1. The document outlines the seating plan and agenda for a class on democracy and creating a class constitution.
2. It discusses that most homework this year will be linked to completing action project reports by the deadline in December.
3. The class objectives are to examine democracy, discuss the class action projects and year plan, create a class constitution, and focus more on note-taking.
2. Homework
Most Homework this year will be linked to your CBA action project report.
Skills
Communication and managing information.
Today's Objectives
1. Examine and be able to define Democracy.
2. Discuss the plan for the year and your CBA.
3. Examine the constitution and create one for the class.
4. Introduce a more note-taking focused class
Heading: Democracy 1 Date:
Warm –up – pens, paper, journal, prepare for note
On next slide
3. “Democracy is the worst form of government except all those
other forms that have been tried from time to time”. (Churchill)
Democracy is defined as ‘Rule by the people’. We elect people
to represent us and make laws. We vote yes or no on
important issues. Every person’s voice matters.
Warm-up – note the following
Can you describe another type of government and describe what it
would look like if this class used that system of rule.
4. 2A and 2D have now done their action projects. The majority
of you have a decent first draft of an action report which you
were graded on for summer.
Your homework from now till Christmas is to improve that
report. Presentation will be a key factor. Each week at the
end of class, I shall recommend you spend 10-15 minutes on a
particular part of the report, which I will discuss at the end
of this class.
The deadline for a finished report will be December, roughly
two weeks before Christmas break.
Plan for the year
5. We are going to read pages 217 and 218 of the book.
We will take notes along the way.
You will then elect two people to write out a list of
rules the entire class has a voice in creating and you
shall all sign this class constitution.
Why two? One for me – one for the class rep. to
keep.
Plan for today
6. I will need three people to read about a paragraph each today and
about ten people to read a line each. Take these readings as
opportunities to practice speaking, which you need for both
exams and jobs in real life.
(note) Ireland is a parliamentary republic. We vote for people to
represent us in the Dáil.
(note) We have a constitutional democracy. Our laws must be
agreed upon by the majority of people in the land.
(Task) Vote for two people to write down a list of rules on paper, and
one person to write it on the whiteboard. (Green cards available)

7. Raise your hands and offer a rule to be written down under the
heading ‘Class Constitution’.
The writers need to be able to hear you so one voice, nice a clear.
Here are some things to consider:
1. The reasons you are here and what you need from the class.
2. The role of the student and the role of the teacher.
3. What responsibilities the students and teacher has.
4. Relationships between students.
5. Rewards and punishments.
6. Students rights and well-being.
7. How to add or subtract rules.
Task
8. We have roughly 9 weeks, a break, 7 weeks and then Christmas.
Two weeks before Christmas break will be the deadline for your
CSPE CBA – a report on an Action Project.
Each week, starting next week, I shall give you advice on a small
paragraph you should write from ‘What skills did you use’ to ‘What
teams were in the class’.
Presentation is very important with the project as well. Typing it
out or writing eloquently will be necessary.
Homework – starts next week
