2. Basic rules of Preparation
• All measurements for prep. are based on dry herbs, if
using a fresh herb, double the quantity.
• Make sure in preparing herbs that water is free of
chlorine and fluoride.
• Use a small scale to weigh herbs.
• Get your equipment and ingredients ready and read
instructions thoroughly before beginning.
• NEVER use aluminum ware. Use of aluminum has been
implicated in Alzheimer's disease.
• Bottle and label the products with the date and follow
storage guidelines.
3. Preparing Herbal Tea
What you need:
1 T herb to 1 cup of purified water
Ceramic or glass tea pot
Non aluminum strainer
Place your herb of choice into the teapot
Boil 1 cup of pure water
Pour the boiled water over the herb and cover. Let steep for 5 to 10 min.
Strain the tea through a non aluminum strainer
Enjoy!
4. Infusions
• More potent than tea and will extract glycosides, alkaloid salts
and water soluble vitamins.
• Infusions must be used immediately and not stored in the
refrigerator for more than 24 hrs.
• What you need:
1 oz dried herb
1pt purified water
Ceramic or glass teapot
Non aluminum strainer
• Place your herb of choice into your teapot
• Boil 1pt of pure water
• Turn the heat off and pour water over herb.
• Let steep for 10 to 20 min
• Strain the tea in a non aluminum strainer
5. DECOCTIONS
• This method uses the hard woody substances such as roots,
barks and stems.
• Decoctions are used to extract bitter principles and mineral salts
• They are intended for immediate use and do not store more
than 72 hrs in the refrigerator.
What you Need:
1 oz of root or herb
1 pint of water
Stainless or enamel pot
nonaluminum strainer
• Place purified water in pot and cut or crush the herb or root and add to
pot.
• Turn the stove heat to medium and then simmer with the lid off until
about ¼ of the water has condensed. ¾ of a pt should remain.
• Cool and strain in nonaluminum strainer
• Divide in doses and store no more than 72 hrs in refrigerator
