Chilling through and through, The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold, is a tale of both murder and
growth, and, more so, the latter after the former. Introduced, quite bluntly, within the very first two
lines of the novel, readers meet the narrator, Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. . . murdered [at
age 14] on December 6, 1973 (1). Susie, brutally raped and killed by a foul, twisted serial killer by the
name of Mr. Harvey, is now giving the audience an eerie, psychologically thrilling recountal on the
lives of those she once knew who continue to live. In a fascinating twist, Sebold has Susie go into
detailed aspects of Mr. Harvey s life, past, and the nature of his corruption. Although humans are not
inherently or entirely benevolent or malevolent creatures from birth, one can see how the nurture of a
human directly influences their qualities as seen through Mr. Harvey s characterization and
development.
Before meeting Mr. Harvey, Susie enlightens the audience with a few facts about the murderer. For
instance, that her mother liked his border flowers , and that he believed in old fashioned things like

With the upcoming addition of our middle school we will be developing a sixth, seventh, and eighth
grade arts program consistent with the frameworks of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years
Programme. The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme requires visual and performing
arts for all students and demands much more of students and teachers than our more traditional
elementary arts program. We hope to provide an arts rich school community to all our students. The

The fur of a polar bear acts as a dense insulator, preventing almost all heat loss. In fact, adult males

light, making it appear white, just like what happens with snow and ice. The skin of a polar bear is
black, and it covers up a layer of fat that can be up to 4.49 inches thick. This thick layer of fat helps
