their
welfare inside a narrow time margin. Authors Flannery and Everly (2000) state, "A crisis occurs
when a stressful life event overwhelms an individual's ability to cope effectively in the face of a
perceived challenge or threat" (p.119). Often, in times of disaster, the effectiveness of being a sender
of communication or its receiver is affected due to elevated levels of stress related to a stressor that
threatens a person's personal security or self–integrity (Arnold & Boggs, 2011) therefore
defeating the individual's ability to perform and function normally. An individual may have feelings
of powerlessness, of being unable to escape the devastation and horror that surround them. With the
impact of crisis on people's psyche and well–being, many will experience difficulties envisioning

Crisis Management and Prevention Process
Introduction
This paper will extensively cover the crisis prevention process. By citing various examples of crises
that have occurred in the past, the crisis prevention process will be made more vivid. Additionally,
this article will outline a variety of methodologies to be followed in the event of a crisis. It will also
give personal opinions on the case of crisis prevention and farther explain the role of various
societal authorities in crisis escalation. Finally, it will give substantial recommendation on the issue
of crisis prevention.
Crisis management, by definition, is the management of a situational occurrence that involves
specific roles, processes and responsibilities that will efficiently handle the situation. Crisis
management responses involve a variety of areas notably; crisis assessment, crisis prevention, crisis
handling and termination. Proper understanding of the processes will result to efficient mitigation of
crises. It is important to note that any organization or society has to be prepared for crises and
respond rapidly in the event of one (Booth 56).

Crisis Management- a Strategic Leadership Approach
Crisis management – a strategic leadership approach
Introduction
The past decade has been wrought with crises on both a domestic and international scale. It has been
marked by a glut of organizational crises including natural disasters, technology disruption, and acts
of terrorism, scandals, and financial mismanagement.
Yet, many leaders are ill–prepared for the important role they may need to play in leading an
organization through a crisis. At the beginning of the decade people all over the world scrambled to
tackle the potential technological disruption of the Y2K bug which was one of the utmost crises.
Then in 2001 the US was thrown off balance by the terrorist attack on September 11, which led to a

Smoldering–like crisis situations typically result from the simple day to day work performed in an
organization and often take the form of management mistakes that have built up over a period of
time.
Phases of crisis Management:
Phase 1: Signal Detection
While these are less evident in many crisis that occur suddenly and without warning (e.g., natural
disaster), most other types of crisis have a number of early warning signs that lead an enlightened
manager to know something is wrong. A slowly building increase in customer complaints or defect
rates, for example, can be a sign of trouble in product quality.
Phase 2: Preparation/Prevention
The preparation and prevention phase is one in which managers engage in activities to plan for or
avert a crisis. These activities may include developing crisis policies and procedures, identifying a
crisis response team, performing crisis drills, and more. As the preparation and prevention stage of
crisis management should not imply that the goal for managers is to prevent all crises, but rather
engage in realistic planning in order to better position the organization to prevent some crises and to
manage those that are unavoidable.
Phase 3: Containment/Damage
The goal of the containment/damage control phase is to limit the reputation, financial, and other
threats to firm survival in light of the crisis. This is achieved through activities that limit the

Implementing A Crisis Management Plan
Businesses should have a crisis management plan to deal with any unexpected issues that may arise
during the course of the day to day operations. Implementing a crisis management plan will help a
company to be prepared for any situation that may occur. Crisis management is defined as "the
process of handling a high–impact event characterized by ambiguity and the need for swift action"
(Thorne, O. Ferrell, & L. Ferrell, 2011, p. 66). There is a four stage process that a crisis will follow
from the time the issue occurs until the resolution of the issue. Many businesses that are not
prepared for an unexpected crisis are unable to handle the situation correctly and as a result their
reputation is damaged because of it. Coca–Cola is a company that has suffered from many crises and
because of their poor crisis management the company is still trying to rebuild their image in the eyes
of the consumer. Coca–Cola suffered a major crisis in June 1999 when children in Belgium became
sick after consuming Coke products. The Coca–Cola Company was unable to handle this crisis
adequately and because they were unprepared to handle this issue they lost consumer trust and much
of the European market. Their slow response time gave people little hope that they were in control
and taking care of the problem. The Belgium government had to step in and recall all Coke products,
which eventually led to the Netherlands and Luxembourg following suit. If Coca–Cola would have

Aspects of Crisis Management: An Examination
Aspects of Crisis Management: An Examination As we've seen throughout the history of
humankind, crisis situations and other such disasters have long been a part of the human story and
the human experience. One of the most defining incidences which helped to fine–tune some of the
more pervasive strategies of the field and the techniques of professionals in crisis management was
the terrorist attack during the Munich Olympics in 1972. During this time certain trends were in use
and seen as priorities when attempting to mitigate the situation. These were things like containing
and negotiating with the hostage taker in such an incident, understanding the hostage takers
motivation, and the necessity of slowing down a given incidence so that the negotiator and tactical
team have more time to work (McMains& Mullins, 2010). However, so much of the success of
managing a given incidence revolves around the fact that the tactical team and the negotiating team
need to work in utter harmony, providing one another with strong levels of consistent support. In
addition to this amount of mutual support, there also needs to be a serious focus within each team, as
each has their own needs and methods. The tactical team provides a tremendous amount of
fundamental groundwork so that the negotiating team can do their job. "They block and prevent

communications "best practices" and can be divided into three phrases: (1) pre–crisis, (2) crisis

Pre–crisis Best Practices
The first set of crisis communication best practices, pre–crisis, focuses on prevention–the act of
"seeking to reduce known risks that could lead to a crisis"–and preparation–the act of creating
training, and testing a crisis management plan and crisis management team (Coombs, 2007). Crisis
management plans (CMP) are reference tools (i.e. key contacts information, crisis step reminders,
forms, etc.) that save crisis management teams (CMT)–pre–selected members of an organization–
time during a crisis. Once created, CMPs enable an organization to react quicker and more
efficiently to a crisis. Common members of an organization's CMT include, but are not limited to:
an organization's CEO, Chief of Public Relations, Vice President, Social Media Manager, legal
counsel and Senior Manager in charge of the area involved in the crisis. Collectively, these members
will work together to enact the organization's crisis management plan "in order to facilitate an
effective organizational response" (Coombs, 2007a). The members will be charged with gathering

strategies. The first of these being pumping of groundwater, although an effective solution in the
short term (offsetting almost 70% of the water shortage and reducing crop fallow and job losses),
these reserves will become ever more expensive to extract and will eventually run out. Under
irrigating land, idling of land and shifting of crops go together as strategies that will save the
proprietor water but will also decrease output and consequently operating profits. Another is the use
of water conservation technologies such as shade balls or permeable tarmac, aligning with Boserup's
1965 theory that 'Necessity is the mother of all invention' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

An article written by Ostrander (2015) gives an interesting take on longer term and more sustainable
strategies for L.A in response to the Californian drought, all of which revolve around changing the
way the city deals with its water. The article states that the concreting of channels and river beds and
an increase in urban impermeable surfaces have meant that less water can filter into the ground,
rather it either floods or drains straight into the ocean. In changing the rhetoric of storm water being
a nuisance and restoring waterways to allow them to hold, slow and filter water would fix many
problems at once. Combining this with technology such as permeable tarmac would allow
groundwater to replenish faster when the rains arrive. Although these solutions are not cheap, they
are said to be far cheaper than desalinization. In addition, It is estimated that through strategies such
as these, L.A could reduce its water import from 85% to just over half.
An article by Hudson (2015) gives recommendations for combatting drought with far longer term
orientation, all of which, similar to Ostrander, revolve around the management of water. The article
argues that restricting people s water use is a temporary measure. In the long term climate change
and supply will dictate that California needs to change the way it manages water, particularly

The Crisis Management Lesson From Toyota And Gm
The Crisis Management Lesson from Toyota and GM: "It's Our Problem the Moment We Hear
About It"
Delay in confronting crises is deadly. Corporate leaders must have processes for learning of
important safety issues. Then they must seize control immediately and lead a systematic response.
Crisis management is the ultimate stress test for the CEO and other top leaders of companies. The
mantra for all leaders in crisis management must be: "It is our problem the moment we hear about it.
We will be judged from that instant forward for everything we do–and don't do."
These are key lessons for leaders in all types of businesses from the front page stories about Toyota's
and GM's separate, lengthy delays in responding promptly and fully to reports of deadly accidents
possibly linked to product defects.
The news focus has been on regulatory investigations and enforcement relating to each company,
but the ultimate question is why the company leaders didn't forcefully address the possible defect
issues when deaths started to occur.
On the recent regulatory front:
Toyota just agreed to pay $1.2 billion in a deferred prosecution agreement with DOJ and accept a
safety monitor for failing to disclose to regulators–and indeed misleading them–about accelerators
that became stuck on certain types of floor mats or because of certain elements in the accelerator
itself. The problem of uncontrolled speeding and deadly crashes began to appear in 2007, but it took
four years, and deceptive

The essential cause of subprime lending problem and the payment crisis is the decline of the housing price which leaded to the solvency of the subprime loans borrowers decline. For this reason, the deep problem behind the Subprime mortgage crisis is the housing market correction in the US. The Federal Reserve used the loose monetary policy to cut interest rate. The strong growth in the global economy and the pursuits of high returns, lead to the preference for risk between the global investors increased. As the easy access to loans, it was contributed to the growth of the housing market. In the environment of house prices rose and low interest rate, the weakly risk awareness of both lenders and borrowers were increasing, which leaded to the rapid growth of subprime mortgages in the US. By the reason that the US interest rate hiked, the real estate prices began to fall at 2006. (Simkovic, n.d.) The delinquency rate of mortgage increased significantly, the number of people who were unable to pay off the house is increased. Once the mortgage is cleared, it is resulting in credit losses eventually. Different from all the past real estate market fluctuation, this Subprime mortgage crisis caused the re–pricing of entire stock market, especially the derivative products, and this brought great uncertainty to the subprime market. It has proved to be a very effective way of saving lives in a case of a disaster or crisis event happening in their respective accommodation areas.(Ritchie, 2008). Many tourists on holidays have proved that the use of safety material put in place by hotels has been effective. Again with the example of Thailand, most hotels will warn guests by supplying notices in rooms advising not to drink tap water at any costs and provide bottled water for guests to prevent them from becoming sick. Practices such as this have reduced various risks to tourist health like serious illness in a foreign country. It has additionally helped in a reduction in the consumption of unsafe foods and drinks which could be detrimental to their health (Ritchie, 2008). • 26. Crisis Management: Disaster in Chile Essay On October 13, 2010, thirty three miners of Chile were finally rescued. The men had been trapped underground since August 5, 2010 when a rockfall caused a tunnel to collapse. Since then, the miners had remained trapped in a collapsed gold and copper mine for two months. The miners were hauled to the surface by a specially designed steel shaft known as "Phoenix" capsule through 2,050 feet of rock to the surface. While the mission of rescuing was completed, the Chilean government has gained enormous applauds from the world for their meticulous and systematic crisis management. Based on the Chile mine disaster, I would like to discuss some issues arising from the catastrophe in which it will be the nature of the crisis, the steps of crisis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the definitions stated above, a crisis has the characteristic of being a major, unpredictable event that cause harmful effect in which the Chile mine disaster falls under these particular definitions. On the other hand, one shall not forget the basic causes of a crisis may be of the acts of God, mechanical problems, human errors, and/ or management decisions or indecisions. In the case of Chile mine disaster, one would claim that it might be the acts of God since Chile has experienced earthquake six months before the collapsed of the mine. Others would blame that it is human error as the miners realize poor safety standards in the mine, but they never aggressively voice up to the management to take any action. The management indecisions shall be put on blame as they did not have a formalized crisis management plan beforehand that caused them to panic after the tragedy. The private held San Esteban mining company, who owned the mine, went bankrupt in September, a month after the tragedy, leaving the Chile government alone to take responsibility on rescuing plan right after the collapsed of the mine due to the mine company lacking of formalized crisis management plan and experience. Moreover, the mechanical problems also contributed to such crisis. In which, the miners were at first tried to escape all the way through the ventilation shaft system, but the ladders required by mining safety codes were absent. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The way the organization responds to a crisis can differ in many ways. In this essay I would like to discuss the crisis of the British concern British Petroleum (BP). At first I would like to provide more information about the crisis and its consequences, then I will identify the kind of crisis we have to deal with, I will discuss the several communication strategies BP have used, I will explain the different reactions of the public on the crisis. At last, I will give the oil concern some advice, in case a reoccurrence takes place. The BP oil spill The BP oil spill was a big natural disaster in the Gulf of Mexico ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... BP made mistake after mistake and it seems like Tony Hayward did not attend any media training. It is almost impossible to deny that a lot of things went wrong in the communication concerning the explosion of the platform and the following oil spill of the British oil concern BP. In the first instance, BP denied there was oil leaking out of the oil well. After that BP trivialized the consequences of the ecocatastrophe. Even the CEO Tony Hayward made some dull statements. What did BP do wrong? BP made a big mistake right after the explosion. They were not open and honest about the situation. First they denied the oil spill. When it became clear that there was definitely an oil spill, BP denied there would be any consequences for the environment and trivialized the situation later on. "The Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean. The amount of volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the total water volume" said top executive Hayward, while scientists, biologists and satellite images proved the opposite. The photo shopped images of the crisis did little good for the oil concern. In the first weeks of the crisis BP used two "Nonexistence strategies". BP used the "denial strategy" which means that they gave a simple statement denying that the crisis existed. After the denial strategy BP used the "clarification strategy". This strategy was an ... • 34. Taking a Brief Look at Crisis Management Introduction Managing crises is of greatest concern to practitioners as crises can be disruptive and damaging if not tackled with effective management plans (Linsley and Slack, 2012). This brief literature synthesis focuses on three major areas related to crisis management. It will first analyse the meaning and mapping of crisis; next, it will consider the processes, models and complexity of crisis management; finally, it will highlight the concept and the role of risk management. Meaning and mapping of crisis Several definitions for crisis are available in the literature. Carmeli and Schaubroeck (2008) describe crisis as a moment of disruption for the organisation that insidiously destroys basic assumptions of its members; McCollen and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dooley (1997) also recognises unlearning as one of the most important features in a model of organisational change introducing the concept of Complex Adaptive Systems, where changes may occur following inconsistent paths and adaptability is generated by a process of continuous learning and unlearning. Further to Paraskevas (2006) the process of crisis management follows four distinct stages. First, a prodromal stage characterised by the detection of early warning signals followed by the acute stage, when the crisis starts and damages are caused; next, the chronic stage, when the organisation tries to recover, identifying the mistakes and learning from them; finally, the resolution stage, when all process go back to normal and the organisation is again fully functional. However, Praskevas argues that the process should not be perceived as linear and the complexity of its outcomes are strongly related to the preparedness of the organisation to managing crisis. Carmeli and Schaubroeck (2008) define crisis–prepared organisations those able to develop a system of continuous analysis of operations and proactively monitor possible difficulties investing in prevention and risk management. Risk management Risk and risk management are becoming an intrinsic part of all projects of crisis management, in both the private and the public sector (Bhimani, 2009; McConnel and Drennan, 2006). Both cases provide authoritative details of life threatening events and the quick response by key individuals with direct corporate responsibility for managing the pre–crisis, in–crisis and post–crisis events. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And, crisis management is the process of determining and influencing crisis points in a positive direction. The opposite would be termed 'crisis mismanagement'. The traditional view of a crisis is that it is a turning point. The term was originally used in the field of medicine (disease control). Therefore, it is a borrowed term with its genesis in the early 15th century, from a Latinized form of Greek krisis "turning point in a disease" (Online Etymology Dictionary, n.d.). If a crisis cannot be defined in time (World Health Organization, n.d.) , then it is an event or a point in time of 0 days duration. A milestone is defined as a significant event of no duration (Project Management Institute, 2012). Therefore, a crisis and a milestone share similar properties with respect to their time dimension. The key difference between an emergency and a disaster lies in the resourcefulness of the organization or state and the need for external intervention. Since, a crisis moment is difficult to identify by focusing on the occurrence of the point in time; we should then divert our attention to significant shifts in resource needs as a basis for determining crisis points. How control over crisis information gives power to a person We all know that when a crisis happens that an organization reputation is always online, so maintaining control over information as much as possible until it can be verified is very important. Thereby, internal communication is very critical to maintain and establish trust and it especially important in emergencies/crisis where the stakeholders might be vulnerable to reputation fallout. Four Simulations On The Crisis Management Process During my previous four weeks of class, I have had the opportunity to experience the crisis management process throughout four simulations which explored different contexts and situations of an unfolding crisis. At its core, crisis management takes on the form of a four–step process: prevention, preparation, response, and recovery. A process, which in its entirety, relies upon notions of command, control, communication, and intelligence (t'Hart 37). In particular, simulations in intelligence analysis, crisis leadership, and crisis communication each focused and delved into a specific role of the crisis management process and required an appropriate application of leadership, communication, and analytic skill. However, this notion of crisis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John F. Kennedy once said "The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word 'crisis.' One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger––but recognize the opportunity." In reflection, the true nature of crisis management emerges. Too often, the modern world focuses on the sensationalization of violence, death, and crises without considering any good that can emerge. Crises, and effective management, often lead to policy, social, and institutional changes which make society better off than it was before. While all five dimensions of t'Hart's model maintain a necessity for symbolic action within crisis management theory, clearly opportunity has consequences which will be long–term and widespread. Therefore, I conclude that the fulfillment of t'Hart's model serves as an infinite window of hope – where crisis managers, and future simulation participants, can strive to not only help people survive, but ... The Role Of Media Management On Crisis Communication The importance of media management in crisis communication Introduction Crisis according to Laura (2013, p. 51), can be defined as any situation that threatens harms or cause panic among people. Crisis may occur due to accidents, war, and flood or fire attack. During this period, the public, who may be affected by the crisis because they are found in the situation or their next of kin are involved in it, rely on a lot of information that is relayed by the media. Because of this, the media must be careful of what they report. In his research, Taffel observed that, it is necessary to monitor the information that is relied on the public so that, the image of the agency that is in crisis is not tarnished. In his research, Taffel had suggested that the organization must balance the information that o is relayed the public (Taffel 2011, p. 112). In the research, taffel adds that, if the media is allowed to report on everything, they may kill the reputation that the company has. In 2011, Yan, J., Brooke, F. L and Lucinda, L. • 93. Crisis Management Planning Sport is believed to be a unique "product", since the majority of its images and messages get conveyed via the coverage by the media rather than through sales advertising. While this coverage is typically positive, the interest of the media gets more difficult as high profile scandals take place, which can be rather damaging. Therefore, a relevant public relations crisis response plan needs to be developed. A brief overview of the current writings on the issue exposes the need of crisis management planning to be "quick, be consistent, and be open" (Coombs, 2006, p. 172). First of all, a consistent message should be delivered by either one or more spokespersons, so that the information vacuum does not get filled with incorrect information. This step, done with maximum speed, will help to support believability (Coombs, 2006). Further, the emphasis should be on truthfulness as well as openness, especially in cases when an organization has erred. For example, Fearn–Banks (1996) argues that if some organization has erred, it had better revealed its mistakes immediately, apologize, and also make necessary amends. Fearn–Banks explains this by the fact that cover–ups will only lead to persistence of the crisis (Fearn–Banks, 1996, p. 65). • 97. Conflict in Crisis Management Compare and contrast productive (poiesis) and practical (praxis) activity and their importance to crisis management. Poiesis refers to the productive act of actually doing something while praxis refers to training. Praxis can consist of various exercises or learning theoretical knowledge. Praxis is important because it can better prepare an individual to face challenges; especially in regard to a crisis. However, theoretical knowledge and training can only take someone so far. Gaining real world experience, the realm of poiesis, is incredibly valuable as well. Having experienced a crisis can better prepare someone by equipping them with the understanding of what it is like to be in a crisis situation. How do differing paradigms relate to conflict in crisis management? Differing paradigms have been proposed in regards to conflict in crisis management because the field is dynamic and constantly evolving in response to technological, cultural, social, and many other factors (Kemp, 2010). Furthermore, this question can be viewed from different angles and for different types of events. For example, a common question in the event of a man made crisis event, such as terrorism, is why people would want to become terrorists in the first place (Silke, 2003). Researching the psychological profiles can offer certain insights however this is only one perspective among many competing paradigms. • 101. Risk Management As A Crisis This essay will explore three areas of risk management which have been criticised in recent years due to their earlier neglect. Following the description of the problem and the current status of risk management research in each given area, a brief conclusion is provided. The conclusions in this essay aim to address the issues in risk management more generally by building on the status of risk management studies. Weakness 1: Reliance on Static Correlation Assumptions in Dynamic World It has been observed that correlations between asset prices through periods of market uncertainty differ markedly from those seen in quieter periods. Literature on the subject generally coincides in that such differences in correlations are a result of either ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sandoval Junior et al provide a glimpse into the models currently being used to study complex systems whose correlation is unknown in an attempt to overcome some of the limitations addressed above. Random matrix theory is one of those approaches that were successfully tested. This approach contrast the values of a correlation matrix obtained from a real system to those obtained from a pure random matrix. More recently, random matrix theory with time lags has been used to compute time series correlations among world stock indices with success. However, these techniques require much more sophisticated risk management models, and may be beyond the means for large numbers of market participants. Others like Loisel have publicly argued against the increasing sophistication of correlation models, adding that better risk management standards do not mean replacing a simple model with a "Gaussian copula with a mixture of Student copulas." Instead, Loisel argues the risk management professionals need to pay more attention to studying non–stationary risk processes and dynamic correlations with the aim of better understanding the sources of risk, rather than overcompensating with model complexity. Conclusion on Use of Common Sense Building on Loisel, perhaps the biggest shortcoming in risk management strategies is the overreliance on complex models ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Crisis Leadership And Risk Management Report Crisis Leadership or Risk Management George Waller Argosy University BUS320 A04 12 April 2015 Assignment 2: LASA 1–Crisis Leadership or Risk Management Report System upgrade is a process that organizations have to go through every once in a while. System upgrade is a situation where an organization usually improves the types of systems, such as computer software, that it uses for their normal operations. In the current world, different forms of technologies are coming up every day (Beynon, 2009). These types of technologies are quite important for the success of any business. In order to remain successful within the current markets, it is important for an organization to remain competitive through the process of updating its system every once in a while. This will ensure that the organization is competent at all times and remains successful in its operation. Further, it may have advantages over its competitors, which improves its general operations within its operating markets. Also, another ethical consideration for school counselors would be if the student is a danger to themselves or another student, then it's important to disclose that information along with getting their parents involved. The legal considerations that must be applied when responding to a student crisis is that school counselors have a duty to protect students when they're going through a crisis. Going back to the crisis of a student being a danger to another student, school counselors have the legal duty to protect that other student as well as reporting to the authorities (Kanel, 2015). It's important that school counselors know how to collaborate before, during, and after a crisis. Before a crisis, the school counselor can collaborate with teachers and other school staff members by training them and coming up with ways on how to help students during a crisis situation. During a crisis, the school counselor will show other staff members how to comfort students during their time of need in the crisis situation. After a crisis, the school counselor will help staff members by showing them how to help students recover from a crisis as well as providing them resources if they need any more additional help. The way that collaboration assist in a crisis response is that school counselors and staff members come together to work as a team help students heal through a crisis situation (Kelley, 2015). As for a post–crisis response, School counselors and staff members must prepare to come up with a plan along with intervention strategies and resources in order to help students recover successfully from a crisis situation. Dealing with a crisis may be challenging and organizations are required to have a crisis management plan to enable them deal with the effects that unexpected negative events or situations may create. During a crisis, social media plays an important role in disseminating information where information breakers inform the public and the stakeholders of an event of interest. For example, a flooding may swipe away a bridge and an information breaker could use social media to inform other motorists of the crisis. It is however worth noting that social media as with other forms of communication has been used to spread rumors in times of crisis and it is important for the crisis management team to closely monitor social media and squash any rumors (TFCC, 2013). Controlling Rumors One of the biggest challenges that an organization can face in times of crisis is controlling rumors. In essence, rumors tend to feed other rumors and if such rumors reach the media, they become formalized as reality. In emergency situations, rumors arise mostly due to uncertainty and lack of information by which the public and stakeholders can understand the crisis. Where there lacks enough information, people attempts to create meaning by patching the little information there is the result of which is a rumor. Crisis communication is an endeavor by health care professionals to provide information that enable clients and stakeholders to make the best achievable decisions during an emergency about their welfare inside a narrow time margin. Authors Flannery and Everly (2000) state, "A crisis occurs when a stressful life event overwhelms an individual's ability to cope effectively in the face of a perceived challenge or threat" (p.119). Often, in times of disaster, the effectiveness of being a sender of communication or its receiver is affected due to elevated levels of stress related to a stressor that threatens a person's personal security or self–integrity (Arnold & Boggs, 2011) therefore defeating the individual's ability to perform and function normally. It has been marked by a glut of organizational crises including natural disasters, technology disruption, and acts of terrorism, scandals, and financial mismanagement. Yet, many leaders are ill–prepared for the important role they may need to play in leading an organization through a crisis. At the beginning of the decade people all over the world scrambled to tackle the potential technological disruption of the Y2K bug which was one of the utmost crises. Smoldering–like crisis situations typically result from the simple day to day work performed in an organization and often take the form of management mistakes that have built up over a period of time. Phases of crisis Management: Phase 1: Signal Detection While these are less evident in many crisis that occur suddenly and without warning (e.g., natural disaster), most other types of crisis have a number of early warning signs that lead an enlightened manager to know something is wrong. A slowly building increase in customer complaints or defect rates, for example, can be a sign of trouble in product quality. Phase 2: Preparation/Prevention The preparation and prevention phase is one in which managers engage in activities to plan for or avert a crisis. These activities may include developing crisis policies and procedures, identifying a crisis response team, performing crisis drills, and more. As the preparation and prevention stage of crisis management should not imply that the goal for managers is to prevent all crises, but rather engage in realistic planning in order to better position the organization to prevent some crises and to manage those that are unavoidable. • 143. Implementing A Crisis Management Plan Businesses should have a crisis management plan to deal with any unexpected issues that may arise during the course of the day to day operations. Implementing a crisis management plan will help a company to be prepared for any situation that may occur. Crisis management is defined as "the process of handling a high–impact event characterized by ambiguity and the need for swift action" (Thorne, O. Ferrell, & L. Ferrell, 2011, p. 66). There is a four stage process that a crisis will follow from the time the issue occurs until the resolution of the issue. Many businesses that are not prepared for an unexpected crisis are unable to handle the situation correctly and as a result their reputation is damaged because of it. Coca–Cola is a company that has suffered from many crises and because of their poor crisis management the company is still trying to rebuild their image in the eyes of the consumer. Coca–Cola suffered a major crisis in June 1999 when children in Belgium became sick after consuming Coke products. The Coca–Cola Company was unable to handle this crisis adequately and because they were unprepared to handle this issue they lost consumer trust and much of the European market. Their slow response time gave people little hope that they were in control and taking care of the problem. The Belgium government had to step in and recall all Coke products, which eventually led to the Netherlands and Luxembourg following suit. If Coca–Cola would have had an effective crisis ... Aspects of Crisis Management: An Examination Aspects of Crisis Management: An Examination As we've seen throughout the history of humankind, crisis situations and other such disasters have long been a part of the human story and the human experience. One of the most defining incidences which helped to fine–tune some of the more pervasive strategies of the field and the techniques of professionals in crisis management was the terrorist attack during the Munich Olympics in 1972. During this time certain trends were in use and seen as priorities when attempting to mitigate the situation. These were things like containing and negotiating with the hostage taker in such an incident, understanding the hostage takers motivation, and the necessity of slowing down a given incidence so that the negotiator and tactical team have more time to work (McMains& Mullins, 2010). However, so much of the success of managing a given incidence revolves around the fact that the tactical team and the negotiating team need to work in utter harmony, providing one another with strong levels of consistent support. In addition to this amount of mutual support, there also needs to be a serious focus within each team, as each has their own needs and methods. The tactical team provides a tremendous amount of fundamental groundwork so that the negotiating team can do their job. "They block and prevent escape or location movement by the hostage taker. Pre–crisis Best Practices The first set of crisis communication best practices, pre–crisis, focuses on prevention–the act of "seeking to reduce known risks that could lead to a crisis"–and preparation–the act of creating training, and testing a crisis management plan and crisis management team (Coombs, 2007). Crisis management plans (CMP) are reference tools (i.e. key contacts information, crisis step reminders, forms, etc.) that save crisis management teams (CMT)–pre–selected members of an organization– time during a crisis. Once created, CMPs enable an organization to react quicker and more efficiently to a crisis. Common members of an organization's CMT include, but are not limited to: an organization's CEO, Chief of Public Relations, Vice President, Social Media Manager, legal counsel and Senior Manager in charge of the area involved in the crisis. Collectively, these members will work together to enact the organization's crisis management plan "in order to facilitate an effective organizational response" (Coombs, 2007a). The members will be charged with gathering facts; identifying specific key publics; preparing and creating key messages (including self–efficacy messages if necessary), preparing and creating media statements and media contact logs; designating and training spokesperson(s); selecting and designating proper channels of ... The first of these being pumping of groundwater, although an effective solution in the short term (offsetting almost 70% of the water shortage and reducing crop fallow and job losses), these reserves will become ever more expensive to extract and will eventually run out. Under irrigating land, idling of land and shifting of crops go together as strategies that will save the proprietor water but will also decrease output and consequently operating profits. Another is the use of water conservation technologies such as shade balls or permeable tarmac, aligning with Boserup's 1965 theory that 'Necessity is the mother of all invention' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An article written by Ostrander (2015) gives an interesting take on longer term and more sustainable strategies for L.A in response to the Californian drought, all of which revolve around changing the way the city deals with its water. The article states that the concreting of channels and river beds and an increase in urban impermeable surfaces have meant that less water can filter into the ground, rather it either floods or drains straight into the ocean. In changing the rhetoric of storm water being a nuisance and restoring waterways to allow them to hold, slow and filter water would fix many problems at once. Combining this with technology such as permeable tarmac would allow groundwater to replenish faster when the rains arrive. Although these solutions are not cheap, they are said to be far cheaper than desalinization. In addition, It is estimated that through strategies such as these, L.A could reduce its water import from 85% to just over half. An article by Hudson (2015) gives recommendations for combatting drought with far longer term orientation, all of which, similar to Ostrander, revolve around the management of water. The article argues that restricting people s water use is a temporary measure. Corporate leaders must have processes for learning of important safety issues. Then they must seize control immediately and lead a systematic response. Crisis management is the ultimate stress test for the CEO and other top leaders of companies. The mantra for all leaders in crisis management must be: "It is our problem the moment we hear about it. We will be judged from that instant forward for everything we do–and don't do." These are key lessons for leaders in all types of businesses from the front page stories about Toyota's and GM's separate, lengthy delays in responding promptly and fully to reports of deadly accidents possibly linked to product defects. The news focus has been on regulatory investigations and enforcement relating to each company, but the ultimate question is why the company leaders didn't forcefully address the possible defect issues when deaths started to occur. On the recent regulatory front: Toyota just agreed to pay $1.2 billion in a deferred prosecution agreement with DOJ and accept a safety monitor for failing to disclose to regulators–and indeed misleading them–about accelerators that became stuck on certain types of floor mats or because of certain elements in the accelerator itself.
