Warm –up – pens, paper, journal, books, note
(note) A rule is flexible and can be adjusted by a person. A law is
absolute and requires a lot of work to change.
(Discuss) Have your family or friends any rules you wish to share
with the class? Anything from ‘take off your shoes at the door’ to
‘sharing snacks’, etc.
Homework
Will be a short 5-10 minute activity in the activity book.
Skills
Expressing ideas and managing information.
Today's Objectives
1. Examine where laws come from.
2. Examine two types of law – Civil and Criminal Law.
Heading: Law 2 Date:
 We are going to read page 277 - 279 of the book which
examines where laws come from.
 We shall take notes along the way about different types of
crimes.
 We’ll examine the difference between Civil Law (private
stuff) and Criminal Law ( public stuff)
 We’ll end by completing picture activity on page 104 in your
activity book (which shall be your homework should we not
complete it in class).
Plan for today
 I will need about sixteen people to read page 277 - 279 of your main
book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
 (note) Laws are there to ensure order, safety, peace and justice for
all people. They protect Human Rights.
 (note) Judges make ‘common law’.
 (note) Governments and the Constitution affect our ‘Supreme
Law’.
 (note) Local Authorities make ‘by-laws’ for their own areas.
 (note) International Law is managed by the UN. This aims to help
countries work together and maintain peace.
 (Discuss) ‘We were just following orders’ – is this a good excuse?
Page 277 - 278 (main book) reading and notes
 I will need about four more people to read page 279 of your main
book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
 (note)Civil Law deals with people’s relationships and disputes. It
is often about private matters and is settled with money.
 (note) Criminal Law deals with a person’s relationship with
society. It is often a public matter and is settled with
imprisonment, fines or community service.
 (#Action) ‘Create a table – ‘Civil Law’ on one side, ‘Criminal Law’
on the other. Put 4 crimes from #Action on each side.
Page 279 (main book) reading and notes

petty theft, prostitution, public intoxication, simple assault,
disorderly conduct, trespass, vandalism, reckless driving, first-
time possession of certain drugs.
 (Note) Serious offenses include Murder, Attempted Murder,
Manslaughter, Aid and Abet Murder/Manslaughter, and Solicit to
