In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real products?
1.
2. From looking into types of music videos there are 3 types of music videos. Narrative,
Performance and concept. My music video is a concept video. A concept video is a video
that is based around a single or idea. My video is also a narrative based video. Narrative
videos contain footage that tries to portray and tell a story. This enables there to be a mix
of actors, props and settings and it can either relate directly to the story that is being told
or it can be of different visuals show something else. Music videos all have mise en
scene, editing and camera angles. Depending on the type of video it is determines the
types of mise en scene, editing and camera angles.
In order to get a better understanding of the forms and conventions of real products I am
going to investigate real music videos and compare them to my music video. It was
difficult trying to find a concept video from the genre of hip hop, so I’m looking at Beyonce
- If I were a boy which explores the concept of double standards in a relationship.
The actors, make-up and props may become an important feature in a music video.
These 3 features may be evident in all types of music video and it allows there to be
different connotations and features which may draw the audience in.
3. Music Video Mise en scene:
Mise en scene is important in concept and
narrative videos. This is because both types of
videos are trying to show a story. Some are almost
similar to that of films and may replicate elements
from small feature films where the actors must are
required to suit a certain character and their role.
Location:
Locations in concept and narrative
videos are important as often the location
indicates where the scene is and helps
push the story forward. As seen in
Beyonce’s video we are taken to many
locations. I feel like the most important
locations are their home, the car, the
office and the party. All of these locations
help push the story forward. When they
are at there separate jobs we learn who
is loyal and who is not. The party is the
pivotal point where the other half learns
what they are like and at home is where
the argument happens.
4. Costume
Costume can either explain a character or can connote a genre or a musician. As seen in
Beyonce’s video the costumes of the police outfits indicate she is a police officer. Where as
in for example Childish Gambino - 3005 video he is seen wearing a brown shearing jacket,
this doesn’t really represent the genre of Hip hop but represents him.
Music Video Mise en scene
5. Mise en Scene:
Locations:
Here the locations are Emily’s bedroom
and Georgie’s bedroom. These locations
are significant as it is seen as the girls
individual ‘safe place’. It also can relate
to my younger half of my target audience
as they are likely to spend lots of time in
their bedroom
Props:
I placed a picture of Jesus next to the
mirror as it tells the audience that she is
religious.
I had my two actors applying make up as
this relates to my target audience as
make up is huge for women but it seems
there has been a huge make up surge in
girls between 16-21.
Music Video
6. Music Video Mise en Scene:
Props:
Still on the first scene I used more props. I
had the characters both on their phones as
it relates to my target audience and a wider
audience as in 2017 everyone has a phone.
On Emily’s bed I place teddy bears on the
end of the bed as it represents her
personality of being innocent
The next props I used was a photo frame
and a vinyl player. I used the photo frame
as it is an image of Kim the actor when she
was younger. The butterfly frame is
symbolic to the way she is feeling as she is
going on a date.
I used the vinyl player as it is a way my
target audience listens to music.
The final prop I used in this scene was the
cross necklace, again this was to show that
there is a religious aspect to her.
7. Music Video Mise en Scene:
Location:
Kino lounge is the location in the next
scene. This shot is a vital part of the scene
as it is seen as their ‘place’. The beginning
of their relationship blooms from this place.
The next location is Georgie’s bedroom.
Again this helps push the story forward as
bringing a girlfriend home has been a big
deal for generations.
Props:
One of the most important props in the
video is the painting. The painting signifies a
safe place for the couple.
I used a keyboard as a prop as it is an
activity to bring the couple closer together.
Bubbles were another prop I used to add to
the effect of the video being dreamy.
8. Music Video Mise en Scene:
Location:
The next important locations are in the
kitchen and hallway where Emily’s mum
prevents her from going out.
The next important location is the bathroom
where Emily starts to become suicidal. I
chose a bathroom as it is a private place for
everybody, a place to get ideas and
thoughts in order.
The final location is the Kino Lounge, this is
their ‘safe place’ and the music video kind of
goes in a full circle as it is where we are first
introduced to the characters as a couple.
9. Music Video Mise en Scene:
Costume:
I chose these outfits because the first three
are in the good moments, these are light
colours and show a happy mood. However
the final outfit where it is all black creates a
more negative mood which is what I wanted
when she was in the bathroom.
10. Music Video
In terms of Mise en scene, my music video uses conventions of locations, props and
costumes in order to push the story along just how real convention music videos use
them.
11. Music Video Editing
In terms of editing in Beyonce’s video it is edited to show that Beyonce is not loyal but the
man is. This is done by cutting between each scene for example we shown he is trying to
ring her but then she ignores the call.
12. Music Video Editing
Editing plays an important role in my music
video. In the first part when the two are
characters are getting ready, it is cut to
show that the two are mirroring each other.
This is to show that the two are similar to
each other.
13. Music Video Editing
The use of editing is then used to indicate
the bad moments of the music video. This is
used as I superimposed captions over the
video, indicating to the audience what is
happening. I did this by just using closed
captions but I also used it in the forms of
text messages. This was because I felt like
it related to the target audience as texting
has become a huge part of our society and
especially in relationships.
14. Music Video Editing
Another part of important editing that I used
was in the bathroom scene. I used quicker
cuts to reflect Emily’s mentality to show that
she doesn't know what to do but also
indicating she is not in a safe mentality.
15. Music Video Editing
The final part of important editing that I did was colour grading. The colour grading dictated
the mood of the scene. For example with these two stills you can see that there is a
difference in mood. The first image features warm colours where as the second image is
cold and dark
16. Editing
Editing was important in the
flashback part. It was important
for the watchers to know it was a
flashback, so by looking at
traditional flash back scenes in
films I learnt that flashbacks for
good moments will have high
saturation and warmth and may
feature a vignette. For my scenes
I increased the warmth and had a
vignette.
17. Music Video
In terms of editing I feel like my music video develops the conventions of concept music
videos. This is because I used the timing of cuts to indicate emotions which can help push
a story along. Also because I used captions to reflect the change of mood in the music
video I believe this develops music videos as I have not seen this before. Also the use of
colour grading develops current conventions as the colours indicate the mood and feel of
the scene.
18. Music Video Camera Angles
The camera angles in Beyonce’s video are limited. We only see close ups, mid close ups,
mid shots and long shots.
19. Music Video Camera angles
In my video we see over the shoulder shots,
close ups, mid shots, tracking shots, mid
long shots, long shots and birds eye view
shots.
20. Music Video
In terms of camera angles I feel like my music video uses the conventions of concept
music videos. This is because although I used a wider range of camera angles I still used
the basic camera angles of music videos.
21. Digipak
From looking at album covers I found that traditional hip hop album covers features the
artists name and them on the cover. The purpose of an album cover is to advertise the
artist and represent the style of music on the album. For example the NWA album cover is
a point of view shot with Eazy E holding a gun, this gives us an indication that the album
is a rap album.
Album
22. Digipak Album:
I chose to have my musician on the cover
as the artist is one of the main selling points
to the album. For example if I had an
abstract picture people wouldn't recognise
what album it is. This happened to me with
Jay Z’s Magna Carta album, I kept seeing
this album being sold but I didn’t know
which artist it was.
I chose to have a plain background because
I wanted the main focus to be on his face.
I had the artist looking directly into the
camera because this relates to the theory of
the Hierarchy of needs as the person
viewing it gets a feeling of belonging.
The colours represent the style of music the
artist makes. By having it pink represents
that he makes alternative music.
23. Digipak Album:
For the back of the album it is typical to find
the album track names. Sometimes the
back features some type of imagery relating
to the album. Again you would find the
publishing companies on the back.
24. Digipak Album:
The back of the album is simple it contains
the album tracks and at the bottom it
features the publishing companies. I
decided to keep the back of the album
simple as the purpose of the back is to
inform the reader what songs are on the
track. The back is a selling point so by
keeping it simple makes it easier for the
reader to make a decision if they want to
buy the album.
25. Digipak Album:
For the interior of the album I looked at real
life hip hop interiors. I found that on the
booklet side there is typically some sort of
imagery.
On the cd there is normally the artists name,
album name, publishing companies and
copyright laws going around the edge.
26. Digipak
The interior of the album has a pixelated design. I did this as again I wanted to show
he is alternative.
The CD features the artists name, album title, publishing companies and copyright
laws. Here I followed the conventions of cds.
Album
27. Digipak
For my digipak I believe I use and challenge the conventions of real media products. I use them because I use a photo
of my artist for the cover and this is seen on most hip hop covers. I also use the parental advisory sticker which is
featured on almost every hip hop album. The back of my digipak is basic and follows conventions as it features the
names of tracks, publishing companies and copyright laws at the bottom.
However I challenge the conventions of hip hop albums because I used pink isn't a colour associated with rap. The
reason why I used pink is because pink represents the artist as it is alternative and he creates alternative hip hop.
For the interior I use conventions as the CD front it features the artists name, album name, publishing companies and
copyright laws. I chose to have these on there as without them it didn’t look professional.
However again I challenge the conventions of hip hop albums as my interior design isn’t something you would see on a
typical album interior. I chose to have this design as part of Kid Tak’s history is that he is a creative person, so when you
open the album it is like you are looking into part of his history.
28. Poster Poster:
From looking at posters i found
one of the main features is that
they are simple. They feature the
artists name, featuring songs,
websites and publishing
companies.
29. Poster Poster:
For my poster i decided to keep it simple and
follow the conventions. My poster features
the album cover, artists name, album name,
publishing companies, websites and the date
of the release.
30. Poster
For my poster I use conventions of real posters. I did this because there is no need to
make a poster complicated. As it is a selling point no one wants to have to read lots of
amount of information. If you provide them with enough information about the album
without them getting bored then that is a successful poster. I featured the website as if
people did want to find out more information then they know where to find it.
