The Female And Female Imagery Of The Apocalypse Of John
This week's reading is excerpts from A Feminist Companion to The Apocalypse of John which examine the male and female imagery of the Book of
Revelation in various ways. Each contributor explained the gendered symbolism in one of four ways: Christian purity, recast of Greco–Roman goddess
mythology, character 'rhetography' of wealth, and male–deity dominance. While the studies found in previous weeks were fine pointed in their
scholastic dissection, more or less, the studies this week pull out details to find broader pictures and showcase the plurality offered during the
interpretation of the Book of Revelation.
Stenstrum viewed the male–female symbols of Revelation as a parallel to John of Patmos' view of the ideal Christian. The divided world in which its
author resided, led Revelation to further the dichotomy by "drawing a line in the sand" between pure and impure Christians. This is best illustrated by
the contrast between the classical images of the woman bathed by the sun and the Great Whore of Babylon. The purity language is used in both the
male and female symbols, symbols which are further glorified by the negative use of such sexual imagery as the previous example. Men to be used
for God's Holy War, such as the 144,000 in verse 14.4, are also expected to maintain purity and remain virgins. The use of male–female symbolism did
not remain in the sexual realm. In other words, some of the dualism between the genders had "nothing to do with sex and bodies". For instance,

The Characters Being Dead In The Song Of Solomon
Song of Solomon Questions 1. The characters being "dead" in the text can be related to their race and/or their gender. Milkman can be seen as
dead because he has no purpose in life; he doesn't seem to know what being black means like the other characters in the text do, and he doesn't
realize how him being a man affects the females in the text. Most of the women are dead because they are left behind or controlled by the men in
the story. They do not take their lives for their own, so they do not have one; they can be considered dead. However, Pilate could break this trend
because unlike the other females she takes her life for herself and controls it. Later on in the story, Guitar can be seen as dead even though it's not
apart of his name. He lets his life be controlled by anger and hunger. Despite him justifying his actions with the Seven Days as justice, he does this
based on anger and cannot answer Milkman's questions on the ethical view of it. He also seeks to take the life of Milkman when he suspects he's
run off with the gold. 2. The song in the novel gives insight on the background knowledge that Milkman is looking for about his family. The events
that the song describes can also be applied to Milkman and the people around him. Those who know the Song of Solomon do not question Solomon
flying off and leaving behind everyone. They are also quick to put Ryna in a bad light, naming her after a ditch and saying she could not live without a
man. This is a

The Film I Will Be Evaluating A Sprawling Two Part Sex...
The film I will be evaluating is Nymphomaniac a sprawling two–part sex drama that blurs the line between art and porn. It follows a sex addict named
Joe as she's found battered in an alleyway by an older bachelor named Seligman. In explaining how she came to be in such a condition, flashback
scenes unfold in chapters introduced by snapping witty dialogue between Joe and Seligman. It begins with Joe throughout her teenage years, when she
first begins to discover her insatiable sexual appetite. Then through her adult life as she is pushed out of normal society. The film whips through a
wide range of topics, such as gender role conformity, consent, and, metal dysfunction.
To begin with Joe is a self–described nymphomaniac, which is a former term for excessive sexual desire in a woman, which may lead to promiscuous
sexual behavior. Most psychologists have argued against the use of the term for year it's an antiquated and demeaning word used to denigrate sexual
women. It is not a medical or psychiatric diagnosis. Her correct diagnosis is hypersexuality, which can apply to anyone, is not a true mental disorder,
but a symptom of a much larger problem. I like the title and think it was a fascinating and intentional plot–related choice by Von trier, for this reason
that Joe does display other issues like low self–esteem, loneliness, and, attachment avoidance. I like the title it made me think about how we use words.
Furthermore, this movie is touted as a pro feminist love

The Ballad Of Sir Isaac Newton Research Paper
The Ballad of Sir Isaac Newton by Love Varg offers a brief summary of the mathematician, astronomer and physicist Isaac Newton. It gives insight into
his life including his date of birth, where he was raised, where he went to school, and much more. Quickly skimming through the life of Newton, the
ideas and concepts within the poem can be expanded upon to discover who Isaac Newton truly was. The Ballad dives into his personal life, his life as a
scientist, and his social life. While growing up, Isaac Newton seemed to be a regular kid. He had a family that was there for him while he was
young: "Little Isaac mine was born/on the same day as our king / he could fit into a quarters mug, / his mother used to sing" (The Ballad of Sir Isaac
Newton). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When expanded upon, the words within the ballad give the reader a good understanding of the time period and who Isaac Newton was. These
characteristics are what make him such a household name today. His laws are still taught in modern day physics and calculus is one of the fundamental
classes taught in schools. If it weren't for Isaac newton, there may not be such an advanced understanding of contemporary science today. Isaac
Newton's unusual life is important in understanding how he became such a memorable

The Peoples Temple
The Peoples Temple began as a church that supported social equality and justice, but slowly changed into a prophetic movement; a network of
individuals, tightly organized in a communal group that attaches its identity to charismatic leadership and the teachings of that leader. The movement's
leader Jim Jones claimed to be the "God–sent prophet" . In order to expand, he later moved his congregation to California and eventually Guyana where
he created the closed community of Jonestown. However, in 1978, members of Jonestown murdered Congressman Leo Ryan, and all residents of
Jonestown committed suicide. The apocalyptic beliefs of the Peoples Temple shaped its identity and led to the murder of Congressman Ryan, this
belief also marked its demise. By using apocalyptic literature, the book of Revelation, as reference, the actions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat.
This apocalyptic motif of good versus evil, and the salvation of the good not only shaped the identity of the Peoples Temple, but also framed the death
of the organization.
The belief of a battle between good and evil has always existed in the practices of the Peoples Temple. The Peoples Temple is an Alternative
Religious Movement, which is an alternative religious group or organization that, typically, is separated from the larger society both in its theological
beliefs and its practices of those beliefs. Indeed, when the Peoples Temple first emerged, Rebecca Moore described it saying:
Demographic figures are uncertain, with one source claiming that the congregation was one–fifth African American by 1960, and another asserting it
was more than fifty percent African American. Although the smaller figure is likelier, in either case a mixed congregation was rare in the

Chronicle Of A Death Foretold By Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Philosophy is a device for society to come to terms with themselves and what is beyond themselves. Nobel Prize–winning author, Gabriel Garcia
Marquez, critiques the philosophy of a small river town in Columbia in his novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold. In this nameless town, religion
holds the population in a tight grip, allowing ideas such as the restoration of purity to grow and cloud the morals of the public. Through the use of
characterization, grotesque imagery, and symbolism, Marquez evokes a question of how beneficial the Catholic Church is to society. In Columbia,
around 90% of the population belongs to the Catholic Church. This church, as seen in Chronicle of a Death Foretold, has been twisted by several
corrupt authority figures. This includes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marquez characterizes him as an egotistical being who goes against Catholic beliefs. He wastes the food that has been granted to him by God, which
contradicts the biblical verse,"And when they had eaten their fill, [Jesus Christ] told his disciples, 'Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may
be lost'" (John 6:12–14). This enforces the image of a corrupted figure in power and reveals the sin that surrounds the church in Chronicle of a Death
Foretold. Marquez further emphasizes the dysfunction and illusion of the divine power that the Catholic Church possesses by critiquing the blessings
given by the bishop, such as when,"the bishop began to make the sign of the cross, crossed the square in the air opposite the crowd on the pier, and he
kept on doing it mechanically afterwards" (17). The

The Apocalypse Of John 's Revelation
The Apocalypse of John, otherwise known as the book of Revelation, is a climatic example of apocalyptic literature, ultimately ending with the end of
the earthly world and the second coming of Christ. The final text dated around 95 CE, the author identifies himself as "John" in the first chapter of the
book, causing many to believe that John the Apostle, who allegedly wrote the book of John, also authored this apocalyptic text; however, scholars
agree that John the Apostle wrote no books of the New Testament, and therefore the author of Revelation is another unknown John (Ehrman 2014,
367). No matter the authorship, the book of Revelation poses many questions to biblical scholars, especially questions on what the symbolic texts
means in historical context, and how the text should be interpreted by a contemporary, twenty–first century audience. In chapters 1–3 of Revelation,
John depicts the setting in which he received the vision he is about to unveil. John was imprisoned on Patmos, a Greek island, when an angel came to
him with an apocalyptic vision. The angel instructed him to write to seven churches about his vision, providing them information and urging them to
heed his prophecy. John write to these churches, "Therefore write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will
take place after these things" (Revelation 1:19). John follows this basic outline throughout the entire book: he depicts the past and the present first,

What is the Illuminati? The Illuminati is a secret society...
What is the Illuminati? The Illuminati is a secret society that was founded on May 1, 1776 . This was known as the Bavarian Illuminati. The goal of the
Illuminati was to eliminate superstition, prejudice, and the Roman Catholic Church's domination over government, philosophy, and science; reduce
abuse of state power, support the education and treatment of women as intellectual equals . Throughout time the Illuminati has undergone a change of
philosophy. There are many examples in pop culture and in government symbols. The Illuminati now focuses on dominating the government and the
entertainment industry. Some of the most prominent symbols of the Illuminati are the Pyramids, the All Seeing Eye of Horus, El Diablo, the

prominent figure, is connected with the Illuminati. It is a symbol of Minerva, which is the goddess of wisdom. The Bohemian Grove which is where
the figure is located is considered a planning site of the Illuminati that is located in the Red Wood forest of Northern California. The Pentagram is also
connected with the Illuminati. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson appointed a freemason to design the layout of Washington D.C. The layout
of the streets makes a pentagram, although the pentagram is not quite completed . The number 666, which is the number of the Beast, is suggested to
be a part of the Illuminati. It is also associated with the Anti–Christ, which would eventually take over the helm of the Illuminati. Another Illuminati
symbol would be the eternal flame. The Statue of Liberty is a prime example of the eternal flame with her lighted torch. The Statue of Liberty is the
pagan goddess, Semiramis, the whore of Babylon. She represents the destruction of the Old World Order and the creation of the New World Order .
Another important symbol of the Illuminati is the skull. The skull reminds young initiates of their morality. An Obelisk is a monument built of stone.

John Was Preaching Against Rome
John was preaching against Rome in Revelation
In the late first century a follower of Jesus of Nazareth, John of Patmos, received a vision of the end the world. John later wrote this vision down
and his writing has come down to modernity as The Book of Revelation also known as The Apocalypse of John. When John wrote Revelation was
he using it as a coded message to preach against Rome? In this vision, John saw many images that could be read as Rome or Roman if viewed from a
historical context. Subsequent generations have interpreted the imagery within their own historical context. With this paper I will argue that
Revelation pertains to the Roman world and culture that John and his followers were living in, the events in Judea that are thought to have occurred
within his life time and that John used some of the same imagery to connect his writing to the Hebrew Bible. There are two main competing dates for
the writing of Revelation, an early date of 69–70 and a later date of 90–92. This paper will be using the 69–70 date and will be providing evidence to
prove why this date works better for the context of this paper. First this paper will establish the time frame in which John wrote Revelation. George H.
van Kooten's article, The Year of the Four Emperors and the Revelation of John: The 'pro–Neronian' Emperors Otho and Vitellius, and the Images and
Colossus of Nero in Rome, from Journal for the Study of the New Testament points, "In the midst of this war (in 68),

Analyses of Race and Gender Issues in Othello
The discussion of race in Shakespeare's Othello has received a great deal of critical attention. Virginia Mason Vaughn, in her book Othello: A
Contextual History, surveys this critical history, beginning with Marvin Rosenberg's 1961 book The Masks ofOthello (a book documenting the
nineteenth–century tendency toward representing Othello as light–skinned), and continuing through to Jack D'Amico's 1991 book The Moor in English
Renaissance Drama. According to Vaughan herself, "The effect of Othello depends . . . on the essential fact of the hero's darkness, the visual signifier
of his Otherness" (51). Arthur L. Little, Jr., in his article "'An essence that's not seen': The Primal... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The discourses of Renaissance misogyny can be seen clearly in such pamphlets as Joseph Swetnam's The Araignment of Lewd, Idle, Froward, and
Vnconstatnt Women (1616): "For women have a thousand ways to entise thee, and ten thousand waies to deceiue thee" (15); "they lay out the foldes
of their haire, to entangle men into their loue; betwixt their brests is the vale of destruction, & in their beds there is hell, sorrow & repentance" (16);
"Eagles eat not men till they are dead, but women deuoure them aliue: for a woman will pick thy pocket, and empty thy purse, laugh in thy face and
cut thy throat" (16); "They will play the horse–leach to suck away thy wealth, but in the winter of thy misery shee will flie away from thee" (16).
Women are here figured as deceiving, dishonest, and dangerous creatures concerned solely with the entrapment and destruction of men. They are
portrayed as uncontrollable. The concern over the sexual fidelity of women–in reality a concern for masculine control over feminine sexuality–is
reflected in John Raynolds' A Defence of the Ivdgement of the Reformed Churches (1610): "the truth deliverd by our Saviour Christ alloweth hime
whose wife commiteth fornication, to put her away, and to marrie another" (2); "it is lawfull for him who hath put away his wife for whoredome to
marrie another" (3).

Similarities Between Metropolis And Dystopiar Cities
MODULE : METROPOLIS AND NINETEEN EIGHTY–FOUR ESSAY Dystopian societies illustrate how historical contexts can influence the
political and social values of the time, exploring the extent of the potential for exploitation of power. Fritz Lang's German expressionist film,
'Metropolis' (1927) and George Orwell's satirical novel 'Nineteen Eighty Four' (1949) dramatise the impact of oppressive controlling forces upon the
individual illustrating an abuse of power, emphasising the potential of its exploitation of the populist. Lang reflects the anxieties of the Weimar
Republic, under the hyperinflation after World War I, highlighting the consequences of rapid industrialisation and the subsequent disunity between the
working and upper classes, whilst... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This expresses the reality of post–World War I as the film's introductory sequence draws upon German Expressionist elements presenting a low–angle of
towering skyscrapers in Bauhaus design and abstract machinery. This artistic vivid and opulent setting contrasts with extreme close up of machines
suggesting the collective power of movement parallel to the workers, as they operate machinery beneath the city in synchronicity. This disparity
creates a defined hierarchical structure that juxtaposes the heightened sense of power experienced by the ruling elite with the worker's sense of loss of
identity in the face of technological expansion. This extreme dichotomy exposes the innate fear of abuse of power within a capitalist framework as
audiences perceived the potential of conformity to a totalitarian corporation, leading to dehumanisation of humanity. Further explored in the creation
scene, the political perspective reveals how the over development of technology for progress, consequently results in abuse of power. This is
developed as the machine man is displayed in a low angle shot underneath upside–down pentagram, the religious motif symbolic of how Rotwang
proves to be usurping the powers of god, emphasising that through the abuse of power, technology has the ability to create a loss of identity leading to
dehumanisation. Through the technological expansion made apparent through Lang's dystopic world the potential of the exploitation of power is

No Big Secret That The Evangelical Community Essay
It is no big secret that the evangelical community played a role in Trump's winning of the election. He had solid Christian support throughout his
campaign; at least so it seemed. Obviously, people of all sorts – Christian or not – Republican or not – were frustrated at the lack of options. I
understand. I was one of them. People were also rightly concerned about Hillary. They were left with a choice of either Armageddon or slow rot.
Much was at stake – especially the Supreme Court. I was in a unique place of one who has just discovered that the candidate I might have
begrudgingly voted for voted for was, in fact, The Antichrist; a scenario that elevates such decisions to another dimensional reality. After I had shared
my thoughts regarding Trump with several Christians supporting him, I often got the question posed to me: "Well, who do we vote for?" As far as I
was concerned, the vote was already cast. I knew the outcome. I would often tell people, "If you want to vote for Trump, vote for Trump. You will be
voting for the winner." The voting thing for me was not much of an issue because Trump's win was predestined.
Revelation 17 speaks of the religious component of The Whore of Babylon; a last–days religious system temporarily in bed with the beast (The

Exploring Revelation Essay
Exploring Revelation
What is revelation? There are many different uses of the word revelation. It can be the speech act of making something evident, an enlightening or
astonishing disclosure or a communication of knowledge to man by a divine or supernatural agency.
The last book of the New Testament contains visionary descriptions of heaven and of conflicts between good and evil and of the end of the world.
The author of this book tells us his name is John. However, the John of Revelation does not claim to be a disciple or to have known Jesus. Scholars
have said that John of Revelation was a significant figure in the early church in the Roman province of Asia Minor. TheBook of Revelation ... Show

The imagery in the Book of Revelations shows that good triumphs over evil, suggesting that faithfulness will be rewarded to Christians and justice
will be done. Although most people believe that the book of Revelation is a book about the end of the world, it is also believed that it is not
prophesising the end of the world but it is a polemic against the Roman Empire. The book is Revelation is also known as "The Revelation of John"
and "St. Johns Apocalypse."
The Book of Revelation is the primary source of inspiration of Christian prophecy believers. The last book and only apocalypse in the New
Testament, it was likely written in the last decade of the first century, during a period of great turmoil after the destruction of the second Jewish
Temple by the Romans in 70 A.D. Biblical scholars are sceptical of the historical claim that the Apostle John was its author. Millions of Christians
have taken the events so vividly described in Revelation as a blueprint for what will happen in the last days as God brings an end to this world. But
beyond that, many ideas and symbols from Revelation have found a place in the wider culture, including: the Mark of the Beast, represented by the
number "666;" the seven seals; the four horsemen of the Apocalypse; the Whore of Babylon; and the

The Book ' Of Revelation, The Final Book Of The Bible
The book of Revelation, the final book of the bible, is one of the most interesting and symbolic readings for many. With an unknown author,
apocalyptic foreshadowing, and obscure meanings, it has been interpreted a number of different ways. Starting with the history, the symbolism, and
ways to interpret it, the aim of this paper is to give the reader a better understanding of the book. We know for a fact that the book was written by
John to the seven churches of Asia Minor "I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and kingdom and patience that are in Jesus, was on the
island which is called Patmos, because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus." Revelations 1:9–10 There is speculation that John was
imprisoned on Patmos for the crime of not worshiping the Roman emperor. It is a popular tradition for many to believe John the apostle to be the
author of revelation, however the writer of revelation never claimed to be an apostle. The literary form in this book is called "apocalyptic" writing.
This means that the book is not straight forward in delivering its message. The actual message is concealed in symbols, numbers, and images. It is
also considered a prophecy by Catholics. This is stated in Revelation 1:3. "Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy,
and keep the things that are written therein; for the time is at hand." The purpose of the letter was to contact the seven churches of Asia Minor, present
day Turkey. It is

Symbolism In Revelations
"... In the days of their prophecy: [they will] have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they
will." (Rev. 11:6). This connection between blood and the beginning of the plague are a key theme throughout Revelations, and have continued in
modern literature through zombieism and AIDS. Although the End is usually spoken about within the idea of naturalistic destruction on Earth, the End
may be more human than that and come unexpectedly from humanity itself: "They are frightening for the very reason that they do not look like our
enemies at all... they look disturbingly like our co–workers, neighbours, friends and families" (Dendle 50); "they" being the key term. The idea of this
"they", this "other–ness" in Revelations, gives us an insight of what is to come and names those "not (in) white" (7:14), women ... Show more content

Otherness within zombieism can be represented through the Haitian zombie; the zombie symbol of otherness, of 'blackness', of the savage in both the
offensive and zombie context. Dendle discusses blackness and the blood of the Haitian zombie within the context of a 1935 film called Ouanga; "...
even though her skin appeared fully white, she still has black blood in her veins... your white skin doesn't change what's inside you" (47). This
directly connects to AIDS and the idea of the "general population", which can be explained as "not just whites but heterosexuals" (Sontag 67). Long
goes into detail of why this is, explaining that "homosexuality itself [had already been made out to be] a contagious disease; an apocalyptic signifier, a
sign of 'end times'," (2) so when the 'epidemic' of AIDS hit, the "general population" believed that it was "punishment for not living God's way", and
further emphasized their "other–ness" by mentioning its spread in South Africa. (Sontag

There are three demonic creatures that are described in Revelation 12–13: a dragon, the Beast out of the Sea and the Beast out of the Earth. Chapter 12

The second and third creatures are described in Revelation 13 as the Beast out of the Sea and the Beast out of the Earth. The Beast out of the Sea is
described in Revelation 13:1b–2a as having, "Ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. The
beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like a lion." Mounce points out, along with other commentators, that the
Beast out of the Sea combines characteristics of the four beasts in Daniel 7 (Mounce 240). That is, a lion, a bear, a four–headed leopard, and a fourth
beast with iron teeth and many horns.
According to Revelation 13, the Beast of the Sea has the destructive power to have the people worship and follow him. Along with the power to wage
war against God's people of every tribe, language, and nation and conquer them. This power is given to him for 42 months. Beale believes that, "The
references to the opponent speaking great things against God in Daniel 7:8, 11, 20 and 25 refer to the boastful horn associated with the fourth
kingdom, which John saw as prophetic of Rome and its corporate successors" (Beale 695). He also believes that the Beast of the Sea is not identical
with the Roman state, but simply shows itself through the power and destruction of the Roman state (Beale

The Whore of Babylon woodcut by Albert Durer was one of fifteen woodcuts in his famous series, The Apocalypse which was published in 1498.
This woodcut series portrays scenes from the book of Revelation in the bible, concerning the end of the world. It was created at a time when Europe
anticipated the "Last Judgement", as Germany was experiencing plagues, religious debates, and peasant movements towards the end of the 15th
century. Durer became wealthy and rapidly well known across Europe because of this series. He began working on these woodcuts on his trip to Italy

This is due to the use of a tool, a burin, to create extremely thin and subtle lines in an engraving. The medium used for an engraving is metal and is
created using an intaglio method. Unlike the relief process of printmaking, this process is a positive one. The artist scratches the image onto the metal
plate, inks the surface of it, and wipes it clean. As a result, ink is placed into the carved out drawing. Next, the plate is run through a roller press
which causes the ink to absorb to the paper. The difference in appearance between a relief print and an intaglio print is because of essentially drawing
the image to be created onto the metal plate for an intaglio print. Also cross–hatching, the use of fine parallel lines to create the illusion of shade,
allowed for more subtle shading in the engraving. This engraving portrays the melancholy personality of artists and Durer, himself. It is suggested
that the winged figure represents Durer because of the location of his monogram or logo underneath the bench that figure is sitting on. Her pondering
stance represents an artistic genius who is looking for inspiration, but cannot find it, therefore experiences despair in her/himself. The winged child
sitting to the left of the winged female, represents anxiety that the uninspired artist could be experiencing. In addition, in the upper left corner, a bat
is found with the words "melencholia" beside it. The bat represents melancholy because it only appears or comes out at night and is linked with the
darkness. Durer contrasts melancholy and the light of inspiration by associating this bat in the dark sky with rays of light. Essentially, because of the
wood medium used in the Whore Of Babylon, lines appear broader, whereas using metal as a medium allowed the Melencollia engraving to display

Karen L. Edwards The Mother Of All Femmes
Eve has been considered as the mother of femmes fatales. Karen L. Edwards, in "The Mother of All Femmes Fatales: Eve as Temptress in Genesis 3"

divinely forbidden act in order to gain illicit knowledge, thus luring him to death, and with him the rest of human kind" (35). Another good illustration
of the fatal woman is Lilith, who has been dismissed from the Garden of Aden after claiming her equality with Adam in terms of sexuality and desires.

"alluring and seductive nature" is emphasized as she temps and leads the men of God astray into her evil and idolatrous clutches. The harlots of the
ancient world "offered their bodies and sexual services for payment," enhancing the view that Babylon is a great prostitute who engages with the kings
of the earth. Nahum 3:4 and Isaiah 23:17 both allude to a city committing "fornication with [the] nations,." which then leads to divine judgment,
emphasizing that this woman's great and abhorrent sin in the eyes of the Lord will not go unpunished.

5–6: Just as God's servants are sealed with a mark on their forehead, so too is the great harlot marked as the "mother of prostitutes and of earth's

boastfully pronounces. The "mystery" of this woman's name refers to Nebuchadnezzar dream in Daniel 4:9 where he is warned of the disaster that
lies ahead if his pride is left unchecked. This mystery may signify that the harlot's name "is not open and obvious to all," and that the name itself may
not be understood by the people of the time. The word mystery here may be a part of the harlot's name, but more likely it is meant to bring out "the
significance of what follows," a proper transition that brings out the meaning of the name. The saints faithfully continue to witness about Christ, and
thus are killed as they "engage in fearless witness throughout this period," even to the point of death.

practices of the Roman Empire. In this essay, I will contend that while the text of Revelation itself is about the past, more specifically Rome, it can also
be used to characterise the present by reinterpretation.
The time around which the book of Revelation is supposed to be written, around 64 CE, coincides

Examples Of Stereotypes In Beauty And The Beast
Beauty and the Beast
How much does one's judgement affect their view of someone, from strangers to close relatives? Stereotypes and stigmas are attached to everyone and
everything. The first thought that an individual may affiliate with when seeing "Beauty and the Beast" is Disney. "Beauty and the Beast" by Beaumont
was created with a twist that doesn't have the fairy tale touch you usually see in a Disney movie. Although this short story may have its similarities to
Disney's rendition, The Beauty and the Beast is far from being the same. This story, "Beauty and the Beast", shows readers that your first thought to an
idea may not be the right one. One must look deeper into an idea to find the true intentions of it; it gives a deeper look into morals.
In continuation, there are various parts throughout the story where the main idea keeps being introduced. For example, when Beast is first introduced
he is portrayed as an irrational monster for threatening the father with death over a flower. In reality, he isn't the antagonist here because the Beast
accommodated the father and without hesitation made him his guest. He had already given him much of his hospitality, so he felt disrespected that the
father, on his way out, would still be in need of more. Another example that supports this main idea is when Beauty initially arrives to the castle and is
automatically intimidated by the Beast and its looks. For example, when analyzing the text, her fears are expressed by her

The Gods Of The Ancient World
Some of the Goddesses of the Ancient World
The goddesses named in this chapter occur in the midst of the earliest pagan deities mentioned in numerous ancient writings; particularly, the ones
frequently linked to the land of Canaan. In fact, several of the goddesses that promoted idolatry and prostitution exist directly in the King James Version
of the Bible, such as Ashtoreth, Diana and Lilith. Although, the word 'prostitute' exists only once (Lev 19:29), still, prostitution happens to be
identified with various words; such as "whore(s), whoredom(s). harlot(s), pollute or polluted;" (which can mean prostitute) that encounters being
mentioned frequently. The prophets of the Bible warned regarding whoring after other gods and goddesses and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For due to the goddess, routinely unmarried women, including those from the chief families in the country, befell being ordered to prostitute
themselves in the temple at least once during their lifetime. Herodotus' describes this ancient practice that exploited women sexually, stating:
Emphatically, due to the goddesses, women and young girls required to have their virginity callously stolen away–how sick is that? Indeed, the paint
brush of this practice appears to be broad among the fertility goddesses, for this domination became witnessed repeatedly in various lands; instigating
unwanted pregnancy. Generally, the most vulnerable time in a female's life occurs generally during pregnancy or the rearing of small children;
therefore this reality helped evil cripple women into submission through the centuries. The following occurs as a brief summary of a few of the main
goddesses in the land of Mesopotamia, the ancient Middle East and surrounding areas.
Lilith
Lilith became intertwined with Ishtar and Inanna in Babylonian as sacred prostitutes, and in the Old Testament her existence occurs subtly.
Furthermore, Lilith became a sexual predator towards men and dwelled in desolate desert places as stated in the Bible. Along with other demons, Lilith
occurs referenced in the Dead Sea Scrolls that contains an undeniable indication of Lilith's reputation by being grouped with evil. Virtually, early
portrayals of various demons identify with Lilith and became

Payday Lending Research Paper
Apocalyptic Thinking on Payday Lending Apocalyptic thinking has been going on for centuries. Perhaps surprisingly, many manifestations of
apocalyptic thinking derive from biblical texts. In fact, several prominent theologians have argued that apocalyptic thought is the cornerstone of
Christian theology. However, the apocalypse isn't what you might think it is. It's real definition is a revealing, or bringing forth of the truth. Really
different than that thought of the general populace. In this paper I hope to further look and reveal a truth about payday lenders, or at least convince

In this story, we are met with imagery of a woman wearing a red and purple dress, sitting on a monster with seven heads, which is sitting on seven
mountains in Babylon. In Revelation 17:9 the "seven mountains" is typically understood as the seven hills of Rome, this is because on some
Roman coins, minted under the Emperor Vespasian, depicts Rome as a woman sitting on seven hills. Many Biblical scholars believe that
"Babylon" is a metaphor for the pagan Roman Empire at the time it persecuted Christians, before the Edict of Milan in 313: possibly referencing
some aspect of Rome's rule (brutality, greed, paganism). Some of these experts have interpreted the passage as a severe critique to the people in
Rome who do the Emperor's bidding, interpreting that the author of Revelation was speaking of the Herodians, and later, corrupt Hasmoneans, where
the ruler of Jerusalem or Roman Judea exercised his power given to him by the Emperor, and was dependent on Roman wealth and power, like Herod

Essay on Who Is Babylon?
In Revelation chapters 17 and 18 we read about the great whore named Babylon who sits on many waters and is the mother of all harlots. The imagery
in which the apostle John uses to describe Babylon has very significant meaning, in particular for the church as she approaches the end of the age. It is
of paramount importance to understand who this Babylon is and how she affects the life of every believer.
Throughout the ages there have been many attempts to identify Babylon. Most have agreed that she is the Roman Catholic Church (in particular the
Vatican), even to the point of identifying the Pope as the anti–Christ himself. Others have suggested that Babylon is not a religious structure but more
likely political, pointing to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

charge of their own destinies. They set up moral and ethical standards of life which cannot be violated because of "personal rights", while at the same

Metropolis, released in 1927, directed by Fritz Lang, fits mostly fits under the science–fiction and drama genres (IMDb). Metropolis reveals a dystopian

Symbolism In Lord Of The Flies
Human nature, innocence, civilization, security, and sanity. Each is a common idea in both literature and everyday life but despite how regular these
concepts may occur, they are more delicate than they appear. William Golding presents such ideas in the novel Lord of the Flies, which tells the tale of
a group of English schoolboys whose plane has been shot down in the middle of an unnamed nuclear war and crashed on an uninhabited island. Upon
crashing, the boys discover that they must govern themselves and work together towards survival ultimately causing their own war of adolescence on
the once serene island, destroying both the land and the last shred of innocence and civilization left in the group. Percival Wemys Madison, the conch,
the fire, the island, and the beast are all utilized throughout the entirety of the novel to symbolize the deeper meanings behind the actions and
interactions of the boys.
Percival Wemys Madison, one of the younger boys on the island, is a symbol of innocence and truehuman nature. On page 86 Percival is called up to
speak at an assembly but, rather than explaining what he was called up to recount he stutters and begins reciting his home phone number and address
but fails to do this as well due to the anxiousness of being put on the spot in front of so many people. Succeeding his embarrassing episode, Golding
described Percival's inability to vocalize his desired intentions "As if this information was rooted down in the springs of sorrow."

Analysis Of ' The Whore ' Essay
The Whore
I had shared my thoughts with a number of Christians, some of which were inclined to support Donald Trump in the general election. Sometimes I got
the question posed to me: "Well, who do we vote for?" Obviously, people of all sorts– Christian or not – Republican or not – were frustrated at the
lack of options. I understand. I was one of them. But for a Christian who has just been told that the candidate they're planning on voting for is the
Antichrist, this takes on a whole other dimension, not to mention frustration. People were also concerned about Hillary, and rightly so. They were left
with a choice of Armageddon or slow rot. So much is at stake – especially the Supreme Court. I myself was in sort of an odd place. For me, the vote
was cast already. I knew who was going to win. I'd often tell people, "If you want to vote for Trump, vote for Trump. You'll be voting for the winner."
The voting thing for me wasn't much of an issue.
It's no big secret that the evangelical community played a role in Trump's success at the polls. He had pretty decent support throughout his campaign;
at least so it seemed. I want to address the chapter in Revelation that describes the whore of Babylon – specifically – how it relates to the religious
aspects of this "woman". There are two chapters designated to this subject: Revelation 17 and 18. Chapter 18 seems to focus more on some

Music And Cinema Music
The music selected for silent films is an important process that can affect the audience's experience. Many films rely on music to enhance the action
on screen and assist in telling the story. Emilio Audissino places music selection into two basic categories for silent film music: the first being
"cinema music," which acts as a silence filler for the viewer, and the second is "film music," with the goal to assist the film's narrative. For many silent
films. the music is primarily cinema music. However, there are some silent films that rely heavily on music to help convey the action on screen.
Metropolis (1927) is one such film, which used music scored specifically for it.
Gottfried Huppertz began composing the leitmotifs for the score during the early stages of the production of Metropolis. He created each character's
leitmotif through interactions with the actors, thus strengthening the music's relationship to the film's story. Audissino writes, "He would be on the set
to develop the themes for each character as they took form in front of the cameras, and played parts of the music for the actors to bring them into the
proper mood." Huppertz's music became an integral part of the film and decades later would assist in its restoration. When his original score was
replaced with music from other composers, this affected the film's narrative. Although other scores could convey the general atmosphere of the film,
they lacked the specific emotional connections of Huppertz's

According to the first chapter of Revelation, "I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in
Jesus was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus" (REV 1:9), it can be known that John was on an island
named Patmos when he wrote this book. The Patmos Island was mentioned at the end of the New Testament. It is a small island in the Aegean Sea,
about ninety kilometers west of Miletus. "It was in this lonely, desolate place where a man named 'John' wrote the remarkable Book of Revelation in
the last decade of the first century." Paying attention to how the island was described: lonely, desolate, I conducted some research and found that the
Patmos Island is barren, rocky, almost with no trees. For an authoritarian Roman emperor who demanded absolute submission, based on the
description of the island, the best way to utilize this island is is to exile people who disrupt the order of the emperor. Therefore, my guess is that John
was exiled to this island of Patmos. And the words–"suffering" and "endurance"–confirm my guess. John was exiled to the isolated island because of
the persecution of Christians under Domitian, the Roman emperor. The Book of Revelation was written in a time period under the reign of Domitian
who was famous for his persecution of Christians. "It

The Faerie Queene Essay
Edmund Spenser's epic poem The Faerie Queene is well known as an allegorical work, and the poem is typically read in relation to the political and
religious context of the time. The term allegory tends to be loosely defined, rendering a whole work an extended metaphor, or even implying "any
writing in verse or prose that has a double meaning"(Cuddon 20). In true Spenserian style, with everything having double meanings, both uses of the
term allegory are applicable to his writing.
Thus, during the course of this essay it is best not to think of allegory in terms of the size of a body of writing, but as writing with a "second distinct
meaning partially hidden behind its literal or visible meaning"(Baldick 6). Whilst reading for political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I am to prove the most insightful allegory is drawn from the text when examining varying meanings, and not simply prescribing one allegorical reading.
It is worth noting, that when first mentioned, multiple characters accompany Una and Duessa. They are both introduced as secondary characters,
making them supplementary to the men they are introduced with. Spenser's rich allegory allows readers to draw meaning from most of his writing,
and it is because of this that the characters with whom Una and Duessa are traveling can help readers to interpret their allegory. Una is introduced
only three stanzas after the Red Crosse Knight, but the diction of the opening line "A lovely lady rode him faire beside"(42), immediately tells
readers she is currently an accessory to the Knight. Likewise when Duessa is introduced Spenser omits to mention her name, simply stating Sansfoy
"had a faire companion of his way"(58). The first mention of both characters is almost identical; they are both described with exactly the same
adjective, "faire", and as completing the same action of accompanying a man on his travels. It is because of this sameness that it becomes important to
draw judgment of Una and Duessa's characters by their peers. With Spenser choosing to say little of them initially, both the Red Crosse Knight and
Sansfoy become indicators of Una and Duessa's identities respectively. The Red

Throughout the Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses several biblical allusions to emphasize the Puritan society this novel was set in and give
the reader a comparison of Hester to biblical figures, both holy and unholy. The Puritan society was one of strict adherence to the Bible and its

Comparing Revelation On The Relationship Of Church And State

After reading chapters twelve through thirteen and seventeen through nineteen from the book of Revelation, I have attained knowledge that allows me
to see how the author of Revelation perceives the Roman Empire. From the beginning of chapter twelve it is clearly portrayed that the woman who is
in the sky, about to give birth, is meant to symbolize Mary the mother of Jesus, or even Israel, the birthplace of Jesus. The Dragon of course, represents
Satan. When the Dragon is thrown down to Earth due to its repulsive actions of trying to harm the woman's baby, it decides to make war against the

Overall, the Roman Empire is perceived as an evil given its unruly authority and power from Satan himself. Rome's relationship with Satan (the
Dragon) is viewed as a partnership. Satan and the Roman Empire both wanted to persecute Christians, and Satan provided Rome with the opportunity
to do so by giving them such power and authority over everything. "Men worshipped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they
all worshiped the beast"(Revelation 13:4 New International Version). Although Rome pretty much had this partnership with Satan, God/Jesus was and
is still in control and that's what chapter nineteen in the book of Revelation reassures for its readers. "After this I heard what sounded like the roar of
a great multitude in heaven shouting"(Revelation 19:1 New International Version). This is a victory song and also assurance to the persecuted
Christians of Asia Minor that God is still in control and always will be and that everything will fall into place when the time is right and when he
plans for it to. God defeated the "whore of Babylon" and therefore defeated the Roman Empire once and for all.

that there was so much past heat between Christians and the Roman Empire. There were several

The Goddesses : The Gods
Distinctly, the goddesses designated in this chapter occur in the midst of the earliest pagan deities indicated in numerous ancient writings; particularly,
the ones frequently linked to the land of Canaan. In fact, several of the goddesses that promoted idolatry and prostitution exist unequivocally in the
King James Version of the Bible, such as Ashtoreth, Diana and Lilith. Although, the word 'prostitute' exists merely once (Lev 19:29), still, prostitution

the cult prostitutes developed among the numerous idols the Israelites lusted after.
In addition, the term 'goddess' takes place only five times in the manuscript; however, there occurs various terminology used to reference her high
existence. The word abomination(s) has several meanings, but essentially leans toward disgust. Conspicuously, Joseph Campbell in the "Power of

back in the 1800's I would understand because that was just how things tend to work back then. However, this is a movie written in the 1990's for
children to watch seventy years after women got the vote and were recognized to be equal to men. Nonetheless, I probably doubt that most children
who view this movie look at it in a chauvinistic way but if they did recognize the feminism towards women it would upset them. Adults on the other
hand, pick up on these inessential parts of the movie and are struck with disappointment. As I viewed the movie and realized what was actually going
on it hurt me to think that in such an innocent movie things of this nature take place. Indeed, this is just the first few signs of feminism. Sadly but
surely the events that lead me to think of

The Female And Female Imagery Of The Apocalypse Of John

  • 1. The Female And Female Imagery Of The Apocalypse Of John This week's reading is excerpts from A Feminist Companion to The Apocalypse of John which examine the male and female imagery of the Book of Revelation in various ways. Each contributor explained the gendered symbolism in one of four ways: Christian purity, recast of Greco–Roman goddess mythology, character 'rhetography' of wealth, and male–deity dominance. While the studies found in previous weeks were fine pointed in their scholastic dissection, more or less, the studies this week pull out details to find broader pictures and showcase the plurality offered during the interpretation of the Book of Revelation. Stenstrum viewed the male–female symbols of Revelation as a parallel to John of Patmos' view of the ideal Christian. The divided world in which its author resided, led Revelation to further the dichotomy by "drawing a line in the sand" between pure and impure Christians. This is best illustrated by the contrast between the classical images of the woman bathed by the sun and the Great Whore of Babylon. The purity language is used in both the male and female symbols, symbols which are further glorified by the negative use of such sexual imagery as the previous example. Men to be used for God's Holy War, such as the 144,000 in verse 14.4, are also expected to maintain purity and remain virgins. The use of male–female symbolism did not remain in the sexual realm. In other words, some of the dualism between the genders had "nothing to do with sex and bodies". For instance, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Characters Being Dead In The Song Of Solomon Song of Solomon Questions 1. The characters being "dead" in the text can be related to their race and/or their gender. Milkman can be seen as dead because he has no purpose in life; he doesn't seem to know what being black means like the other characters in the text do, and he doesn't realize how him being a man affects the females in the text. Most of the women are dead because they are left behind or controlled by the men in the story. They do not take their lives for their own, so they do not have one; they can be considered dead. However, Pilate could break this trend because unlike the other females she takes her life for herself and controls it. Later on in the story, Guitar can be seen as dead even though it's not apart of his name. He lets his life be controlled by anger and hunger. Despite him justifying his actions with the Seven Days as justice, he does this based on anger and cannot answer Milkman's questions on the ethical view of it. He also seeks to take the life of Milkman when he suspects he's run off with the gold. 2. The song in the novel gives insight on the background knowledge that Milkman is looking for about his family. The events that the song describes can also be applied to Milkman and the people around him. Those who know the Song of Solomon do not question Solomon flying off and leaving behind everyone. They are also quick to put Ryna in a bad light, naming her after a ditch and saying she could not live without a man. This is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Film I Will Be Evaluating A Sprawling Two Part Sex... The film I will be evaluating is Nymphomaniac a sprawling two–part sex drama that blurs the line between art and porn. It follows a sex addict named Joe as she's found battered in an alleyway by an older bachelor named Seligman. In explaining how she came to be in such a condition, flashback scenes unfold in chapters introduced by snapping witty dialogue between Joe and Seligman. It begins with Joe throughout her teenage years, when she first begins to discover her insatiable sexual appetite. Then through her adult life as she is pushed out of normal society. The film whips through a wide range of topics, such as gender role conformity, consent, and, metal dysfunction. To begin with Joe is a self–described nymphomaniac, which is a former term for excessive sexual desire in a woman, which may lead to promiscuous sexual behavior. Most psychologists have argued against the use of the term for year it's an antiquated and demeaning word used to denigrate sexual women. It is not a medical or psychiatric diagnosis. Her correct diagnosis is hypersexuality, which can apply to anyone, is not a true mental disorder, but a symptom of a much larger problem. I like the title and think it was a fascinating and intentional plot–related choice by Von trier, for this reason that Joe does display other issues like low self–esteem, loneliness, and, attachment avoidance. I like the title it made me think about how we use words. Furthermore, this movie is touted as a pro feminist love ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Ballad Of Sir Isaac Newton Research Paper The Ballad of Sir Isaac Newton by Love Varg offers a brief summary of the mathematician, astronomer and physicist Isaac Newton. It gives insight into his life including his date of birth, where he was raised, where he went to school, and much more. Quickly skimming through the life of Newton, the ideas and concepts within the poem can be expanded upon to discover who Isaac Newton truly was. The Ballad dives into his personal life, his life as a scientist, and his social life. While growing up, Isaac Newton seemed to be a regular kid. He had a family that was there for him while he was young: "Little Isaac mine was born/on the same day as our king / he could fit into a quarters mug, / his mother used to sing" (The Ballad of Sir Isaac Newton). ... These characteristics are what make him such a household name today. His laws are still taught in modern day physics and calculus is one of the fundamental classes taught in schools. • 5. The Peoples Temple The Peoples Temple began as a church that supported social equality and justice, but slowly changed into a prophetic movement; a network of individuals, tightly organized in a communal group that attaches its identity to charismatic leadership and the teachings of that leader. The movement's leader Jim Jones claimed to be the "God–sent prophet" . In order to expand, he later moved his congregation to California and eventually Guyana where he created the closed community of Jonestown. However, in 1978, members of Jonestown murdered Congressman Leo Ryan, and all residents of Jonestown committed suicide. The apocalyptic beliefs of the Peoples Temple shaped its identity and led to the murder of Congressman Ryan, this belief also marked its demise. By using apocalyptic literature, the book of Revelation, as reference, the actions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. This apocalyptic motif of good versus evil, and the salvation of the good not only shaped the identity of the Peoples Temple, but also framed the death of the organization. The belief of a battle between good and evil has always existed in the practices of the Peoples Temple. The Peoples Temple is an Alternative Religious Movement, which is an alternative religious group or organization that, typically, is separated from the larger society both in its theological beliefs and its practices of those beliefs. Indeed, when the Peoples Temple first emerged, Rebecca Moore described it saying: Demographic figures are uncertain, with one source claiming that the congregation was one–fifth African American by 1960, and another asserting it was more than fifty percent African American. • 6. Chronicle Of A Death Foretold By Gabriel Garcia Marquez Philosophy is a device for society to come to terms with themselves and what is beyond themselves. Nobel Prize–winning author, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, critiques the philosophy of a small river town in Columbia in his novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold. In this nameless town, religion holds the population in a tight grip, allowing ideas such as the restoration of purity to grow and cloud the morals of the public. Through the use of characterization, grotesque imagery, and symbolism, Marquez evokes a question of how beneficial the Catholic Church is to society. In Columbia, around 90% of the population belongs to the Catholic Church. This church, as seen in Chronicle of a Death Foretold, has been twisted by several corrupt authority figures. This includes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marquez characterizes him as an egotistical being who goes against Catholic beliefs. He wastes the food that has been granted to him by God, which contradicts the biblical verse,"And when they had eaten their fill, [Jesus Christ] told his disciples, 'Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost'" (John 6:12–14). This enforces the image of a corrupted figure in power and reveals the sin that surrounds the church in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Marquez further emphasizes the dysfunction and illusion of the divine power that the Catholic Church possesses by critiquing the blessings given by the bishop, such as when,"the bishop began to make the sign of the cross, crossed the square in the air opposite the crowd on the pier, and he kept on doing it mechanically afterwards" (17). • 7. The Apocalypse Of John 's Revelation The Apocalypse of John, otherwise known as the book of Revelation, is a climatic example of apocalyptic literature, ultimately ending with the end of the earthly world and the second coming of Christ. The final text dated around 95 CE, the author identifies himself as "John" in the first chapter of the book, causing many to believe that John the Apostle, who allegedly wrote the book of John, also authored this apocalyptic text; however, scholars agree that John the Apostle wrote no books of the New Testament, and therefore the author of Revelation is another unknown John (Ehrman 2014, 367). No matter the authorship, the book of Revelation poses many questions to biblical scholars, especially questions on what the symbolic texts means in historical context, and how the text should be interpreted by a contemporary, twenty–first century audience. In chapters 1–3 of Revelation, John depicts the setting in which he received the vision he is about to unveil. John was imprisoned on Patmos, a Greek island, when an angel came to him with an apocalyptic vision. The angel instructed him to write to seven churches about his vision, providing them information and urging them to heed his prophecy. John write to these churches, "Therefore write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after these things" (Revelation 1:19). John follows this basic outline throughout the entire book: he depicts the past and the present first, focusing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This was known as the Bavarian Illuminati. The goal of the Illuminati was to eliminate superstition, prejudice, and the Roman Catholic Church's domination over government, philosophy, and science; reduce abuse of state power, support the education and treatment of women as intellectual equals . Throughout time the Illuminati has undergone a change of philosophy. There are many examples in pop culture and in government symbols. The Bohemian Grove which is where the figure is located is considered a planning site of the Illuminati that is located in the Red Wood forest of Northern California. The Pentagram is also connected with the Illuminati. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson appointed a freemason to design the layout of Washington D.C. The layout of the streets makes a pentagram, although the pentagram is not quite completed . The number 666, which is the number of the Beast, is suggested to be a part of the Illuminati. It is also associated with the Anti–Christ, which would eventually take over the helm of the Illuminati. Another Illuminati symbol would be the eternal flame. The Statue of Liberty is a prime example of the eternal flame with her lighted torch. The Statue of Liberty is the pagan goddess, Semiramis, the whore of Babylon. She represents the destruction of the Old World Order and the creation of the New World Order . Another important symbol of the Illuminati is the skull. • 9. John Was Preaching Against Rome John was preaching against Rome in Revelation In the late first century a follower of Jesus of Nazareth, John of Patmos, received a vision of the end the world. John later wrote this vision down and his writing has come down to modernity as The Book of Revelation also known as The Apocalypse of John. When John wrote Revelation was he using it as a coded message to preach against Rome? In this vision, John saw many images that could be read as Rome or Roman if viewed from a historical context. Subsequent generations have interpreted the imagery within their own historical context. With this paper I will argue that Revelation pertains to the Roman world and culture that John and his followers were living in, the events in Judea that are thought to have occurred within his life time and that John used some of the same imagery to connect his writing to the Hebrew Bible. There are two main competing dates for the writing of Revelation, an early date of 69–70 and a later date of 90–92. This paper will be using the 69–70 date and will be providing evidence to prove why this date works better for the context of this paper. First this paper will establish the time frame in which John wrote Revelation. George H. van Kooten's article, The Year of the Four Emperors and the Revelation of John: The 'pro–Neronian' Emperors Otho and Vitellius, and the Images and Colossus of Nero in Rome, from Journal for the Study of the New Testament points, "In the midst of this war (in 68), ... Analyses of Race and Gender Issues in Othello The discussion of race in Shakespeare's Othello has received a great deal of critical attention. Virginia Mason Vaughn, in her book Othello: A Contextual History, surveys this critical history, beginning with Marvin Rosenberg's 1961 book The Masks ofOthello (a book documenting the nineteenth–century tendency toward representing Othello as light–skinned), and continuing through to Jack D'Amico's 1991 book The Moor in English Renaissance Drama. This expresses the reality of post–World War I as the film's introductory sequence draws upon German Expressionist elements presenting a low–angle of towering skyscrapers in Bauhaus design and abstract machinery. This artistic vivid and opulent setting contrasts with extreme close up of machines suggesting the collective power of movement parallel to the workers, as they operate machinery beneath the city in synchronicity. This disparity creates a defined hierarchical structure that juxtaposes the heightened sense of power experienced by the ruling elite with the worker's sense of loss of identity in the face of technological expansion. This extreme dichotomy exposes the innate fear of abuse of power within a capitalist framework as audiences perceived the potential of conformity to a totalitarian corporation, leading to dehumanisation of humanity. Further explored in the creation scene, the political perspective reveals how the over development of technology for progress, consequently results in abuse of power. This is developed as the machine man is displayed in a low angle shot underneath upside–down pentagram, the religious motif symbolic of how Rotwang proves to be usurping the powers of god, emphasising that through the abuse of power, technology has the ability to create a loss of identity leading to dehumanisation. He had solid Christian support throughout his campaign; at least so it seemed. Obviously, people of all sorts – Christian or not – Republican or not – were frustrated at the lack of options. I understand. I was one of them. People were also rightly concerned about Hillary. They were left with a choice of either Armageddon or slow rot. Much was at stake – especially the Supreme Court. I was in a unique place of one who has just discovered that the candidate I might have begrudgingly voted for voted for was, in fact, The Antichrist; a scenario that elevates such decisions to another dimensional reality. After I had shared my thoughts regarding Trump with several Christians supporting him, I often got the question posed to me: "Well, who do we vote for?" As far as I was concerned, the vote was already cast. I knew the outcome. I would often tell people, "If you want to vote for Trump, vote for Trump. You will be voting for the winner." The voting thing for me was not much of an issue because Trump's win was predestined. The book is Revelation is also known as "The Revelation of John" and "St. Johns Apocalypse." The Book of Revelation is the primary source of inspiration of Christian prophecy believers. The last book and only apocalypse in the New Testament, it was likely written in the last decade of the first century, during a period of great turmoil after the destruction of the second Jewish Temple by the Romans in 70 A.D. Biblical scholars are sceptical of the historical claim that the Apostle John was its author. Millions of Christians have taken the events so vividly described in Revelation as a blueprint for what will happen in the last days as God brings an end to this world. But beyond that, many ideas and symbols from Revelation have found a place in the wider culture, including: the Mark of the Beast, represented by the number "666;" the seven seals; the four horsemen of the Apocalypse; the Whore of Babylon; and the ... With an unknown author, apocalyptic foreshadowing, and obscure meanings, it has been interpreted a number of different ways. Starting with the history, the symbolism, and ways to interpret it, the aim of this paper is to give the reader a better understanding of the book. We know for a fact that the book was written by John to the seven churches of Asia Minor "I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and kingdom and patience that are in Jesus, was on the island which is called Patmos, because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus." Revelations 1:9–10 There is speculation that John was imprisoned on Patmos for the crime of not worshiping the Roman emperor. It is a popular tradition for many to believe John the apostle to be the author of revelation, however the writer of revelation never claimed to be an apostle. The literary form in this book is called "apocalyptic" writing. This means that the book is not straight forward in delivering its message. The actual message is concealed in symbols, numbers, and images. It is also considered a prophecy by Catholics. This is stated in Revelation 1:3. "Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep the things that are written therein; for the time is at hand." (Rev. 11:6). This connection between blood and the beginning of the plague are a key theme throughout Revelations, and have continued in modern literature through zombieism and AIDS. Although the End is usually spoken about within the idea of naturalistic destruction on Earth, the End may be more human than that and come unexpectedly from humanity itself: "They are frightening for the very reason that they do not look like our enemies at all... they look disturbingly like our co–workers, neighbours, friends and families" (Dendle 50); "they" being the key term. This directly connects to AIDS and the idea of the "general population", which can be explained as "not just whites but heterosexuals" (Sontag 67). Long goes into detail of why this is, explaining that "homosexuality itself [had already been made out to be] a contagious disease; an apocalyptic signifier, a sign of 'end times'," (2) so when the 'epidemic' of AIDS hit, the "general population" believed that it was "punishment for not living God's way", and further emphasized their "other–ness" by mentioning its spread in South Africa. It was created at a time when Europe anticipated the "Last Judgement", as Germany was experiencing plagues, religious debates, and peasant movements towards the end of the 15th century. The medium used for an engraving is metal and is created using an intaglio method. Unlike the relief process of printmaking, this process is a positive one. The artist scratches the image onto the metal plate, inks the surface of it, and wipes it clean. As a result, ink is placed into the carved out drawing. Next, the plate is run through a roller press which causes the ink to absorb to the paper. The difference in appearance between a relief print and an intaglio print is because of essentially drawing the image to be created onto the metal plate for an intaglio print. Also cross–hatching, the use of fine parallel lines to create the illusion of shade, allowed for more subtle shading in the engraving. This engraving portrays the melancholy personality of artists and Durer, himself. It is suggested that the winged figure represents Durer because of the location of his monogram or logo underneath the bench that figure is sitting on. Her pondering stance represents an artistic genius who is looking for inspiration, but cannot find it, therefore experiences despair in her/himself. The winged child sitting to the left of the winged female, represents anxiety that the uninspired artist could be experiencing. In addition, in the upper left corner, a bat is found with the words "melencholia" beside it. The bat represents melancholy because it only appears or comes out at night and is linked with the darkness. Durer contrasts melancholy and the light of inspiration by associating this bat in the dark sky with rays of light. The harlots of the ancient world "offered their bodies and sexual services for payment," enhancing the view that Babylon is a great prostitute who engages with the kings of the earth. Nahum 3:4 and Isaiah 23:17 both allude to a city committing "fornication with [the] nations,." which then leads to divine judgment, emphasizing that this woman's great and abhorrent sin in the eyes of the Lord will not go unpunished. 3–4: John's transport into the wilderness alludes to ... The name Babylon the Great is a direct reference from Daniel 4:30, which marks the "extend of Nebuchadnezzar's power" that he so boastfully pronounces. Stereotypes and stigmas are attached to everyone and everything. The first thought that an individual may affiliate with when seeing "Beauty and the Beast" is Disney. "Beauty and the Beast" by Beaumont was created with a twist that doesn't have the fairy tale touch you usually see in a Disney movie. Although this short story may have its similarities to Disney's rendition, The Beauty and the Beast is far from being the same. This story, "Beauty and the Beast", shows readers that your first thought to an idea may not be the right one. One must look deeper into an idea to find the true intentions of it; it gives a deeper look into morals. In continuation, there are various parts throughout the story where the main idea keeps being introduced. For example, when Beast is first introduced he is portrayed as an irrational monster for threatening the father with death over a flower. In reality, he isn't the antagonist here because the Beast accommodated the father and without hesitation made him his guest. He had already given him much of his hospitality, so he felt disrespected that the father, on his way out, would still be in need of more. Another example that supports this main idea is when Beauty initially arrives to the castle and is automatically intimidated by the Beast and its looks. People were also concerned about Hillary, and rightly so. They were left with a choice of Armageddon or slow rot. So much is at stake – especially the Supreme Court. I myself was in sort of an odd place. For me, the vote was cast already. I knew who was going to win. I'd often tell people, "If you want to vote for Trump, vote for Trump. You'll be voting for the winner." The voting thing for me wasn't much of an issue. It's no big secret that the evangelical community played a role in Trump's success at the polls. He had pretty decent support throughout his campaign; at least so it seemed. I want to address the chapter in Revelation that describes the whore of Babylon – specifically – how it relates to the religious aspects of this "woman". There are two chapters designated to this subject: Revelation 17 and 18. Chapter 18 seems to focus more on some international commercial center. I've suggested that this may be a rebuilt Iraq that becomes a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Music And Cinema Music The music selected for silent films is an important process that can affect the audience's experience. Many films rely on music to enhance the action on screen and assist in telling the story. Emilio Audissino places music selection into two basic categories for silent film music: the first being "cinema music," which acts as a silence filler for the viewer, and the second is "film music," with the goal to assist the film's narrative. For many silent films. the music is primarily cinema music. However, there are some silent films that rely heavily on music to help convey the action on screen. Metropolis (1927) is one such film, which used music scored specifically for it. Gottfried Huppertz began composing the leitmotifs for the score during the early stages of the production of Metropolis. He created each character's leitmotif through interactions with the actors, thus strengthening the music's relationship to the film's story. Audissino writes, "He would be on the set to develop the themes for each character as they took form in front of the cameras, and played parts of the music for the actors to bring them into the proper mood." Huppertz's music became an integral part of the film and decades later would assist in its restoration. When his original score was replaced with music from other composers, this affected the film's narrative. Although other scores could convey the general atmosphere of the film, they lacked the specific emotional connections of Huppertz's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Book Of Revelation The Profound Influence of The Book of Revelation The Book of Revelation is the most central one in the New Testament as it is the only apocalyptic document in Christian eschatology. Its author, John, describes a series of prophetic visions, including the stories of the Whore of Babylon and the Beast came out of the sea. The Book of Revelation reaches its most important part in the Second Coming of Jesus. This essay will discover the meaning and historical background of the Book of Revelation, its importance and influence on Christianity, the lives and hardship of Christians in the 1st century, and the different interpretations of the Book of Revelation. First, it's important to examine the meaning of the Book of Revelation itself. The Book ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the first chapter of Revelation, "I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus" (REV 1:9), it can be known that John was on an island named Patmos when he wrote this book. The Patmos Island was mentioned at the end of the New Testament. It is a small island in the Aegean Sea, about ninety kilometers west of Miletus. "It was in this lonely, desolate place where a man named 'John' wrote the remarkable Book of Revelation in the last decade of the first century." Paying attention to how the island was described: lonely, desolate, I conducted some research and found that the Patmos Island is barren, rocky, almost with no trees. For an authoritarian Roman emperor who demanded absolute submission, based on the description of the island, the best way to utilize this island is is to exile people who disrupt the order of the emperor. Therefore, my guess is that John was exiled to this island of Patmos. And the words–"suffering" and "endurance"–confirm my guess. John was exiled to the isolated island because of the persecution of Christians under Domitian, the Roman emperor. The Book of Revelation was written in a time period under the reign of Domitian who was famous for his persecution of Christians. "It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Faerie Queene Essay Edmund Spenser's epic poem The Faerie Queene is well known as an allegorical work, and the poem is typically read in relation to the political and religious context of the time. The term allegory tends to be loosely defined, rendering a whole work an extended metaphor, or even implying "any writing in verse or prose that has a double meaning"(Cuddon 20). In true Spenserian style, with everything having double meanings, both uses of the term allegory are applicable to his writing. Thus, during the course of this essay it is best not to think of allegory in terms of the size of a body of writing, but as writing with a "second distinct meaning partially hidden behind its literal or visible meaning"(Baldick 6). They are both introduced as secondary characters, making them supplementary to the men they are introduced with. Spenser's rich allegory allows readers to draw meaning from most of his writing, and it is because of this that the characters with whom Una and Duessa are traveling can help readers to interpret their allegory. Una is introduced only three stanzas after the Red Crosse Knight, but the diction of the opening line "A lovely lady rode him faire beside"(42), immediately tells readers she is currently an accessory to the Knight. Likewise when Duessa is introduced Spenser omits to mention her name, simply stating Sansfoy "had a faire companion of his way"(58). The first mention of both characters is almost identical; they are both described with exactly the same adjective, "faire", and as completing the same action of accompanying a man on his travels. It is because of this sameness that it becomes important to draw judgment of Una and Duessa's characters by their peers. With Spenser choosing to say little of them initially, both the Red Crosse Knight and Sansfoy become indicators of Una and Duessa's identities respectively. The Red ... A castle full of expensive housewares and beautiful ladies wearing white gowns dancing to the music represent perfection. The ball is interrupted by a knock from an unexpected beggar who offered the insensitive prince a rose for shelter. The loud thunderclap and the way the chandelier lights were blown off by the wind intensified the scene. When he refuses, the beggar transformed into an enchantress and changed him into a hideous beast and his servants into housewares. The camera angle which showed the shadow figure of the prince turning to a beast was amazingly done. She casts a spell on the rose and it would only be broken if he could learn to love another and earn their love in return by the time the last petal fell. • 34. How Does Nathaniel Hawthorne Use Biblical Allusions In The... Throughout the Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses several biblical allusions to emphasize the Puritan society this novel was set in and give the reader a comparison of Hester to biblical figures, both holy and unholy. The Puritan society was one of strict adherence to the Bible and its teachings; consequently, Hester's sin is not easily forgiven. Through his use of biblical allusions Hawthorne provides the reader with a historical figure that portrays characteristics or aspects similar to that of Hester. Hester's curious child, Pearl, is both a blessing and a curse. She completely changed the course of Hester's life, at a great price. This is comparable to the pearl of great price, mentioned in Matthew 13:45 – 46. The pearl of great price refers to a man who would give up everything for a pearl, similar to Hester and her conveniently named child. From the moment Hester became pregnant with Pearl, she gave up her life, becoming an outcast, and being forced to live apart from the society. It was a great price for Hester to pay, but a mother's love is one of the strongest things on this Earth, and that can be seen through her actions. • 35. Comparing Revelation On The Relationship Of Church And State Paper 1: Comparing Revelation to Eusebius on the Relationship of Church and State After reading chapters twelve through thirteen and seventeen through nineteen from the book of Revelation, I have attained knowledge that allows me to see how the author of Revelation perceives the Roman Empire. From the beginning of chapter twelve it is clearly portrayed that the woman who is in the sky, about to give birth, is meant to symbolize Mary the mother of Jesus, or even Israel, the birthplace of Jesus. The Dragon of course, represents Satan. When the Dragon is thrown down to Earth due to its repulsive actions of trying to harm the woman's baby, it decides to make war against the faithful Christians. As the story progresses in chapter thirteen, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Overall, the Roman Empire is perceived as an evil given its unruly authority and power from Satan himself. Rome's relationship with Satan (the Dragon) is viewed as a partnership. Satan and the Roman Empire both wanted to persecute Christians, and Satan provided Rome with the opportunity to do so by giving them such power and authority over everything. "Men worshipped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they all worshiped the beast"(Revelation 13:4 New International Version). Although Rome pretty much had this partnership with Satan, God/Jesus was and is still in control and that's what chapter nineteen in the book of Revelation reassures for its readers. "After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting"(Revelation 19:1 New International Version). This is a victory song and also assurance to the persecuted Christians of Asia Minor that God is still in control and always will be and that everything will fall into place when the time is right and when he plans for it to. God defeated the "whore of Babylon" and therefore defeated the Roman Empire once and for all. I believe that there were major social and historical factors that played a crucial role in influencing the writing of the book of Revelation due to the fact that there was so much past heat between Christians and the Roman Empire. • 37. The Goddesses : The Gods Distinctly, the goddesses designated in this chapter occur in the midst of the earliest pagan deities indicated in numerous ancient writings; particularly, the ones frequently linked to the land of Canaan. In fact, several of the goddesses that promoted idolatry and prostitution exist unequivocally in the King James Version of the Bible, such as Ashtoreth, Diana and Lilith. Although, the word 'prostitute' exists merely once (Lev 19:29), still, prostitution happens to become identified with various words; such as "whore(s), whoredom(s), harlot(s), pollute or polluted;" (which can mean prostitute) that encounters being referenced frequently. Intrinsically, the prophets of the Bible caution against whoring after the other gods and goddesses; whereby, the cult prostitutes developed among the numerous idols the Israelites lusted after. In addition, the term 'goddess' takes place only five times in the manuscript; however, there occurs various terminology used to reference her high existence. The word abomination(s) has several meanings, but essentially leans toward disgust. Conspicuously, Joseph Campbell in the "Power of Myth," with Bill Moyers states, "The term for the Canaanite goddess that occurs in the Old Testament is [abomination]." (The word appears 152 times, with additional variations.) In addition, from the beginning to the end the Bible's reference on the abomination evokes an unclean association with someone or something outside their belief in God's holiness. In ... • 39. Essay on Feminism and Chauvinism in Beauty And The Beast Beauty and the Beast is a wonderful children's movie, its directed by: Gary Trousdale, and Kirk Wise, and produced by: Don Hahn. Disney is the main sponsor and gives the movie the best cast of artist and musicians. Who would except anything else from Disney, they are the best at children's films. At the same time, Disney succeeds in teaching our children a very vital lesson in life, how good looks and fame is not the key to true love. Which is created throughout the movie of Beauty and the Beast released in 1991 with the most sincere reviews and touching style. After all, this is just the first scene in the movie. Meanwhile, as Belle is finishing her walk through the chauvinistic town, Justin jumps in font of her grasping the book she was peacefully reading and says "Its not right for a women to read then they start to get ideas and thinking." If this were a statement made by a stubborn political figure back in the 1800's I would understand because that was just how things tend to work back then. However, this is a movie written in the 1990's for children to watch seventy years after women got the vote and were recognized to be equal to men. Nonetheless, I probably doubt that most children who view this movie look at it in a chauvinistic way but if they did recognize the feminism towards women it would upset them. Adults on the other hand, pick up on these inessential parts of the movie and are struck with disappointment. As I viewed the movie and realized what was actually going on it hurt me to think that in such an innocent movie things of this nature take place.
