I. Introduction A comprehensive Christian theory of counseling integrates the disciplines of
theology, psychology, and Scripture. In providing a holistic approach in to counseling individuals, it
is prudent to survey one's mind, body, soul, temporal systems, and super natural systems, in which
all influence the person. A more complete plan of care may be offered when the contributions from
both psychology and theology are offered. "The best interdisciplinary integration work usually
comes from those who have formal or informal preparation in both psychology and theology"

B. Motivation Crabb (1977) suggest that motivation is a natural and universal drive to meet ones
needs and is a compelling component of personality. Many factors contribute to one's behavior, such
as one's past, ethnicity, culture, religious upbringing, abuse history, family of origin, education, and
illness (physical or mental) (Wilson, 2001). "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy–laden
and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest [I will erase and relieve and refresh your souls.]"
(Matthew 11:28, Amplified). Anderson (2000) asserts, based on Ephesians 2:1, that man is born into
the world alive physically but spiritually dead. God must be in the core of one's personality to live
and experience true fullness of life and health.
C. Human Development Human development is a life long process, which is ever changing in body,
mind, and spirit (Adams, 1986).
Crabb (1977) believes a Christian counselor helps one to grow into Christ like maturity, this is done
though "1) immediate obedience in specific situations and
2) long–rang character growth" (p. 25).

The image of God in man is a doctrine that is fundamental to understanding the soteriological
implications of humanity, which is best understood through the examination of Christ's humanity
with regards to various views held.

Meaning, the more intellectual one is, the more like God they are. Since there is no biblical evidence
that the image varies within individuals, this view cannot be logically supported.
The Relational View
The next view is the relational view. This view asserts that the image of God is the capacity to hold a
relationship, particularly with God. This way of thinking is formed out of the fact that the Godhead
has relationship within itself. This is found in Genesis 1:26, where God says, "Let us make man in
our image." This agrees with Karl Barth's belief that within the Godhead the Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit experience relationship. Furthermore, man experiences relationship with one another and with
God. This very aspect is interpreted as being the image of God.
This view accurately displays the biblical truth that humanity is the only created being out of all of
creation that has the ability to commune with God. However, issues arise explaining the relational
view when one does not believe in God. Can one say they are still image bearers? Emil Brunner
answers this by saying that one is always in some sort of relationship with God, regardless of belief.
The Functional View
The last of the main views held states that the image of God is actually something the human does;

My Worldview : My Worldview
My worldview begins from with a biblical view. What does it mean to be human? Genesis 1:27 says,
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female
created he them" (KJV). Because we were made in the image of God, it is in his Word that we will
find the answer to what it means to be human. Jesus Christ is the source of our true identity and
nature. Romans 8:29 speaks of "being conformed to the image of his Son." Our purpose originally
was to love and fellowship with God. Through the disobedience of Adam and Eve, the sin factor
entered the equation and made humanity prone to sin. When Christ came to earth and died for our
sins, he created the opportunity to be redeemed from those sins. It is only through his grace that we
are able to be reconciled with him. If we drift in life, our human sin nature causes us to drift away
from God. Therefore, we must purpose in our hearts and in our actions to live a life free of sin and in
relationship with the Almighty. When a person lives a repentant life and in daily relationship with
the Almighty, it brings an individual back to his or her original purpose, to love and fellowship with
God. This, then, opens the door to the promises and the miraculous of the Word of God. For
instance, Matthew 11:28 promises that if you simply come to Christ, he will give you rest.
Philippians 4:19 promises that God will meet all of your needs. 1 Peter 2:24 mentions a supernatural

Differences Between Feminist Theology And Christian Theology
If one were to ask ten modern day theologians to define the word "theology," it is likely that they
would hear ten different answers. Even within the various types of theology, for example, Christian
theology, there are a wide spectrum of attitudes and beliefs. Even more so, if one were to compare
evangelical theology with feminist theology, the differences would add up quickly. Two modern day
theologians, Stanley Grenz and Catherine Keller, well known in their respective fields, have
approached their theology from different backgrounds. The most obvious is the difference in gender.
However, their theological methodologies, the definition, and nature of their theological goals and
their approach to being biblically faithful are vastly different. By careful examination, these two
theologians and their specific ideologies in relating to evangelical theology and feminist theology
will influence how a person approaches their own theology.
Considered a "prolific theologian," Stanley Grenz was a leader among evangelical theologians
(Warner, 2005, p. 42). Author of a multitude of books on diverse subject matters including
eschatology, ethics, Trinity, and homosexuality, Grenz initially defended his Baptist customs
(Warner, 2005). However, considered as his greatest contribution, was his ability to bridge the
evangelicals from their own world of thought to "engage the larger scholarly world" (Warner, 2005,

This story is about a man giving a gift that is intended to show gratitude to a stranger's good deed
that moved him years ago. An old woman with her two grandchildren went to the supermarket for
some groceries. The little boy and girl accompanied their grandmother, helping her out with some
groceries. While the little girl was picking a few things at the market, her grandmother told her that
the items she had chosen were not necessarily, although, the grandmother told her granddaughter to
choose something special for her grandfather since it was his birthday, while he was home waiting
for them to come back with the groceries. The little girl picked up a cake from the pastry section and
ran to the counter where her grandmother and brother were waiting, ready to check out. When the
cashier added the cake to the other items it made the grocery purchase higher than the money they
had in hand, so the grandmother pleaded with the cashier to void the cake out of her transaction. The

My faith tradition informs my theology of pastoral care as that a pastor has an authority in the
pastoral care relationship. The pastor's image in my faith tradition is an advisor, director, and guide.
In my faith tradition, the lay people like to have the pastoral care, when they make important
decisions. Since my culture is the hierarchal and patriarch system, the lay people believes that
pastors are better to know about God's will. Therefore, the lay people are too much depending on the
pastor's advices, and taking pastor's perspective, rather than choosing what they want. There is no
space to listen their inner voice in the pastoral care in my faith tradition. My theology of pastoral
care in my faith tradition was that what Jesus did is what we should do. Because of my traditional
ideal of pastoral care, I thought pastors have to know everything and be better than others until
becoming like Jesus. However, I realized that the theology can be dangerous to look down the lay
people and non–Christians, and is not helpful for the pastors and the lay people as well. I think it is
important to remember in my tradition that the head of the church is the only one, Jesus, and we are

I ask a lot of questions; I'm a curious person. I once asked my mom why people die, why there are
bad things in the world if God is so good and all–powerful. Her response was that we just couldn't
really understand why God does anything because we can't comprehend God's "master plan." I'm
sure that she was right, but that response is not very satisfying to a curious little boy. I saw an
inconsistency in my understanding of reality, and I wanted to get things straight.

Once one has that understanding (or "model"), one then does one's best to live in a way consistent
with that model and perhaps in the process, persuade others of your world view.
Before going back to my own story though, I just wanted to clarify the difference between
inconsistency and simplification. I feel that it is possible to simplify a complex idea without it being
necessarily inconsistent. I could simplify the weather in two ways. I could say that direct sunlight
makes it warmer outside. I could also say that sunny days are warmer than cloudy days. Both
models of the weather are simplifications of a very complex system.
However, my first one is consistent with my experience since sunlight usually makes me feel
warmer than when there is no sunlight. Saying that sunny days are warmer than cloudy days is not
always true though. Therefore simplification doesn't necessitate inconsistency.
Now since I've set up my view of models and life, I can tell my story, using these ideas as a
framework for understanding my life. I think that in telling my story, I can communicate my ideas
without being technical, philosophical, or lecturing. Maybe it will be effective, maybe not. I'll find
personal enjoyment just in telling my story though, and maybe some ideas will be persuasive in an

There will be eternal reward and consequences beyond residency in heaven. The judgment time is
called the Bema Seat of Christ or judgment seat of Christ. That day of reckoning is described in the
following three passages: 1 Corinthians 3:12–15, 2 Corinthians 5:10, and Romans 14:10–12. These

form of judgment or reckoning to reward the steward if he was faithful in the management of the

One Branch Of Faith Is Assenting
One branch of faith is assenting. Comprised of "knowledge, trust, and acceptance," it is the standard
faith that most Christians think about. Thomas Aquinas, the Doctor of the Church, was and is a
brilliant theologian. His work, the Summa Theologica, is unmatched in depth and wisdom. Through
it, Aquinas wrote a masterful detailed overview of all theology. In the Summa Theologica, Thomas
Aquinas defines this faith as "an infused virtue by reason of which we accept on God's authority
what he has revealed to us" (Nature and Grace, Aquinas). In other words, faith is within us and by it
we accept what God has revealed to us.
However, there is another aspect of faith. As Rich Lusk says in his book, Paedofaith: A Primer on

The Parable Of The Good Samaritan
There was an article written by John Darley and Daniel Batson, who was inspired from the parable
of the Good Samaritan and decided to organize a research to test the limits of people's good will
towards something. Later they also published their research results in a paper in the year of 1973,
titled "From Jerusalem to Jericho." The history of the parable of the Good Samaritan was quite
interesting. The research was conducted based on 3 different hypotheses which they thought might
influence people's helping behavior. One of the hypotheses was that, people that were thinking in
terms of religious would have any effect on helping others. Second one was that people that are in a
rush will be less likely to offer any help to others compared to the ones that are not in a rush. And
the third one is that, people who are religious, more in a Samaritan fashion, would be more like offer
aid than those of a priest or more of a Levite fashion.
Instead of just analyzing scripture, the researchers put the participants randomly into various
conditions, such as causing some of them to rush somewhere and others to take their time to go to
that same place; making people think from a religious point of view and for others it was not quite
necessary. For the study, both researchers chose participants from the Princeton Theological

of Biblical Counseling. Adams makes three striking claims in his anti–psychiatry movement in
support of counseling being a pastoral call versus a psychological practice. First, he claims that
modern psychological theories perpetuate bad theology and misinterpret life's problems. Secondly,
he claims that psychotherapeutic professions are a false pastorate embarking upon tasks that

Regarding doctrine, Adams says that exposing clients to biblical teaching provides them with
practical implications for living. The second step is reproof, wherein the Holy Spirit brings
conviction to the lives of individuals through the witness of the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit not only
leads the client to repentance, but also works through the counselor as a reflection of the love of
God. The third step is correction and involves the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the lives of
individuals to help them stand upright and bear fruit indicative of the repentance that has taken place
in their lives. The final step is instruction in righteousness, which pertains to the disciplined lifestyle
wherein clients exercise a life of godliness. During this step, clients are held accountable for their

Balance of Theology and Spirituality Adams's model of biblical counseling is steeped in reformed

The Belief That Adam And Eve
The belief that Adam and Eve along with other Biblical figures did not exist historically is one that
is growing in prominence as people begin to question the extent to which the creation account in the
Bible ought to be taken as a historical account considering other ancient Mesopotamian creation
accounts. Many find the possibility that Adam did not exist to be a challenging one but it is
important to acknowledge that Christianity is not dependent on the existence of Adam (Lamoureux,
89) but on faith in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Just as the portrayal of the three–tiered universe seen
in Genesis is often rejected today on understanding that the Holy Spirit spoke to the author of
Genesis in a way that both he and the audience of the day would understand, it is possible that the
account of Adam and creation of the first couple is to be valued for it's etiological significance as
opposed to it's historical accuracy (Lamoureux, 84). The de novo understanding of creation, which
asserts that the earth was created quickly, was the scientific view that was popular in the time of the
ancient Hebrews, just as evolution has become the popular belief today. That being said, if one
chose to believe that Adam and Eve were not historical figures, this would present a problem with
regards to the concept of original sin. Though the question of creationism versus evolutionism
solicits a choice, the dichotomy of evolution versus creation, which is often portrayed, is one that is

Integration Model Psychology
The Levels of Explanation view is concern with understanding human using levels. It tries to
explain things through a hierarchal concept and that each level is separate from each other. They are

God created the heavens and the earth and is a personal being who cares about that which God
created. (Stiver, 115; Gen. 1:31) God is both great and good; God is both transcendent and perfectly
good beyond humanity's capability of goodness. God is both completely other and yet, individually
present in a loving and relational manner. (Olson, 129) From the account given in Genesis, it can be
seen that creation is a personal act of grace on the part of God. God provides life to humanity as a
free gift. Creation was a voluntary sharing of the joy that God already possesses. (Stiver, 115) God
desires close fellowship with humanity and continues to seek relationship with humanity. As
humanity fails and turns to evil and suffering, God continues in judgment and grace to seek
relationship with humanity by creating covenant with humanity. (Stiver, 117) Thus, God is love.
God is good, and as shown through scripture, humanity is created in the image of God and thus,
humanity is good. In saying this, I do not believe humanity to be perfect. Humanity was not created
perfect, but instead was created so that humanity required growth in order to approach spiritual
perfection or relationship with God. Though this growth can occur through tragedy, God does not
necessarily intend evil to provide a means for this growth because a person can grow to gain a

influenced by Wesleyan theology, without even realizing it. This embedded theology continues to be
refined through an ever–deepening understanding of scripture, experience, traditions and with the

While being both three and one, the Triune God is both accessible to us through relationship and
more expansive than we can fathom. Having experienced both God's nearness and distance in my
own life, I am comfortable with the mystery of God. My own relationship with the Divine is
sustained through prayer, worship, study, sacrament, vocation, relationships and acts of justice.
Throughout my life, especially during more challenging experiences, I felt God nearby, present, and
engaged in my life, especially through communion. At other times, God feels more distant, more
mysterious, and more unavailable. This ebb and flow in my relationship with God allows me to be
comfortable with God being three in one and both immanent and transcendent. I also experience
God in moments of tension, when caught between two seemingly distant paradigms. By
acknowledging the mystery of God, I am able to have a relationship with God, while God remains
infinite and beyond full human comprehension.
I believe that God created the world and continues to remain active and responsive to the world as it
is. God is, first and foremost, loving. As both Father and Mother, God seeks to be in relationship
with the world and calls the church toward a vision of creation that is beautiful, diverse, just, and
good. God remains with us, even when we turn away and sin. God's love is greater than we can ever
imagine.

It was not a formal counseling session. He prayed with me and made me meditate on Philippians
4:4–6 (NIV) "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all
understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." He showed me reasons why I need
to pray in my situation. The Holy Spirit made me know I felt disappointed in God (sin). I thought I
could pray and He has to answer all prayers (pride). I meditated on Romans 12:3 (NIV) "...do not
think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in
accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you." I confessed my sin of overrating my
self–opinion, received new grace through humility referred to in II Chronicles 7:14 (NIV) "If my
people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn
from their wicked ways...," for the healing of my soul. According to McMinn (2011), spirituality
redirects us from illusion of competence, pride, and exaggerated self–opinion to help us admit our

As a future minister, I recognize the importance in understanding my theological perspective which
has an effect on my understanding of the role as a minster and particularly the role of preaching.
One's personal theology affects the neurological wiring in one's brain which unconsciously
influences decisions and actions. There are specific theological views that I believe shape my
understanding of a minister's role as well as preaching. One particular theological view that shapes
how I understand the role of a minister and shapes my homiletic process is also a doctrinal belief of
my denomination that I wholly subscribe to. This tenant is referred to in the reformed tradition as
"priesthood of all believers." What that means is that I believe Jesus is a gift from God and it is the
responsibility of all those who claim to be Christians to minster to others. This effects my preaching
as I am consciously aware of my sermon's ability to help others view me as someone who is on this
journey with them, who happens to have more expertise in biblical studies guiding them, but who is
not belittling them. Lucy Atkins Rose suggests keeping a sermon conversational, and this is a way in
which I find myself striving towards in my homiletical approach. I believe this method offers a more

Dr. Jack Kennedy, Director of Cobb & Douglas Public County Health, started Good Samaritan

The Importance Of Youth Ministry
The education of youth is important because all our thinking and action should begin with God.
Because young people are highly relational, Christian doctrine is critical for effective youth
ministry. To study Jesus is to learn about good relationships and how to relate. Relevant youth
ministry must copy His style and the way He ministered to others. An educational based youth
ministry to young people points to the person of Jesus Christ: his life, teachings and work for us.
The best way to transfer information, skills, and biblical values to young people so they may be
effective Christian decision makers is to emphasize the critical thinking–the ability to "learn how to
learn." Those of us in youth ministry should understand and employ these techniques in educational
ministries. With critical thinking skills, young people will have the tools they need to successfully

Genesis 1:27 says, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them" (KJV). Because we were made in the image of God, it is in his Word that we will find the answer to what it means to be human. Jesus Christ is the source of our true identity and nature. Romans 8:29 speaks of "being conformed to the image of his Son." Our purpose originally was to love and fellowship with God. Through the disobedience of Adam and Eve, the sin factor entered the equation and made humanity prone to sin. When Christ came to earth and died for our sins, he created the opportunity to be redeemed from those sins. It is only through his grace that we are able to be reconciled with him. If we drift in life, our human sin nature causes us to drift away from God. Therefore, we must purpose in our hearts and in our actions to live a life free of sin and in relationship with the Almighty. When a person lives a repentant life and in daily relationship with the Almighty, it brings an individual back to his or her original purpose, to love and fellowship with God.
