Fair Trade
Fair Trade: Consumerism for Global Justice
Introduction
The Fair Trade movement is rapidly becoming an emerging and dynamic strength to respond to the
negative influence of globalization, or rather, to the contemporary international trade injustice.
While on the other hand, there is criticism on fair trade, claiming that fair trade is not fair and it
goes against free market theory. This term paper aims at introducing the development of fair trade,
justifying its economical and ethical significance on the international trade and production chain,
and also reflecting on its limitations from different respective.
The term paper is structured starting from conceptual framework, which focuses on defining the

One set of standards applies to small scale producers, who don t depend on hired workers all the
time, but run their farm mainly on their own and their family s labour. The other set applies to hired
labors, whose employers pay decent wages, guarantee the right to join trade unions, ensure health
and safety standards and provide adequate housing where relevant.
The Standards Unit (SU) within FLO is responsible for developing and revising fair trade
standards. Fair trade standards refer to: (a) generic standards, (b) product standards, (c) fair trade
minimum prices (FTMP) and fair trade premiums (FTP). Producers and traders must meet
applicable standards for their products to be certified as fair trade.
Fair trade prices
According to fair trade standards, most products have a fair trade price, which is the minimum
that should be paid to the producers for their goods. This fair trade minimum price (FTMP) is
intended to cover the average producers costs of sustainable production (COSP) per product. If
global or regional minimum prices are determined, otherwise national prices are set. Producers or
workers (in the case of hired labour situations) of fair trade products also receive a fair trade
premiums(FTP) in addition to the minimum price. The determination of a minimum price may
involve the determination of the related premium (Andreas Kratz, 2010).

Essay On How To Become A World Power
There are several factors that can lead a nation into becoming a world power. Economics,
Demographics, Politics and Military. The United States can accredit much of its power today
thanks to its strong military arm. The War of 1812, Capture of Hawai i and the Spanish American
War were all turning points for the power the United Stateshas today. After President Jefferson s
reelection in 1804, fighting between Great Britain and France began to threaten American shipping.
In 1806, the British Royal Navy had set up blockades on Napoleonic Europe, preventing merchant
ships from entering and exiting, and severely impacting the economy in the process. Though the US

Hawai i has one of the most well situated ports in the world, known as Pearl Harbor. Prior to the
US claiming Hawai i, Admiral Alfred Mahan of the US Navy had pressured the United States to
begin expanding the Naval power, and the US Navy built nine new battleships. In 1887, the US
built a Naval base at Pearl Harbor. After King Kalakaua was forced to step down, his sister,
Queen Liliuokalani took over the throne and began running Hawai i on her own agenda.
Americans did not take kindly to this, and the US ambassador to Hawai i led a revolution that
dethroned the Queen, assisted by the US Marine Corps. American Sanford Dole, founder of the
Dole pineapple company, was put in charge of the government. Hawai i was officially claimed as
a US territory in 1898, giving the United States Navy a major strategic advantage do to Pearl
Harbor.
The United States always had an interest in the island of Cuba, as it was situated only 90 miles
south of Florida. However, Cuba was one of the last colonies controlled by Spain at the time, so
when the United States attempted to buy Cuba from Spain, the latter refused. That did not stop the
US from being interested though, and during the Cuban revolt, the US sympathized with Cuba. On
the 15 February 1898, Spanish sympathizers blew up the battleship USS Maine in the Port of
Havana, leading to the US declaring war on Spain in April of that same year. In the Philippines, the
US Navy destroyed the Spanish ships within hours, and the same

The Collection At The Museum Of Fine Arts
RESEARCH
Integrated into the Permanent Collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Pieter Brueghel the
Younger 1620 s painting Return from the Inn, illustrates an outdoor winter scenery of rustic peasant
life in early seventeenth century Belgium. Born in 1564 or 1565 in Brussels, Belgium, Pieter
Brueghel the Youngerwas a Flemish painter best known for being the oldest son of the notable
sixteenth century Netherlandish painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Mayken Coecke van Aelstv
(Artnet, 2016). Following the passing of both of his parents, Brueghel the Younger and his siblings
Marie and Jan went to live with their grandmother Mayken Verhulst, a reputable painter of
watercolors. It was her who acquainted Brueghel the Younger to painting. Around 1578, the family
relocated to Antwerp, Belgium, where Brueghel the Younger settled down and started a family.
Also during this time, Brueghel the Younger was practicing painting in the studio of a landscape
painter, Gillis van Coninxloo (Artnet, 2016).
The flourishing art market of this era and the high demand of Pieter Brueghel the Elder s
paintings drove his son to dedicate his time to recreating a body of low priced and inspired
replicas of his father s peasant scenes works (ArtUK, 2016). Akin to his father, he painted
sceneries, religious matters, axioms and small town landscapes. The paintings were sold for local
sale and export and were generally noted as missing humanism and nuance. In addition, he did

An Internship Is A Professional Program
Introduction In the recent years employers are more interested in hiring new workers with a
handful of experience in their field rather than their qualifications. An internship is a professional
program that provides practical experiences to students in which they learn and can reflect back on
for their future careers. Internships are increasingly becoming more evident in the work force as it
helps give employers an opportunity to find good quality employees and in return provides good
experience for the intern. Participating in internships, no matter paid or unpaid, is believed to
strengthen the probability of acquiring a top notch career in the competitive market. However, the
difference between paid and unpaid interns can dramatically change that window of opportunity for
those seeking to engage in it. As unemployment rates continue to rise, the competition for internship
increases. A large part of the demand market includes newly graduated students who just finished a
high educational degree in hopes to outshine their peers who are pursuing the same job. A
significant amount of these young people are willingly taking on unpaid internships with the risk of
them being unable to sustain their financial need. This ultimately hinders them from climbing up
the social ladder (DiMaria, 2013). In addition to this problem, although there are a few unpaid
internships out there that unprejudiced and moral, some employers who see unpaid internship as an
opening for free labor with

Foils In Romeo And Juliet
What is a foil? Right away some may think of the aluminum sheets to cover or make things out
of. When thinking of a foil in the literature language, it creates a whole different mindset. A foil is
when two characters personalities are completely opposite from one another to accentuate each
other. William Shakespeare, writer of the love story Romeo and Juliet uses foils greatly among the
Montagues and Capulets. The Montagues and Capulets are the two families who have a rivalry
with each other. Their hate for each other causes a lot of unnecessary drama especially when it
comes between the love of young Romeo and sweet Juliet. Foils do make the story more interesting
to show how one can change another with a different personality. Mercutio

Objective Psychology and Psychoanalysis Essay
1.Objective psychology and psychoanalysis have much in common. Wulff compares these studies
on page two hundred and fifty eight by stating both reject unaided introspection as a means of
gathering fundamental data. In other words, in neither psychoanalysis nor objective psychology,
can a person take an observation made from themselves about themselves and consider it
fundamental data. Another similarity would be that human conduct is the outcome of complexly
determined casual events that lie outside awareness (258). In this particular case, both types of
science believe that the way we act is an outcome of more than one event that may have occurred
outside of our knowing. An example could be being stressed out or feeling anxiety.... Show more

On the other side you have the psychoanalysts who draw their evidence from the private inner
world of the individual psyche (258). Where objective psychologists use observations that are
accessible to all sciences and observers the psychoanalyst draw all of their conclusion on facts that
come from studies of the individual s brain. This makes the psychoanalysts become participant
observers in the lives of their suffering patients (258). That is, they use longer studies that, at times,
become personal and intimate. The objective psychologists use terse and quantified responses of
randomly selected subjects (258). These studies are shorter and not personal because the patients or
subjects are picked randomly and completely unrelated.
2.In Sigmund Freud s studies, he studied religion and how it reflected on people during different
stages of his life. The stages he comes to discover were those of the oral stage, anal stage, phallic
stage, and the genital stage. All of these stages are related to how a child reacts to mothers and
fathers and how the Oedipus complex plays a role from infancy through adulthood. The way Freud
believed these stages started and progressed are involved with his two theories of psychology. One
is the ontogenetic theory, which is most enhanced by Freud, and the phylogenetic theory which is
the theory by Freud that is the most criticized. The ontogenetic theory is a theory designed

Extremities In American History X
American History X is a film production about a man named Derek Vineyard. The movie
presented his life during a tough period of when he was sent to prison for killing two men who
tried to break into and steal his truck. Throughout the movie, his brother, Danny Vineyard,
narrated Derek s story in which he spoke of his experience as a skinhead and a leader of a violent
white supremacist gang. Through Derek s experience the movie is able to demonstrate the
extremities of gang related communities and how it affects African American cultures. In the
movie, the main character lacked the mindset of the African American culture. Because of his dad,
he was heavily influence to hate African Americans. In one scene, he and his family are at the
dinner table when he tells his dad about school. Derek discusses a book they are reading that
converses the culture of black Americans. His dad immediately responds with a racial comment
arguing the school system is corrupt and books like that will ruin the system. Later on, the family is

mutual bond with the laundry man, he learns how mistreated colored people are in today s
society. The laundry man tells his story of how he stole a TV and was blamed for throwing it at
the officer when he was aggressively arrested and dropped the TV. Derek is then hated after
betraying his fellow prison gang members in public and is sexually assaulted by them. He was
now alone once again, but was never hurt. The laundry man was determined to keep him safe and

Fear In The Most Powerful Motivator, By Robert Evans...
Fear is a negative word when it comes to mind and an unwanted feeling. It is something that is
dangerous, painful, and threatening to us. A lot of people do not think of it as a motivator. In fact,
it is the most potent motivator according to Robert Evans Wilson Jr., author of The Most Powerful
Motivator. Fearis what keeps us from injuries, alive, provoke fights, and prevent us from making
mistakes (Wilson, 2009). Fear as a motivator also is a pain in the ass. In the book March, there
were many situations where fear was fought against to obtain equal rights. The African American
fear the ongoing racism, and they turned it around and used it as a motivator.
Fear is what keeps people brave; One example was at the very beginning of the book before
chapter one, it showed a graphic scene of peaceful African Americans marching across a bridge.
Hosea asked John, Can you swim? John replied, No. Hosea replied, Neither can I, but we might
have to. The Armed police were on the other side yelling to turn around. Instead, they kneel. The
cops ended up violently beating them up. In Understanding Comics, Scott talked about emotions
through vibrations of the lettering style; it tells an ongoing struggle of sounds. On page eight where
cops were beating up the African Americans, had different vibration lettering in and out of balloons.

John Donne Holy Sonnets Essay
John Donne
Death is a very complicated subject that people view very differently in different situations. In John
Donne s Holy Sonnets, he writes about death in Meditations X and XVII. Both meditations use
many similar rhetorical devices and appeals, but the tones of the meditations are very disparate.
Donne s different messages in Meditations X and XVII convey tones of defiance and acquiescence
towards death, respectively. His apparent change of attitude towards death could be accounted for
by his differing life situations while he was writing the meditations: mid life, and near death.
Meditation X , which Donne wrote in mid life, has a very defiant and powerful tone. Donne ... Show

In Meditation XVII Donne uses logos to show how death is an omnipresent, omnipotent entity. His
repetition and emphasis of bells, which symbolize death, are reminders of how death is
everywhere: bells are everywhere, therefore death is everywhere.
The rhetorical devices in each of Donne s meditations do not differ much, but they create very
different tones. Allusion in both meditations to the Bible has different effects on the audience. In
Meditation X death is referred to as thou which alludes to the Bible which constantly uses thou
when God refers to human beings. This allusion is a further demonstration of Donne s feelings
of superiority over death. In Meditation XVII death is referred to as being an extension of God
himself, which is an extreme opposite from death s position in Meditation XVII , and which
works to create the more acquiescent and passive tone. Relatively, both meditations appeal to the
audience s values of religion and God by referring to the Bible. Irony is employed by Donne in
order to set the overall tone of the meditations. The irony in Meditation X is that in the end, Death,
thou shalt die (Donne). This poetic justice follows the theme of Meditation X in its defiance against
the forces of nature, and ultimately identifies the tone of recalcitrance. The irony of Meditation
XVII is that death is our onely securitie, which does not

Benefits Of A Online Business
Persistence is a prerequisite to success in online business. There is no way you can make money
online if you are not persistent. Training yourself to become persistent, despite all eventualities, is
one important factor that you need to learn right from the day you venture into online business. It
should be understood right from the start that making money online takes time. Do not be fooled by
those scams who promise you heaven and who make you think that you can make thousands of
dollars overnight. To benefit from online business, it s really dependant upon several factors among
which include skill, knowledge, effort, time, will power and persistence.
I have observed that most people are longing to earn money online. This is evident in the number
of people that sign up in some of the affiliate programs I promote. However, when you consider
those who persist and become serious online marketers, you get tightlipped. I believe it s not only
with me. Even other marketers have a similar problem. Do you know why? It s partly because
many people join hoping to make quick money without necessarily knowing what it takes to
succeed in online business.
Persistence is an unknown secret to most would be successful people in online business. But it s
what has turned many online marketers into millionaires. Of course there are other contributing
factors, but persistence plays a pivotal role and is a key ingredient to success in your business.

Analysis Of The Book The Of Socrates
Robbie Higdon
Professor Swinehart
Intro to Phil. Questions
15 October 2014
The fact that [Socrates ] trial came to court when it need not have done so, the handling of the
trial itself, and now this absurd ending which will be thought to have got beyond our control
through some cowardice and unmanliness on our part, since we did not save you, or you save
yourself, when it was possible (45e 46e). This quote from the text Crito, written by Plato, directly
illustrates Crito s claim of feeling ashamed on Socrates behalf and on behalf of his friends, if what
happened was due to cowardice on their part. In order for us to be able to validate this argument
as persuasive or not, we must first take a look at the definitions of courage and manliness.
Plato more clearly discusses these attributes of courage and manliness in one of his other works,
Laches. In the Laches, Socrates engages two generals, Nicias and Laches, in conversation.
Laches first defines a man of courage as one who does not run away from an enemy. So if Crito
thought it was cowardly of Socrates to take his punishment instead of escaping that brings up a
major contradiction in Laches definition. As we know, Socrates decides to stay and face his
allegations in court, and eventually die, instead of attempting an escape. This makes him a man of
courage according to Laches first definition. But, sure enough, Socrates proceeds to dispute Laches
definition by saying that it does not cover all the examples of courage,

The Is A Victim Of Discrimination And Oppression
Mereana is identified as a victim of discrimination and oppression as a result of her family being
deeply religious and she is a committed Christian. As being from a Christian family her culture
is strictly against homosexuality. Mereana is concerned because her family do not have the wish
to talk about her woman partner even though she loves her more than anything else in the world.
Reasoning this is she has not formally come out to the family. From my perspective the idea of
being marginalised has already been set by the family. Mereana is basically trying to articulate
she only wants acceptance, and she wants her family to appreciate her and her woman partner
with open loving arms, and especially to approve of who they are as a person regardless of their
sexual orientation. It seen like Mereana wants homosexualityto be seen as just another alternative
lifestyle. But her culture, the Bible does not support homosexuality, nor does it support
homosexual marriage. Homosexual marriage is perceived as condemned. Marriage is conceived
as a legal union only between a man and a woman. This legislation portrays as a declaration about
how the heterosexual family is appraised and how all other family forms are not. Mereana s uncle
was estranged from the whanau because of this sexual orientation. This caused the whanau to
dissociation with the uncle. It said to be, he had sinned and having any association with the uncle
will be against their family s values and beliefs. An article

Essay about The History of Rock
The History of Rock
As one of the most popular music genres, rock music has grown and expanded to incorporate
many styles throughout the years. A rock band usually consists of a vocalist, an acoustic drum kit
played with a strong beat, usually a back beat, and features electric and acoustic guitars. From its
beginnings in the late 1950s and early 1960s until the present day, rock has changed styles
seemingly every decade as new bands become popular because of their unique style of music.
Throughout the years rock has influenced our culture and helped shape the world we live in today.
Rock and roll was born in the late 1950s. Primary influenced from southern artists like Elvis
Presley and Bill Haley, this new genre of music though ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This led to the involvement of orchestral instruments in rock.
Punk rock became popular due to the record industry s split from the major recording companies.
Smaller independent recording labels indorsed underground artists. This divided mainstream rock,
like Elvis Presley, and alternative rock, like The Grateful Dead. Other hard rock groups that got
there start in the 1970s were Kiss, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Rush, Journey, and Van Halen.
The mid to late 1970s brought about a slow but steady change in punk rock. With the advent of
heavy metal and punk rock bands an explosion of new rock genres emerged. The change was
started by three bands from New York. The New York Dolls, the Dictators and the Ramones
started a new trend that quickly spread throughout Europe and the rest of the world. It slowly
caught on in the US and when it finally did the hardcore form of punk rock became a national
expression for millions of teens and young adults for the next two decades.
The merging of heavy metal and punk rock was bound to happen. Although attempted in 1978 by
the Ramones, bands from Las Angeles became the first to successfully complete the crossover into
punk metal.
In the early 1980s, alternative rock bands like REM began to get a lot of airtime on college radio
stations and appearances on MTV and other TV settings. Before long numerous alternative radio
stations appeared

Nobody Knows Sparknotes
Making jokes is the best way for people to create connections. However, a person s sense of
humor makes a huge difference in joking telling because jokes can offend people and has
various consequences. Making jokes about people is common between friends because a man
can understand that his friend only wants to get a couple laughs out of him and that his joke
shouldn t be taken to heart. In the short story Nobody Knows, a man, who clearly has not
mastered English, comes up to a random man asking him to explain a fight to a nearby cop. When
the man says, Tell the cop that guys like that, guys that don t know the scene the first impression of

The kid throws a punch at the man and a ten second fight breaks out. The way everything played
out, the man started the fight because the kid could have interpreted the joke has the man
insulting his art skills. Another reason why the man is at fault is that he didn t even know the
person so why would he make a joke about his dick for? Plus, talking about dick does lead to
fights at times, depending on how people throw the word dick around. After the ten second
round ends, the man finds the stranger to help him explain the situation to the nearby cop. If I

Decade Of The 1920s Essay
The Decade of the 1920s
Newspapers had once been the only mass communication entertainment. The demand for new
products that emerged in the 1920s created a new industry, advertising, which enticed buyers to
purchase new products, and now that the radio had emerged, advertising was integrated into this
media outlet . Radio shows like Amos n Andy, became a nationwide hit. The advertisingindustry
grew with the emerging industries of mass culture, especially radio and cinema. For the first time,
from coast to coast, Americans experienced the same shows and used the same advertised products
due to mass culture. The first commercial radio station aired in 1920 and broadcast music to a few
thousand listeners. By the end of the decade, thirty three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Movies, novels, automobiles, and new dances like the Foxtrot and the Charleston influenced young
people. Although contraceptives were still illegal in most states, the work of birth control advocates
such as Margaret Sanger increased its acceptance during the 1920s. Fashion that set young people
apart from other generations was the flapper fad, which was influenced by celebrities. Young
women shocked the previous generation by wearing dresses hemmed at the knee, bobbing their
hair, smoking cigarettes, and driving cars. Additionally, there were many religious issues arose
during this decade. Division among Protestants reflected the tensions in society between the
traditional values of rural areas and the modern city life. The evolving role of women, the Social
Gospel movement, and science caused many Protestants to redefine their faith. Modernists took a
historical and critical view of certain passages in the bible and believed they could accept Darwin s
theory of evolution without abandoning their religious faith. Protestant preachers in rural areas
condemned the modernists and taught that every word in the bible must be accepted as literally
true. A key point in fundamentalist doctrine was that creationism explained the origin of all life.
Fundamentalist blamed the liberal views of modernists for causing a decline in morals. Religious

risked his life during hunger strikes, worked his way towards making change and ultimately
succeeded in his valiant efforts by the time of his death in 1993. First, Cesar began his career in

Social Disorganization In The 1920 s
Background on the Chicago Theory
In the 1920 s, a group of sociologist known as the Chicago School tried to expose the relationship
between a neighborhood s levels of crime and the characteristics. Many researchers tried to
understand why certain population moved to certain parts of that city. Some say that the structure of
the community shapes the routine of its inhabitants which will affect the crime rates. Studies show
that neighborhoods with high criminal behavior also have high levels of social disorganization.
Social disorganization, according to dictionary.reference.com, is a disruption or breakdown of the
structure of social relations. Social disorganization also refers to the failure of social institutions or
the social organizations in certain communities.
Back in the late 1950s, around WW1 and the Great Depression, there were times of growth and
change. A trend in that time period was that many cities were experiencing huge growth population,
especially in Chicago. The original city of Chicago was a small ... Show more content on

the communities. Before, I stood as an individual who considered that I was not able to do

Disadvantages Of Fossil Fuels
Ever since the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, fossil fuels have seen a huge rise in
popularity. Used to power the economy and numerous factories, fossil fuels started the leap in
technology that gives us the power we take for granted today. Since the beginning of the oil
industry in the 19th century, petroleum has risen to global everyday usage. Initially kerosene, a
product derived from petroleum, was used for lighting and heating, but with the appearance of
oil drilling technology petroleum became mass produced. Used to generate electricity to power
automobiles, ships, planes, etc. Today the world is almost completely dependant on fossil fuels.
World consumption of fossil fuels has increased from 3.8 billion tons of oil in 1965 to 11.1
billion tons of oil in 2007. Of all the fossil fuels available, oil has had the most profound effect on
society. However, fossil fuels are a finite resource. Fossil fuels work by converting the heat energy
released by combustion into electrical energy. Once the hard resources are extracted and refined,
they are ready for use. When combustion commences, the hydrocarbons present create energy. The
heat used to burn the fossil fuels causes the molecules of carbon and hydrogen to react, which
produces a large amount of energy. When they are exposed to heat, the hydrocarbon chain converts
the heat energy from the fossil fuels to electrical energy or mechanical energy. Coal power stations
use similar features. They burn large

How Education Is A Major Factor
The above graph shows the how education is a major factor in the variation of changes of the
United States during this time frame. For the birth year, it would be the birth year of the parents
of the students going to college. The percent is the percentage of students that completed college.
As you can easily tell that the elite class keeps rising, while the low class barely moves. The
developed countryof the United Stateshas increased the college costs for students in recent years.
Higher costs only benefit the wealthy and lower income students lose in this situation. Lower
income households end up borrowing too much. It doesn t affect the elite; in fact, they have the
largest spike opposed to the other classes. Although college completion rates have increased, the
cost of borrowing has also increased for lower class households. In a developing country, since
there is more poverty and less parents that went to college, it led to most adults not having any
schooling.
During my research, I came to a realization that the United States is actually increasing slowly in
income inequality. I saw this in another factor: health. The U.S. has a universal health care system
that sometimes benefits people by providing little cost co pays. The length of life varies among the
individuals and it was found that additional income allows for better care of oneself. This says that
greater income inequality will produce greater inequality of life spans within countries. The life
expectancy

The Library Field At A Young Age
Introduction I became interested in the library field at a young age. Through school library

as a place and for the talented men and women who staffed the library. This appreciation continued
through my time at Southern Connecticut State University, where I earned my BS in information

years I felt an immense sense of fulfillment in my work which propelled me to further my
education in the field and enroll at San Jose State University. After graduating from Southern

City Of St. Petersburg Case Study
The dream, the vision and the action to finalize a deal which would bring a Major League

when a group of ambitious businessmen collaborated to build what became the FloridaSuncoast

Alliteration In Wilfred Owen s Disabled
Wilfred Owen, poet of Disabled , recounts the desolating stories of a disabled soldier who has
been mutilated by the unforgiving First World War, when he was badly shaken from shell shock
during the war. He presents the suffering of a soldier as an everlasting void of torment that
threatens to tear his life into fragmented pieces of reminiscent memories.
The injuries and pain originated from the war have lingered even when it ends, harassing the
soldier as he tries to blend in once more with the rest of the community. Seen to have donned a
ghastly suit of grey , the sibilance characterises the soldier as a solemn representation of the war s
brutality. Ghastly further spotlights the soldier s disgust of the suit he is trapped in, even though ...

In contrast to the ex soldier s current situation, Owen depicts his past in enticing detail, especially
exhibited when the girls glanced lovelier as the air grew dim . His use of alliteration serves to
emphasise the girls glamour and beauty, whilst the connotations to brightness and liveliness from
lovelier offers a contrast to the greyness and absence of colour in the present. Here, the line
echoes with the previous phrases on the soldier s ghastly suit , implying that his colour,
symbolism of youth, was lost due to the war. The succeeding line, in the old times, he threw away
his knees , magnifies his regret of ever joining the army, describing this impulsive action the same
as a metaphor, throwing away his knees . Since threw connotes to a sense of carelessness and
indifference, it highlights the soldier s immaturity in losing such an important part of his life in a
blink of an eye, implying that teenagers could easily be swayed to do things they might not have
wanted to do. Owen demonstrates how time does not allow for much mistakes, as one incorrect
decision might account for all the suffering in the future, accentuating time s relentless and

for carload lots of 50,000 pounds. The less than carload rate is $15 per hundredweight. While
anything coming from the Columbus supplier was offered just in time delivery service at no

they were located close enough that they offered JIT delivery which allowed the reduction
minimizing work in process inventories (waste) by reducing lot sizes in order to increase
production efficiency and product quality. Now, with the change, it will force MARS Inc. to spend
money on warehousing and carrying cost due to the one week replenishment cycle the Portland

Reflective Essay On Greek Culture
My experience attending the Seminar on Greece with Dr. Khosrowshahi was a very interesting, fun
and informational way to gain knowledge of the different cultures and history of other parts of the
world. I do not have an extensive knowledge of Greek history or culture. I enjoyed learning the
different traditions and cultural rituals of the Greek culture. I learned a lot about the historyof
Greece and how much the history influences many other cultures throughout the world. The most
interesting fact and important impression I took away from the seminar is my Mother s name is
Diane , neither my mother or myself knew the Greek history behind her name. I enjoyed how Dr. K
used different ways to involve the students at the seminar to become engaged in learning and
experiencing Greek culture. I found the drum performance quite exciting and interesting. Also, the
young ladies demonstrating their cultural dance skills were very entertaining. After learning more
about Greek culture, I found it very interesting how much the alphabet and language influences
American English.
The part of the seminar I enjoyed most was Dr. K demonstrating his knowledge of Greek music by
demonstrating the drum. I enjoyed many other aspects of the seminar as well. I enjoyed the visuals,
including the pictures and videos used to provide a visual experience of Greek culture. The Greek
culture artifacts and photos from previous trips to Greece was inspiring and exciting to experience
as well. Also, student interaction was impressive throughout the entire seminar. There is not
anything I disliked about the seminar. The only thing I did not like was having to take off work to
attend. This is not anything involving the seminar or the presentation. Furthermore, I am thankful I
was able to have the opportunity to take off work to attend this continuing education experience.
Prior to this seminar, I was not aware of the extensive history of the Olympic Games. It was
interesting to learn the Olympics originated before Christ. Also, the Olympics truly represent the
uniting of different cultures, religions and races. This is a very inspirational and motivating
experience considering the current division of cultures. When

The Ethical Theory Of Ethical Theories Essay
Ethical theories are concepts or moral values that dictate whether choices are right or wrong. The
two ethical theories that are the most prominent in society are Utilitarianism and Deontology.
Utilitarianism is a theory that judges the value of the action as good or bad based on the
consequences of the deed, while Deontology believes the motive of the act is more important.
When determining the value of the decisions, the variables are based on the guidelines of each
ethical theory. This includes providing the basis of how to make logical decisions founded on
ethical reasoning. Unfortunately, there are many situations where individual s rights are threatened
due to unethical and unmoral situations like sexual harassment in the workplace. To prevent similar
situations from occurring, individuals must be able to fully understand when to apply the use of
ethicsto decision making. For this type of mindset to take place, the public needs to be educated on
the different types of ethical ideologies, and know how to approach situations based on ethical
solutions. Once the public is aware of the ethical theories and how to avoid unethical situations,
there will a decreased amount of sexual harassment in the workplace. Utilitarianism, also known as
consequentialism, is a theory where actions are considered good or bad depending on the
consequences of the actions, not the motives. In Utilitarianism, the main goal of the theory is to
maximize the most amount of good for all people.

Young Girl Named Scout By Harper Lee
In the past, it has been evident that the population of the Southern states had been composed of
many different social classes, particularly in the 1930s. In her novel, To Kill A Mockingbird,
Harper Lee clearly depicts these social classes and illustrates how diverse they make the population
of Maycomb, a fictional town where the story takes place. The main character, a young girlnamed
Scout, does not fully understand the concept of these different social classes and often fails to
recognize which one she belongs to. As the story progresses, it becomes known to the reader that
Scout is part of the highest social classin Maycomb. However, because of the conditions she is
raised in, she does not fit in with a certain group of women that this class is mainly composed of:
the Southern belles. Throughout the story, it is evident that some Maycomb women possess the
traits of a Southern Belle persona, such as while Scout does not, due to the fact that she grows up
without a mother.
The term Southern belle refers to a wealthy but well mannered young woman, often characterized
by her chaste demeanor and submissive attitude, who tries to reach perfection in almost every
aspect of her life. Some of the most important elements to being a Southern belle include grace,
manners, breeding, etiquette, and demure behavior. A Southern belle should always be polite and

friendliness and composure.

60,000 years ago but it was a little over one hundred years ago that the first missionaries and
mineral prospectors arrived in Central Australia. They were soon joined by government officers and
pastoralists with cattle and sheep which fouled the waterholes and grazed on the bush tucker

A successful land claim requires the Aboriginal landowners to prove their traditional relationship to
the land under claim. This involves extensive research by anthropologists, and the claimants
providing evidence before the Aboriginal Land Commissioner who is a judge of the Federal Court
or the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory.
The Commissioner must be satisfied that the claimants are the right traditional owners according to
Aboriginal law.
The Land Commissioner makes his recommendation to the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. He must
also comment on any detriment to others that may occur should the land be granted and the effect a
grant may have on existing or proposed patterns of land usage in the region.
The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs decides whether to recommend to the Governor General to
grant all or part of the land under claim.
As a result of an amendment to the Aboriginal Land Rights act by the Hawke Government, no
more land claims could be lodged after June 30 1997. However some claims before then are still
outstanding.

Indian Church Community
Imagine a church that has no exact start time and no end time, where you can only assume that
church ends after eating lunch at four o clock when half of the members starts to leave. It is not
just any regular church community, but an Indian church community. A community is a group of
close knit family and friends who share a common belief, idea, or even a tradition. We all are a part
of a communityor communities that at least have some common ground. One of the communities
that I am part of is that particular church community as a mentioned earlier. There is a quite a
difference in the people in an American church and an Indian church community. Sometimes the
service takes longer than two hours because there is always a few people who would request
another song to be sung, continuously. But overall, the church is great and its members, plus my
family and I like it there. Therefore, helping my community to be better than before is my goal, so

My family and I are in charge of decorating the hall where the dinner reception is going to take
place. The conference is about three days long, from Friday to Sunday, and each night has to be
redecorated for the dinner receptions. We had one this year in July and it was the most stressful
decorating we have done. I am not going into details on what made things hectic, but it involve
some people thinking that we were in charge of doing everything; such as setting up, decorating,
food set up, cleaning up, and so forth. After all, we are the Waleski family so we can make thing
happen in a timely matter (even with a lot of curve balls thrown at us). Nevertheless, at the end of
it, we knew that our purpose of decorating was to make the conference a better experience for

Poetry during the Roman empire played a prevalent role in society along with what was being
discussed and studied around the cities under their rule. However, what is less known are the roles
society and the people played, in what type of poetry, language, and tone were used. Latin poetry,
through symbolism and humanity s ideology, represents the evolution of the Roman era and
government. Latin literature leaves behind a lasting legacy of the culture of ancient Rome. Some of
the earliest works are historical epics telling of the early military history of Rome, followed by
comedies, histories and tragedies. The comedies were the earliest as the Roman empirewas strong
and they could have fun because there was nothing to worry about. The tragedies were written
during the collapse of the Roman empire. This is an example of how the people and situations

This means that the future is unforeseen and that one should not leave to chance future
happenings, but rather one should do all one can today to make one s future better. It
encourages youth to enjoy life before it is too late. The expression memento mori ( remember
that you are mortal ) relates to carpe diem For Ausonius, mindfulness of our own mortality is key
in making us realize the importance of the moment. Remember that you are mortal, so seize the
day. These two phrases represent almost opposite approaches, with carpe diem urging us to
savour life and memento mori urging us to resist its allure. However, since Ausonius poem is
titled in the past tense, he was trying to tell the Roman empire before it collapsed to resist the
greed, power, and jealousy, but they didn t and they collapsed. These two poems show how the
poetry Ausonius and Juvenal wrote, were directly affected by the evolution and collapse of the

Descriptive Essay On My Room
My bedroom is not a place for the entire community. However, it is just as comfortable to me as
someone else s room is just as comfortable to them. My room is comparably different though. It s
not just a place where I keep all my stuff and sleep all day. There s more to my private abode than
what meets the eye.
Walking on the hardwood floor feels like a punch to the bottom of your foot. The flooring creaks
throughout the house as if it were haunted. However, it s my private space out of the rest of the
world, so overall, it would be worthwhile to cherish it. The blue walls do not take much interest, but
the Eiffel Towerdecal and the dark brown trimming brings a bold touch. The room shape is
nothing special, just a small and box like. Dressers and bookshelves are crammed together from
wall to wall. The bed ends up finishing off the room. Having a memory foam mattress isn t hard
on any body part, it cradles the body with every movement. Black and white bedding adds to the
decoration of the room, and all my extra pillows and blankets brings a rainbow to the neutral
bedding colors.
My room could be the just as comfortable for rest as the next, but there s more to it than just having
the blankets and pillows. It s not just the peaceful warmth that engulfs a cold night either. Seeing
the dark of the night makes surrounding areas invisible until light is shone. The sound of the fan is
like the quietest vacuum on Earth constantly going. The shine of bedroom lights through the

History of the Fire Service
The History of the Fire Service
Did you know that the earliest form of firefighting took place in Rome in 24 B.C? After almost
being destroyed by unruly conflagrations, Rome created a fire department consisting of about
7,000 paid firefighters. Their fire crews responded to and fought fires, and also patrolled the streets
with the authority to fine anyone who disobeyed the fire prevention codes (Hashgan). The major
piece of firefighting equipment the Roman s used was the bucket, which was passed from hand to
hand to deliver water to the fire. Additionally, they used an ax, which was utilized to remove the
fuel and prevent the spread of fire, as well as to make openings that would allow heat and smoke to
escape a burning building. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Along with the establishment of fire companies, fire insurance was also created.
In 1829, a steam fire engine was built in London, but the volunteer fire companies were stuck in
the olden days and they were slow to accept it, but in Cincinnati, Ohio, the public forced the
firefighters to use the steam engines. Additionally, William F. Channing used telegraph technology
to develop the first fire alarm box system in 1852 (Britannica). By April 29, 1852 the first box was
struck, and boxes were placed all over the city.
Later, in 1832, the New York Mutual Hook and Latter Company No. 1 bought a horse to pull
their engine. Before long, horses became a part of the fire service all over the country (Hashagan).
Many of the horses were trained to the sound of the bell to get out of their stalls and stand at the
front of the engine, usually with the help of the Dalmatian, the fire dog (Hashagan). Dalmatians
were chosen as fire dogs not only because of the strong bonds they form with the horses, but also
because they guarded the engine. At the sound of the bell, the
dog would stir up the horses and then run outside and bark at the people trying to cross in front of
the fire house (Hashagan).
In the year 1870, the aerial ladder wagon appeared. This enabled the firefighters to reach high
places, tall buildings, and made putting out fires and rescuing trapped victims easier. Then in 1871
the hose elevator was created. The hose elevator made it possible for the water

Discussion of the Main Reasons that have Resulted in the...
Disintermediation could lead to economic crisis because of the importance of banks in the
economy. Banks are very important in an economy because they provide safety for depositor,
provide a wide variety of loans and offer other credit vehicles like cards and overdrafts. The bank
connects surplus and deficit economic agents and significantly contributes to the progress of any
economy through facilitation of business.
Economic Development: Banks facilitate the development of saving plans and are instruments of
the government s monetary strategic policies among others. They also provide credit provision,
liquidity provision, and risk management services, remittance of money, rapid economic

It increases the size of the capital market and generates more business for investment banks,
brokers, and fund managers because of the advisory role. It enables borrowers to borrow at a
lower cost and investors get higher rate of return, but they lose the safety of the banking system in
the process. (Patrick Artus, October 2012.)
Main reasons for Bank disintermediation are as follows:
High Rate of Borrowing: If the Bank s rate of borrowing is high, borrowers tend to seek lower
cost of financing for example, issuers of commercial papers, etc to reduce overall interest expense
and ultimately improve on company s cash flow from operations.
Low Interest Rates: Low interest rates on deposit and savings accounts could lead to financial
disintermediation because depositors who want higher returns on their deposits will be looking at
alternative ways of improving their yield. Also policies like regulation Q and Regulation D
promulgated by the Federal Reserve Board in the United States in 1933, though regulation Q does
not exist anymore led to imposition of interest rate ceilings on various other types of bank deposits,
including savings and time deposits. The imposed limit on savings deposit interest rates encouraged
the rise of alternatives to banks, including money market funds.

Post Disaster Planning and Development for NGOs and...
Humanitarian and non governmental (NGOs) organizations play a very important role in post
disaster planning and development because government cannot address everything, everywhere. In
fact, in many parts of the world the sitting government may not even be capable of addressing the
basic day to day needs of its population, pre disaster. Traditionally, NGOs and humanitarian
organizational tackle issues such as human rights, advocacy, humanitarian aid, hunger, extreme
poverty, education, housing and vocational training. Now these organizations are responding to
disasters and working in the areas of reconstruction, risk reduction, mitigation and disaster
preparedness.
NGOs and humanitarian organizational structures are flexible. Organizational size, staff and
volunteer workforce can quickly expand or contract to accommodate the mission at hand. This
enables service delivery at a much lower cost than most governments, private sector and multi
lateral agencies can provide. NGOs and humanitarian organizations work at the grassroots level so
while government may have the primary role of planning and managing all aspects of the disaster
NGOs and humanitarian organizational can supplement these initiatives by helping people
understand their rights and focusing on specific issues that assist vulnerable populations. This
bottom up community based approached can accelerate the whole community s recovery post
disaster.
In instances where the government cannot support disaster

Arthur Miller And Elia Kazan
Relationship between Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan
I think it s a mistake to ever look for help outside of oneself Arthur Miller. This statement can be
used to describe the complicated relationship between Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan during the
Red Scare. Both Miller and Kazan were at the height of their career during this timeframe and the
major focus on communism was the start of downfall of their friendship. Miller and Kazan had
friction over the decades in both their professional lives as well as personal lives. There were many
issues from the personal issue of Marilyn Monroe to professional conflict, but society s focus on
communism and figuring out who supported the idealism was the final strain that caused
irreparable damage. The red scare was during the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was a time in
history when the fear of communism would spread throughout the United States causing
widespread panic. The red scare had a dramatic effect on every aspect of life in the United States
of America from your average citizens to the Hollywood elite. The red scare was a time period
when paranoia caused people to question everybody and quickly assume anyone and everyone
could be a spy for the Soviet Union. Citizens and government officials were suspicious of
communist activity and actively searched for any that were among them. People started blaming
others they suspected of being communist sympathizers. This is similar to plot and outline of The

Depending on your location and the weather at the end of February, the twenty ninth may or may
not be a good time to gather the children and head to the local creek, pond, or other wetland in

The Ethics Of The Sarbanes Oxley Act
Question 1 Throughout history and in our own time, legitimate accounting methods have been
utilized to fraudulently engage in manipulating activities that results in illicit gains to the
perpetrators and losses to individuals and financial institutions. The most common accounting fraud
is the misrepresentation of financial statements which is frequently known as cooking the books
and includes manipulation, falsification, or alteration of accounting records, intentional omission
from the financial statements and intentional misapplication of accounting principles relating to
amounts, classification, manner of presentation, or disclosure. In addition, associated with the
misapplication of accounting methods, the financial industry has been plagued with one disaster
after another involving numerous scandals from top leading American companies. Consequently,
the Sarbanes Oxley Act was passed in 2002 compromising eleven sections that are generated to
insure the responsibilities of the company s managers and executives. This act identifies criminal
penalties for particular unethical practices and currently has new policies that a corporation must

  • 2. Fair Trade Fair Trade: Consumerism for Global Justice Introduction The Fair Trade movement is rapidly becoming an emerging and dynamic strength to respond to the negative influence of globalization, or rather, to the contemporary international trade injustice. While on the other hand, there is criticism on fair trade, claiming that fair trade is not fair and it goes against free market theory. This term paper aims at introducing the development of fair trade, justifying its economical and ethical significance on the international trade and production chain, and also reflecting on its limitations from different respective. The term paper is structured starting from conceptual framework, which focuses on defining the term of fair trade , ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One set of standards applies to small scale producers, who don t depend on hired workers all the time, but run their farm mainly on their own and their family s labour. The other set applies to hired labors, whose employers pay decent wages, guarantee the right to join trade unions, ensure health and safety standards and provide adequate housing where relevant. The Standards Unit (SU) within FLO is responsible for developing and revising fair trade standards. Fair trade standards refer to: (a) generic standards, (b) product standards, (c) fair trade minimum prices (FTMP) and fair trade premiums (FTP). Producers and traders must meet applicable standards for their products to be certified as fair trade. Fair trade prices According to fair trade standards, most products have a fair trade price, which is the minimum that should be paid to the producers for their goods. This fair trade minimum price (FTMP) is intended to cover the average producers costs of sustainable production (COSP) per product. If global or regional minimum prices are determined, otherwise national prices are set. Producers or workers (in the case of hired labour situations) of fair trade products also receive a fair trade premiums(FTP) in addition to the minimum price. The determination of a minimum price may involve the determination of the related premium (Andreas Kratz, 2010). Impact of fair trade ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On How To Become A World Power There are several factors that can lead a nation into becoming a world power. Economics, Demographics, Politics and Military. The United States can accredit much of its power today thanks to its strong military arm. The War of 1812, Capture of Hawai i and the Spanish American War were all turning points for the power the United Stateshas today. After President Jefferson s reelection in 1804, fighting between Great Britain and France began to threaten American shipping. In 1806, the British Royal Navy had set up blockades on Napoleonic Europe, preventing merchant ships from entering and exiting, and severely impacting the economy in the process. Though the US was hesitant to get involved, the US Government had been angered by the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hawai i has one of the most well situated ports in the world, known as Pearl Harbor. Prior to the US claiming Hawai i, Admiral Alfred Mahan of the US Navy had pressured the United States to begin expanding the Naval power, and the US Navy built nine new battleships. In 1887, the US built a Naval base at Pearl Harbor. After King Kalakaua was forced to step down, his sister, Queen Liliuokalani took over the throne and began running Hawai i on her own agenda. Americans did not take kindly to this, and the US ambassador to Hawai i led a revolution that dethroned the Queen, assisted by the US Marine Corps. American Sanford Dole, founder of the Dole pineapple company, was put in charge of the government. Hawai i was officially claimed as a US territory in 1898, giving the United States Navy a major strategic advantage do to Pearl Harbor. The United States always had an interest in the island of Cuba, as it was situated only 90 miles south of Florida. However, Cuba was one of the last colonies controlled by Spain at the time, so when the United States attempted to buy Cuba from Spain, the latter refused. That did not stop the US from being interested though, and during the Cuban revolt, the US sympathized with Cuba. On the 15 February 1898, Spanish sympathizers blew up the battleship USS Maine in the Port of Havana, leading to the US declaring war on Spain in April of that same year. In the Philippines, the US Navy destroyed the Spanish ships within hours, and the same ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Collection At The Museum Of Fine Arts RESEARCH Integrated into the Permanent Collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Pieter Brueghel the Younger 1620 s painting Return from the Inn, illustrates an outdoor winter scenery of rustic peasant life in early seventeenth century Belgium. Born in 1564 or 1565 in Brussels, Belgium, Pieter Brueghel the Youngerwas a Flemish painter best known for being the oldest son of the notable sixteenth century Netherlandish painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Mayken Coecke van Aelstv (Artnet, 2016). Following the passing of both of his parents, Brueghel the Younger and his siblings Marie and Jan went to live with their grandmother Mayken Verhulst, a reputable painter of watercolors. It was her who acquainted Brueghel the Younger to painting. Around 1578, the family relocated to Antwerp, Belgium, where Brueghel the Younger settled down and started a family. Also during this time, Brueghel the Younger was practicing painting in the studio of a landscape painter, Gillis van Coninxloo (Artnet, 2016). The flourishing art market of this era and the high demand of Pieter Brueghel the Elder s paintings drove his son to dedicate his time to recreating a body of low priced and inspired replicas of his father s peasant scenes works (ArtUK, 2016). Akin to his father, he painted sceneries, religious matters, axioms and small town landscapes. The paintings were sold for local sale and export and were generally noted as missing humanism and nuance. In addition, he did create authentic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. An Internship Is A Professional Program Introduction In the recent years employers are more interested in hiring new workers with a handful of experience in their field rather than their qualifications. An internship is a professional program that provides practical experiences to students in which they learn and can reflect back on for their future careers. Internships are increasingly becoming more evident in the work force as it helps give employers an opportunity to find good quality employees and in return provides good experience for the intern. Participating in internships, no matter paid or unpaid, is believed to strengthen the probability of acquiring a top notch career in the competitive market. However, the difference between paid and unpaid interns can dramatically change that window of opportunity for those seeking to engage in it. As unemployment rates continue to rise, the competition for internship increases. A large part of the demand market includes newly graduated students who just finished a high educational degree in hopes to outshine their peers who are pursuing the same job. A significant amount of these young people are willingly taking on unpaid internships with the risk of them being unable to sustain their financial need. This ultimately hinders them from climbing up the social ladder (DiMaria, 2013). In addition to this problem, although there are a few unpaid internships out there that unprejudiced and moral, some employers who see unpaid internship as an opening for free labor with ... • 6. Foils In Romeo And Juliet What is a foil? Right away some may think of the aluminum sheets to cover or make things out of. When thinking of a foil in the literature language, it creates a whole different mindset. A foil is when two characters personalities are completely opposite from one another to accentuate each other. William Shakespeare, writer of the love story Romeo and Juliet uses foils greatly among the Montagues and Capulets. The Montagues and Capulets are the two families who have a rivalry with each other. Their hate for each other causes a lot of unnecessary drama especially when it comes between the love of young Romeo and sweet Juliet. Foils do make the story more interesting to show how one can change another with a different personality. Mercutio ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Objective Psychology and Psychoanalysis Essay 1.Objective psychology and psychoanalysis have much in common. Wulff compares these studies on page two hundred and fifty eight by stating both reject unaided introspection as a means of gathering fundamental data. In other words, in neither psychoanalysis nor objective psychology, can a person take an observation made from themselves about themselves and consider it fundamental data. Another similarity would be that human conduct is the outcome of complexly determined casual events that lie outside awareness (258). In this particular case, both types of science believe that the way we act is an outcome of more than one event that may have occurred outside of our knowing. An example could be being stressed out or feeling anxiety.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other side you have the psychoanalysts who draw their evidence from the private inner world of the individual psyche (258). Where objective psychologists use observations that are accessible to all sciences and observers the psychoanalyst draw all of their conclusion on facts that come from studies of the individual s brain. This makes the psychoanalysts become participant observers in the lives of their suffering patients (258). That is, they use longer studies that, at times, become personal and intimate. The objective psychologists use terse and quantified responses of randomly selected subjects (258). These studies are shorter and not personal because the patients or subjects are picked randomly and completely unrelated. 2.In Sigmund Freud s studies, he studied religion and how it reflected on people during different stages of his life. The stages he comes to discover were those of the oral stage, anal stage, phallic stage, and the genital stage. All of these stages are related to how a child reacts to mothers and fathers and how the Oedipus complex plays a role from infancy through adulthood. The way Freud believed these stages started and progressed are involved with his two theories of psychology. One is the ontogenetic theory, which is most enhanced by Freud, and the phylogenetic theory which is the theory by Freud that is the most criticized. The ontogenetic theory is a theory designed ... • 8. Extremities In American History X American History X is a film production about a man named Derek Vineyard. The movie presented his life during a tough period of when he was sent to prison for killing two men who tried to break into and steal his truck. Throughout the movie, his brother, Danny Vineyard, narrated Derek s story in which he spoke of his experience as a skinhead and a leader of a violent white supremacist gang. Through Derek s experience the movie is able to demonstrate the extremities of gang related communities and how it affects African American cultures. In the movie, the main character lacked the mindset of the African American culture. Because of his dad, he was heavily influence to hate African Americans. In one scene, he and his family are at the dinner table when he tells his dad about school. Derek discusses a book they are reading that converses the culture of black Americans. • 9. Fear In The Most Powerful Motivator, By Robert Evans... Fear is a negative word when it comes to mind and an unwanted feeling. It is something that is dangerous, painful, and threatening to us. A lot of people do not think of it as a motivator. In fact, it is the most potent motivator according to Robert Evans Wilson Jr., author of The Most Powerful Motivator. Fearis what keeps us from injuries, alive, provoke fights, and prevent us from making mistakes (Wilson, 2009). Fear as a motivator also is a pain in the ass. In the book March, there were many situations where fear was fought against to obtain equal rights. The African American fear the ongoing racism, and they turned it around and used it as a motivator. Fear is what keeps people brave; One example was at the very beginning of the book before chapter one, it showed a graphic scene of peaceful African Americans marching across a bridge. Hosea asked John, Can you swim? John replied, No. Hosea replied, Neither can I, but we might have to. The Armed police were on the other side yelling to turn around. Instead, they kneel. The cops ended up violently beating them up. In Understanding Comics, Scott talked about emotions through vibrations of the lettering style; it tells an ongoing struggle of sounds. On page eight where cops were beating up the African Americans, had different vibration lettering in and out of balloons. This page showed the different struggle of fear. ... • 10. John Donne Holy Sonnets Essay John Donne Death is a very complicated subject that people view very differently in different situations. In John Donne s Holy Sonnets, he writes about death in Meditations X and XVII. Both meditations use many similar rhetorical devices and appeals, but the tones of the meditations are very disparate. Donne s different messages in Meditations X and XVII convey tones of defiance and acquiescence towards death, respectively. His apparent change of attitude towards death could be accounted for by his differing life situations while he was writing the meditations: mid life, and near death. Meditation X , which Donne wrote in mid life, has a very defiant and powerful tone. Donne ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Meditation XVII Donne uses logos to show how death is an omnipresent, omnipotent entity. His repetition and emphasis of bells, which symbolize death, are reminders of how death is everywhere: bells are everywhere, therefore death is everywhere. The rhetorical devices in each of Donne s meditations do not differ much, but they create very different tones. Allusion in both meditations to the Bible has different effects on the audience. In Meditation X death is referred to as thou which alludes to the Bible which constantly uses thou when God refers to human beings. This allusion is a further demonstration of Donne s feelings of superiority over death. In Meditation XVII death is referred to as being an extension of God himself, which is an extreme opposite from death s position in Meditation XVII , and which works to create the more acquiescent and passive tone. Relatively, both meditations appeal to the audience s values of religion and God by referring to the Bible. Irony is employed by Donne in order to set the overall tone of the meditations. The irony in Meditation X is that in the end, Death, thou shalt die (Donne). This poetic justice follows the theme of Meditation X in its defiance against the forces of nature, and ultimately identifies the tone of recalcitrance. The irony of Meditation XVII is that death is our onely securitie, which does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Benefits Of A Online Business Persistence is a prerequisite to success in online business. There is no way you can make money online if you are not persistent. Training yourself to become persistent, despite all eventualities, is one important factor that you need to learn right from the day you venture into online business. It should be understood right from the start that making money online takes time. Do not be fooled by those scams who promise you heaven and who make you think that you can make thousands of dollars overnight. To benefit from online business, it s really dependant upon several factors among which include skill, knowledge, effort, time, will power and persistence. I have observed that most people are longing to earn money online. This is evident in the number of people that sign up in some of the affiliate programs I promote. However, when you consider those who persist and become serious online marketers, you get tightlipped. I believe it s not only with me. Even other marketers have a similar problem. Do you know why? It s partly because many people join hoping to make quick money without necessarily knowing what it takes to succeed in online business. Persistence is an unknown secret to most would be successful people in online business. But it s what has turned many online marketers into millionaires. Of course there are other contributing factors, but persistence plays a pivotal role and is a key ingredient to success in your business. Hard work and persistence can ... • 12. Analysis Of The Book The Of Socrates Robbie Higdon Professor Swinehart Intro to Phil. Questions 15 October 2014 The fact that [Socrates ] trial came to court when it need not have done so, the handling of the trial itself, and now this absurd ending which will be thought to have got beyond our control through some cowardice and unmanliness on our part, since we did not save you, or you save yourself, when it was possible (45e 46e). This quote from the text Crito, written by Plato, directly illustrates Crito s claim of feeling ashamed on Socrates behalf and on behalf of his friends, if what happened was due to cowardice on their part. In order for us to be able to validate this argument as persuasive or not, we must first take a look at the definitions of courage and manliness. Plato more clearly discusses these attributes of courage and manliness in one of his other works, Laches. In the Laches, Socrates engages two generals, Nicias and Laches, in conversation. Laches first defines a man of courage as one who does not run away from an enemy. So if Crito thought it was cowardly of Socrates to take his punishment instead of escaping that brings up a major contradiction in Laches definition. As we know, Socrates decides to stay and face his allegations in court, and eventually die, instead of attempting an escape. This makes him a man of courage according to Laches first definition. But, sure enough, Socrates proceeds to dispute Laches definition by saying that it does not cover all the examples of courage, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Is A Victim Of Discrimination And Oppression Mereana is identified as a victim of discrimination and oppression as a result of her family being deeply religious and she is a committed Christian. As being from a Christian family her culture is strictly against homosexuality. Mereana is concerned because her family do not have the wish to talk about her woman partner even though she loves her more than anything else in the world. Reasoning this is she has not formally come out to the family. From my perspective the idea of being marginalised has already been set by the family. Mereana is basically trying to articulate she only wants acceptance, and she wants her family to appreciate her and her woman partner with open loving arms, and especially to approve of who they are as a person regardless of their sexual orientation. It seen like Mereana wants homosexualityto be seen as just another alternative lifestyle. But her culture, the Bible does not support homosexuality, nor does it support homosexual marriage. Homosexual marriage is perceived as condemned. Marriage is conceived as a legal union only between a man and a woman. This legislation portrays as a declaration about how the heterosexual family is appraised and how all other family forms are not. Used to power the economy and numerous factories, fossil fuels started the leap in technology that gives us the power we take for granted today. Since the beginning of the oil industry in the 19th century, petroleum has risen to global everyday usage. Initially kerosene, a product derived from petroleum, was used for lighting and heating, but with the appearance of oil drilling technology petroleum became mass produced. Used to generate electricity to power automobiles, ships, planes, etc. Today the world is almost completely dependant on fossil fuels. World consumption of fossil fuels has increased from 3.8 billion tons of oil in 1965 to 11.1 billion tons of oil in 2007. Of all the fossil fuels available, oil has had the most profound effect on society. However, fossil fuels are a finite resource. Fossil fuels work by converting the heat energy released by combustion into electrical energy. Once the hard resources are extracted and refined, they are ready for use. When combustion commences, the hydrocarbons present create energy. The heat used to burn the fossil fuels causes the molecules of carbon and hydrogen to react, which produces a large amount of energy. For the birth year, it would be the birth year of the parents of the students going to college. The percent is the percentage of students that completed college. As you can easily tell that the elite class keeps rising, while the low class barely moves. The developed countryof the United Stateshas increased the college costs for students in recent years. Higher costs only benefit the wealthy and lower income students lose in this situation. Lower income households end up borrowing too much. It doesn t affect the elite; in fact, they have the largest spike opposed to the other classes. Although college completion rates have increased, the cost of borrowing has also increased for lower class households. In a developing country, since there is more poverty and less parents that went to college, it led to most adults not having any schooling. During my research, I came to a realization that the United States is actually increasing slowly in income inequality. I saw this in another factor: health. The U.S. has a universal health care system that sometimes benefits people by providing little cost co pays. The length of life varies among the individuals and it was found that additional income allows for better care of oneself. This says that greater income inequality will produce greater inequality of life spans within countries. The life expectancy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. City Of St. Petersburg Case Study The dream, the vision and the action to finalize a deal which would bring a Major League Baseball (MLB) team to the City of St. Petersburg was realized in 1998 when the Tamp Bay Devil Rays took the field for the first time at Tropicana Field. The City of St. Petersburg became victorious in succeeding where Tampa had prevailed so many times before. The triumph came when a group of ambitious businessmen collaborated to build what became the FloridaSuncoast Dome in 1988 in downtown St. Petersburg. There had been a competition between Tampa and St. Petersburg to see who would build a new baseball stadium first. Tampa already had Raymond James Stadium, had built MacDill Air Force Base and the Florida Aquarium, St.Petersburg had nothing. St. Petersburg desperate to attract big business and attractions to the west side of Tampa Bay went and built the new stadium before securing a major league baseball team. The city was buried deep in the controversial move, for a mid market city to invest in a stadium without first securing a franchise could cost the city and the tax payers significantly. The gamble paid off and through years of trying to lure a franchise from other cities and being denied at every opportunity, the City of St. Petersburg was granted an expansion team by MLB.... SM dictates our friendships; it never leaves our side, in the form of smartphones, text messaging or video calling. Before SM became the first real avenue, in which people express themselves, people had to resort to face to face communication. Face to face communication is considered to be the traditional way of human interaction, but with the creation of SM in the World Wide Web, SM instantaneously throws your ideas out there for the entire world. According to SM journalist, Emma Stein, SM dependence could be considered a mental issue, since it is becoming part of our everyday life. To what extent is SM dependence a mental health issue? Alliteration In Wilfred Owen s Disabled Wilfred Owen, poet of Disabled , recounts the desolating stories of a disabled soldier who has been mutilated by the unforgiving First World War, when he was badly shaken from shell shock during the war. He presents the suffering of a soldier as an everlasting void of torment that threatens to tear his life into fragmented pieces of reminiscent memories. The injuries and pain originated from the war have lingered even when it ends, harassing the soldier as he tries to blend in once more with the rest of the community. Seen to have donned a ghastly suit of grey , the sibilance characterises the soldier as a solemn representation of the war s brutality. In contrast to the ex soldier s current situation, Owen depicts his past in enticing detail, especially exhibited when the girls glanced lovelier as the air grew dim . His use of alliteration serves to emphasise the girls glamour and beauty, whilst the connotations to brightness and liveliness from lovelier offers a contrast to the greyness and absence of colour in the present. Here, the line echoes with the previous phrases on the soldier s ghastly suit , implying that his colour, symbolism of youth, was lost due to the war. The succeeding line, in the old times, he threw away his knees , magnifies his regret of ever joining the army, describing this impulsive action the same as a metaphor, throwing away his knees . Since threw connotes to a sense of carelessness and indifference, it highlights the soldier s immaturity in losing such an important part of his life in a blink of an eye, implying that teenagers could easily be swayed to do things they might not have wanted to do. Owen demonstrates how time does not allow for much mistakes, as one incorrect decision might account for all the suffering in the future, accentuating time s relentless and persistent ... Reflective Essay On Greek Culture My experience attending the Seminar on Greece with Dr. Khosrowshahi was a very interesting, fun and informational way to gain knowledge of the different cultures and history of other parts of the world. I do not have an extensive knowledge of Greek history or culture. I enjoyed learning the different traditions and cultural rituals of the Greek culture. I learned a lot about the historyof Greece and how much the history influences many other cultures throughout the world. The most interesting fact and important impression I took away from the seminar is my Mother s name is Diane , neither my mother or myself knew the Greek history behind her name. I enjoyed how Dr. K used different ways to involve the students at the seminar to become engaged in learning and experiencing Greek culture. I found the drum performance quite exciting and interesting. Also, the young ladies demonstrating their cultural dance skills were very entertaining. After learning more about Greek culture, I found it very interesting how much the alphabet and language influences American English. The part of the seminar I enjoyed most was Dr. K demonstrating his knowledge of Greek music by demonstrating the drum. I enjoyed many other aspects of the seminar as well. I enjoyed the visuals, including the pictures and videos used to provide a visual experience of Greek culture. The Greek culture artifacts and photos from previous trips to Greece was inspiring and exciting to experience as well. Also, student interaction was impressive throughout the entire seminar. There is not anything I disliked about the seminar. The only thing I did not like was having to take off work to attend. This is not anything involving the seminar or the presentation. Furthermore, I am thankful I was able to have the opportunity to take off work to attend this continuing education experience. Prior to this seminar, I was not aware of the extensive history of the Olympic Games. It was interesting to learn the Olympics originated before Christ. Also, the Olympics truly represent the uniting of different cultures, religions and races. This is a very inspirational and motivating experience considering the current division of cultures. • 38. The Ethical Theory Of Ethical Theories Essay Ethical theories are concepts or moral values that dictate whether choices are right or wrong. The two ethical theories that are the most prominent in society are Utilitarianism and Deontology. Utilitarianism is a theory that judges the value of the action as good or bad based on the consequences of the deed, while Deontology believes the motive of the act is more important. When determining the value of the decisions, the variables are based on the guidelines of each ethical theory. This includes providing the basis of how to make logical decisions founded on ethical reasoning. Unfortunately, there are many situations where individual s rights are threatened due to unethical and unmoral situations like sexual harassment in the workplace. To prevent similar situations from occurring, individuals must be able to fully understand when to apply the use of ethicsto decision making. For this type of mindset to take place, the public needs to be educated on the different types of ethical ideologies, and know how to approach situations based on ethical solutions. Once the public is aware of the ethical theories and how to avoid unethical situations, there will a decreased amount of sexual harassment in the workplace. Utilitarianism, also known as consequentialism, is a theory where actions are considered good or bad depending on the consequences of the actions, not the motives. In Utilitarianism, the main goal of the theory is to maximize the most amount of good for all people. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main character, a young girlnamed Scout, does not fully understand the concept of these different social classes and often fails to recognize which one she belongs to. As the story progresses, it becomes known to the reader that Scout is part of the highest social classin Maycomb. However, because of the conditions she is raised in, she does not fit in with a certain group of women that this class is mainly composed of: the Southern belles. Throughout the story, it is evident that some Maycomb women possess the traits of a Southern Belle persona, such as while Scout does not, due to the fact that she grows up without a mother. The term Southern belle refers to a wealthy but well mannered young woman, often characterized by her chaste demeanor and submissive attitude, who tries to reach perfection in almost every aspect of her life. • 45. History of the Fire Service The History of the Fire Service Did you know that the earliest form of firefighting took place in Rome in 24 B.C? After almost being destroyed by unruly conflagrations, Rome created a fire department consisting of about 7,000 paid firefighters. Their fire crews responded to and fought fires, and also patrolled the streets with the authority to fine anyone who disobeyed the fire prevention codes (Hashgan). The major piece of firefighting equipment the Roman s used was the bucket, which was passed from hand to hand to deliver water to the fire. Additionally, they used an ax, which was utilized to remove the fuel and prevent the spread of fire, as well as to make openings that would allow heat and smoke to escape a burning building. ... In 1829, a steam fire engine was built in London, but the volunteer fire companies were stuck in the olden days and they were slow to accept it, but in Cincinnati, Ohio, the public forced the firefighters to use the steam engines. Additionally, William F. Channing used telegraph technology to develop the first fire alarm box system in 1852 (Britannica). By April 29, 1852 the first box was struck, and boxes were placed all over the city. Later, in 1832, the New York Mutual Hook and Latter Company No. 1 bought a horse to pull their engine. Before long, horses became a part of the fire service all over the country (Hashagan). Many of the horses were trained to the sound of the bell to get out of their stalls and stand at the front of the engine, usually with the help of the Dalmatian, the fire dog (Hashagan). Dalmatians were chosen as fire dogs not only because of the strong bonds they form with the horses, but also because they guarded the engine. At the sound of the bell, the dog would stir up the horses and then run outside and bark at the people trying to cross in front of the fire house (Hashagan). In the year 1870, the aerial ladder wagon appeared. This enabled the firefighters to reach high places, tall buildings, and made putting out fires and rescuing trapped victims easier. It enables borrowers to borrow at a lower cost and investors get higher rate of return, but they lose the safety of the banking system in the process. (Patrick Artus, October 2012.) Main reasons for Bank disintermediation are as follows: High Rate of Borrowing: If the Bank s rate of borrowing is high, borrowers tend to seek lower cost of financing for example, issuers of commercial papers, etc to reduce overall interest expense and ultimately improve on company s cash flow from operations. Low Interest Rates: Low interest rates on deposit and savings accounts could lead to financial disintermediation because depositors who want higher returns on their deposits will be looking at alternative ways of improving their yield. Also policies like regulation Q and Regulation D promulgated by the Federal Reserve Board in the United States in 1933, though regulation Q does not exist anymore led to imposition of interest rate ceilings on various other types of bank deposits, including savings and time deposits. Humanitarian and non governmental (NGOs) organizations play a very important role in post disaster planning and development because government cannot address everything, everywhere. In fact, in many parts of the world the sitting government may not even be capable of addressing the basic day to day needs of its population, pre disaster. Traditionally, NGOs and humanitarian organizational tackle issues such as human rights, advocacy, humanitarian aid, hunger, extreme poverty, education, housing and vocational training. Now these organizations are responding to disasters and working in the areas of reconstruction, risk reduction, mitigation and disaster preparedness. NGOs and humanitarian organizational structures are flexible. Organizational size, staff and volunteer workforce can quickly expand or contract to accommodate the mission at hand. This enables service delivery at a much lower cost than most governments, private sector and multi lateral agencies can provide. NGOs and humanitarian organizations work at the grassroots level so while government may have the primary role of planning and managing all aspects of the disaster NGOs and humanitarian organizational can supplement these initiatives by helping people understand their rights and focusing on specific issues that assist vulnerable populations.
