This document outlines a lesson plan about cyberbullying that includes:
1. Reading about cyberbullying from pages 316-318 of the main book and taking notes on what it is and what to do.
2. Examining two activities from the activity book - one about a case of cyberbullying and another asking students to draw a poster.
3. Discussing examples of cyberbullying using different online platforms and how to anonymously report bullying.
1. Warm –up – pens, paper, journal, books, note
(note) Cyberbullying: the use of phones or computers to intimidate,
threaten or abuse someone.
(Discuss) You see a message on someone’s social media saying they
are going to hurt someone. What do you do?
Homework
Will be a short 5-10 minute activity in the activity book.
Skills
Expressing ideas and managing information.
Today's Objectives
1. Understand that you are a citizen online, just as you are part of a
local or school community.
2. Examine the responsibilities you have because of this.
Heading: Media 4 Date:
2. We are going to read page 316 – 318 of the book which looks
at more dangers of social media; particularly Cyberbullying.
We shall take notes along the way about what it is and what
you can do.
We’ll then examine two activities in your activity book, one
examining a case of cyberbullying and the other asking you
to draw a poster.
Plan for today
3. I will need about seven people to read page 316 – 318 of your main
book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
(note) Community: a group of people who share common
attitudes or interests. There are millions of online
communities.
(note) Reddit and Boards.ie are example of websites where
people go to ask other people questions.
(note) Social networking can stop wars. The more we know
people, the less afraid we are of them because they are human.
(Discuss) Can you be friends with someone online, having
never met or seen them in person?

4. I will need about four more people to read page 316 – 318 of your
main book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
(note) Danger #1: In a conversation online, predators can get
important information you may think is worthless.
(note) Danger #2: Anonymity. When people think their identity
is secret, they say or do stupid things.
(note) ‘Where cyberbullying takes place’: (note all the bullet
points at the top of page 318).
(Discuss) Look at the bullet points on the top of page 318. Can
you think of an example of someone bullying someone using
one of these things. (Open your activity book page 125 then.)

5. Page 125 has an example of what not to do when being bullied. The
person threatens to kill the bully. Read the short paragraph, then
answer the questions.
(Task 1) Answer questions 1-4, page 125, on your own first. Then
share with the people beside you. Then share with the class.
(Task 2) Answer question 5 on page 125 – how do you think you
could report bullying anonymously (without people knowing it
was you).
(Task 3) Complete page 124. Draw two people and list some
ideas on what a good person does and does not do on the
interent. (on facebook or twitter for example). Finish for
homework.
