The five types of indie music
1) 2) Indie Folk
• Emerged in 1990s
• It came around by indie artists
influenced by folk and classic
country music
• Nowadays its considered
Contemporary folk music with
acoustic sounds
• Artists include Bon iver, Fleet
foxes and The decemberists
Indie Rock
• Originated in the UK in 1980s
• It is considered an alternative of
rock music
• Influenced other indie types of
music. In 2000 indie rock gained a
commercial break through
• Artists include Arctic Monkeys, The
Killers and The Black Keys
4. 3) Indie Metal or Indie Pop 4) Indie Hip-Hop
• Originated in the same period as
indie Rock the 1980s
• Originated by Scottish punk bands
• Indie pop has a melodious and
less acoustic compared to indie
rock
• Indie pop holds the largest fan
base in the indie community
• Artists include Lana Del Rey,
Florence + the Machine and The
Smiths
• Considered as ‘underground
hiphop’
• Not as established as it has similar
aspects to the Hip Hop Genre
• Artists include Macklemore, MF
Doom and Illogic
5) Indie Electronic
• Similar organs to Indie Folk,
however found its final genre in
the 1990s
• Doesn't use acoustic instruments,
more sounds from a laptop/ deck
• Artists include MGMT, CHVCHES
and The xx

7. Why I chose the genre?
• One of the main reasons I have chose this
genre is because I know more information
on the interests of my target audience.
This means that I can write articles, and
stories which would intrigue the reader.
Also as I know their interests I can design
my magazine to suit them, making my
magazine more appealing to the buyers.
