The document discusses the history of customs and border protection in the United States. It notes that the U.S. customs service was established in 1789 to collect tariffs on imported goods. Over subsequent decades and centuries, additional agencies were formed within the Treasury Department to collect taxes, enforce trade regulations, and protect borders and coastlines. These agencies eventually merged and reorganized into today's Customs and Border Protection agency, which aims to facilitate trade while enforcing customs laws and securing the nation's borders.

Customs And Trade
1. customs and trade
Customs and Trade Much of the history of international relations and trade concerns efforts to
promote free trade among nations. The 17th century saw the growth of restrictive policies that later
came to be known as mercantilism. The mercantilists held that economic policy should be
nationalistic and should aim at securing the wealth and power of the state. Governments were led to
impose price and wage controls, promote exports of finished goods and imports of raw materials,
and prohibit the exports of raw materials and the import of finished goods. In the middle of the 18th
century a strong reaction against mercantilist attitudes began. In France, the economists demanded
liberty of production and trade. In England, Adam Smith ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It has brought immense gains for consumers in terms of new products and products of better quality
and lower price. Despite the obvious advantages, governments have to explain to their citizens the
advantages of the open, rules–based trading system and that the trade with either developed or
developing countries offers enormous opportunities and, as with all trade, mutual benefits. The
Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), from its inception, contributes
to the expansion of world trade on a multilateral, non–discriminating basis. The OECD helps the
WTO move forward on trade liberalization, stressing the importance of ensuring that non–OECD
countries become fully integrated into the global trading system. The importance, and inevitability,
of change has been stressed in many aspects of OECD work, including the OECD Job Study. The
main aim is to improve job prospects. The OECD also has an important role to play in recognizing

traditional issues of trade between national economies to meet the demands of a globalizing one.
Investment issues are at the forefront; firms invest to trade and trade to invest. The old model of

manufacture assembly, finishing and marketing, which leapfrogs national boundaries. A change

Custom–House, in order to not only introduce his prior autobiographical writing, but describe how
he came about creating his novel. In the Custom–House, the narrator works as a surveyor in the
Salem Custom–House. He is surrounded by an aged group of workers, who pass time by sleeping
and repeating various stories of their lives as sailors. The narrator, who believes his life and job are
becoming rather frivolous, stumbles across a document that seemed to be untouched by humans for
a large period of time. It was an "idle and rainy day" when Hawthorne discovered what he explains
to be the Scarlet Letter. He is wandering through the second story of the Custom–House and finds

occurrences and past events of the life of a woman named Hester Prynne. Pue writes about how she
lived her life as a voluntary nurse, carrying out as much good as possible in her life. As Hawthorne
digs deeper into the documents he found, he discovers more stories of the woman, the author
referring to the Scarlet Letter several times throughout his writings. Hawthorne lastly describes his
feelings about what to do next with the package he found. He ponders over the stories of Hester
Prynne, believing that the stories are the doorway to creating his own novel. He even elucidates how
he felt as if Surveyor Pue's ghost emphatically urged him to share the information with the public.
Nathaniel Hawthorne eventually does share his information through his own words, in the novel he
constructs, titled The Scarlet

3. U.s. Customs And Border Protection
U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents faced a lot of challenges when they attempt to secure
our borders, they need to ensure that the borders are secure while at the same time not violating
peoples' constitutional rights. Another challenge that CBP agents face is that with our open borders
agreement of NAFTA with our neighboring countries of Mexico and Canada, it makes it impossible
for agents to search every single person and vehicle crossing the border because it would disrupt the
flow of commerce, which would have a huge negative impact in the economy of border towns and
factories across the U.S. The functional equivalents of the border help U.S. Customs and Border
Protection ensure that everything or anyone that leaves or enters the U.S. through another point of
entry(POE) other than land border does it under the border legal regulations and laws established
(Kim, 2009). This helps the U.S. ensure that it can collect all of its revenue and apprehend those
persons who are coming or leaving the U.S. for the wrong reasons or cargo that can threaten the
safety of the American people. The Fourth amendment creates a big challenge when it comes to
border security, therefore the U.S. Supreme Court decided to create a fourth amendment exception
to all points of entry (POE), which includes land borders, functional equivalents of the border, and
sea ports among others. The fourth amendment exception allows CBP agents to conduct routine
border searches to anybody in a point

4. Customs and Curtiousies
CUSTOMS & COURTIOUSY
Marine customs are simply desirable courses of action sanctioned by tradition and usage. In the
Marine Corps, practically every custom has grown out of the manner in which Marines of the past
conducted themselves. Many Marine customs have been incorporated into regulations in order to
standardize conduct throughout the Corps, but some of them cannot be found in written directives.
Knowing and observing these customs, both written and unwritten, is important to each Marine
because it keeps him mindful of the heritage and traditions of his Corps, and of his duty to uphold
them. In addition, it makes him feel that he is a part of the team and helps to create the strong bond

The celebration involves the reading of an excerpt from the Marine Corps Manual and a birthday
message from the Commandant; the cutting of a birthday cake by the commanding officer; and the
presentation of the first and second pieces of cake to the oldest and youngest Marines present.
Recently, the ceremony for the observance of the Marine Corps Birthday by large posts and stations
has been incorporated into written directives.
Nautical Terms. Many of the Marine Corps customs are derived from the many years of service
afloat. Even ashore Marines customarily use nautical terms. Floors are "decks," walls are
"bulkheads," ceilings, "overheads," corridors, "passageways." The order "Gangway!" is used to clear
the way for an officer ashore, just as it is afloat. Among other terms in common usage are: "two–
block" –to tighten or center (as a necktie); "square–away" – to correctly arrange articles or to take in
hand and direct an individual;" "head" – a bathroom; "scuttle–but" –a drinking fountain, also an
unconfirmed rumor.
In the Marine Corps, the nautical expression "Aye, Aye, Sir" is used when acknowledging a verbal
order. "Yes, Sir" and "No, Sir" are used in answer to direct questions. "Aye, Aye, Sir" is not used in
answer to questions as this expression is reserved solely for

5. Mexican Food Custom
After reading the text, I learned that in rural areas of Mexico, food sharing is considered an
important food custom. The relationship that the Mexican farmers have with their food and farms
extends to their social network in this practice. The native Indian origin of Mexicans, in that more
than 80% have some form of Indian heritage mixed in with Spanish, is reflected in the foods and
worldview. I also understand, very well, that if an offering of food is not accepted, the person that
declines the food has made a huge error and considered rude. I am sure that this is due to the pride
that the offeror maintains, due to the personal relationship to the food that the family offers. After
all, the time that is taken to prepare the meals,

6. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Tariffs
CHALLENGES
BARRIERS RELATING TO CUSTOMS
Many companies, particularly those in the retail sector, have suggested that tariffs present the
greatest barrier to cross–border e–commerce. This problem does not exist within the EU, which is a
free–trade area; however, when exporting to countries outside of the EU tariffs are, indeed, a major
problem. One business suggested that "outside of the EU, tariffs are always the most problematic".
Tariffs raise the price of the products sold by e–traders and consequently reduce their
competitiveness. Tariffs are, however, not more of a problem for e–commerce than they are for
traditional trade. Therefore, in this study we have chosen not to delve deeper into the levels of the
tariffs, but instead to focus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One clear example of this is the requirement to use paper invoices and handwritten contracts. This
increases the administrative burden for companies and makes the use of various online–based
services impossible. One business gave an example of a service using an internet based platform
where the delivery of goods is automatically registered in the recipient's invoicing system. It is not
possible to use this service in countries such as Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine, where the use of
paper invoices and handwritten contracts is a requirement.
Double taxation
E–commerce creates revenues overseas, and there is, therefore, a risk of double taxation.
Fortunately, bilateral agreements often exist to deal with this. Despite such agreements being in
place, one business reported having problems in Norway, in this respect. The company had
established a subsidiary in Norway and sold its products online to customers from this subsidiary in

daily life. Certainly, Port Management Security is well aware of the economic impact and the threat
of disruption to the GTS. What are the four components of the GTS (air, sea, land, and rail transport
systems) and what are the subsequent critical infrastructure within each that support these
components of the GTS. The Global Transportation System (GTS) touches every aspect of human
life. From the food we eat to the clothes we wear, they are all moved within the Global
Transportation System GTS. Passenger travel from continent to continent using the Global
Transportation System GTS. Even troops and equipment for war is moved within the GTS. Simply
without the GTS and its four components of air, sea, land, and rail transports life would not be
possible for much of the world. The size of the GTS has continue to grow due to more business

11. The Role of U.S. Customs and Border Protection
THE ROLE OF U.S. CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION The U.S. Customs and Border
Protection (U.S. CBP) is one of the oldest law enforcement entities in the U.S., and has a rich
history of protecting our borders. A historical overview and understanding of the U.S. Customs
origins displays how over the centuries the strategic mission of the CBP has evolved to combat
threats of specific time eras. U.S. Customs has grown from collecting of revenue during the 1800s to
fighting the War on Drugs, and well into the 21st century where combating terrorism would be yet
another mission undertaken by CBP. Without a doubt, the U.S. Customs Service has played an
active role in the protection of the nation's borders against terrorism, criminal drug lords, and even
the violation of intellectual property theft. Origins of the U.S. Customs Service The U.S. Customs
was not officially established until the 1780s. Originally, right after the American Revolutionary
War, many American's were weary of federal government's control and involvement. For this very
reason many American States would proceed and hire their own customs agents collecting revenue
for the states and not federal government. It would not be until 1787 the Abortive Impost Bill would
officially be a law at the Constitutional Convention. These new federal customs agents would now
be tasked with enforcing revenue laws. Interestingly, Customs would be the largest agency besides

In this article, we evaluate the implications of the Children's Act 38 of 2005 for ukuthwala.
Ukuthwala is a practice whereby, preliminary to a customary marriage, a young man, by force, takes
a girl to his home. Questions arise relating to the impact of constitutional principles upon customary
law and practice. It is suggested that instead of a prohibitionist stance towards customs that seem to

million different methods of conducting its business. Some are old and some are new, but possibly
the oldest one that has been around since before the Army was officially established and still lives
today is the Armys rules, regulations and policies on customs and courtesies. In this form of a
remedial block of instruction given to me by my team leader, due to certain circumstances I am to
explain the Armys customs and courtesies and the importance they have always and still do hold
within the Army. The Army is an organization that imprints pride and discipline in its soldiers, both
enlisted and commissioned officers, because of its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The soldier guilty of these acts is just hurting his own career in the long run by getting negative
counselings which after so many are going to turn into an article 15 with extra duty or lose of pay
and rank or all three combined. The other soldier or soldiers on the team could end up suffering as
well just by having to work with such a dysfunctional team. Or perhaps one of the other soldiers
might want to go to a school or something of the sort they might look at how the team functions and
assume that he is the same as well and will consider what they will see as a better choice for certain
opportunities, privileges and favorable actions. Aside from just making your individual team look
bad it 'll make your whole platoon look bad in the eyes of the rest of the company. They will see a
team leader having a hard time with his soldier and the only thought that will be going through their
mind is "look at how that platoon is". They will not see it as just one person, they will see it as that
specific section or platoon as a whole. This comes from my own personal experience and the things
I have heard people say when it comes to such matters. It is important to practice good customs and
courtesies because actions and behaviors are contagious. They can either influence people to do
good or spread like a poison and cause damage which I have personally seen as well. Proper

Attracting Investors
In this plan, I will briefly identify the company and provide a short explanation of why the company

strategy plan addressing the necessary elements that will inform you of how the structure is
designed, and the company's goals.
The McCycles Custom Repairs motorcycle shop, is a locally owned and operated repair shop for all
makes and models of motorcycles. The business contains five work stations with three full time
repair technicians, two part–time technicians, coupled with one business accountant who maintains

24. The Immigration And Customs Enforcement Essay
ICE stands for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, they deal with matters concerning border
control, customs, trade and immigration to insure public safety and homeland security. Their
priorities focus on preventing terrorism and the illegal movement of items, as well as people. Within
ICE, there are three subgroups that fall into specialized tasks for the agency, such as Homeland
security investigations (HSI) and the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). Although being
a fairly new agency there has been more than a few controversies on how ICE handles the illegal
immigrants, however, since 9/11 the U.S has been trying to find the most effective ways to stop
terrorism. So, that also means that not everyone would agree with the tactics that ICE used to solve
the problem for those specific cases.
The U.S has been known as the land of opportunities, so of course people from all over the world
would try to leave their countries that weren't thriving economically after World War I, this lead to
immigration into the US to rise significantly. "Every year, the State Department issued a limited
number of visas; only those immigrants who had obtained them and could present valid visas were
permitted entry." Because of the limited number of visas, the number of illegal attempts into the
country began to occur. The Border Patrol was established when illegal aliens and entries started
becoming more frequent, the strict guidelines also causing deportation to go on as well.

Military Customs and Courtesies In the Army and throughout every branch there are certain customs
and courtesies that every soldier and military member must follow in order for there to be order and
discipline on a daily basis. Customs and courtesies are put in to place to show respect for Non
Commissioned Officers and for Officers of all rank. In this essay, I will be writing about the
importance of salutes, standing at the correct position when talking to someone higher ranking than
yourself, using proper language when talking to someone of a higher rank, where you should walk

Salutes are not required when you are indoors unless you are reporting to an officer or when on
guard duty or when saluting is obviously inappropriate. It is important to show noncommissioned
officers respect as well. You do not salute them; you stand at parade rest when talking to them and
address them by their proper rank. The ranks you say when speaking to a noncommissioned officer
are Corporal, sergeant, master sergeant, first sergeant and sergeant major. When talking to an NCO,
you always finish your sentence with his or her rank. Here is an example: "I do not know the answer
but I will find out and let you know Sergeant." It is simple and easy to remember for most soldiers,
while other soldiers need to remind themselves constantly to do this. Another military custom from
ancient times states that you should always sit or walk to the left of your superiors. This custom
came about in old English times and stems from very old English tradition. The right is known as
the "position of honor." Most people are right handed and back in the time of knights, the majority
of knights would hold their sword in their right now and their shield in their left hand.

An important festival that occurs is Genesia, especially Athenians, which is a general state festival

36. The Pros And Cons Of Customs Union
The reason I chose Customs Union as my topic is to learn more about how members or potential
members of a union establish an agreement that benefit all parties. I find it interesting that members
of a union are able to influence one another's economic growth, competition and how they can
complement one another as well. Having a common trade policy among a group of members and
removing all barriers of trade can play a significant role in the success of a business. It saves a lot
money, and could be a competitive advantage over competitors. Countries of a union joining can
also impact its position in a global market, as well as help the country economically. The ability for
a group of countries to come together and help each other is fascinating, and is why I chose to
explore this topic more.
EXPLANATION OF KEY TERM
The third stage of Economic Integration is Customs Union. According to the Encyclopaedia of
Britannica, Customs Union is a "trade agreement by which a group of countries charges a common
set of tariffs to the rest of the world while granting free trade among themselves" (Encyclopedia
Britannica, 2010). Customs Union is free–trade zone with common external tariffs; which helps
increase economic efficiency and allows for signatories to establish political and cultural ties. Tariff
barriers make it difficult for some countries to sell products in a foreign country because of the
additional taxes on imported goods, which is a price advantage to members of a

This essays point is to analyze the primary source and review what the document tells us about the
Persians and what it might be telling us about the Greeks. The primary source being used is "On the
Customs of Persians"by Herodotus which is written from his view point on the Persians in
comparison to the Greeks customs and beliefs. This paper will discuss the similarities and
differences between the two with evidence found in the primary source to back it up with quotes and
explanations to why it's important. The Greeks and Persians while sharing some similarities they are
outweighed by the two's differences such as; their image in god, sacrificing rituals, customs, and
death rituals. The first difference we see between the two and could also be the biggest, is the
Persians not having a set image of god since the Greeks see their gods as in the same nature as man.
We can infer this to Persians by this quote: "They have no images of god, no temples nor alters, and
consider them a sign of folly." (Herodotus par.2) Which tells us they do not see gods as an image of
man like the Greeks, they would see it foolish to think of them as mere idols and see them more as

Romania is situated in the southeast of Europe, to the north of the Balkan Mountains. It has a
population of about 23 million inhabitants. Most of its people are of Roman origin–in fact,
"Romania" means "land of the Romans". But there are also Hungarians, Germans, Serbs, Tartars,
and Russians who make up the rest of the population. The official language is Romanian, the only
language of Latin origin in Eastern Europe. Brought up to respect religious traditions, the majority
of Romanians is Orthodox (nearly 87 percent). Protestants are the next largest denomination at 6.8

The white blouse is also a basic item in male costume, tightened at the waist with a woolen sash or
leather belt. This is usually worn with narrow, white trousers. A typical piece of headgear for men is
the hat made of lambskin, black felt, or straw–depending on the time of year and the local tradition.
Romania preserved a significant number of traditional customs and celebrations manifest within the
strong community of the village. Ceremonies dedicated to the significant moments of one's life
(birth, wedding, death), to natural cycles (such as solstice, equinox, harvest, springtime) or to the big
religious celebrations, follow the same archaic mythical rituals they did a thousand years ago. Even
though preformed in 21st century in villages marked by modernization, such traditional rites haven't
diminish their prestige. They still provide viable answers to how to live in harmony with the
environment and community, that the present social and economical system cannot furnish.
During winter solstice, when the sun is weak and frost and dryness take over, Romanian peasants
conceived ceremonies to help the Sun and Nature to overcome this "temporary crisis." For 12 days
between Christmas and St. John on January 7th, all Romanian villages have specific celebrations,
starting with children's caroling on Christmas eve: "Mos Ajun" or "Buna Dimineata" (Good
Morning).

But one thing they all have in common is they show the respect and honor the soldiers and superiors

world as well as daily life. The only difference is that it is mandatory for the courtesies seen in the
military to be adhered to and followed by its soldiers. If these courtesies are not followed, the
offending soldier can, and almost always will, be punished. This punishment can come in the form
of corrective training, known commonly as essays, extra duty and can go as far as court martial, jail
time and/or being discharged from the military. In the military, manners and levels of respect help to
identify the difference between junior to senior ranking members. Courtesies and customs of the

Funeral customs in Japan vary widely from region to region, but the majority of them are held as
Buddhist funerals. At the time of death the body will be washed, and the orifices stuffed with cotton
or gauze. Following the cleaning, the body is dressed in a suit or kimono depending on the gender of
the deceased. Makeup is applied, and then the body is taken to where the service will be held. Once

close friends have attended the wake, the funeral service is held. Following the service the body and
the family are transported to the crematorium where they wait for their loved one to be cremated so
they may retrieve their bones and ashes. Due to the high population and small land area in Japan
they are all cremated and share a family gravesite. Once the ashes have been collected they are taken
to the family gravesite where the family says their last goodbyes and the urn is placed into the
hollow space inside the gravestone. The family will hold services on certain days and years over
